In this episode, we're diving into four English idioms that native speakers use all the time in everyday conversation. If you want to sound more natural and confident when you speak English, these are must-know expressions. Let's break them down one by one. 1. Break the Ice Meaning: To reduce tension or awkwardness in a social situation and make people feel more comfortable. Example: I'm going to break the ice with a simple question. Whether you're at a party, a job interview, or a first date, breaking the ice helps everyone relax and start talking naturally. 2. Hit the Road Meaning: To leave a place or start a journey. Example: We should hit the road early. This one is perfect for travel conversations — use it whenever you're heading out on a trip or leaving somewhere. 3. Once in a Blue Moon Meaning: Something that happens very rarely. Example: I see him once in a blue moon. If you want to describe how infrequently something happens, this colorful idiom is a great alternative to just saying "rarely." 4. Under the Weather Meaning: Feeling slightly ill or not well. Example: I'm feeling a bit under the weather today. Next time you're not feeling 100%, skip "I'm sick" and try this more natural-sounding phrase instead. Practice with Shadowing The best way to make these idioms stick is through shadowing — listening to a native speaker and repeating right along with them, matching the rhythm and pronunciation as closely as possible. In today's episode, we practice 10 real-life sentences for each idiom, from simple to more advanced. 🎧 Listen to the full episode, repeat out loud, and shadow every sentence. 🔁 Do this daily, and you'll notice real improvement in your fluency and pronunciation. 👉 Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share if this episode helped you! Welcome back to English Shadowing with Temmy! In this episode, we focus on four everyday past tense words that native speakers use constantly in daily conversation: lost, paid, sold, and threw. Practicing these words with real-life sentences will help you speak more naturally and confidently about things that already happened. Let's dive in. Lost is the past tense of "lose," used when something slips away, disappears, or is no longer in your possession. He lost his keys again. She lost her job last month. Paid is the past tense of "pay," used when money is given in exchange for something or a debt is settled. He paid the bill quickly. We paid off our debt last year. Sold is the past tense of "sell," used when something is given to someone else in exchange for money. He sold his old car to his neighbor last week. She sold her paintings at the market. Threw is the past tense of "throw," used when something is tossed or launched through the air. He threw the ball to his son. She threw the pillow at her brother. Practicing these four past tense words with the shadowing method will help you build fluency and speak about past events more naturally. Try repeating each sentence out loud, matching the rhythm and pronunciation as closely as you can. Want to take your shadowing practice further? Episode 22: A Piece of Cake, Fall in Love, In Fact, After All Welcome back to English Shadowing with Temmy! In Episode 22, we're practicing four everyday English patterns that native speakers use all the time: a piece of cake, fall in love, in fact, and after all. A Piece of Cake This phrase describes something that is very easy to do. You'll hear it in casual conversations when someone wants to say a task, a test, or a challenge was simple. For example: "This test was a piece of cake" or "Driving in the city became a piece of cake." Fall in Love This pattern describes developing romantic feelings for someone or something. It can be used for people, places, or even hobbies. For example: "I fell in love with this city" or "He fell in love with the idea of traveling alone." In Fact This expression is used to emphasize or correct what was just said. It often introduces a surprising detail or a stronger statement. For example: "I like tea. In fact, I drink it every morning" or "In fact, it became one of the company's biggest successes." After All This phrase is used to emphasize an unexpected result or to remind someone of something important. For example: "Maybe she was right after all" or "After all, we had prepared for months." With the shadowing method, listening to these sentences and repeating them out loud helps you build natural rhythm, improve pronunciation, and remember these patterns without memorizing grammar rules. This episode is perfect for beginner to intermediate learners who want to sound more natural in everyday conversations and build real speaking confidence through daily practice. How to use this episode: listen to each sentence, pause, and repeat it out loud. Try to copy the rhythm and pronunciation as closely as possible. The more you shadow, the more natural these patterns will become in your own speech. Keep practicing every day, and you'll notice real progress over time. Learning English takes time — but the right phrases can make a huge difference. In this episode of English Shadowing with Temmy, we focus on four powerful everyday expressions: fall behind , be worth it , get the hang of , and sort out . These are real, natural phrases that native speakers use every single day. 1. Fall Behind To fall behind means to fail to keep up with others or with what is expected of you. It can happen at school, at work, with payments, or in any area of life where consistency matters. Think about a student who misses a week of classes. When they return, they've fallen behind the rest of the group. The good news is that falling behind isn't permanent — with effort, you can always catch up. Don't fall behind on your homework — it's hard to catch up. She worked extra hours to avoid falling behind on the project. 2. Be Worth It This phrase means that the effort, time, or money you spent was justified by the result. It's a phrase of reflection and reward — something you say when a difficult experience turns out to have been valuable. Imagine spending years learning a new language. It's frustrating at times. But the moment you have your first real conversation with a native speaker, you think: It was worth it. The trip was long, but it was worth it. All those late nights studying were worth it. 3. Get the Hang of This phrase describes the moment when something difficult starts to feel natural. It's about the learning curve — that gradual process of going from confused to comfortable. Everyone knows this feeling. When you first learned to ride a bike, it seemed impossible. But one day, it just clicked. You got the hang of it. The same thing happens with English. With consistent practice, the pronunciation, the rhythm, the expressions — they all start to feel natural. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it soon. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes much easier. 4. Sort Out To sort something out means to solve a problem, resolve a situation, or organize something that's in a mess. It's a phrase of action — taking control and bringing order to chaos. When there's a misunderstanding at work, you sort it out. When your schedule is overwhelming, you sit down and sort it out. It's one of those phrases that works in almost any situation. We need to sort out who is responsible for what. If you sort out your priorities, everything else will fall into place. Why Shadowing Works In this episode, each phrase is practiced through ten real-life sentences, repeated four times each. This repetition is the heart of the shadowing method. By hearing and saying each sentence multiple times, your brain starts to recognize the pattern — and your mouth starts to produce it naturally. The key is consistency. Even fifteen minutes of daily shadowing will produce real results over time. Don't fall behind on your practice. Once you get the hang of it, you'll realize it was absolutely worth it — and any challenges along the way, you'll sort out one episode at a time.
