Hi, I’m Tash South, interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. In this podcast, I share practical renovation advice, along with deeper insights into home and belonging.
Listen on Apple Podcastssouthplacestudio.com/renoversity I have some exciting news - the doors to RenoVersity are open once again! Over my many years in this reno world, I’ve seen people struggle with renovating in so many ways, and that’s exactly why I created RenoVersity - my clear 5 Pillar step-by-step system that helps you plan, design and deliver your renovation in the right order. So you avoid costly mistakes, overwhelm and constant second-guessing. It's been a little while since the course was last available because, behind the scenes, I've been busy working on a new renovation project of my own: an auction apartment that I completely renovated back to brick and have now rented out above market value. The entire project went from purchase to tenant in just five months using the very same RenoVersity system I teach inside the course. (But that's definitely a story for another podcast episode!) I've also been busy adding some exciting new features, including the On-Demand AI RenoVersity Companion , so you can get answers to your renovation questions whenever you need them, and a Private Audio Series , so you can learn while you're commuting or on the go. RenoVersity is packed with everything I've created and refined while managing real renovation projects over the years: video lessons, planning guides, calculators, templates, cheat sheets and practical resources to help you plan and manage your renovation with confidence. The course is now open for enrolment, and in this episode, I'll walk you through exactly what's included, who it's for, and how it can help you create your dream home. The course is now open for enrolment and inside this episode of the podcast, I talk you through exactly what RenoVersity is all about. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! In this episode, I reflect on the meaning of belonging in a world that can often feel divided, uncertain and increasingly hostile. As an immigrant, I've been thinking a lot about what it means to feel at home and how fragile that sense of belonging can sometimes be. I explore how our earliest experiences of belonging, or not belonging, shape the way we move through the world and influence what we seek from our homes as adults. When we move countries, cities or go through major life changes, home often becomes something we are trying to recreate rather than simply a place we live. I talk about our deep human need for connection, safety and acceptance, and why creating a home that reflects who we truly are matters more than ever. This is a conversation about identity, home, community and finding your place in the world. Because belonging isn't something someone else gives you. It's something we can create for ourselves through the spaces we live in, the people we welcome in and the life we choose to build. It's not about having the biggest home or the most beautiful one. It's about having a place where you can be fully yourself. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! Maybe the goal isn’t to ‘finish’ your home… maybe the goal is to create a foundation that allows it to grow with you. We’ve all had that thought… “Once the renovation is done, everything will finally feel complete.” But I have to say, that moment does come, but also… life evolves. In this episode, I’m unpacking this idea, because the goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating a home that can grow, shift, and evolve with your life and your family needs. If you’re in the middle of a renovation, planning one, or just feeling like your home is never quite “there”… I’m hoping that this episode will shift your perspective. Inside, I chat about The illusion of the finished home and how we’ve been conditioned by before-and-after shows and social media to believe there’s a perfect end point, but real homes just don’t work like that. Homes are living, evolving spaces that need to adapt as your life changes, whether that’s family, work, routines, or unexpected life events. I also cover a very important point that has been at the core of this podcast from day one, the power of getting the base right. Layout, light, flow, and storage are everything. These are the hardest (and most expensive) things to change later, so getting them right from the start is gold. A meaningful home is layered slowly and built over time with pieces that reflect your life, memories, and identity, so join me inside to dive deeper – I’ll see you there. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! Have you ever walked into a space and felt instantly calm… while someone else feels completely unsettled? In this episode, I’m introducing you to a concept I’ve recently discovered called Umwelt, and I think it will completely reframe how we think about our homes. I came across the German word, Umwelt in my recent research, and it piqued my interest. I've come across so many different words over the years, in terms of interiors and design, from Danish Hygge to Swedish Legom, to Dutch gezelligheid, to Japanese Ikigai and Wabisabi - all these beautiful words come from all these beautiful different cultures, and what they all point to really, is the same concept of our homes being not just visual, they are emotional, sensory, and deeply personal spaces. The concept of Umwelt comes from a biologist called Jakob von Uexküll, who was fascinated by how different animals, like elephants, bats, dogs and even insects, each experience the world in their own unique way. And I think this is also so relevant when it comes to our homes, because our senses are experiencing our homes and the spaces around us, whether we are conscious of it or not. Umwelt is a German word with no direct English translation, but at its core, it describes something quite powerful, the unique way each of us experiences the world around us. We don’t experience our homes or our surroundings as they are. We experience them as we are. I think the concept of Umwelt connects so beautifully back to home, and back to these deeper conversations I'm starting to have about what home means to us and our sense of home and belonging, and how we experience what is around us. Come and join me inside this episode to explore this more, I chat about how your personality, your past, your sensory preferences, and even your daily habits shape how your home feels to you. Inside This Episode How Umwelt shows up in real homes Hidden factors shaping how we perceive our space (light, clutter, layout & more) How to design for your Umwelt Resources & Mentions Episode 1: Common Renovation Regrets & Concerns Ep isode 2: What is a Successful Home Renovation? In this episode, I sit down with the brilliant, Emma Forrest, in her gorgeous, cosy, feminine home. Emma, is a novelist, memoirist and filmmaker, and her work is known for its emotional precision and unflinching honesty, exploring love, identity, grief, and the ways our past shapes who we become. From her early days as a teenage columnist interviewing cultural icons in 90s London, to her deeply personal memoirs and films, Emma has built a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. Following divorce and a major life shift from Los Angeles back to London, Emma reflects on starting again, and what it’s meant to create a home from scratch, here in her home town, London. In this episode, we explore what home really is, not just the physical space, but the emotional architecture behind it. We talk about our shared childhood experiences of being othered, and how our childhood homes, loss, and movement across countries shape our sense of belonging. Emma shares how living in what felt like the “wrong” house for her, a new build devoid of history and texture, deeply impacted her mental health, and why she feels most at ease in spaces that carry stories. A quiet testament to just how profoundly our surroundings shape us. We also talk about Emma’s deep connection to light and views, and why she will always choose a top-floor, for openness, safety and epic views. As someone who loves entertaining and designing my entire home for that purpose, it was very interesting chatting to Emma about the reasons and need for creating a home for cocooning - a reminder that your home doesn’t have to perform for anyone else, but can simply just function for you alone, and hold you and yours. Towards the end of the episode, Emma shares something quite extraordinary, a deeply personal experience of mentally revisiting her childhood home, moving through it room by room, drawer by drawer, a moment that reminds us that the right home never truly leaves us. Closure doesn’t always arrive when we expect it to, and that sometimes we need to return, even if only in memory. It leaves us with a simple truth, that a well-lived home, much like a well-lived life, is never perfect, it is layered, shaped by change, and sometimes chaos, and filled with traces of everything that came before. This is one of my favourite episodes so far, and I hope it will resonate deeply with anyone drawn to the emotional side of making a home. And the ways identity, belonging, and personal history shape the spaces we can create to make a home that help to heal us after life throws us a curveball. What if your home was quietly shaping your habits… without you even realising? In this episode, I explore one of the most powerful ideas from Atomic Habits by James Clear, that our environment plays a huge role in the habits we build (or struggle to maintain). As renovators and homeowners, this is where things get really interesting. Because your home isn’t just a backdrop to your life, It’s an active participant in it. I’ll walk you through how small, intentional design choices can make good habits easier, reduce daily friction, and ultimately help you create a home that truly supports the way you want to live. Whether you want to exercise more, feel calmer, be more productive, or simply make everyday life flow better, this episode will help you start seeing your home in a new way. Inside This Episode Why your home environment has more impact on your habits than motivation How design can either support or sabotage your daily routines The power of visual cues (and how to use them to your advantage) How to reduce friction in your home through better layout and flow Simple ways to design for focus, calm, and productivity How to shape your home around the person you want to become What you see every day influences what you do every day and a well-designed home should make the right choices feel easy and natural. It’s not only about the big renovation, it’s about the small shifts too. Moving something or repurposing a a space. Small changes in your home can lead to big, lasting behaviour shifts. Making one habit at a time just that little bit easier. Layout is more than just where walls go, it’s how your home feels to live in every day. In this episode, I’m talking about all the the subtle but powerful ways layout shapes our mood, stress levels, and how easily (or not) our lives flow through our homes. I chat about why bad circulation quietly causes daily frustration. How thresholds and transitions create calm and clarity. Why adding a pause point or two in your home design can encourage those small moments of stillness we all crave for. And one of my favourites - how to design your layout for better human connection. Because our homes just simply work better when we consider and plan for human needs, like connection, ease, flow, and how we want to feel when we open that front door after a really long day. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! Some designers create beautiful things. Others create work that carries a story. And today’s guest is someone whose work does both. In this episode I talk Eva Sonaike, a London-based textile and interior designer whose work is instantly recognisable for its bold palettes, layered patterns, and joyful energy. But what makes Eva’s work so compelling isn’t just the colour — it’s the narrative behind it. Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Eva’s work is brimming with colour, confidence, and a real sense of cultural pride. Her collections celebrate the richness of West African culture while translating it into contemporary interiors in a way that feels modern and elegant. In the conversation, Eva refers to The Yoruba culture she draws from, which is known for its rich visual language — bold colour combinations, rhythmic pattern, and textiles that carry meaning as well as beauty. In many ways, you can see that influence in Eva’s work: confident colour, layered prints, and designs that feel alive with story and symbolism. Before founding her own design brand, Eva worked as a fashion journalist. But finding a gap in the market for homeware that reflected her heritage when decorating her own home, she began with a small collection of cushions which quickly grew into a brand stocked by some of the most prestigious retailers. In this conversation, we talk about colour, about how heritage and identity shape the spaces we create, and about why our homes should tell the story of who we are. We also explore something I think is incredibly important; how design can help us create spaces that feel grounding, meaningful, and deeply personal in a world that often feels anything but. Eva brings such warmth and honesty to this conversation. I think you’re going to feel incredibly inspired by the way she sees the role of home in our lives. I interviewed Eva in her colourful and creative London studio, so take a peek on over on my YouTube channel to see some of her incredible work and grab some inspo on how to make your own home feel grounding, vibrant and expressive, hit that play button and we’ll see you inside. This is my conversation with Eva Sonaike. You can find more on Eva here: Website: evasonaike.com Instagram ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! I'm back and in this episode, I’m sharing a personal update on why the podcast returned a little later than planned… and where it’s heading next. Life, business, a new renovation project, RenoVersity updates, and even a book in the works have all been bubbling away behind the scenes. But more than that, I wanted to talk about something many of us are quietly carrying right now: the weight of the world. When global news cycles feel relentless, economic pressures build, when identity and belonging feel fragile, it can all feel very overwhelming. Inside I look at some small, simple things we can all do at home to gently reset and find a moment of sanctuary from the outside world, and these cold, dark months of the year. From simple rituals to finding reasons to celebrate, lets explore what can we do inside our homes to feel steady again? ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! In this episode, I cover one of the sometimes overlooked elements of your interior: window dressings. Most people leave curtains and blinds until the very end of a renovation, then panic-choose something “good enough” and wonder why the room still doesn’t feel quite right. In this episode I walk you through how to think about your windows like a designer: starting with the view outside, privacy, the light you want to invite in (or block out), and the mood you’re trying to create. There really is more than you might think to choosing the right window dressings. I’ll go through the curtains vs blinds vs shutters debate, to what on earth to do with radiators under windows, to why short curtains really get my goat. Plus lots more - I didn’t realise just how much I had to say about window dressings! If you’ve ever felt stuck on how to dress your windows, this one’s for you. So if you have a window that needs some power dressing, I’ll see you inside. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! In this week’s episode was unexpectedly inspired by the kids’ TV show— Bluey —watching this episode with my daughter sparked a reflection on the mental load many of us carry, particularly mothers and caregivers, and how our homes can either add to that load… or ease it. Inside, I dive into the emotional impact of our home environments and explore how design—both big and small—can actively support relaxation, calm, and our wellbeing. From clutter and storage to sensory cues and micro-zones, this episode offers practical and thoughtful ways to make your home a place where you can actually exhale. If, like me, you’ve ever felt like you should be relaxing but just can’t switch off… this one’s for you. What we’ll cover: Why your home isn’t a neutral backdrop—and how it can impact your stress levels How visual clutter affects your brain and your ability to relax Big and small ways to reduce stress through design How to create intentional "micro-zones" for calm The importance of mini systems, and why they’re not just for productivity Simple sensory shifts that make a big impact on wellbeing Mentioned in this episode: Bluey – S3 E40 “Relax” (yes, it's brilliant—even for grown-ups) ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! Hello, I’m back this week with a little love for the small but mighty kitchen. If your kitchen didn’t get top billing—this episode is for you. Kitchens often have to work the hardest in the home, and when expanding isn’t an option, it’s all about making the most of what you have. Today, I’m sharing practical tips and a few interior design solutions to help you make your small kitchen feel bigger, brighter, and better. We’ll chat through: Lighting that flatters and functions – from hidden LEDs to layered lighting plans that bring warmth and brightness even to windowless kitchens. Layout love – why your floor plan is your best friend, how to test different configurations, and why every centimetre counts. Optical illusions – reflective surfaces, continuous flooring, and mirrored splashbacks that trick the eye and stretch the space. Storage (of course!) – deep drawers over cupboards, slim pull-out ladders, and even those genius kick drawers you might not have considered. Breaking the boundaries – how to borrow light and sightlines from adjacent rooms without knocking down all the walls. If you’ve got a small kitchen, don’t despair—you’re in the right place.
