Everyone in car washing knows the name Sonny's. Far fewer know there was a real Sonny — a Navy veteran who opened a full-serve wash in Boston in 1949 after a relative handed him a magazine article, and whose name now sits on the biggest car wash equipment company in the world. In this episode of The Wash Exchange, Blair Woolcott sits down with Paul Fazio — Sonny's son, and the man who spent four decades turning a family operation into the industry's most dominant force. Paul was a quarter away from a degree and accepted into law school when he walked away from it all for the wash business he swore he'd never join. Paul shares the stories behind it all: what a full-serve wash actually looked like in 1949, the gas pumps and the Polaroid camera, his father cutting chamois in "retirement" until it accidentally became a manufacturing empire, and the 1991 trade that looked wrong on paper — selling his share of a 13-tunnel operation to buy into a small parts supplier. Now able to speak freely, Paul gives his unfiltered take on where the industry is heading: unlimited wash memberships, the slowdown in consolidation, what it means for the independent single-site operator, and the mistakes Australia — roughly fifteen years behind the US on express and membership — still has time to skip. Real stories. Real results. This one is 40 years of car wash history from the man who lived it.
