Good Morning.
This is The Morning Rundown.
Thanks For waking up With US.
Hey, Good to be back With You.
And With You too, Maya.
Coffee, headlines, Letss go.
Always.
So today we're starting In Minnesota, how It turned into Ground zero For Trumpss Immigration
crackdown.
A Justice Department probe into The Democratic Governor, And new court Limits On ICE That
conservatives say could make cities less safe.
Then Welll hit Tech And geopolitics, conversational AI Ads That feel A little too nosy, A Big
SpaceX national security launch, And whether tougher rules On Chinese EVs Are actually
common sense, not xenophobia.
Exactly.
And later, we're digging into A disputed death In ICE custody And stepped-up SoCal raids,
how You balance Real Border enforcement With, You know, community trust And basic accountability.
Plus The Grandpa Veatcha verdict In San Francisco, A huge flashpoint In The crime And prosecution
debate.
Are Big city DAs really putting victims' rights first?
So um, lots of Power, policy, And Real people In The middle of It all, without The cable
news yelling.
Right.
Welll give You The context.
And what actually matters For your day.
Okay, Okay.
Letss get into It.
Politics And Power is up first.
Minnesota, Trump, And The new ICE rules.
Minnesota is basically Ground zero Right Now For this huge fight over law enforcement,
Immigration, And political Power.
Yeah, Itss Like everything colliding At once.
Criminal probe into The Governor, ICE all over The headlines, Trump leaning In hard.
So um, quick backdrop.
The Justice Department has opened A criminal investigation into Minnesotass Governor And
The Minneapolis mayor.
This goes back to how They handled protests And possible corruption around contracts.
Right.
And conservatives Are looking At this Like, Finally, Some scrutiny.
Because Blue state leaders almost never seem to get serious federal heat.
Exactly.
At The Same time, Trump has ordered this Big ICE surge In Minnesota.
More arrests, more worksite operations, more presence around courthouses.
And Democrats flew In, held this accountability hearing At The state capitol, saying people
Are living In, quote, intense trauma And terror.
That language is doing A lot of work.
Like, is It scary to have more ICE around If Youree here illegally?
Sure.
But terror makes It sound Like Theyree Just randomly targeting families For fun.
Exactly.
Theress A difference between not liking enforcement And It being unlawful.
ICE is executing federal law That Congress passed.
And You know, this is A state Democrats have counted On.
So When Trump picks Minnesota, It feels intentional, kind of daring them.
Are You really going to fight me On enforcing The law here?
Itss A pressure campaign, politically.
But Itss also A message to other states.
Sanctuary-style policies Are not going to get A free ride.
Letss talk about what Just happened In Minneapolis, though.
The shooting during an ICE operation That sparked protests.
And Now A judge has stepped In.
Yeah.
A federal judge issued Limits On ICEss crowd control tactics.
So basically, during protests, They can't Just blanket use tear gas, rubber bullets,
And mass arrests The way They might have In The past.
And They have to give clearer dispersal orders, more body camera Transparency, That kind of
thing.
On paper, Some of That sounds reasonable.
Nobody wants another situation where peaceful protesters get hit Because One agitator throws
A bottle.
For Sure.
But The conservative concern here is, Are We tying law enforcement's hands So much
That They can't restore order If things turn violent quickly?
Right, Because protests can flip In Like five minutes.
One person fires A shot, A car gets set On fire, And Now agents Are hesitating Because
Theyree scared A judge will second guess every move.
Exactly.
And ICE isn't A local police Department With years of community outreach.
Theyree there For specific enforcement actions.
Limiting their tools In A chaotic crowd situation could put agents And bystanders At risk.
You also get this weird double standard.
When local progressive officials restrict cooperation With ICE, Itss called values.
When A judge restricts ICE, Itss called accountability.
But If Trump pushes back, suddenly Itss authoritarian.
Yeah, selective outrage much?
I mean, be consistent.
Either You want clear rules For everyone, or Youree Just mad Because Itss Trump.
And Thatss where this larger theme comes In.
How Trump uses leverage.
In Minnesota, Itss enforcement muscle.
Abroad, Itss economic pressure.
Youree talking about Greenland.
Yep.
He Just floated The idea of Tariffs On countries That don't back The US controlling Greenland.
Which sounds wild At first.
It does.
Like, Support my Greenland dream or I hit your exports.
But strategically, Greenland is huge.
Rare earth minerals, Arctic shipping lanes, military positioning.
Hess basically saying, If You want access to The US market, You should align With our
security priorities.
So Itss The Same Trump toolkit.
Use whatever leverage you've got.
With mayors And governors, Itss ICE And Justice Department Power.
With allies, Itss Tariffs.
And critics say, Hess abusing Power.
But A lot of conservatives hear, Finally someone is using American Power In our interest instead
of apologizing For It.
The Real question is where The line is.
When does tough leverage become actual overreach?
Like, If The Justice Department probe In Minnesota looks cherry-picked, while other scandals
get ignored, Thatss A problem.
Yeah.
Selective enforcement is poison.
If You go After red states For abortion laws, But ignore Blue states breaking Immigration
law, or vice versa, people lose faith.
And once That trust is gone, Any ICE surge, Any tariff threat, looks Like pure Politics,
not policy.
Which is dangerous, Because We do need borders enforced, And We do need economic tools against
China, Russia, whoever.
So bottom line On Minnesota?
Itss not Just about One Governor or One ICE operation.
Itss A test case For how far A president can Push law enforcement And economic Power
to get results.
And whether The system can check That without basically neutering The tools We actually
need to stay safe.
Speaking of tools And Power, After The break, we're jumping into how Tech is getting pulled
into These Same fights.
AI-style conversational Ads, SpaceX hauling Spy Satellites, And Chinass EVs flooding our
market.
Yeah, your chats, your car, even what's orbiting over your head.
None of That is Just Tech anymore.
Itss geopolitics.
Stick around.
So If The first SEGMENT was all about Trump using law And Tariffs as leverage In Minnesota
And even Greenland, this is The Tech version of That.
Right, Itss Power again.
But Now Itss In your phone, In orbit, And In your car.
Exactly.
Letss start With The Tech.
Those chat GPT style Ads, Picture this, Youree chatting With an AI about, say, budgeting
or parenting, And suddenly It, helpfully, suggests A credit card or A therapy app.
Yeah, Like, Imm Just here to help You, And also to sell You stuff.
Pretty much.
Behind The scenes, The AI is flagging keywords, topics, even your tone, Then matching That
to advertisers who've paid to hit people In That exact mindset.
So not Just, You Googled shoes, here Are shoes, But, You sound anxious, here's A product
For anxious people.
Thatss A different level.
And Thatss where I think privacy-minded conservatives should be loud.
Because Itss not Just tracking clicks, Itss mining your inner life For profit.
And I mean, We Just did CES, And everything was AI-powered, AI-enhanced, AI-flavored.
At Some Point, Itss Like, Are We building tools, or Are We building A 24-7 sales funnel
With A friendly face?
Right.
And The friendly face never shuts up.
And It never forgets.
Exactly.
Plus, On free speech grounds, whoever controls That chatbot can nudge The conversation.
They can quietly downrank ideas They don't Like, And uprank brands And viewpoints They do.
Yeah, this is where The neutral Tech myth kinda dies.
If The Same system That moderates your Politics talk is also selling You stuff, I don't Totally
trust That.
So what do You want to see, Maya?
Disclosures?
Limits?
Bare minimum, clear labels.
You Are Now being advertised to.
No sneaky, helpful suggestions.
And honestly, regulators should treat chat history as super sensitive, Like Medical data,
not Just another cookie.
Imm With You.
Conservatives who say, get Big Tech out of my head, Are not crazy here.
Yeah, this isn't about hating innovation.
Itss Like what We said With ICE In Minnesota.
You can Support The mission, And still worry about unchecked Power.
Perfect link.
Alright, Letss go from creepy Ads to Spy Satellites.
SpaceX Just did Its first national security launch of 2026, classified payloads For The Pentagon.
So For people who Just hear Spy satellite And think movie stuff, what do These actually do?
Broadly, three things.
Watch, listen, And connect.
High res imaging to see what China or Russia Are moving around.
Signals intel to pick up communications.
And secure communications So our forces can talk without being jammed.
So basically, If Theress A crisis over, say, Taiwan, These birds In orbit Are how We know
what's really happening.
Yeah, And The Pentagonss betting On SpaceX Because Itss cheaper, faster, And more responsive
than The old school contractors.
You can launch smaller Satellites more often, instead of One giant vulnerable asset.
That constellation model.
Exactly.
It makes It harder For China or Russia to Just knock out One thing And blind US.
And You do feel A little patriotic about It, Right?
Like whatever You think of Elon personally, having American rockets, putting American
hardware up there, That matters When Beijing And Moscow Are racing US.
100%.
Space is Now A contested domain.
Either We lead or We watch other countries set The rules.
Any downside Youree watching?
Just making Sure The Pentagon doesn't get So dependent On One company That It becomes
A single Point of failure.
Competition is still healthy.
Yeah, Same theme.
Power concentrated In too few hands, whether Itss AI platforms or launch pads.
Speaking of concentrated Power, Letss hit Chinese EVs.
Because Theyree coming, And Detroit is nervous.
Oh Yeah. So, Chinese electric cars Are already undercutting European prices.
If They really crack The North American market, Youree talking cheaper cars That US automakers can't match without bleeding money.
And Theyree cheaper, partly Because of heavy state Support, lower labor costs, And, frankly, less regulation.
Plus, this is The part That freaks people out,
Itss not Just A car, Itss A rolling data center.
Location, driving habits, Maybe even in-cabin cameras.
Right. So imagine A fleet of foreign-made, networked vehicles,
all quietly sending telemetry back to servers A hostile government can access.
We already worry about TikTok. Now Picture TikTok On wheels.
So how should US policy respond? Tariffs? Bans?
Idd start With Two things. One, tough national security reviews On Any foreign-connected car data.
Two, don't be shy about Tariffs If Theress obvious undercutting And state subsidies. Protect your own workers.
Thatss where Some On The Right Are landing. Free markets, Yes, But not free surrender.
Exactly. Compete, But don't be naive. If China is playing industrial policy hardball, We don't win by pretending Theyree not.
Consumers need honesty. If A car is gathering sensitive data, say It.
Let people decide If The cheaper sticker price is worth handing over their driving life to A foreign company.
So, Tech, Space, cars. Itss all The Same question.
Who controls The systems We live inside of, And whose values shape them?
And When those systems intersect With government Power, whether Itss Satellites or Immigration enforcement, The stakes get very Real.
Which is Exactly where we're going next. After The break, we're back On The Ground.
An ICE facility death In California That witnesses say was not A suicide.
Plus, That Grandpa Vicha verdict And what Itss doing to trust In The Justice system.
And Welll tie In how Culture, hashtag MeToo, And even concert lineups Are becoming part of That Same accountability fight. Stick around.
All Right, Letss jump into what this all looks Like On The Ground.
Yeah, from AI Ads mining emotions yesterday to very Real fear In communities today.
Exactly. So In California, ICE Just reported A Cuban immigrant died In custody, called It A suicide.
But multiple detainees say guards pinned him down, choked him. He was yelling He couldn't breathe.
Thatss serious. And to be clear, We don't have video yet. Wevee got ICEss official statement On One side And These witness accounts On The other.
Right. But Either way, people inside That facility watched A man die.
Then On top of That, there Are These stepped up ICE raids In Southern California.
Folks say agents Are staking out apartments, job sites, even parking lots.
And For mixed status families, Thatss terrifying. Kids wondering If mom's going to be home When They get back from school.
Yeah. I mean, Ivee talked to people who won't go to The grocery store Right Now.
But ICE is In The neighborhood And life Just stops.
At The Same time, I want to be fair to The other side here.
A lot of Americans Are looking At The Border mess And saying We need enforcement. We can't Just ignore lawbreaking.
Totally. Border security isn't evil. The question is, where's The line between enforcing The law And traumatizing whole communities?
And If A detainee dies, is anyone outside ICE actually investigating?
Thatss The key. We need independent eyes.
Medical examiners, inspectors general, even local DAs When Theress evidence of abuse.
We talked about With AI Ads, Right? The people With all The Power control The narrative.
Exactly. And conservatives, frankly, should want clean operations.
If ICE is following The rules, body cams, better oversight, That protects agents from false claims, too.
Yes, Transparency helps both sides. And Maybe, You know, fewer pre-dawn raids where Youree taking dads away In front of toddlers.
Idd add One more nuance. Theress A difference between going After violent offenders versus sweeping up anyone With an overstayed visa who's working A construction job.
Thatss huge. Prioritizing Real threats makes communities safer And lowers The fear level. When everything's A target, nothing feels safe.
So, bottom line For me, Strong borders, Strong due process. We can walk And chew gum there.
Same. Enforce The law. But don't pretend These Are Just numbers On A spreadsheet. These Are families.
Speaking of families, Letss pivot to this Grandpa Vecha case In San Francisco.
Yeah, this One hurts. So, Vecha Ratana Pakti, 84-year-old Thai grandfather, was shoved to The Ground In 2021, died from his injuries.
The video went viral. People saw It as part of That spike In attacks On Asian elders.
The young man charged, Antoine Watson, was facing murder. Jury comes back, not guilty On murder, But guilty On felony elder abuse And manslaughter.
And The family is devastated. They wanted A murder conviction. A lot of Asian American groups Are furious.
Online, You see, San Francisco doesn't care about victims. Blue cities go soft On crime.
So, here's where It gets tricky. Legally, murder usually requires proving intent. Did He intend to kill, or At least act With That malice standard?
The defense argued He was reckless And violent, But not intentionally trying to kill this man.
And juries Are told to follow That law, not Just vibes. I get That. But When You watch That video, Youree Like, how is That not murder?
Right. Emotionally, It feels Like murder. Legally, Some jurors clearly thought prosecutors overcharged, instead of going straight For something Like manslaughter That was easier to prove.
And Then we're back In That bigger debate. Are DAs In Big cities being too cautious On Some cases, way too lenient On others, And victims' families feel Like Theyree The last priority?
Yeah. In A lot of These cities, you've got this reform wave. Less incarceration, more diversion. Some of That is absolutely needed.
But When an 84-year-old is dead, And The headline isn't murder conviction, people see That as proof The pendulum swung too far.
Plus, The hate crime piece. He wasn't convicted of That, Either.
And For Asian communities who lived through 2020-2021, who literally changed how They ride The bus or walk outside, It feels Like The system still doesn't Take their fear seriously.
I do think We should separate Two things, though. One is, did this specific guy have racial motive? The other is, Are prosecutors And judges sending A clear signal That attacks On vulnerable people, especially The elderly, will bring The harshest penalties, period?
Yeah, Thatss A Good distinction. Maybe You can't prove racism In his head, But You can still say, If You shove an 84-year-old to The concrete, we're throwing The book At You.
Exactly. Thatss where law And order actually come In.
So where do We land here?
For me, Itss this.
If communities feel both over-policed, Like In those ICE raids, And under-protected, Like
With Grandpa Vicha, Theyree going to lose faith In every institution.
Yep.
And once trust is gone, It doesn't matter If Itss cops, DAs, or even those AI systems
We talked about yesterday.
People assume Itss rigged.
So, balance.
Real Border enforcement With Real oversight.
Real criminal Justice reform That still puts victims At The center.
And politicians who don't Just chase hashtags, But actually fix The laws That make These
cases So messy.
Welll leave It there For today.
Tomorrow, we're looking At how schools Are becoming The next Big battleground over curriculum,
discipline, And even phones In classrooms.
Yeah, Culture Wars In homeroom.
Thatlll be fun.
Thanks For listening to The Morning Rundown.
Take care of yourselves.
And each other.
Welll see You Tomorrow.
All Right, Thatss It For today's Morning Rundown.
Remember When We talked about Minnesota basically being Ground zero For this whole Trump Immigration
crackdown?
That mix of law enforcement, courts, And Politics is going to shape what security really means
On The Ground.
Yeah, Totally.
And The Big thing is, If We care about safety And fairness, We can't pretend These fights
over ICE And oversight Are Just vibes.
They decide who actually gets protected.
Exactly.
So basically, stay informed, not Just outraged.
If You got something out of this, hit subscribe, leave A quick review, And share The show With
