Like I mentioned I took a brake for a few reasons. I got sick, I was busy with other projects and I also wasn't sure if I should make anything related to the studios that where getting striked. I feeling better and now that the strikes are over I want to release more episodes again. I started a discord server so please join and we can talk about animation history. I would love to know what you all want to learn more about. https://discord.gg/8yyNAwk3RY https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8h70jzr/ http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/559607/index.html https://animacam.tv/en/1803-2/ https://www.britannica.com/biography/J-Stuart-Blackton https://medium.com/@joedonan/before-disney-meet-the-father-of-american-animation-2f2e473fc9d1 https://www.victorian-cinema.net/blackton
I remembered learning about him in school but I didn't know about how we lost so many of his films. It is really such a shame. Doing research for this podcast has made me realized how important media preservation is. On another note I am going to take a brake from posting episodes for a while. I am currently working on multiple projects and so I needed to drop something. Don't worry episodes will return. http://www.frenchfilms.org/biography/georges-melies.html https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0617588/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm https://www.victorian-cinema.net/melies https://www.britannica.com/biography/Georges-Melies https://www.bfi.org.uk/features/georges-melies-autobiography
This was an interesting one to look up. I mostly did this episode cause have how often I see the recreation of the motorcycle scene from it. I had no idea that it had such a high budget but it makes sense. Some of those scenes would be hard to animate today so I can only image how much it took to animate them back then. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0960028/?ref_=tt_ov_dr https://akira.fandom.com/wiki/Akira_(anime) https://movies.fandom.com/wiki/Akira/Production https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/story-behind-film-akira/ https://www.linearity.io/blog/akira/ https://row.oneblockdown.it/blogs/archive/akira-anime-sabukaru-history-lesson https://cinemadailyus.com/news/akira-manga-artist-katsuhiro-otomo-working-on-new-project/ https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2014/05/03/books/book-reviews/akira/ https://medium.com/anitay-official/katsuhiro-otomo-retrospective-akira-7e00d49ca56f https://www.lambiek.net/artists/o/otomo_katsuhiro.htm https://akiramanga.com https://akira.fandom.com/wiki/Akira_(manga)
I remember loving chicken run when I was growing up. I do really recommend watching his work and supporting anyone that makes stop motion films. This was super interesting to look into. I had no idea that they had a union until now. I do hope that they gain some power and they improve the working conditions. We need artist to be happy and healthy so that they can make great art for us to enjoy. It does seem that the VFX team behind the marvel movies has voted to unionize. I defiantly would have mentioned that in this episode but I had already finished it before I heard. I wish them the best of luck. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/artist-rights/why-the-anime-industry-lacks-unions-and-how-that-could-change-a-veteran-producer-speaks-212042.html https://animationobsessive.substack.com/p/hayao-miyazaki-union-man https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/hayao-miyazakis-path-to-studio-ghibli/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/322909809_Blood_Sweat_Ink_and_Tears_Exploitation_of_Labour_in_the_Japanese_Animation_Industry https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2021-07-21/i-have-some-horror-stories-animator-talks-industry-problems-hopes-for-the-future/.175178 https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/7/2/20677237/anime-industry-japan-artists-pay-labor-abuse-neon-genesis-evangelion-netflix
