Listen on Apple PodcastsIn the latest Care Home Management magazine podcast, host Steve Hemsley talks to Metro Rod managing director Steve Chambers about why drainage and plumbing are often overlooked elements of care home governance, risk management and CQC outcomes. Chambers discusses how many care providers only think about drainage and plumbing when something goes wrong. However, failures can shut down kitchens, toilets, heating and hot water, directly impacting residents’ safety, dignity and infection control. He urges preventative maintenance with best practice including: Asset mapping to understand where a care home’s drains, manholes and lines run Regular servicing and CCTV surveys of drains and grease traps, especially in kitchens producing high meal volumes Paying specific attention to older buildings with clay or cast iron pipes prone to scale, cracking and root ingress Routine checks and servicing of boilers and TMVs (thermostatic mixing valves) every six months to prevent scalding and maintain water pressure. Chambers also explains why problems often appear at night and why care homes need a reliable primary and backup contractor, with genuine out-of-hours response. On CQC performance, he links good ratings to trained staff who can spot early warning signs (smells, slow drains, refilling toilets), have documented crisis plans, and understand compliance with food waste and drainage regulations. She provides important advice for care homes as the sector waits for new documents to be published. Care homes can save time and money be reassessing how they replace and maintain their assisted baths and showers. This is the message from moving and handling experts Medaco on the special Care Home Management podcast: ‘Top Assisted Bathing Trends That Won’t Drain Your Budget’. Medaco is vendor-neutral, and operations director Steve Smallridge says the overall design on baths has not changed much during the company’s 40 years supporting care homes, but there are now many more options. He adds that most baths last between 10-15 years, and providers need to decide when it is the most cost-effective time to replace assets rather than keep repairing them. Most care homes will replace baths one at a time and it is important to be aware of wear and tear, especially when it comes to infection control and prevention. Many baths are used for therapy nowadays as well as for general cleanliness, with features such as LED lights, spa and Bluetooth music options becoming more popular. Showers are also becoming a more popular choice for care homes and for residents as part of any en-suite facility. Installation manager Dave Hyde explains how new baths can be installed with minimum disruption, with many fixed in a resident’s room within one day. He also works with a nationwide team of engineers who advise care homes on how to get the most from their baths for longer. Tune in to all our industry-leading podcasts here .
