MayaThat's wild, right? And then France confirms its first Ebola case, a doctor back from DR Congo. The patient's in isolation, but still.

DavidA lot going on globally, but we've also got some Washington drama that's, let's say, eyebrow-raising.

MayaThat's one word for it. Frank Carone, longtime Eric Adams associate. Yet arrested in a bribery scheme, and Kash Patel's girlfriend is pushing back on nepotism claims over a Trump event booking.

DavidHmm. And we close out with NASA's Perseverance rover turning up something interesting on Mars, organic carbon in the rocks. Scientists are being careful about what it means, but exactly.

MayaIt's hard not to get a little curious.

DavidAll right, let's start with the big picture.

MayaSo Trump walks into a closed door meeting with Senate Republicans yesterday and by all accounts, it does not go well.

DavidThat's putting it gently.

MayaAP News reported he was berating senators over Tuesday's vote, the one where the Senate moved to block U.S. military action in Iran, and Trump was furious.

DavidWhich, okay, I get why he's frustrated, but here's what's interesting to me. This wasn't Democrats pulling the brake. These were Republican senators.

MayaRight. And Reuters had a piece on the shouting match specifically. One Republican senator going toe-to-toe with the president. Loud.

DavidSo what does that tell you? Because I'd push back on the framing that this is just chaos or rebellion. Some of these senators have real concerns about the scope of executive war authority. That's a legitimate debate.

MayaTotally. And look, Iran's skepticism inside the GOP isn't new. There's a wing of the party that's always been cautious about military commitments abroad. This vote kind of crystallized that tension.

DavidAnd the timing is rough. AP noted that all this infighting has basically stalled other Senate business. The proof of citizenship voting bill, other agenda items, everything's on hold while they fight over this.

MayaWhich is not great when you're trying to get things done before midterms.

DavidNo. And Rubio's been doing cleanup duty. Reuters reported he met with Gulf Arab partners this week to reassure them that any Iran deal protects their security interests. So there's a whole diplomatic layer running parallel to this internal brawl.

DavidYeah, this one I want to look at. Reuters reported that the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany issued a joint statement raising alarm about Chinese military patrols off the eastern coast of Taiwan.

DavidIt's a signal, and what caught my attention, China's newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, sailed through the Taiwan Strait during military drills around the same time. Time. AP News covered that.

MayaWait, the Fujian? That's their most advanced carrier.

DavidExactly. So you've got the carrier transit, the patrols, and now four Western allies jointly pushing back. The concern specifically is China asserting authority over foreign ships near Taiwan, basically claiming the right to stop or control maritime traffic.

MayaWhich is a major deal for global shipping.

DavidMassive. And it's not fear-mongering to say this is worth watching closely. The question is whether this stays at the level of diplomatic statements or whether it escalates.

MayaAnd nobody has a great answer to that right now.

DavidNo, nobody does.

MayaAll right, shifting gears, and I want to be measured here because this is serious. France confirmed its first Ebola case. Al Jazeera reported it today. A doctor who had returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DavidOne case, but Ebola gets everyone's attention fast.

MayaThe patient is in isolation. Al Jazeera said strict. Strict biosafety protocols are in place. French health officials are clearly not taking chances.

DavidAnd they shouldn't. The DRC has been dealing with an active outbreak, so a case showing up in a returning medical worker? That's exactly the scenario public health systems are designed to catch early.

MayaSo far contained, but it's the kind of story where you check back in a few days.

MayaWhich... Speaking of who's playing it straight in Washington. Shifting gears a bit from Senate hallways to city halls, The New York Times is reporting that Frank Carone, a longtime Eric Adams associate, was arrested in a bribery scheme.

DavidYeah, and if you've been following the Adams story, this lands on an already pretty crowded pile. Carone was a senior advisor, former chief of staff, not a peripheral guy.

MayaRight. So it's not like someone in the mailroom got caught. This is inner circle.

DavidThe mailroom would have been better news for Adams.

MayaRight. Right. I mean. At some point, you have to wonder, how long before the whole circle just collapses under its own weight?

DavidFollow the money. That's basically what federal prosecutors do, and apparently there's a lot of trail to follow around this administration.

MayaOkay, and then there's this other story that I have mixed feelings about.

DavidUh-oh.

MayaSo Kash Patel is the FBI director, right? And his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, got a slot at one of Trump's Freedom 250 events, the great... Great American State Fair lineup.

DavidAnd people are saying, you know, nepotism, favoritism, you know, she didn't earn it.

MayaShe's pushing back hard. The Cut reported she's saying she earned the booking on her own merits, and she's done letting critics, quote, diminish her career.

DavidI mean, look, proving a negative is tough. If she's a working performer with actual bookings, the argument that she got this one solely because of who she dates, That's hard to prove definitively.

MayaBut the optics aren't nothing, David. When your boyfriend runs the FBI and and you show up at a presidential event, people are going to talk.

DavidSure, and they should, honestly. Scrutiny is fair. It's a public event with the president's name on it. That connection matters regardless of merit.

MayaThat's where I land. Ask the questions, let her answer, but don't just churn it off.

DavidAgreed. Accountability goes...

MayaGoes both directions.

DavidAnd then Bob Iger.

MayaOh, this one's interesting.

DavidSo Variety reported that the recently retired Disney CEO is standing by the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel over comments Kimmel made after the Charlie Kirk assassination attempt. And Iger called the comments directly bad taste.

MayaWhich is candid. You don't often get a media exec saying that plainly about one of their own stars.

DavidTotally. And look, Kimmel's a grown adult. If your boss calls your comments... Bad taste publicly after you've already been suspended? That's a pretty clear message.

MayaIt's also notable that Iger said it wasn't politically motivated. He's drawing a line between the content of the comments and ideology.

DavidWhether you believe that line is another question. But the fact that he said it out loud rather than staying vague, that stood out to me.

MayaStandards exist for a reason, even in late night.

DavidOkay, speaking of things that are genuinely hard to explain. Explain, NASA found something on Mars, and also there's a Giraffe loose in Texas.

DavidI know, let's go there. Okay, Shifting gears completely, NASA's Perseverance rover. You saw this?

MayaThe carbon thing, yeah.

DavidThe carbon thing. So Space.com reported that Perseverance found complex organic carbon in Martian rocks, like hundreds of detections in just two mudstone samples. That's wild, right?

MayaIt is. And I want to be the voice of reason here for a second. Complex carbon is not the same as we found alien. Aliens.

DavidNobody said aliens, David.

MayaNobody said it yet, but the question everyone's actually asking is whether this carbon came from living things or from chemistry. Those are very different answers.

DavidRight, right. So what's the cautious read?

MayaThe cautious read is that this is the most detailed organic detection we've seen in Jezero Crater. That's real.

DavidYeah.

MayaBut carbon shows up in non-biological processes too, volcanic activity, meteorite impacts. So the scientists are excited not declaring victory.

DavidWhich, honestly, I respect. Don't oversell it. The article actually said this is the most detailed organic detection in Jezero Crater, so they're clearly being careful with the language.

MayaAnd Perseverance has been collecting samples that could get sent back to Earth eventually. That's when we'd actually know something definitive.

DavidRight. So for now, it's like Mars maybe had something going on billions of years ago. And we're slowly building the case.

MayaFiled under possibly the biggest story in human history, still pending confirmation.

DavidGracie the giraffe escaped from a private ranch in Texas Hill Country nearly- nearly two weeks ago, and according to the Associated Press, no one can find her.

MayaNo one can find a giraffe.

DavidShe is six feet at the shoulder minimum, and she is just out there living her best life.

MayaTexas Hill Country is like rough terrain rocky cedar trees everywhere. I'm honestly a little impressed

DavidRight? The ranch owner and local officials have been out searching and she keeps staying a few steps ahead.
