What the episode covers

This week's UX and product design critique puts Apple's September 9 keynote under the microscope before it even happens, and the hosts have a spicy claim: their locked predictions matter less than whether they can actually grade their own confidence. It's the Tuesday episode for week 36 of 2026, and Maya and Grant revisit three bets made against this being Ternus's first solo keynote as CEO.

Listeners get a design critique of specific UI and hardware details, including the Dynamic Island shrink debate between the current cutout and a smaller under-display cutout, the animation space tradeoff for Live Activities and music controls, the foldable hinge's rumored crease depth and angle tolerances, and why Liquid Glass turned out to be WWDC-preview material rather than a confirmed reveal. Along the way, they debate leaker track record versus source count, and why an overly precise number can be riskier to bet on than a rounder claim.

  • How to separate confirmed product design details from leak-based speculation
  • Why precision in a rumor can increase, not decrease, your risk of being wrong
  • A gut-check question for weighting predictions: how many other things would have to be wrong too
  • Why source count matters more than confidence when grading your own calls

Listeners walk away with a practical framework for auditing their own UX and UI predictions before the reveal, not just after.

Quick answers

Straight from the episode

The questions this one settles, without the listen.

Why is Apple's September 9 event considered Craig Federighi... or rather Ternus's first keynote as CEO?
Outside coverage from AppleInsider, Forbes, and Macworld frames the September 9 event as the first keynote Ternus is fronting in his own right as CEO, with a Yahoo Finance piece adding that it's his chance to signal Apple's design direction going forward.
What are the three predictions the hosts locked in for the event?
The hosts locked in three bets: a shrink of the Dynamic Island, a foldable hinge with a measurable crease, and Liquid Glass appearing on that crease.
What's the evidence behind the Dynamic Island shrink rumor?
It comes from a MacRumors A/B test comparing the current cutout to a smaller under-display design, attributed to leaker Digital Chat Station, with a Threads thread attaching a 35% figure to the change. The hosts also noted a real shrink would cost animation space for Live Activities and music controls.
How specific are the rumored foldable hinge and crease numbers?
MacRumors-sourced rumors peg the crease depth at under 0.15mm and the angle at under 2.5 degrees, tied to a liquid metal hinge and structural glass mid-frame. Grant notes that such a razor-precise number is riskier to have quoted than a rounder claim, since even a small overshoot would read as a wrong call.
Is Liquid Glass confirmed for the September event?
No. The hosts conclude Liquid Glass is more likely WWDC-preview material rather than a confirmed September reveal, which is why it can't be placed in a 'confirmed' column alongside the other bets.
What's the episode's main takeaway for evaluating tech predictions?
Weight predictions by independent source count rather than personal confidence, and use the gut-check question 'if I'm wrong, how many other things have to be wrong too' to distinguish single-source misses from multi-source ones.

GrantOkay, so full disclosure, I've been dreading this recording all week.

MayaWhy? What'd you do?

GrantNothing. I just... I pulled up our locked scorecard from last episode, and it's sitting there like a bad trade I have to account for.

MayaA bad trade.

GrantI mean it. Dynamic Island, the foldable hinge, liquid glass. We called all of it before anybody had receipts.

MayaWell, now we've got receipts. September ninth, Wednesday. That's the date.

GrantLocked?

MayaLocked. Apple confirmed it themselves.

GrantOkay, so no more hedging on our end either.

MayaNone. And this is the show where I'm Maya, you're Grant. Welcome back to the pod where we grade Apple's UX decisions instead of just reacting to them.

GrantVery smooth.

MayaI practiced that one.

GrantI could tell.

MayaBut, okay, here's the actual hook before we get into the grading.

GrantGo.

MayaThis isn't just some random keynote we're auditing ourselves against.

GrantRight, right.

MayaThis is the first one that isn't run by the guy who's been running it forever.

GrantWait, are you saying what I think you're saying?

MayaI'm not saying it yet. I'm just saying new hands on the wheel, first big stage moment, and we already had our chips down before he even walked out.

GrantSo it's not just did we call the features right?

MayaNope.

GrantIt's whether the guy up there even plays the same game.

MayaExactly. And I've got thoughts on what his track record actually tells us.

GrantThen let's see how bad my trade really is. Okay, so context is set, new guy, big stage. But here's what actually caught my eye digging back through this.

MayaWhats that?

GrantAppleInsider straight up says this isn't just the iPhone 18 Pro reveal or the foldable launch. Theyre calling this Ternus' actual first event as CEO, full stop.

MayaRight. Like the phone stuff is almost the subplot.

GrantKind of, yeah. The headline's the guy, not the glass.

MayaThe guy, not the glass. I like that.

GrantDont get used to it. I don't usually rhyme.

MayaNoted. So did anybody else back that up, or is it just the one outlet running with the leadership angle?

GrantNo, it's corroborated. Forbes had their own write-up laying out the whole keynote schedule around it.

MayaAnd Macworld, sorry, Macworld had theirs too, just kind of confirming the shape of the day.

GrantRight. Nobody's disputing any of it. It's just most of that coverage is still logistics, time, schedule, what's launching.

MayaSure.

GrantThe piece that actually made me sit up was a totally separate one about what Ternus needs to do as CEO generally.

MayaOh, the Yahoo Finance thing.

GrantYeah, that one. It frames this keynote specifically as his shot to signal what Apple's design direction even looks like now that he's holding the pen.

MayaWhich is a real question. Like, does design at Apple change flavor under him, or does it stay exactly the same because the org chart underneath him hasn't moved?

GrantThat's the whole tension, yeah.

MayaLike, give me an actual example, not just the theory.

GrantSure. Look at how his teams have leaned into on-device engineering over showmanship. If that instinct carries on to the keynote stage, we might get fewer flashy transitions and more feature deep dives.

MayaWhich would be a real departure from how these keynotes have felt lately.

GrantRight. That's the bet embed in the whole framing.

MayaOkay. So before we go further, should we just pull up our three?

GrantLet's do it. We locked three bets on the last episode.

MayaDynamic Island shrinking down, the foldable hinge and whether they actually killed the crease.

GrantAnd Liquid Glass showing up on that same crease.

MayaThree bets, three separate ways we could be wrong.

GrantComforting?

MayaI mean, it's fine. That's the job. We said what we think happens, now we find out.

GrantAnd Ternus' fingerprints are supposedly all over at least one of those. That's what people are saying, yeah.

MayaOkay, so where do we even start with this?

GrantWe start with the one everybody's been screaming about since the leak dropped.

MayaThe island.

GrantThe Dynamic Island. That's the one where I feel the most exposed, honestly.

MayaGood. I like it when you're nervous.

GrantGreat. Thanks for that. Let's go. So walk me through the actual leak on this thing, because I remember there being two versions floating around.

MayaYeah. So this goes back to March. MacRumors ran a piece saying Apple was testing two options for the cutout on the 18 Pro.

GrantTwo options meaning what exactly?

MayaThe current pill shape, the one we've had since the 14 Pro, versus something a lot smaller using under display Face ID parts.

GrantRight. So no notch, no pill, just cameras hiding under the screen.

MayaThat's the idea. And the source on this was a leaker called Digital Chat Station, who framed it as an actual AB test inside Apple. Like, they hadn't picked a lane yet.

GrantWhich is a very different claim than it shrinks. That's it might not exist in its current form at all.

MayaRight.

GrantSo when we locked our bet, did we lock shrinks or did we lock it's gone?

MayaWe locked shrinks. Smaller Island, still visible.

GrantWhich is the safer of the two bets baked into one leak.

MayaExactly. And here's where the number got specific. There was a Threads, the tech informer account, that took the DCS claim and attached a figure to it, roughly thirty-five percent.

GrantThirty-five percent. That's not a vibe, that's a measurement someone's claiming to have.

MayaAnd the thread wasn't reporting anything new. It was just people arguing over that number, reacting to it, kind of piling predictions on top of it.

GrantSo the number didn't come from Apple, it didn't come from the original leaker even, it came from a community doing math on a rumor.

MayaWhich is exactly the chain we should have flagged before we locked it in.

GrantI mean, in fairness, one leaker with a decent track record saying A/B test is worth something.

MayaIs it worth locking a scorecard bet on though? That's the actual question.

GrantHonestly, probably not at that confidence level. I'd have wanted a second source before I called it.

MayaSee, I'm the opposite. DCS has been right enough times that I was comfortable riding one leaker on a hardware claim like this.

GrantThat's the split though. You're grading the source's history. I'm grading the number of independent confirmations. Neither of us checked which one actually matters more.

MayaFair. And full disclosure, I want to see if that Thirty-five percent holds up more than I want to admit.

GrantSame, honestly

MayaOkay, but think about what that actually means for someone using it day to day.

GrantRight. If it Shrink anywhere near Thirty-five percent, that's less room for the animations Apple usually crams in there, Live Activities, music controls, all of it.

MayaSo a Smaller Island isn't just a cosmetic win, it's an interaction trade-off too.

GrantExactly. And Neither leak even mentions that side of it.

MayaOkay. But the Island's the soft bet. The one with real numbers attached, Hinge specs, Crease depth, all of it, that's the Foldable.

GrantThat's the one I actually slept over.

MayaThen let's see how bad that bet looks. Okay, foldable. This is the one where the numbers get almost suspicious.

GrantSuspicious how?

MayaLike too precise. A MacRumors guide has the crease depth under zero point one five millimeters.

GrantThat's basically nothing. That's a hair's width.

MayaRight? And the crease angle, under two point five degrees.

GrantWho's measuring a screen crease to a tenth of a degree before the thing even exists?

MayaI know. I know. But that's the claim. Liquid metal hinge, plus a structural glass mid-frame, and that's supposedly how they get there.

GrantLiquid metal hinge I've heard before. The structural glass part is new to me.

MayaSame. It's in that same MacRumors rundown packaged together like it's one engineering story.

GrantWhich is the part that worries me a little.

MayaWhy?

GrantBecause a hinge material and a mid-frame material are two totally different manufacturing problems. Bundling them into one clean number makes it sound more solved than it probably is.

MayaOkay, but if true, that's a real fix. A crease you can't really feel changes how people actually use a fold.

GrantSure, if true.

MayaYou're doing the thing again.

GrantWhat thing?

MayaThe skeptical eyebrow thing. Where is this coming from? Who tested a hinge that doesn't exist yet?

GrantThat's exactly my question. Nobodys cutting one open with calipers. This is a spec sheet for a product that hasnt shipped.

MayaFair, but we locked it in anyway. Same as the Dynamic Island bet.

GrantWe did. And honestly, this ones got even less room for error because if the crease is bigger than two point five degrees, everybodys going to feel it and call us out for it.

MayaHarsh, but true.

GrantIm not saying its wrong. Im saying two decimal places of confidence on a fold that isnt in anyones hands yet is a specific kind of trap.

MayaThe trap being...?

GrantThe trap being a number that precise feels like fact even when its one writeup compiling rumors.

MayaGive me a real world version of that trap, though.

GrantSure. Say the actual crease ends up at three degrees instead of two point five. Most people testing it would still call that basically flat in casual use. But because we quoted a specific number, we'd be graded as wrong even if the design win is basically the same.

MayaSo the precision could actually hurt us more than a vaguer claim would have.

GrantExactly. A rounder claim would have aged better than a razor sharp one that turns out to be slightly off.

MayaWhich, to be fair, is what we've been doing this whole Scorecard.

GrantRight. And that's actually bugging me now that you say that.

MayaBugging you how?

GrantBefore we grade this one, I wanna know what Apple's actually confirmed on stage versus what's still just floating around as a leak.

MayaWait... You mean go back through all three bets?

GrantNot relitigate them, just check the label. Is this a keynote fact or pre-keynote guess dressed up as one?

MayaBecause if I'm honest, I couldn't tell you right now which bucket the Crease numbers land in.

GrantThat's kind of my point.

MayaOkay, so before we score Liquid Glass, we sort that out first.

GrantYeah. Confirmed column, leak column. Let's see how many of our locks actually belong in the first one. So okay, we sort them. Where does Liquid Glass land?

MayaThat's the one I actually feel decent about because that wasn't a leak. Apple showed it themselves back at WWDC.

GrantRight. Months before any of the September stuff even got scheduled.

MayaExactly. MacRumors covered the actual session. Apple's improving how the material spreads light across content, so text sitting behind the glass reads cleaner instead of smearing.

GrantSo wait, so this actually helps with readability?

MayaYeah. They also darkened the edges of the glass panels and pushed the specular highlights brighter so there's more contrast where your eye actually needs to grab an edge.

GrantAnd didn't they bury a toggle in there too?

MayaA transparency slider in Settings. So if you hate the whole see-through aesthetic, you can just dial it back.

GrantOkay, I'll take that one. Confirmed column. Except...

MayaExcept what?

GrantExcept WWDC isn't the keynote we're grading. It's still a preview. We locked in Liquid Glass showing up on the folded crease as a bet for September, and all we've actually confirmed is software, not how it looks on real hardware.

MayaOh. Oh, no.

GrantYeah.

MayaSo the crease specs are a leak, the Dynamic Island thing is a leak, and the one bet we thought was locked down is also technically a leak, just an earlier one.

GrantA preview instead of a leak, but same bucket. None of it is the actual keynote.

MayaWow. So there's no confirmed column.

GrantThere's no confirmed column. It's all leaks all the way down.

MayaThat's... Okay, that's actually kind of funny in a bad way.

GrantIt's not funny. It's the whole point of doing this exercise.

MayaSo what's the actual takeaway then? We can't fail a test that hasn't happened.

GrantNo, but we can look at how much confidence we assigned each bet versus how much confirmation we actually had backing it. That's two separate numbers we've been treating like one.

MayaYeah, like Liquid Glass felt locked to us because Apple's own team said it out loud on a stage, but it's still a stage from June, not September.

GrantRight. And the crease specs felt locked because the numbers were so specific, not because anybody at Apple said a word about them.

MayaWhich is a totally different kind of confidence, and we scored them the same.

GrantExactly. Specificity isn't the same thing as sourcing.

MayaOkay, that's, that's actually a real problem with how we do this show, not just this episode.

GrantFair. So what do we actually have going into the ninth?

MayaWe have a guy running his first big show.

GrantRemember that Yahoo Finance piece we brought up earlier? The one about Ternus taking over. Same point stands. This is still his one shot to signal Apple's design direction now that he's holding the reins.

MayaSo depending how he plays it, this could look like a totally different keynote style going forward.

GrantCould. Or he plays it exactly like his predecessor, and nothing about the format changes at all.

MayaWhich we won't know until we're actually watching him walk out.

GrantRight. That's the one bet on the table we haven't locked in either direction.

MayaWhich, honestly, is more interesting than any spec.

GrantIt's leadership, a completely different question.

MayaAnd we don't get to answer that yet. That's still open until he actually walks on stage.

GrantIt's the only one of the three that isn't already spinned by a leaker somewhere.

MayaOkay, so if we can't grade the actual reveal because none of it's happened yet-

GrantThen we grade the process. How we called it, not what gets called.

MayaFine by me. Let's see how our own homework looks.

GrantSo where does that leave us, honestly? Two Threads, neither one closed.

MayaRight. Did the bets hold up, and does Ternus actually change how Apple designs stuff?

GrantAnd we can't score either one tonight.

MayaNope, not until September ninth actually happens.

GrantWhich means the thing we can grade right now isn't Apple, it's us.

MayaOoh, that's rough.

GrantI know, I know. But think about it. Every number we quoted tonight, we quoted with the same tone, same certainty in our voice.

MayaEven though some of it was one leaker, and some of it was three sources lining up.

GrantExactly. We didn't sound less sure about the shakier stuff. We just didn't check ourselves.

MayaThat's the actual audit then, not whether the crease is real, whether we noticed how thin the ice was under each claim before we opened our mouths.

GrantYeah. And look, I'll own it. I was more confident about the hinge numbers than I had any right to be.

MayaBecause they were specific.

GrantBecause they were specific, which is exactly backwards. Specific doesn't mean solid.

MayaSo what do we actually do differently?

GrantCount the sources. Before you get excited about a number, ask how many separate people are saying it, not how good it sounds.

MayaOne leaker, weight it low. Three leakers agreeing independently, weight it higher. Doesn't matter how confident any one of them sounds.

GrantRight. Confidence in the delivery tells you nothing about whether it's true.

MayaGive me one gut check question we could have asked ourselves in the moment.

GrantEasy. If I'm wrong about this, how many other things have to be wrong too? One leaker being off just means one guess was off. Three sources agreeing and being off means something bigger broke down.

MayaThat's actually usable.

GrantI'll steal that one for myself before I even open social media next time.

MayaThat's basically the whole scorecard problem in one sentence.

GrantIt is, and it's on us going forward every single leak season.

MayaSo next keynote, we're not grading Apple first. We're grading our own notes first.

GrantPull the sourcing apart before we even talk about the feature. How many names? How independent are they? Does the confident one actually have the most backing or just the loudest post?

MayaI like that. It's not glamorous, but it'll save us from another situation like tonight where we look up and go, "Wait, none of this was confirmed."

GrantYeah. Let's not do that again.

MayaSo that's the steal for anyone listening who makes calls on thin information, whether it's product leaks or anything else. Count your sources before you trust your gut.

GrantWeight the claim by how many independent people are actually saying it, not by how good it sounds coming out of your mouth.

MayaSays the guy who was very confident about hinge angles an hour ago.

GrantGuilty. All right, I think that's the note to end on.

MayaI'll take it from here for the close.

GrantAll yours. So if you're keeping score at home, here's the one thing to actually take with you.

MayaCount your sources before you trust your gut.

GrantThat's it. One leaker feeling right isn't the same as three leakers agreeing.

MayaEven when the one leaker gives you a decimal point.

GrantEspecially then.

MayaYeah. Okay, so before I forget, this is where you come in.

GrantOur favorite part. Find a screen this week that bugs you. Doesn't have to be Apple.

MayaCould be your banking app, your thermostat, whatever's annoying you today.

GrantScreenshot it, tag us, tell us what's wrong with it. We'll actually look. We read those.

MayaWe do. And if you want more of this every week?

GrantIf you got thirty seconds, leave us a review.

MayaIt genuinely helps people find the show.

GrantAlso, it helps my ego, but that's secondary.

MayaSecondary? Sure.

GrantFine. Tertiary.

MayaBut seriously, the comments help us pick what to audit next, so it's not just us in an echo chamber.

GrantYeah. If you want a specific app roasted, tell us. We keep a running list.

MayaHonestly, though, I think the reason I keep doing this show is exactly what happened today. We built this whole scorecard, felt so sure of it, and then had it turn around and grade ourselves instead.

GrantThat's the part nobody tells you going in. The product's the easy thing to argue about. Your own certainty is the hard thing to look at.

MayaYeah. Well, until next time, keep Screenshot the stuff that Bugging you.

GrantAnd keep your Confidence honest.
