Show notes

What the episode covers

In this episode of The Plumbob Report, hosts Becca and Danny walk through this month's Sims news and separate what is officially confirmed from what is still rumor or community-sourced reporting. Topics include EA's official October announcements, a teased large patch that may affect mods, allegations about the Marketplace, and a discussion about AI-coded mods alongside background on Project Rene.

With a lot of speculation circulating, the episode helps listeners see which items come from EA and which come from fan-site reports. It also covers practical considerations for players and mod creators ahead of a possible big patch.

  • Official EA news: October entries include free content and a performance cache update, the Sims Maker Program and Marketplace announcement, and the Spooky Collection with a Simstober goals flyer. Title-only listings show topics but not scope, so the hosts encourage reading the entries directly.
  • Big October patch tease: A Sims Community report says EA_Cade hinted on the Sims Discord at a large patch that could break mods, with details expected in about two weeks. Rumored items focus on food and dining and remain unconfirmed. Players may want to wait and back up saves, and creators could have updates ahead.
  • Marketplace allegations: Sims Community reported claims that the Marketplace can be hacked again and that a Maker runs a private monetized marketplace. These are unverified, community-sourced allegations, discussed alongside EA's Marketplace and Maker Program announcement.
  • AI-coded mods: A Sims Community opinion piece raises concerns about maintenance and future-proofing when modders use generative AI. It is a discussion starter, not evidence of how common the practice is.
  • Project Rene background: A recap of PC Gamer's January 9 reporting on the mobile-first social multiplayer life sim, with a caution that newer leaks are unconfirmed.

Quick answers

Straight from the episode

The questions this one settles, without the listen.

Is a big Sims 4 patch coming in October?
A Sims Community report from Oct 9 says EA_Cade hinted on the Sims Discord at a big October patch that could break mods, with a full list of changes expected in about two weeks. It is a hint relayed by a fan site, not an official EA confirmation.
What might the October Sims 4 patch include?
The rumored focus is food, dining and drinks. Unconfirmed items include muscle and weight controls, a calorie and pricing pass, Dine Out fixes and a fix for dirty dishes. None of these have been confirmed.
What should players and modders do if the patch breaks mods?
Players should wait before updating and back up their saves. Mod creators may have some homework to do to update their work. This is a what-if scenario, since a mod break has not been confirmed.
What are the Sims Marketplace hacking and private marketplace allegations?
Sims Community's front page (Oct 9-12) featured a modder showing the Marketplace can be hacked again, and a report that a Maker runs a private monetized marketplace. These are community-sourced allegations with no names and no verification beyond the site's word, and the episode treats them as big ifs.
What did EA announce about the Marketplace and Sims Maker Program?
EA's Oct 5 news index lists a Sims Maker Program and Marketplace announcement. The episode only flags the title as something to revisit, and notes that title-only listings reveal the topic but not the size or details.
Are modders really using AI to code Sims mods, and what is Project Rene?
A Sims Community opinion piece says some modders use generative AI to code mods, raising maintenance and future-proofing concerns. It is a discussion starter, not proof of how common it is. Project Rene, per PC Gamer's January 9 background, is a mobile-first social multiplayer life sim, and newer leaks about it are unconfirmed.

Becca HartwellOkay, so last night my Sim woke up, walked past a full fridge, and then cried in the shower for six hours. Nobody told her to do any of that.

Danny ReyesThe autonomy really said, "Choose violence."

Becca HartwellEvery time.

Danny ReyesDid she at least get the moodlet?

Becca HartwellOh, she got three. Anyway, sul sul, everybody. You're listening to The Plumbob Report. I'm Becca, and that chaos goblin next to me is Danny.

Danny ReyesGuilty. And Becca, it's October, which means the news pile is spooky in all the wrong ways.

Becca HartwellWait, really? Spooky how?

Danny ReyesThere's a big patch being teased, plus some Marketplace drama that has the community very loud.

Becca HartwellOoh, and I know you have opinions on the AI mod argument too.

Danny ReyesSo many opinions. Like a whole thread.

Becca HartwellHold that thread for a minute, though. This week's tour is short on certainty and long on speculation, so we're gonna label which is which as we go.

Danny ReyesLabels on everything, like a very anxious pantry.

Becca HartwellTotally. But before we go gossiping, we should get the solid ground down.

Danny ReyesRight. Receipts first, vibes second.

Becca HartwellFirst, what has EA actually put on the record this month? Okay, so I pulled up EA's official Sims 4 news page, and the month is already busier than I expected. It starts October 1st with an entry called Free Content and New Performance Cache.

Danny ReyesFree content? Love that. Free is my favorite price.

Becca HartwellMine too. And that same entry has the words "performance cache" in the title, which sounds like the least sexy thing ever.

Danny ReyesWait, but is it? If it makes my game load faster, I'll write it a love letter.

Becca HartwellTotally. The page only gives the title, though, so I'm not gonna pretend I know what's inside.

Danny ReyesFair. No making up patch notes. We have a whole community for that.

Becca HartwellRight? Okay, next one. October 5th, EA's news index lists Introducing The Sims Maker Program and The Sims 4 Marketplace.

Danny ReyesHmm. Hold onto that one.

Becca HartwellOh, we will.

Danny ReyesBecause that title is going to matter a lot in about 10 minutes, and I'm already side-eyeing it.

Becca HartwellWhich is why I'm not saying more yet. Just file it away. Official title, October 5th. Done.

Danny ReyesFiled. Under, uh... Huh.

Becca HartwellOkay. October 8th is the fun one. The index has the spooky collection, which is apparel and accessories.

Danny ReyesOoh, clothes. So my Sims can finally dress like they're haunted.

Becca HartwellHonestly, they were already dressed like it. Now it's on purpose.

Danny ReyesMotherlode energy right there. Spooky outfits for everybody.

Becca HartwellAnd the same entry comes with a Simstober challenge flyer of Halloween goals.

Danny ReyesWait, goals? Like a checklist?

Becca HartwellThat's how the page describes it, "A flyer of Halloween goals."

Danny ReyesI'm in. I love a checklist I'm going to ignore by day three.

Becca HartwellYou and me both. Pumpkin carving, ghost encounters, whatever they are. I'll fail at the second one.

Danny ReyesYour Sims will get distracted by a toilet. It's inevitable.

Becca HartwellIt's never not the toilet.

Danny ReyesHere's the thing about title-only news, though. A title tells you the topic and nothing about the size. Free content could be a tiny thing or a big one, and a list can't tell us which.

Becca HartwellRight. And that's why I keep saying the page only gives us the headline. If you want the real details, go read the entries yourself instead of trusting two people with microphones.

Danny ReyesWhich is a weird advice for a podcast, but I stand by it. Also, notice the three entries are different flavors. One sounds like game upkeep. One sounds like a program. One sounds like fashion and fun.

Becca HartwellThat's a good way to put it. Upkeep, program, and fun. And the fun one is the only one where the description tells us exactly what we're getting.

Danny ReyesWhich makes it the easiest one to get excited about. No mystery, no subtext, just spooky clothes.

Becca HartwellWhereas the Marketplace one is all subtext. Anyway, I'm keeping my mouth shut about it until we get there.

Danny ReyesSo quick count: free content, a Marketplace headline, spooky clothes, and a challenge flyer.

Becca HartwellThat's the official list this month. It's pretty short, honestly.

Danny ReyesShort and kind of sweet, which is suspicious because nothing here says "big patch".

Becca HartwellRight? Official news is the appetizer.

Danny ReyesAnd the main course is the thing everyone's whispering about. Becca, you've seen the chatter.

Becca HartwellOh, I have. Buckle up. Okay, so the whispers. A fan site called Sims Community ran a piece on October 9th, and it says an EA community manager, EA Cade, hinted on the Sims Discord about a big patch.

Danny ReyesDefine big.

Becca HartwellThe article's title quotes the line, "We got a big one dropping this month," and the report says the hint was of a possibly mod-breaking patch.

Danny ReyesUgh, mod-breaking. Even with a "possibly" in front of it, that's a phrase that makes every Sims player's stomach drop.

Becca HartwellRight? I can imagine every creator reading that and going pale.

Danny ReyesSo when do we get actual details?

Becca HartwellThe report says a laundry list is expected in about two weeks. So right now it's a hint and a vibe.

Danny ReyesA hint and a vibe. Love that for us. The least specific kind of news.

Becca HartwellTotally. But the same article recaps what the team has been focused on this month, and that part is food. Dining, drinks, all of it.

Danny ReyesWait, really? Food? Not like a new pack hype thing?

Becca HartwellFood, dining, and drinks. That's the October focus the report describes.

Danny ReyesOkay. I'm not mad. Dine Out has needed love for a while, you know what I mean?

Becca HartwellFunny you say that, because the list of things under investigation includes Dine Out bug fixes.

Danny ReyesNo way.

Becca HartwellYep, and there's more. Global and Per-Sim muscle and weight controls.

Danny ReyesHmm, Per-Sim. So I could set one Sim's body and not the whole household?

Becca HartwellThat's how I read it. Global controls and per Sim controls, both listed as under investigation.

Danny ReyesOkay, that's actually a big deal for people who build whole families. I'm just saying.

Becca HartwellTotally. Then there's a calorie and pricing balance pass.

Danny ReyesCalories and pricing. So my Sim eats a burger and the burger finally costs what a burger should cost?

Becca HartwellI mean, come on. We've all paid some wild prices for a sad plate of pasta.

Danny ReyesA plate of pasta that costs more than the lot's rent? That Sim is not okay.

Becca HartwellAnd the last one is my favorite, dirty dishes left in odd places.

Danny ReyesStop.

Becca HartwellI'm serious. That's on the list.

Danny ReyesOh, that is peak Autonomy. Dirty dishes in odd places is basically the whole game already. My Sims have left plates on the floor, on the pool edge, in a bathroom.

Becca HartwellWait, so is it a fix or a feature?

Danny ReyesRight, that's my question. Are they fixing it or are they adding more of it?

Becca HartwellHonestly, I think it's a fix. The report lists it under things being looked at.

Danny ReyesSure, but you know my trust level for Sim behavior. A plate on a toilet lid is not a bug, it's a lifestyle.

Becca HartwellOkay, but think about what it would mean if the Dine Out fixes are real. Anyone who runs a restaurant lot knows how many ways that can go wrong.

Danny ReyesOh, the dinner service drama alone, Sims standing around a table like it's a hostage negotiation.

Becca HartwellAnd the calorie and pricing pass is the one I'd watch because it touches every meal. We don't know what balance means yet, so I'm not promising cheaper burgers.

Danny ReyesFair. I'll keep my burger dreams in the realistic range.

Becca HartwellAnd on the muscle and weight controls, I'm curious how they'd feel in practice, but all we have is the phrase. No screenshots, no details.

Danny ReyesRight. So it's a phrase on a list of things under investigation. The phrase is not the feature.

Becca HartwellOkay. Quick reality check, though, before everyone starts writing wish lists. None of this is confirmed.

Danny ReyesYeah. It's all under investigation.

Becca HartwellAnd the article itself notes that features still in development may not ship.

Danny ReyesWhich is the Sims way. Something sits in a Sim's inventory for a year and then poof.

Becca HartwellSo hold your excitement at about half a cup, dirty dishes included.

Danny ReyesUgh. Half a cup, fine. But here's what's nagging me.

Becca HartwellThe mods.

Danny ReyesThe mods. If this patch could break them, then what happens to everything people have been paying for or downloading for free?

Becca HartwellOkay, and I wanna be careful here because the report only says possibly. Nobody has said which mods or how many or whether anything breaks at all.

Danny ReyesRight. So this is a what if, not a forecast. But what ifs are how Simmers plan their weekends.

Becca HartwellWell, true. If you've got a heavily modded game, the sensible instinct is to wait and see before you update. Check whether your favorite creators say anything first.

Danny ReyesAnd maybe keep a copy of your save somewhere safe. Not because anyone said disaster is coming, just because it's cheap insurance.

Becca HartwellTotally. Honestly, that's good advice any month, patch tease or not.

Danny ReyesNow, flip it to the creator side. If you make mods, a maybe breaking patch is a maybe homework assignment. You don't know the size of it until the details land.

Becca HartwellAnd that's where the laundry list matters. Two weeks of not knowing is a long time when you might have to revisit your own work.

Danny ReyesTwo weeks of refreshing the Discord, basically.

Becca HartwellOoh, which with that Marketplace news from earlier gets way spicier. Oh, I have thoughts.

Danny ReyesThe fan site Sims Community has a front page listing current stories as of around the 9th through the 12th.

Becca HartwellMm-hmm.

Danny ReyesThe other is about a Sims 4 maker reported to be running a private monetized marketplace. So a side shop with money in it.

Becca HartwellWait, really?

Danny ReyesReported. That's the word. Hang on to it.

Becca HartwellYeah, so let's be careful here. Sims Community is a fan site. Those stories are their own reporting, and the marketplace claims come from the community.

Danny ReyesTotally. These are allegations. I'm not handing anybody a verdict. I'm just saying the front page exists and people are chewing on it.

Becca HartwellAnd I'll say, I like that you didn't name anybody because nobody's named in what we have.

Danny ReyesBecause nobody's named. I have no name, no screenshot, no proof of the money part, just a headline-ish line.

Becca HartwellWhich is how rumors in this community go, a one-line listing and by dinner it's a whole saga.

Danny ReyesI have personally written the saga in my head. It had a villain and a soundtrack.

Becca HartwellOf course it did. Okay, but there is official stuff to hang this on, right?

Danny ReyesYes. EA's own Sims 4 News Index has that Marketplace and Maker Program announcement dated October 5th.

Becca HartwellMm. So the program and the marketplace came out of EA's front door.

Danny ReyesRight. And that's the backdrop. Official launch on one side, a modder poking at it and a maker rumor on the other.

Becca HartwellAnd I mean, come on. Any time you open a creator program with money anywhere near it, people are gonna test the fences.

Danny ReyesSure, but testing fences is different from the fence being down. We don't know which this is.

Becca HartwellFair. Honestly, I'm more curious what EA says, if anything. Silence is a kind of answer too.

Danny ReyesOoh, and silence plus a big patch on the horizon? That's a Sim staring at a wall at 3:00 AM.

Becca HartwellStop. But yeah, that's the open question. Nothing confirmed.

Danny ReyesNothing confirmed. We watch, we wait, and we keep the word allegation taped to the monitor

Becca HartwellAnd let me say what it would mean if any of it turned out to be true, because that's what people actually care about. Not drama, just can I trust the place I'm shopping?

Danny ReyesRight. If a storefront can be hacked, that's a trust question for buyers. And if someone in a creator program runs a side shop, that's a fairness question for everyone else in the program. But those are ifs, big ifs.

Becca HartwellBig ifs with no names and no confirmation. For now, the useful move is to stay curious and not pile on anybody.

Danny ReyesWhich is hard on the internet, but we'll try, mostly.

Becca HartwellSpeaking of mods, there's a quieter debate going on, and it's about who's actually writing them now.

Danny ReyesOh, the robot thing. Yeah, that one doesn't come with a ladder joke. It's weirder.

Becca HartwellWeirder is right. An opinion piece on Sims Community titled "The Rise of Sims 4 AI Mods and the Challenge of Long-Term Support" says some modders have started using generative AI to write their code.

Danny ReyesWait, really? Like a chatbot is writing my Sims career overhaul?

Becca HartwellMaybe. The piece says it's early, but it argues it's already causing trouble for long-term maintenance and future-proofing.

Danny ReyesFuture-proofing. Oh, no.

Becca HartwellRight? And if nobody really understands the code, fixing it gets harder. That's the worry as I read it.

Danny ReyesHmm. I'll be honest here. I wanna stay fair to modders here. Plenty of them do this for free, and I'm protective of that.

Becca HartwellSame, and that's the catch. It's one opinion piece. It's a discussion starter, not proof that this is widespread.

Danny ReyesSo nobody's counting how many mods are machine-made?

Becca HartwellNope. Nothing in the piece says that. It's a worry, not a headcount.

Danny ReyesOkay, so it's a vibe with a warning label. And honestly, a little patience for the people making our free stuff goes a long way, whatever tools they use.

Becca HartwellOoh, agreed. Okay, before I forget, we have to do one caution thing because Project Rene leaks keep floating around.

Danny ReyesOh, the leaks. My feed has opinions.

Becca HartwellI bet. So background first, PC Gamer reported on January ninth that EA's own blog post confirmed Project Rene is a mobile-first social multiplayer life sim.

Danny ReyesMobile first. Ugh. I remember the reaction.

Becca HartwellYeah. PC Gamer also recorded fan disappointment over leaked play test images.

Danny ReyesSo the leaks aren't new. People were already bummed about screenshots.

Becca HartwellRight. That's January coverage. So any newer leak reports on fan sites, treat them as unconfirmed.

Danny ReyesWhich means don't let a blurry image decide your whole week. Rumors wander into the pool without a ladder.

Becca HartwellOh, Danny. Fair. Enjoy the speculation, but hold it loosely.

Danny ReyesTotally. And save your heartbreak for something official.

Becca HartwellDeal. Okay, time to send everybody back to their lots. Okay, so one breath. An official October of free stuff and spooky outfits, a food-heavy patch whisper, some loud marketplace allegations, and modders letting a robot write their code.

Danny ReyesWow. Becca, you just speedran the episode.

Becca HartwellI have a lot of tabs open. Seriously, though, most of that is chatter. The patch details aren't confirmed, and the marketplace claims are community-sourced.

Danny ReyesRight. Things can change, get walked back, or turn out to be somebody's very dramatic Tuesday.

Becca HartwellTotally.

Danny ReyesSo if EA drops the real patch notes next week and half of what we said is wrong, come yell at us nicely.

Becca HartwellNicely, please. And if this was useful, subscribe and leave a review. It helps other Sim nerds find us.

Danny ReyesAnd share your wildest Sim stories with us at Plumbob Report. I want the unhinged ones, the Sim who cooked dinner in the bathtub. I know you have one.

Becca HartwellMine is a toddler and a very confused Ridge. I'll save it.

Danny ReyesNow I need that story immediately.

Becca HartwellDeal. And seriously, thank you for hanging out with us. Whether you're a builder, a legacy player, or just here for the chaos, we're glad you pulled up a chair.

Danny ReyesSame here. Stay curious, stay kind to your modders, and keep your pool ladders handy.

Becca HartwellGo play something, everybody. Make a mess on purpose for once. Sul sul.

Danny ReyesSul sul.
