Show notes

What the episode covers

In this follow-up episode of The Plumbob Report, hosts Becca and Danny revisit last week's food overhaul and the Project Rene pause, then look at what both mean for the Sims 4 and for other life sims worth watching.

The episode separates what has been reported from what is rumored or still unproven, so listeners can see which claims rest on sources and which are speculation. It also compares the latest Sims 4 quality-of-life changes with EA's published roadmap.

  • The October 27 update: A fan-site summary points to a fridge Open option moved up in the menu, Family Recipes at 375+, leftover autonomy, TV locks by Sim category, a Sims Options pie menu, and save-backup tracking. The hosts note that real leftover behavior and pie menu performance are still unproven.
  • EA's February 24 roadmap: The topics match areas such as autonomy, odd locations, object obsessions, sleeping, and dining. A fan summary does not prove the roadmap was delivered.
  • Project Rene paused: GameSpot reports the project, also known as Lotus, is paused while EA prioritizes Evergreen. Nothing says how long the pause lasts. Sims5Mods ties it to Building EA's Next Chapter and a Kotaku-obtained email, all reported rather than confirmed. Evergreen, a rumored Sims 4 remaster with DLC bundled, has not been explained by EA.
  • Why Sims 4 matters more now: Sims Community's recap calls it the only active release with regular content, and Sims5Mods argues the pause raises its importance. The roadmap window ran March through August, while the update is dated October 27.
  • Life-sim neighbors: Loftia, a cozy life-sim MMO in Early Access on PC and Mac; Moonlight Peaks, an indie vampire life sim arriving on PS5 November 17; and Petit Planet, a free-to-play HoYoverse game for mobile and Switch 2.

Quick answers

Straight from the episode

The questions this one settles, without the listen.

What changed in The Sims 4 October 27 update?
Based on a fan-site summary, the update moved the fridge Open option up, added Family Recipes at 375+, gave Sims more autonomy with leftovers, added TV locks by Sim category, added a Sim Options pie menu, and added save-backup tracking. The hosts noted that real leftover behavior and pie menu clicks are still unproven.
Is Project Rene (Lotus) canceled or paused?
It is reported as paused, not canceled. GameSpot's report says EA is prioritizing Evergreen and cites EA's long-term-potential line. Nothing says how long the pause will last, and Sims5Mods dated it to Oct 21.
What is Evergreen in The Sims universe?
Evergreen is a rumored Sims 4 remaster with DLC bundled in. EA has not explained it, so the hosts treat it as a rumor, not a plan.
Did the October 27 update deliver on EA's Feb 24 roadmap?
The topics match, including autonomy, odd locations, object obsessions, sleeping and dining. A fan summary does not prove roadmap delivery, though. The roadmap window was March through August and the update is dated October 27, so the hosts say there is no victory lap.
Why does The Sims 4 matter more now that Project Rene is paused?
Sims Community's recap calls Sims 4 the only active release with regular content. Sims5Mods argues, as opinion, that the pause raises Sims 4's importance.
Which other life sims does the episode recommend?
Loftia is a cozy life-sim MMO in Early Access on PC and Mac via Steam and Epic. Moonlight Peaks is an indie vampire life sim coming to PS5 on Nov 17. Petit Planet is HoYoverse's free-to-play game for mobile and Switch 2 about creating a planet and meeting creatures.

Becca HartwellOkay, my Sim just stood in front of an open fridge for what felt like an hour. Didn't eat, just stared. Rent-free in the cold air.

Danny ReyesThe autonomy really said, "I'll starve, but I'll look cozy doing it."

Becca HartwellRight? Anyway, hi, I'm Becca, that's Danny, and this is The Plumbob Report.

Danny ReyesSul sul. And yes, Becca, you're not imagining it. We are circling back this week.

Becca HartwellWait, really? Circling back like a Sim who forgot the plate in the sink?

Danny ReyesExactly like that. Leftovers, but make it podcast. Last week we were already chewing on the food overhaul and the Project Rene pause, so this is the reheated version.

Becca HartwellReheated, but hopefully not soggy. Microwave rules apply.

Danny ReyesFine. Quick note for anyone who missed last week, this is a follow-up, so we'll catch you up fast. No homework.

Becca HartwellGood, because my Sim does enough homework for the whole household and still fails the skill check.

Danny ReyesWhere do we start?

Becca HartwellFirst, a quick look back at the update that touched your fridge. Okay, so the fridge. Simscommunity.info put together a summary of the October 27th base game update, and the headline is a culinary and food overhaul.

Danny ReyesA food overhaul, finally. Becca, my Sims have been dying next to full kitchens for years.

Becca HartwellI know. So the open option moves to the front of fridge menus.

Danny ReyesWait, that's it?

Becca HartwellThat's part of it. Family Recipes expands to three hundred and seventy-five plus dishes.

Danny ReyesThree hundred and seventy-five. Okay, but who was cooking all of that? My Sim has made grilled cheese for nine days straight.

Becca HartwellRight? Now there's a menu with options. That's a big deal for anyone who plays slow.

Danny ReyesSlow like me watching my Sim decide between two foods for an entire evening.

Becca HartwellAnd that's why a number like three hundred and seventy-five plus catches my eye. But I'm reading it off a summary, so I won't pretend I know exactly how it plays.

Danny ReyesHold on, though. That summary comes from a fan site, not EA's own notes. So I'd treat the details as a good map, not the final word.

Becca HartwellFair. Still, it lines up with what EA said it was working on.

Danny ReyesCareful, Becca. Lining up isn't proving. We're leaning on a fan summary here.

Becca HartwellRight. So I'm only saying the topics match. Food and autonomy keep showing up in both places.

Danny ReyesOh, the roadmap.

Becca HartwellYep. EA's quality-of-life roadmap came out February 24th, 2026. It named Sim autonomy as a focus.

Danny ReyesAnd they listed examples, right? Because I have a whole list of my own.

Becca HartwellThey did. Odd location choices, object obsessions, and sleeping behavior.

Danny ReyesOdd location choices. You mean the Sim who walks into the pool and just stands there? The autonomy really said, "You know what? A ladder's optional."

Becca HartwellHonestly, yes. And object obsessions. One Sim, one mirror, three hours.

Danny ReyesSleeping behavior is the one that gets me. Why are you napping on the floor when there's a bed right there?

Becca HartwellThe roadmap also named dining and meal behavior, so the fridge changes are not random. Food was on the list.

Danny ReyesOkay, that's actually satisfying. Promise in February, fridge in October.

Becca HartwellAnd EA said the work is driven by feedback from the EA forums and The Sims Discord.

Danny ReyesSo the people yelling about grilled cheese were heard. Somebody on a forum is having a very good week.

Becca HartwellTotally.

Danny ReyesOkay, but the roadmap thing is interesting to me because it's rare. Companies announce plans all the time. Fewer circle back and show you something.

Becca HartwellThough I'd be careful there. The summary is a fan site's list, so I'm not saying EA ticked off every roadmap item. I'm saying food and autonomy were named in February, and food and autonomy show up in October.

Danny ReyesAnything else in the update, or did the fridge eat the whole thing?

Becca HartwellThere's more. Better leftover autonomy, which ties right into the food stuff. Plus a few quality-of-life changes.

Danny ReyesLike what?

Becca HartwellYou can lock TVs by Sim category. There's a consolidated Sim options pie menu and better save backup tracking.

Danny ReyesWait, lock TVs by category? So the toddler can't take over the remote?

Becca HartwellThat's how I read it, yeah. I'm cheering for all of it, though. Honestly, I love the little stuff.

Danny ReyesOkay, but picture a household with a toddler, a teen, and an adult all fighting over one screen. Category locks sound like a peace treaty.

Becca HartwellA peace treaty with a remote. And the save backup tracking is my unglamorous favorite. Nobody throws a parade for a backup until the day they need one.

Danny ReyesMe too. But what's still missing? You are going to ask. I can feel it.

Becca HartwellI was. The summary mentions leftover autonomy, but I wanna see how Sims actually behave on a busy Tuesday. Do they eat the leftovers or just admire them?

Danny ReyesAdmire them, obviously. They'll stand there glowing and pick a different snack.

Becca HartwellStop. But yes, that's the test. Menus are easy. Behavior is the hard part.

Danny ReyesAnd the pie menu consolidation is nice, but I'm waiting to see if it's less clicking or just different clicking.

Becca HartwellFair. I'll take a win either way.

Danny ReyesSame. Here's my question about the leftover bit, though. If a Sim finally eats the leftovers, is that a fix or is that the game finally doing its job?

Becca HartwellA little of both. When a fridge works the way a person expects, nobody notices. That's the funny thing about quality-of-life changes. Success looks like nothing happening.

Danny ReyesAnd honestly, if the summary's right, the way to judge this is by playing it, not reading about it.

Speaker 3Agreed. Menus on paper are promises. A Sim actually eating a leftover is proof.

Speaker 4Fridge sorted, I guess. The bigger story is the one hanging over the whole franchise.

Speaker 3Right. Project Rene. Let's talk about that pause and where it leaves everything.

Speaker 4Okay, Becca, I need you sitting down for this one.

Speaker 3I'm sitting. I'm hydrated. Go.

Speaker 4Project Rene is paused. Also called Project Lotus, depending on who's holding the microphone.

Speaker 3Wait, really? Paused, paused?

Speaker 4Paused. That's the word in the reporting. Not canceled, just paused.

Speaker 3Okay, but what does paused even mean? Like a Sim on pause with a half-eaten sandwich?

Speaker 4Honestly, nothing I've read says how long it lasts or when it picks back up. That's the open question.

Speaker 3Which makes paused a very flexible word.

Speaker 4GameSpot reports that EA paused it and is prioritizing something called Project Evergreen instead.

Speaker 3Evergreen. Sounds like a candle.

Speaker 4Sounds like a dentist's waiting room. But GameSpot also quotes EA saying it's focusing on the long-term potential of The Sims.

Speaker 3Okay, that's a very corporate sentence.

Speaker 4I mean, come on, long-term potential. That could mean anything. That's a Sim standing in the middle of the lot saying, "I have plans."

Speaker 3Rude, but fair.

Speaker 4Seriously, though, a pause plus a quote about potential. Put those together and you get a company telling you where its attention is and not much about where it's going.

Speaker 3Where its attention is happens to be useful to know. The report says Evergreen gets the focus. We just don't know what Evergreen is yet.

Speaker 4When did this land, though? One fan site, Sims5Mods, dates it to October twenty-first.

Speaker 3And that's the same week as the other big EA news, right?

Speaker 4Yep. They tie it to a post called Building EA's Next Chapter, and they point to an internal email that Kotaku obtained saying EA will prioritize Evergreen and pause Lotus.

Speaker 3Hold on. So the email is Kotaku's, and the fan site is passing it along?

Speaker 4Exactly. So I'd treat the details as reported, not confirmed by EA. Fan site, secondhand email. Receipts, but not original receipts.

Speaker 3Totally. Noted.

Speaker 4And here's the part I find interesting. The same fan site says that post also covered about four hundred layoffs and the BioWare closure.

Speaker 3Wow. So the pause isn't a lone headline. It sits inside a much heavier piece of company news.

Speaker 4Which is context, not a verdict. I'm not saying the pause is connected to any of it. I'm saying it showed up alongside a lot.

Speaker 3Fair. And I'll hold that line too. Reported by a fan site, so we say reported.

Speaker 4Now the fun part. What is Evergreen?

Speaker 3Oh, I have a theory.

Speaker 4Of course you do.

Speaker 3GameSpot describes it as rumored to be a Sims 4 remaster with all the DLC bundled in.

Speaker 4Rumored. Big flashing word.

Speaker 3Huge. EA hasn't officially explained Evergreen, so we're in tea leaves territory.

Speaker 4And I'm gonna be annoying about it.

Speaker 3Shocking.

Speaker 4Look, I'll say the quiet part. Remaster makes me nervous. It could mean polish, it could mean a repackage, and nobody has told us which.

Speaker 3Totally. And the report only calls it rumored. There's no official description to lean on.

Speaker 4A remaster with every pack bundled in? Becca, my Sims just learned to eat leftovers. You want me to believe the whole house gets rebuilt?

Speaker 3Okay, but think about what that could mean. Everything in one place. No more scrolling a store page that looks like a flea market.

Speaker 4Or it's a very fancy way to sell me the packs I already own.

Speaker 3Could be. But I like the optimistic read. GameSpot's own piece argues the shift could be good news for players.

Speaker 4That's an opinion piece energy, though.

Speaker 3It's an opinion, sure. I'll take one. Nobody's handing out sunshine this month.

Speaker 4Okay, but here's my honest worry with optimism. It's easy to hear good news for players and fill in all my wishes. Faster everything, fewer bugs, the works.

Speaker 3And none of that is promised. That's the line I'm drawing. The report floats a possibility. My wish list is mine.

Speaker 4Fair. Look, I want the good version. I just want EA to say the word Evergreen out loud before I start decorating around it.

Speaker 3Right? One rumor, zero confirmation. We hold it loosely.

Speaker 4Loosely, like a Sim holding a plate.

Speaker 3And honestly, that's the healthiest way to take any of this. A rumor can be fun without being a plan.

Speaker 4Right. Fun to chew on, not something to build a wish list on. I'll enjoy the guessing game, but I'm keeping my expectations in the bottom drawer.

Speaker 3So scorecard. Reported Rene is paused and EA's quoted line is about the long-term potential of The Sims. Rumored everything about what Evergreen actually is.

Speaker 4And the date and the email are a fan site passing along something Kotaku obtained. Reported, not confirmed by EA. I'll keep saying it until I'm annoying.

Speaker 3And meanwhile, the sequel everyone's been whispering about is on ice, which is weird to say out loud.

Speaker 4So what does a pause mean for the game you can actually boot up today?

Speaker 3That's the right question, because that game is Sims 4, and it's still sitting right there on your hard drive. Okay, so here's the thing about Sims 4 right now. Sims Community's recap of where the franchise stands calls it the only active release still getting regular content.

Speaker 4Only one. Wow.

Speaker 3Everything else is paused, rumored, or being reworked.

Speaker 4So the old game is carrying the whole household.

Speaker 3Basically. And Sims5Mods goes a step further. It argues the pause makes Sims 4 more important to EA.

Speaker 4Hold on. That's one fan site's opinion, though. Nobody at EA said that.

Speaker 3Fair. It's an argument, not an announcement. But it tracks, right? If the shiny new thing is on ice, the current game is what's left.

Speaker 4Hmm, sure. And look at what that game just got. Fridge options moved up, leftovers behaving, TV locks.

Speaker 3Which loops right back to the roadmap. Autonomy, dining, weird Sim behavior. Those were the promises, and the update is the first thing you can actually click.

Speaker 4Wait, so the autonomy work wasn't a side quest?

Speaker 3Sounds like it's the main quest now.

Speaker 4Though I'll push back a little. The roadmap named March through August as its window, and the update is dated October twenty-seventh. I'm glad it showed up, but I'm not calling it a victory lap.

Becca HartwellFair. I'm not saying the update was the roadmap's final delivery. I'm saying the topics rhyme, autonomy, dining, and the roadmap said the work is driven by forum and Discord feedback, so the people complaining were at least in the room.

Danny ReyesSo the fridge got attention and the future got shelved. Priorities, EA. Love that.

Becca HartwellOkay, in fairness, a fridge you can open is a real quality of life.

Danny ReyesOh, totally. My Sim's dinner situation is a crisis. I just wish the crisis came with a sequel.

Becca HartwellHonestly, for a lot of players, The Sims 4 you have right now is the one you'll be playing. So if the active game is getting regular content, that matters.

Danny ReyesRight. And if you came for the sequel talk, the fridge is the thing you can actually use tonight. Not glamorous, but real.

Becca HartwellSpeaking of sequels, plenty of other studios aren't waiting around.

Danny ReyesRight. While EA reshuffles, other life sims are showing up. Who's first?

Becca HartwellLet's look. Okay, Loftia first. Qloud Games' cozy life sim MMO just went into early access.

Danny ReyesA cozy MMO, so the grind, but with throw pillows.

Becca HartwellProbably. COGconnected says it's out on PC and Mac through Steam and the Epic Game Store.

Danny ReyesWait, Mac too? Mac players never get invited to anything.

Becca HartwellRight? Small win.

Danny ReyesOkay, and cozy life sim MMO is a funny stack of words. Cozy, life sim, massively multiplayer. Three things I love and am a little scared to combine.

Becca HartwellScared why? Cozy plus multiplayer is just a neighborhood. Your neighbors are real people instead of the autonomy.

Danny ReyesReal people who won't use the pool ladder either probably.

Becca HartwellNobody uses the pool ladder. It's a universal law.

Danny ReyesAnd early access, so it's still being built while people live in it.

Becca HartwellWhich honestly sounds like a Sims household with a half-finished basement.

Danny ReyesWe've all had that lot.

Becca HartwellAnd that's my one note on early access in general. It's a launch, but it's also the start of the story. I'd wanna see how it grows.

Danny ReyesSame, and I'll only say what the report says. It launched into early access PC and Mac, Steam and Epic. Beyond that, I'm just imagining a basement.

Becca HartwellNext one is my kind of weird, Moonlight Peaks, indie vampire life sim.

Danny ReyesVampires. Okay, I'm listening.

Becca HartwellAll Hallows Geek reported it's coming to PS5 on November 17th.

Danny ReyesSo console folks get to be tiny, spooky villagers.

Becca HartwellTotally, and the vampire thing makes me smile because Sims players have been making vampires forever.

Danny ReyesDude, I have a vampire who just stands in the kitchen at midnight. Autonomy really wants her to be near the fridge.

Becca HartwellLeave her alone. She's thirsty.

Danny ReyesShe is not okay.

Becca HartwellAlso, the same report calls it a hit indie vampire life sim, and it mentions post-launch updates, PS Plus launch discounts, and trial access. I won't guess at details, but trial access sounds like a way to try it first.

Danny ReyesTrial access is the best phrase in gaming. Let me meet the vampire before I commit to the vampire.

Becca HartwellAnd post-launch updates means the story keeps going after day one, though again, the report doesn't spell out what's in them.

Danny ReyesWhich is how I like my vampires, mysterious and with a launch discount.

Becca HartwellOkay, third one, HoYoverse's Petit Planet.

Danny ReyesOh, the name alone, Petit Planet.

Becca HartwellLevelup reported it's a free to play galactic life sim launching soon on mobile and Nintendo Switch 2.

Danny ReyesFree to play. Free is a dangerous word, but I'm leaving it alone.

Becca HartwellFair. What I like is the pitch. You create your own planet and meet adorable creatures.

Danny ReyesYour own planet. No pool ladder to remove, no landlord.

Becca HartwellJust creatures, adorable ones.

Danny ReyesSee, that's a pitch. Mine is usually you have to feed everyone.

Becca HartwellThe coverage also talks about exploring a universe full of surprises, which, okay, I'm a sucker for a surprise that isn't a fire.

Danny ReyesWait, a surprise that isn't a fire? Name one.

Becca HartwellI'll get back to you. The coverage doesn't list them, so for now it's just a promise of surprises.

Danny ReyesA promise of surprises. Honestly, the most Sim sentence ever.

Becca HartwellSo here's a game for the Simmers. What would you steal from the cozy crowd?

Danny ReyesHmm. A planet-sized sandbox, honestly. Let me name a whole world after my worst Sim.

Becca HartwellI'd steal the vampire cottage vibe. Candles, mist, a tiny garden.

Danny ReyesOf course you would.

Becca HartwellYou know what I mean, though. Little spooky details.

Danny ReyesCandles, mist, tiny garden. That sounds like a build challenge. Somebody on the gallery should do it.

Becca HartwellOoh, a cozy vampire cottage challenge? I'd absolutely download that. Don't tempt me.

Danny ReyesAnd I'd take the creatures. Give me an adorable thing that follows me around and never autonomously quits its job.

Becca HartwellOh, that's the dream.

Danny ReyesHonestly, I'd take a pet that doesn't walk through the wall mid-chore.

Becca HartwellWait, that's very specific.

Danny ReyesVery personal, very real.

Becca HartwellOkay, real talk. What's the through line? Three games, a spread of platforms, PC and Mac, PS5, mobile, and Nintendo Switch 2. Everybody's getting a cozy place to live.

Danny ReyesWhich says something. Life sims aren't a one address genre. You can live in a cottage, a castle, or on a planet.

Becca HartwellSoft, spooky, or sparkly. Pick your climate.

Danny ReyesThat's the neighborhood. That's the report. Time to sign off.

Becca HartwellOkay, quick landing before we go. The fridge got fixed, Rene is on ice, and Evergreen is still just a whisper.

Danny ReyesAnd the neighbors are busy. Sims 4 is the game with the lights on right now, and honestly, I'm fine with that.

Becca HartwellReally? Mr. Skeptic is fine?

Danny ReyesDon't get used to it. I'll be grumpy again by Thursday.

Becca HartwellThere it is.

Danny ReyesLook, rumors are rumors until EA says the word Evergreen out loud. I'm playing the game I actually own and yelling at its autonomy like a normal person.

Becca HartwellTotally. Short version for the sticky note, Sims 4 is the active game, Evergreen stays a rumor, and we'll keep calling a rumor a rumor.

Danny ReyesPut it on the fridge, the one that opens now.

Becca HartwellOkay, so if you liked this, subscribe and leave us a review. It helps more than you'd think.

Danny ReyesAnd send us your wildest Sim stories at @PlumbobReport. The weirder, the better. Toddler loops, haunted toilets, a Sim who married the mailbox. We want it all.

Becca HartwellWait, did someone actually marry a mailbox?

Danny ReyesNot yet, but I believe in this community.

Becca HartwellSame. Go play something, Sims fans. Maybe feed your Sim first since the fridge works now.

Danny ReyesSul sul.
