MayaAlright, sports first. Let's start there. All right. So last night happened. The New York Knicks are NBA champions for the first time since 1973.

David52 years, Maya. 52 years.

MayaI know. Like, think about that. The last time they won, Nixon was in the White House.

DavidPeople have been born, had kids, and those kids have had kids without ever seeing a Knicks title.

MayaThat's a dynasty of heartbreak right there. But okay, they did it. 94-90 over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, and Jalen Brunson was everything.

Speaker 3BBC had the final score this morning, and Yahoo Sports put it perfectly: they said this whole era started with Brunson, and it ended with him. Finals MVP. Not a surprise.

Speaker 3It really is. All right, but let's not sleep on the other big sports moment this weekend.

MayaThe USMNT, Yeah.

Speaker 316 million viewers for the Paraguay match. Deadline reported that's a record for an English-language soccer broadcast in the U.S., World Cup or otherwise.

MayaWait, ever? Not just this tournament?

Speaker 3That's what Deadline said. English-language record. And that's across Fox, Tubi, Telemundo, Peacock combined.

MayaOkay, so that is actually a big deal. Like people actually- People act like soccer still hasn't broken through in America, and then 16 million people watch a group stage match?

Speaker 3With the World Cup on home soil, I don't think those numbers are going anywhere but up. The U.S. hosting means every game carries extra weight.

MayaRight. And the team won, which helps. Nothing kills a viewing party faster than a loss.

Speaker 3Spoken from experience?

MayaI plead the fifth. So, okay, next win their first title in half a century, the men's national team is pulling in record crowds. And this is all in the same weekend. That's genuinely unusual.

Speaker 3It's a good sports weekend for the country. You don't get those every week.

MayaYou really don't. And I think that matters, right? Like people needed this.

MayaSo I guess the question is, when the score board goes dark and you're looking at the rest of the week's news, how do you even begin to make sense of it? All right, shifting gears because not everything this weekend was sports.

Speaker 3No, definitely not. So Trump said Saturday that a US-Iran deal would be signed Sunday. Like he put a date on it.

MayaA specific date?

Speaker 3Specific date. And Iran came right back and said, no, an exact date hasn't been decided and it won't be tomorrow.

MayaThose two statements cannot both be true.

Speaker 3Right. And the BBC reported both sides of that in the same story, which is. is telling. But here's what I keep coming back to: the timing disagreement isn't just a scheduling mix-up.

MayaNo?

Speaker 3No. When a deal is actually close, both sides announce it together. The fact that Tehran is publicly pushing back on the timeline tells you they still have leverage they're not ready to give up.

MayaSo what's actually on the table, like what are they arguing over?

Speaker 3Reuters reported that the draft includes an oil sanctions waiver, nuclear limits, and an asset release.

DavidThat's a big package.

MayaWait, an oil sanctions waiver? That's huge for Iran's economy.

Davidand that's why Tehran isn't going to rush this. If you're Iran, you don't want to sign at Trump's timeline. You want the deal to look like you negotiated it on your terms.

DavidPart optics, part substance. Pakistan's prime minister, who's been mediating, said the deal was closer than ever before. before and could wrap up within 24 hours. NPR had that, but Could is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

DavidThe New York Times reported today that both countries are rebuilding their militaries 80 years after World War II. That's a sentence you don't say lightly.

MayaI mean, those are the two countries that were specifically prohibited or were heavily constrained from doing exactly this.

Speaker 3Right. Japan's constitution, Germany's post-war consensus, both cracking now because the security environment in Europe and Asia looks nothing like it did when those constraints were built.

MayaIs this NATO pressure, the Russia situation?

Speaker 3Both. The Ukraine war spooked Germany badly, and Japan is watching China and North Korea with a very different calculus than they had 10 years ago. You can make the case that rearmament is rational. Doesn't mean it's not a big deal historically. Historically.

Speaker 3Seizing one is not routine, it's a signal.

MayaOkay, so Iran deal in flux, Germany and Japan rearming, Russia losing a tanker to the British Navy. It's a lot of moving pieces. And every one of them connected. When the post-war order shifts, it doesn't shift in one place.

DavidSpeaking of things shifting in unexpected ways, Trump's name just quietly disappeared from the Kennedy Center, and there's a tarp involved.

MayaOf course there is.

DavidOkay, so shifting gears, you see the Kennedy Center story?

MayaThe tarp situation, yeah.

DavidThe tarp. NPR's Frank Langfitt was literally out there watching workers cover the whole thing up while it happened. Secretive process. That's how NPR described it.

MayaAnd we know the name is actually gone because of a court filing. Not a press conference, not a statement. A court filing.

DavidRight? Like you find out through legal paperwork. That's wild, right?

MayaI mean, follow the paper trail, I guess. A federal appellate court denied the Trump administration's last-minute attempt to stop the removal. CBS News had that. So at that point, the tarp goes up and workers get to it.

DavidAnd the tarp is still there. Name's gone, tarp still covering the spot. It's very... I don't know, it's a very specific kind of weird.

MayaThe institutional dynamic here is interesting, though: a judge ordered it, the administration tried to block it at the appellate level, lost, and then workers showed up and quietly did the job. No cameras allowed, according to NPR.

DavidNo cameras. They hid the actual removal from the public, like onlookers were there, watching this tarp go up, and that was all they got.

MayaWhich tells you both sides knew this was going to generate images. images, and someone decided those images shouldn't exist.

DavidSmart, I guess? Or just telling.

MayaSo the vibe at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is fight night.

DavidFight night for his 80th birthday tied to the 250th anniversary. Anniversary. AP said the crowd near the Lincoln Memorial was actually pretty diverse, UFC fans skew male and lean Republican, but the turnout was broader than you might expect.

MayaThe optics gap between those two events is something—a name quietly disappearing under a tarp across town, and simultaneously there's a crowd at the White House watching people punch each other.
