Three Casts, One Reveal: HBO's Riddle

DavidFine, yes. The Ginny search is over. Months of us guessing, done.

Becca HartwellFinally. That storyline gets to close today.

DavidAnd there's a second name in there that's a total charmer, plus a third pick that's honestly the biggest swing of the day.

Becca HartwellOoh, don't you dare spoil that third one yet.

DavidWouldn't dream of it, but trust me, it changes how we think about this whole series.

Becca HartwellAll right, so where do we even start?

DavidWhere else? The Ginny Weasley, the recast heard around the fandom. Bonnie Hill, that's the name. Ginny Weasley officially after Gracie Cochrane exited the role back in spring.

Becca HartwellWhich means we can finally close the file we've been keeping open since May.

DavidWe've basically been running a stakeout on this casting.

Becca HartwellVariety broke it first. Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as young Tom Riddle, and Hill slotting into Ginny for Chamber of Secrets Season 2.

DavidThree names in one release, and somehow everybody only wanted to talk about one of them.

Becca HartwellFair, honestly. Bonnie Wright's Ginny was quiet, sidelined early on, and then by the last films, she's throwing hexes right next to everybody else.

DavidThe arc mattered. Book Ginny in Chamber of Secrets is barely speaking. She's twelve. She's scared. She's writing in a diary that's slowly killing her.

Becca HartwellSo the casting call was never about charisma first. It was about who can play scared and small before anything else.

DavidAnd then grow into the version everyone remembers from the movies.

Becca HartwellDoes Hill read that way to you off what's out there? I think so. We've said before we wanted someone who doesn't play the whole arc on day one, and she isn't.

DavidNo overacting the confidence.

Becca HartwellRight. She looks twelve. She acts twelve.

DavidHigh praise coming from you.

Becca HartwellIt genuinely is.

DavidOkay, but I wanna push on this a little more because "looks twelve, acts twelve" is a vibe, not a scene.

Becca HartwellFair. Give me an actual moment you're picturing.

DavidThe flying car arrival at the Burrow. Book Ginny barely says a word to Harry that whole chapter. She's mortified. She can't even look at him.

Becca HartwellRight. And that's such an easy beat to get wrong. Cast the wrong kid, and she's either playing it too big, mugging for the camera, or she's so flat it just reads as boring instead of embarrassed.

DavidExactly. That scene lives or dies on restraint.

Becca HartwellAnd restraint is a hard thing to judge from a casting announcement and a couple of stills. We're grading a performance we haven't seen yet.

DavidSure, but that's kinda the fun of this job. We take the swing anyway.

Becca HartwellWe do. And based on what little we've got, I still think Hill is the right type for that scene specifically.

DavidThe shy, mortified version.

Becca HartwellRight. Wright eventually got to be confident, funny, holding her own with the twins, but that's a Season 2, Season 3 Ginny. Day one has to be the kid who can't speak in front of Harry Potter.

DavidSo if Hill nails the mortified version first, the growth arc takes care of itself later.

Becca HartwellThat's the bet, yeah.

DavidThere's a second scene I keep coming back to too, the Chamber rescue near the end where Ginny's basically unconscious the whole time. That's a totally different acting challenge. All reaction, no lines.

Becca HartwellRight. That one's almost the opposite test. Can she sell being drained and terrified without saying a word?

DavidPhysical acting only.

Becca HartwellExactly. And we won't know that until we actually see footage.

DavidCochrane's exit is still the part nobody's really explained.

Becca HartwellNo.

DavidAnd I doubt tonight's the night we get the full story either.

Becca HartwellProbably not.

DavidBut that gap is a huge part of why this search stretched on as long as it did.

Becca HartwellMonths of it, not days.

DavidThere's an actual reason for that timeline, and it's bigger than one casting director changing their mind.

Becca HartwellAnd you could feel the fan community getting restless about it too. Every casting site update, every set photo without a Ginny in frame, people were reading tea leaves.

DavidWe were basically reporting on the absence of news for a full season of episodes.

DavidThe second name on that announcement is Lenny Rush, and he's playing Dobby.

Becca HartwellWait, Lenny Rush? That's a genuinely exciting get.

DavidRight? Variety's report on the casting folded him in with Ginny and Riddle like it was one clean package deal.

Becca HartwellWhich structurally it was. Same day, same press release.

DavidBut here's the actor swap that's actually interesting to me.

Becca HartwellToby Jones.

DavidToby Jones, who was in his mid-30s when he voiced Dobby, and Dobby was fully CGI, top to bottom.

Becca HartwellA grown man's voice coming out of a computer-generated house elf.

DavidAnd now you've got a kid actor actually attached to the role.

Becca HartwellSo the question is obvious: Is Lenny Rush's face going to be on screen at all?

DavidDeadline's exclusive on this didn't say. HBO hasn't confirmed whether Rush's Dobby is CGI, motion capture, or prosthetics.

DavidNothing, which is wild because that decision changes the entire performance.

Becca HartwellIt does. If it's mo-cap, you get his actual physicality driving the character.

DavidIf it's prosthetics, you get his face, his eyes reacting in real time.

Becca HartwellAnd if it's straight CGI, like the films-

DavidThen casting an actual kid barely matters beyond the voice booth.

Becca HartwellWhich feels like a waste of Lenny Rush, honestly. He's got a face that does half the acting for him.

DavidI'd take practical over CGI here every time. Give me a real elf on set reacting to real light.

Becca HartwellI'm not so sure. The films leaned CGI because Dobby does things a human body can't do, the ears, the dissiprating, snapping his fingers and vanishing.

DavidSure, but Andy Serkis basically proved mo-cap can carry all of that and still feel human.

Becca HartwellGollum wasn't hopping around a kitchen serving butterbeer, though.

Becca HartwellThink about the actual demands of the role. Dobby has to iron his own ears at one point and slam his head in a door as punishment. That's brutal slapstick.

DavidWhich a prosthetic suit could probably sell fine, honestly. Puppetry and practical effects handled way weirder body stuff long before CGI got good.

Becca HartwellSure, but Dobby's proportions are so exaggerated, the huge eyes, the tiny body. Get that wrong practically and it reads as a costume instead of a character.

DavidWhereas CGI just adjusts the proportions digitally, no compromise required.

Becca HartwellRight. That's genuinely the trade-off, precision versus presence.

DavidI'll take presence. Give me an actor a scene partner can actually react to on the day.

Becca HartwellI hear you. I just don't think it's as simple as practical good, CGI bad here.

DavidMaybe it comes down to how much they trust a kid actor to carry a scene without the safety net of a suit or a render.

Becca HartwellSo we're stuck. No confirmation, no format, just a name.

DavidWhich is honestly fine. It's one to watch, not one to solve tonight.

DavidYounger Riddle reads more like a kid who fooled everybody. Older Riddle reads like a kid who already knew he'd fool everybody.

Becca HartwellSame guy, worse intentions either way.

DavidAnd it changes how the reveal lands. A 16-year-old prefect getting away with murder is scarier than a 23-year-old doing it.

Becca HartwellBecause a 16-year-old shouldn't be that good at lying yet.

DavidExactly, and he already is.

Becca HartwellOkay, so walk me through the actual arc, because I always forget how much of this is just a book talking.

DavidCollider frames the whole thing around the diary. Riddle's a memory trapped in a book working Ginny from the inside, and before Barratt, that role belonged to three actors, Coulson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Frank Dillane.

Becca HartwellThree, and somehow none of them are the version everybody actually pictures.

DavidBecause none of them are actually Voldemort, not yet.

Becca HartwellRight. Flashback stuff, memory stuff, never the real thing.

DavidThe film split the guy across three phases and never once cast the adult.

Becca HartwellEvery version before him got backup, a grown Voldemort somewhere in the same movie doing the heavy lifting.

DavidHere, he's on his own for the whole season.

Becca HartwellWhich is wild when you think about how central he is to eight movies.

DavidWhich is the part that got me. Barratt is the first actor this show has ever cast as any version of the Dark Lord.

DavidResponsible Child, yeah. Real heavy drama, not some franchise warmup.

DavidTwo swings, both landed, both right before HBO calls.

DavidCompletely different. Those two are reacting to a story happening around them.

DavidAnd then get this, if Riddle's finally cast, there's a much bigger question sitting right behind him.

Becca HartwellThe grown one, the one wearing the face everybody actually thinks of when you say Voldemort.

DavidNobody's announced him yet.

DavidOkay, so Riddle's on the board, which means there's one name still missing from this whole puzzle.

DavidAnd listeners are already speculating way past Riddle. There's a YouTube video going around titled Eva Green as Bellatrix, and the comments are full of people treating it like it's basically confirmed.

Becca HartwellIs it confirmed?

DavidNo, it's a rumor video. Nobody official has said a word.

Becca HartwellBut it's telling, right? The second one casting drops, fans start building the whole cast list in their heads.

DavidExactly. Bellatrix isn't even in this book. People are just hungry.

Becca HartwellAnd it's not the only thing floating around before this announcement even landed. There's a post from a fan account, The Daily Potter, that went up saying Chamber of Secrets casting was expected that day, and it specifically named Moaning Myrtle as one of the unannounced roles.

DavidSo they basically called the day right.

Becca HartwellCalled the day, missed the names. Nobody had Riddle, Dobby, or the new Ginny actress in their post.

DavidWhich tells you the leak network around the show is decent, but not that decent.

Becca HartwellI think they hold him back. You don't reveal your main villain's adult face the same year you just introduced the teenage version.

DavidI disagree a little. I think they want him locked in early so the marketing has something to build toward.

Becca HartwellCould be both. Cast quietly, announce loud.

DavidCan I float a wishlist name? Purely speculative, no source behind it.

Becca HartwellPlease, go for it.

DavidSomeone who can do quiet menace without leaning on prosthetics the whole time. I keep thinking about actors who've done stage villains, someone who can hold a room with just a voice.

Becca HartwellSee, that's exactly the stage-trained instinct I keep coming back to too. The nose and the robes are gonna do a lot of the visual work already, so the performance underneath needs to carry the rest.

DavidRight. You don't want someone who just disappears under the makeup.

Becca HartwellAnd there's a version of this where they cast someone completely unexpected, the way Barratt was to us today.
