AmaraOh, I love this already.
OlaThat fight has technically been running for a hundred years, Amara.
AmaraA hundred years? Nobody's even declared a winner.
OlaDepends who you ask.
AmaraFair. Okay, so welcome back. I'm Amara, that's Ola, and this is the show where we drag Earth's messiest history into the light and argue about it.
OlaAnd this week, the argument comes to us. GSA Connects 2026, October 11th through 14th, Denver.
AmaraWait, wait. Say the theme again, because it's basically our whole show's origin story.
OlaThe official site names it Celebrating a Century of Continental Drift: Understanding Earth in Motion.
AmaraOh, they named the conference after our beef.
OlaIt's not our beef. It's geology's beef.
AmaraSame thing at this point.
OlaWe've never actually done the supercontinent cycle properly on this show.
AmaraNever. Pangaea, Rodinia, sitting right there untouched.
OlaThat changes now.
AmaraSo here's the plan. We go back to where this whole heresy started. Then we come back and tell you what a room full of geoscientists actually argued about in Denver.
OlaTwo mysteries, one century.
AmaraAnd one man is entirely to blame for starting it.
OlaSo picture this. Frankfurt, January 6th, 1912. A meteorologist, not even a geologist, walks into the Senckenberg Museum and tells a room of scientists the continents are moving.
AmaraWait, a meteorologist? That's already a red flag for these people, right?
OlaHuge one. He studied weather and ice, not rocks. The GFZ Research Institute pins that exact date and place for his first public talk on continental drift.
AmaraOkay, but here's what I need cleared up. Is that the famous book everyone quotes or something else?
OlaDifferent thing entirely. That lecture in 1912 is separate from his book, which came out in 1915.
AmaraAnd that book kept getting bigger.
OlaIt did. There's a third edition from 1922 that circulated way more widely, and honestly, a lot of the people who later tore him apart were arguing with that 1922 text, not the guy standing at the podium in 1912.
AmaraSo they're mad at a decade of revisions and blaming the original talk?
OlaPretty much.
AmaraOkay. Walk me through what he's actually claiming in that room, because I wanna know exactly how crazy this sounded in 1912.
OlaHe's telling geologists, whose entire field is built on continents sitting still, that Africa and South America used to be jammed together and drifted apart.
AmaraNo way. In front of the people whose whole careers say the opposite?
OlaThat's the room.
AmaraSo this isn't a guy gently raising a question. This is a meteorologist walking into the geology guild and telling them their foundational assumption is wrong.
OlaRight. And he's not apologizing for it either. He's got fossil matches, coastline shapes, the whole case.
AmaraBut nobody in that room has a mechanism yet, do they? Like, what's supposed to be pushing continents around?
OlaThat's exactly the hole in the argument, and it's the hole his critics are going to drive a truck through.
AmaraOh, I love it when a good idea has an obvious weak point. Makes the fight so much better.
OlaIt does, because he's not just some crank. He's making testable claims. Fossils on both sides of the Atlantic, mountain ranges that line up like puzzle pieces.
AmaraSo it's heresy with receipts.
OlaKind of, yeah. But receipts without a mechanism only get you so far with an establishment that already thinks the ground doesn't move.
AmaraSo he says his piece in Frankfurt, and then what? Everybody just quietly disagrees for a decade?
OlaNot quietly. Fourteen years later, the establishment gets an organized shot at answering him, and they take it in a packed room in New York.
AmaraOh, I already don't like where this is going for him.
OlaYou shouldn't. So picture the room. New York, late 1926, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists just decides to put drift on trial.
AmaraOoh, I love this. Like an actual symposium, not just angry letters to journals.
OlaRight. A proper gathering. American and European geologists in the same building arguing Wegener's hypothesis to his face. Well, not literally his face. He wasn't in the room.
AmaraDevastating absentee defendant.
OlaA 1928 writeup in Nature reviewed the whole proceedings afterwards, and it's basically a record of how badly the Americans thought this idea needed correcting.
AmaraSo this is the moment, right? This is the one everybody points to when they say American geology turned on drift.
OlaThat's the popular version, yeah. You can just hear it, geologist after geologist standing up one continent at a time going, "Where's your mechanism, sir?"
AmaraI wanna know who got the loudest applause for the meanest question.
OlaProbably whoever pointed out that Wegener needed continents to plow through solid ocean floor like it was soup.
AmaraWhich, fair, that part never worked.
OlaIt's the same gap we already flagged, no engine under the hood. New York just put a live audience and a printed record around it.
AmaraI mean, to be fair to the room, plate tectonics wasn't going to exist for another thirty years. They didn't have a mechanism to reach for even if they'd wanted to be generous.
OlaRight. Nobody in 1926 has seafloor spreading. Nobody has mantle convection. They've just got Wegener's fossils and coastlines against their gut sense that continents don't move.
AmaraSo for a hundred years, the story's been 1926, room full of skeptics, drift gets laughed out the door.
OlaThat's the story. Tidy, dramatic, great for a podcast called Open.
AmaraHypothetically.
OlaBut, and I want to be careful here, a symposium isn't a verdict. It's geologists arguing in a hotel ballroom, not a jury coming back.
AmaraSure, but the theory did go into the wilderness after this. Something buried it.
OlaAnd that matters because it means the loud room isn't wrong to be skeptical. They're reacting to a genuine gap, not just defending turf.
AmaraSure, but skepticism and burial aren't the same thing. Something turned, "We have questions," into, "This idea is dead in America." And the 1926 write-up alone doesn't tell us what did that.
OlaRight. And that's the part I got curious about while I was fact-checking this segment, honestly.
AmaraUh-oh, I know that voice. That's your notebook voice.
OlaIt is. Because there's a historian who went digging back through the record, not the flashy 1926 Showdown, a much quieter paper published a few years later.
AmaraWait, quieter? Quieter did more damage than an entire symposium?
OlaThat's the claim. The New York fight is the one everyone remembers because it's loud and it's got a crowd. This historian says the real coup de grâce came later, and almost nobody was watching when it landed.
AmaraOkay, but does the Nature write-up say who exactly is doing the talking? Like, are these American geologists ganging up on him, or is it more evenly split with the Europeans?
OlaThe review covers American and European geologists in the room together, but it doesn't hand out a scorecard by nationality. What it makes clear is just how much correcting everybody in that room thought Wegener needed.
AmaraOkay, that's-- Hold on. I need the year. I need the paper. I need everything.
OlaNext.
AmaraUgh, you're doing the thing where you make me wait.
OlaI'm doing the thing where we cover it properly instead of rushing it in the last thirty seconds of this segment.
AmaraFine. Fine. But I'm holding you to it.
OlaDeal. So we set up 1926 as the big public beating. Loud room, packed symposium, Drift walks in and gets torn apart.
AmaraYeah, that's the story everybody tells.
OlaExcept a paper called American Intransigence digging back through the history of this whole fight says that's not actually the moment that killed it in America.
AmaraWait, seriously? The trial everybody points to wasn't the verdict?
OlaThat's the argument. The author says the real coup de grâce came six years later in 1932 in two articles in the GSA Bulletin.
AmaraGSA Bulletin. So not a conference stage, a journal.
OlaRight. One by a geologist named Willis, one by a geologist named Schuchert.
AmaraNo packed room, no audience gasping.
OlaNone of that. Just two papers sitting in print doing the damage slowly.
AmaraWait, but why would a journal citation carry more weight than a public symposium everyone was talking about at the time?
OlaBecause the symposium report gets read once and shelved, but a bulletin article becomes the thing every subsequent paper on the topic has to wrestle with. That's the argument anyway.
AmaraOkay. Walk me through why that would hit harder than a public symposium.
OlaBecause a symposium is a night out. People argue, they go home. Some of them forget half of what was said.
AmaraBut a journal article sits on a shelf.
OlaFor years. Every geologist writing a paper after that has to cite it, argue with it, or ignore it and look sloppy.
AmaraSo the 1926 crowd goes home and forgets half of what was argued, but the 1932 papers just sit there daring anyone to disagree in print.
OlaExactly. And disagreeing in print means putting your own name on the counterargument. That's a much higher bar than standing up in a ballroom and asking a pointed question.
AmaraSo it's not the loudest room, it's the last word in print.
OlaThat's the case the author's making, yeah.
AmaraI have to say, that's a little terrifying if you're a scientist. You can survive getting yelled at in New York.
OlaBut you don't survive a citation.
AmaraExactly. Nobody remembers the shouting match. Everybody remembers what got footnoted for the next thirty years.
OlaAnd that's the twist the episode's been building to. The public fight was the show. Willis and Schuchert were the paperwork that actually closed the case.
AmaraIt's kind of brutal when you think about it. Wegener never got a chance to respond to the thing that actually finished him off.
OlaRight. Because by 1932, the loud fight was already old news. Nobody was watching the quiet follow-up, including probably Wegener himself.
AmaraDo we know what their argument even was?
OlaThe source doesn't spell out the mechanics, just that the two Bulletin pieces are what the author credits with sealing it.
AmaraFair enough. I'm not going to invent their arguments for them.
OlaPlease don't.
AmaraSo Wegener gets buried twice, once in public, once on paper.
OlaAnd the second one's the one nobody threw a party for.
AmaraWhich is kind of the worst way to lose an argument, quietly in a journal most people never read.
OlaNo comeback tour after that. No rematch.
AmaraSo the fight didn't end there though, right? It just stopped happening in public?
OlaThat's exactly it. Drift doesn't die in the '30s. It goes quiet. Decades of geologists building careers on a fixed Earth while the actual argument just sits underground.
AmaraUntil plate tectonics comes along and drags the whole thing back into the light.
Speaker 3And that's where we're headed next. So Wegener had one claim. The continents used to be jammed together like puzzle pieces. Denver is not going to argue about that anymore.
AmaraNo way. That fight's over.
Speaker 3Right. The argument now is about which puzzle and how many times it's been assembled. Pangaea is the one everybody knows. That's the two-hundred-and-fifty-million-year-old jigsaw Wegener was actually staring at.
AmaraBut Rodinia is the one nobody outside a geology department has heard of.
Speaker 3Exactly. Older supercontinent, way messier reconstruction, different rocks, different magnetic data, way less agreement on where anything actually sat.
AmaraSo instead of did continents move, the panels are gonna be fighting over how many times did they do this exact dance?
Speaker 3That's the shift. Wegener needed one assembly and one breakup to explain what he saw. Modern tectonics says it's happened again and again. Supercontinents form, they split, they wander, they slam back together.
AmaraA cycle instead of a single event.
Speaker 3Right. And that's genuinely new ground for us. We've circled the Wilson cycle on this show for months and never actually sat down with it.
AmaraWe've mentioned it, what, three separate times and then bailed?
Speaker 3At least three. This is finally the excuse.
AmaraOkay, but how big is this program actually gonna be? Because Denver in October is not a small room.
Speaker 3It's not. GSA's own call for abstracts says submissions went out to almost two hundred specialized technical sessions.
AmaraTwo hundred sessions?
Speaker 3Close to it, yeah. And the deadline for getting an abstract in was August sixth. So whatever's on the docket now, it's already locked.
AmaraSo no last-minute additions, no surprise Wegener defenders sneaking onto the schedule in September.
Speaker 3None. Whatever fight is happening in Denver, the lineup for it was set back in August.
AmaraWhich is wild because that means the program committee already knew exactly which corner of the supercontinent debate they wanted on stage.
Speaker 3And given the centennial framing, I'd bet a chunk of those sessions are explicitly Wegener-adjacent, people using his original heresy as the hook, then presenting plate motion reconstructions that would have made zero sense to him in nineteen twelve.
AmaraReconstructions he never had the data for.
Speaker 3Never had the satellites, never had the magnetic striping, never had any of it. He had fossils and coastlines and a hunch.
AmaraAnd now there's a room full of people arguing about the exact timing of Rodinia's breakup using data he couldn't have imagined.
Speaker 3That's the gap we're chasing. A hundred years between a hunch and a cycle with a name.
AmaraOkay, I'm actually excited now, and I wasn't sure I would be about rock cycles.
Speaker 3High praise.
AmaraSo what's actually on the program? Because two hundred sessions doesn't tell me what people are going to be yelling about in the hallway.
Speaker 3That's the part worth digging into next. What Denver's actually putting in front of geoscientists this October. Okay.
AmaraSo I actually pulled up the program listing this morning.
Speaker 3And?
AmaraIt's a lot. Plenary keynote symposia, plus a stack of topical sessions you can browse right now on the GSA Connect site.
Speaker 3Wait, they've already posted the whole schedule?
AmaraBrowsable, yeah. Titles, session chairs, the works.
Speaker 3That's okay. That's more organized than I expected for something built around a hundred-year fight.
AmaraRight? You'd think centennial chaos, but no, it's very tidy.
Speaker 3So what jumps out? Anything with Wegener's name actually in the title?
AmaraA few from what I saw, but also a bunch that don't mention him at all and just go straight at Rodinia reconstructions or Wilson cycle timing.
Speaker 3Which tells you something, doesn't it? If half the sessions don't even bother naming him.
AmaraThe field's moved past the argument and into the mechanics.
Speaker 3That's my read too. He's the ancestor in the room, not the guest of honor.
AmaraHarsh.
Speaker 3Accurate though.
AmaraSo here's what I wanna know walking in. Do the historians and the working geochronologists actually talk to each other in these rooms? Or do they just share a program and ignore each other for four days?
Speaker 3That's the question I keep coming back to because a party keynote is a big stage. That's not a side session. That's the marquee slot.
AmaraWhich means somebody decided the centennial angle deserved the biggest room in the building.
Speaker 3Somebody at GSA, yeah.
AmaraSo what do we actually do with this? Just read the abstracts and guess?
Speaker 3No, I say we go.
AmaraWait, seriously?
Speaker 3I mean, sit in the sessions, both of us. Actually watch how the room argues this, not just what the program says it's about.
AmaraBecause a title on a page and a room full of geologists disagreeing are two very different things.
Speaker 3Exactly. And I want to know whether the centennial framing holds up once people are actually at the microphone or whether it collapses into the usual methods fights the second someone questions a date.
AmaraOoh, that's a good bet to make out loud before we know the answer.
Speaker 3I'm comfortable with it.
AmaraOkay, so we go, we sit in the party sessions, and we come back and report.
Speaker 3And the real test isn't whether Wegener gets vindicated. It's whether the field can actually tell its own history straight or whether it's still smoothing the story the way it always has.
AmaraThat's a heavier question than I expected from a conference schedule.

AmaraAnd it's not the loud laughing that kills him. It's Willis and Schuchert quietly writing him out of the journals two decades later, which is wild.
