GrantAll right, and welcome back to UX Autopsy. I'm Grant.

MayaAnd I'm Maya. And Grant, I've had four coffees because there is so much Apple news this week.

GrantYeah, MacRumors and a few other outlets are circling a September event for the iPhone 18 Pro and the Ultra.

MayaWhich, fine, we'll poke at the calendar stuff briefly, but the real meat today is design.

GrantRight. First up, that smaller Dynamic Island on the 18 Pro.

MayaI think it's a straight up downgrade to the tap target and the whole Live Activity canvas.

GrantHmm. And I'll tell you why Apple might actually be right to make that trade.

MayaHere we go.

GrantAnd then there's the transparency slider in iOS 17. Accessibility fix or Apple just punting a decision to the user?

MayaOoh, that one's got teeth. And after that, the foldable.

GrantThe crease-free display claim? I wanna see it before I believe it.

MayaAnd that Touch ID power button rewriting how you unlock and lay out apps, we split on that one too.

GrantThen we rip through six quick verdicts. Dark Cherry, split screen, a two thousand dollar price tag.

MayaAnd whether Apple should even announce a foldable before it ships. Grant and I are nowhere near agreement there.

GrantAnd we close out with predictions we're actually willing to be wrong about.

MayaDated, specific, on the record. No wiggle room.

GrantSo Maya, where do you wanna start? The stakes or straight into the island?

MayaLet's set the stakes first. What's actually riding on this launch? Okay, small changes first before the phone that actually bends.

GrantRight. The appetizer course.

MayaSo MacRumors reported this week that the 18 Pro keeps the 17 Pro body, just with a smaller Dynamic Island.

GrantSame shell, shrunk pill.

MayaAnd that's not just cosmetic. Shrink the pill and you shrink the tap target and the Live Activity canvas at the same time.

GrantWalk me through where this actually breaks something in real use.

MayaBoarding pass Live Activity. Gate, seat, boarding time. That string is already tight at the current size.

GrantMm-hmm.

MayaShrink the canvas and something gets cut.

GrantOr it just collapses to a bare icon.

MayaWhich is worse. Same story with rideshare ETAs. Four M turns into a dot, and Apple's never published a real spec for collapsed versus expanded states, so app teams are guessing at pixel budgets.

GrantSure, but flip it. That pill's sitting at the top of every single app all day, every day.

MayaI know, I know.

GrantThat's not nothing, though. Less screen occlusion up there, cleaner status bar spacing, more room for the actual content underneath.

MayaLong-press to expand is still invisible, though. No shape change, no shimmer. Nothing tells you the gesture exists.

GrantFair. That's a real gap. But I'd bet the smaller pill buys Apple a chip story. A20 Pro on a new two nanometer process per MacRumors. Battery life they sell on stage instead of another shape change.

MayaTrading discoverability for a spec sheet line.

GrantTrading it for real battery gains, though.

MayaSpeaking of trade-offs Apple's making for people, Tom's Guide is reporting iOS twenty-seven keeps Liquid Glass but adds a continuous transparency slider replacing the old Clear and Tinted presets.

GrantWait, an actual slider? Not just two toggles?

MayaYeah, and it reads like an accessibility fix. People who need more contrast finally get a dial for it.

GrantThat's a genuine fix. The contrast complaints have been the loudest signal since Liquid Glass dropped.

MayaMaybe it's Apple handing you the decision it didn't want to make for the default.

GrantMm. I don't buy that. Something that actually solves a legibility complaint, that's a fix, full stop.

MayaWe are not landing on the same page for that one.

GrantNope.

MayaAll right. Small pill, small slider. Now let's talk about a screen that folds in half.

GrantYeah. Stakes just went way up. Forget the pill for a second. The real test this year is the fold.

MayaFinally. My favorite. Hit me with the geometry.

GrantMacRumors foldable guide puts it around a five point five inch outer screen, seven point eight inches unfolded, something like four point five millimeters open and nine point five folded. Titanium frame, liquid metal hinge from suppliers like Bright Laser Technologies.

MayaThat hinge supplier name is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

GrantRight, because nobody outside a factory in Shenzhen has actually touched one.

MayaStill, four point five millimeters open is thin. Thinner than most single screen phones people carry now.

GrantIf it's real. Kuo and a couple other leakers claim Samsung Display built a crease-free panel-

Grant... and showed it off for maybe ten seconds at CES twenty twenty-six.

MayaI remember that clip going around.

GrantOne report in February claimed any leftover crease sits at a quarter the depth of the Galaxy Z Fold seven. Quarter the depth measured how? By whom?

MayaOkay, fair.

GrantThat's a seller describing service history nobody can actually pull up. I want someone tilting this thing under a lamp before I believe a word of it.

MayaBut if Apple ships this as the headline feature, they know reviewers angle it under a light on day one. Hard to fake that.

GrantThey can absolutely ship reduced, call it solved, and let the marketing copy carry it.

MayaFine. Reduced is still progress.

GrantReduced isn't the promise, and the reports say this drops Face ID for a Touch ID button built into the power key.

MayaWait, that rewrites every unlock moment.

GrantEvery one. PayPal, password autofill, unlocking an app, all passive with Face ID right now. Now a thumb has to find a button.

MayaAnd that button probably sits in a different spot folded versus unfolded.

GrantThat's my exact problem. Unfolded, your thumb's reaching across a seven point eight inch canvas to a side rail.

MayaTouch ID under glass still has upside, though. Works with a mask on, works in the dark, no relearning your angle mid-fold.

GrantI'll take that one.

MayaThank you.

GrantNow, stack that with what Gadget Hacks and Gurman's reporting for iOS twenty-seven, split screen apps, and iPad style layouts on the unfolded screen, but not full iPad multitasking.

MayaHalf a canvas, no clear rules yet.

GrantSo what happens to a keyboard that's supposed to sit above the fold line when you rotate mid-type? What happens to scroll position if you unfold in the middle of an article?

MayaNobody's answered that. TechRepublic's piece on iOS twenty-seven talks up the AI push and foldable support, but says nothing about state across the hinge.

GrantA modal centered on the crease is close to unusable too. You're stacking a dialog on the worst viewing angle on the whole device.

MayaThat one I don't have a comeback for.

GrantFirst time all episode.

MayaDon't get used to it. All right, enough circling. Let's fire through the individual calls.

GrantAll right.

MayaOkay, quick pivot. Rapid fire, six calls, one line each, flag or no flag.

GrantHit me.

MayaDark Cherry as the hero color.

GrantGreen flag. Apple needs a color that doesn't scream leftover chip year.

MayaFair enough. Touch ID power button.

GrantGreen flag. Cheaper than sub-display Face ID, and it works with gloves on.

MayaRed flag for me. A thumbprint sensor right on a hinge is a smudge magnet.

GrantSplit screen without full multitasking.

MayaRed flag. Half a feature reads like a bug report waiting to happen.

GrantLiquid glass transparency slider.

MayaGreen flag, easy one. User control beats a forced default.

GrantThe two thousand dollar price with tight supply.

MayaRed flag. That's not pricing. That's rationing with a price tag.

GrantWait, I'm green on that one. Scarcity puts early units in reviewer hands who will actually stress the hinge.

MayaWe are not agreeing on that.

GrantNope. Last one. Announcing the foldable without shipping it.

MayaRed flag. Ternus would be announcing a promise, not a product.

GrantGreen flag for me. MacRumors reported Thursday that Apple's lining up five new devices for this event.

MayaMm-hmm.

GrantOne more slide costs nothing.

MayaCosts nothing until the review embargo hits, and there's no unit to actually test.

GrantSix calls, three splits. Not bad for a keynote nobody's even scheduled yet.

MayaSpeaking of which, let's put dates on paper next.

GrantNobody's sent an invite yet, and that's the whole pressure point right now.

MayaRight. So let's lock some actual dates before we run out of tape.

Grant9to5Mac tracked Apple's last four years, and the invite drops two weeks before the show every single time.

MayaMm-hmm. And MacRumors pointed out Labor Day lands on September seventh this year, same calendar spot as twenty fifteen.

GrantTwenty fifteen, Apple announced on a Wednesday, September ninth. My prediction, invite lands the week of August twenty-fourth, event on the eighth or ninth.

MayaI'll take that window, but I'm calling September ninth specifically, a Wednesday, no later.

GrantSecond one, does the foldable actually ship in September, or does Apple just announce it and make us wait?

MayaAnnounce now, ship later. No foldable units in September boxes. Spring at the earliest.

GrantI'll go further. No foldable stage time at all in September. It gets pushed into its own spring event.

MayaOoh, that's a bigger swing than mine.

GrantThird one, the one that actually settles our crease argument from earlier.

MayaDoes Apple show a crease on camera, live, under stage lights?

GrantI say no. Panels shown flat, off axis, B-roll only. No live fold and hold shot.

MayaI'm saying they do show it folding briefly, because if they don't, nobody believes the crease-free claim anyway.

GrantSplit again. Good. That means it's testable.

MayaSpeaking of the Keynote, if John Ternus is the one running point instead of the usual lifestyle pitch...

GrantYou get engineering language, hinge cycles, tolerances, actual failure states up on screen.

MayaWhich I want. Show me the mechanism under stress, cycles and wear on camera.

GrantGrade the demo, not the render. That's basically the whole test for me this cycle.

MayaYeah, that's your line. I know it well.

GrantA render can't fail. A demo can. If all they show are renders, that probably isn't ready.

MayaAnd when we're wrong, we say it out loud instead of quietly moving on.

GrantExactly. I'll put it on the calendar. Post Keynote Audit right after the invite drops.

MayaSo here's what you can steal for your own work, whatever you're building.

GrantBefore your next design review or launch, write down three predictions you could lose, specific, Dated, checkable.

MayaSomething like, "This'll probably test well," is just a hope dressed up as a prediction.

GrantRight. A prediction you can't lose isn't a prediction at all. Put a number or date on it.

MayaThen after the review, grade yourself against what you actually wrote down, not your memory of it.

GrantWe'll run this exact Audit the moment Apple sends that invite.
