Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! This week, Jesse recaps Warped Tour in Long Beach! The vibes, the bands, the people there, were all great and made for a great weekend. Later, the moshing debates continue as the guys talk "rowboats" in mosh pits, the level of skill required for a circle pits, and bands calling out moshers during shows. The dads also discuss how dad life can often be very much like the punk/hardcore scene. Dads today have to choose to go against the grain, and put aside the self-serving nature of our current culture, and do things that don't make sense to a lot of people around us who don't have families to take care of. Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! This week, Nate and Jesse are joined by a very special guest, Jay from Bayway! Jay hops onto the podcast while on the road with No Cure, Big Ass Truck and Boltcutter. The guys talk about live shows, the energy that Bayway brings to each tour, despite often being the "odd duck" on the ticket. Jay also talks about Hellfest, and how the payoff after months of planning and re-planning was so huge and those who made it this past year know how special of a time it was. As a dad, Jay has made some major decisions for the benefit of his family, including making the decision to get sober, almost three years ago now. It's not an easy thing to switch from "Jay from Bayway Mode" while on tour, fronting a hardcore band, to "Dad Mode" when he gets home to mulch the lawn and get the backyard ready for graduation parties, but Jay's here for every minute of it. They also discuss the reviewing hardcore releases and albums, and whether critic reviews are helpful, or if it's too hard to put some sort of a "grade" on a form of art that can be completely subjective. The guys also go over the differences between introverts and extroverts, and how dads can be both, although putting labels on people is usually not helpful. One thing is for sure, both introverts and extroverts can be secretly dealing with emotional or mental issues, so be sure to check in on all of your friends, no matter what they're like! Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! This week, Jesse and Nate debate whether In and Out is actually good, Jesse talks cruises, and they talk about taking your kids to hardcore shows - is it a good thing to do, and if so, what are the rules of engagement with kids there? Also, the guys reveal another layer of their inner souls and reveal their guilty pleasure bands that they've been too afraid to admit up until this point and it does not go as Nate planned... The dads also go over the idea of how to deal with the stress of life in healthy ways, versus unhealthy ways. Unhealthy ways of dealing with stress often involved quick "fixes" that are never actually permanent fixes, but they make you feel better momentarily, only to leave you feeling the same, if not worse once it wears off. Longevity is the name of the game when it comes to mental health. Pain sucks, but it's not always a bad thing in and of itself, and if we can embrace it and power through it, we'll be better off in the long run. As the Great Mosh Debate continues, a few things are becoming clear: people in the hardcore community have strong opinions about moshing (to put it lightly), and at this point, "hardcore" music covers a wide spectrum: from deathcore, to beatdown, to hardcore punk, to what Nate is now calling "pop-core". Lots of folks think that they have the market cornered on what is actually "hardcore", but just like the people in the scene, heavy bands are all different, and the diversity makes this growing scene better as the years go by. Later, Nate talks about the frustrations of depression and anxiety. Not only are those two things incredibly difficult to deal with on a daily basis, but oftentimes, guys can feel guilty or even angry that they are experiencing those negative emotions because everything in life is seemingly fine. It's in those moments that it never really helps to have someone just tell you to "look on the brightside" or try to list off all of the great things in your life. What can really help is just having someone to listen and not judge, knowing that depression and anxiety often don't have a cause that we can easily explain away.
