Iran Deal, Birthday Fights, and a Health Alert You Need to Hear

MayaGood morning, everyone. Welcome to the morning rundown. I'm Maya here with David. And okay, I have to say today's lineup is a lot.

DavidA lot is an understatement. Like, where do you even start?

MayaSo Axios and BBC are both reporting that the U.S. and Iran have reached a deal. Strait of Hormuz is back open. Oil dropped nearly 5% overnight and stock futures jumped.

DavidAnd there's a 60-day clock now for nuclear talks, which... I mean, markets are happy, but questions remain about what's actually in this agreement.

MayaRight. We'll dig into what we know and what's still murky.

DavidThen, and I promise this actually happened, UFC fights on the White House lawn.

MayaFor Trump's 80th. That's wild, right? And there was a massive upset in the main event.

DavidJustin Gaethje over Ilia Topuria. Nobody saw that coming.

MayaWe've also got some serious health and safety stories. A baby formula recall tied to botulism cases? A deadly skydiving plane crash in Missouri and Congo's Ebola outbreak claiming just 782 confirmed cases.

MayaAlright, the Iran deal first. All right, so big morning, like genuinely big.

DavidYeah, U.S. and Iran have a deal and markets are already moving. I want to start there because the market reaction tells you everything about how serious this is.

MayaRight, so for anybody who missed it, Axios and BBC both reporting this morning that the U.S. and Iran signed a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan. It ends months of military conflict and critically reopens the Strait of Hormuz.

DavidFollow the money." That strait is the choke point for roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply. It gets shut down, prices spike, it reopens, oil drops nearly five per cent overnight.

MayaWait, five percent overnight?

DavidCNBC had it this morning: US crude fell close to five percent the moment the deal was confirmed.

MayaOkay, so for anyone who's been grimacing at the pump lately, that's the direct line. The Strait of Hormuz isn't some- abstract geopolitics thing, it's why gas costs what it costs right now.

DavidExactly. And on the flip side, stock futures jumped. CNBC's live markets coverage showed all three major indexes pushing higher. If you've got a 401k,

Davidthis morning looked a lot better than last Monday.

MayaThat's wild, right? One deal and the whole picture shifts.

DavidIt does. And look, credit where it's due. The Trump administration got this done. Done. Pakistan mediated the signing set for Friday in Switzerland, according to BBC, but the U.S. got Iran to the table after three months of active conflict. That's not nothing.

MayaNo, it's not, and the WSJ is calling this a significant diplomatic win. Trump's already claiming the Strait will be, and I'm quoting here, permanently toll-free.

DavidYeah, permanently toll-free. I mean, I want to believe that, but permanently is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

MayaA lot of heavy lifting, yeah.

DavidHere's what I'm watching. There's a 60-day clock now, according to Axios, for nuclear talks to begin. 60 days. That's the real pressure point. The ceasefire is step one. What did the U.S. agree to to get Iran to that table? We don't have the full terms yet.

MayaAnd that's the question nobody's fully answered this morning. Like, the deal looks good on paper right now. Markets love it. But what are the actual terms?

DavidRight, and Axios noted the agreement extends the ceasefire while those negotiations start, so this isn't a final piece. It's a structure for talks. Big difference.

MayaOkay, so what does this mean for regular people beyond gas prices?

DavidShipping costs come down.

MayaMm-hmm.

DavidGlobal supply chains get a little less stressed. You might not feel it at the grocery store tomorrow, but three months from now, yeah, it moves things.

MayaI mean, after the last few years of supply chain chaos, that's not a small... small thing.

DavidNot at all. And look, if the nuclear talks actually happen and produce something, this could be, I don't want to overstate it, but it could be a genuinely significant foreign policy outcome.

MayaThe skeptic in me wants to know what we gave up, but the part of me that checks gas prices every time I drive past the station is cautiously happy right now.

DavidThat's fair. Cautious optimism is probably the right read.

MayaOh, and one more detail. This all happened on Trump's 80th birthday. Which, if you're into symbolism, the man had diplomats signing a ceasefire and apparently had other plans for the evening, too.

DavidYeah, the birthday party looked a little different than most.

MayaSo while all this history-making geopolitical stuff was happening, what does it say about a news cycle when the biggest diplomatic deal in years is sharing a headline with something completely different happening on the White House lawn?

DavidThat is a genuinely great question.

MayaSo, on the birthday note, Trump turned 80 yesterday, and I mean the man did not go low-key.

DavidNo, no he did not.

MayaHe had live UFC fights on the White House South Lawn, like actual cage fighting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

DavidI saw the footage. I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't a bit.

MayaRight? So it was the UFC Freedom 250 card. Seven fights, build around Trump's birthday and the... And the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence's signing. According to AP News, the event was broadcast on Paramount Plus.

DavidAnd the main event delivered genuinely. DePorio was the heavy favorite going in.

MayaAnd then Justin Gaethje just completely dismantled him. Yahoo Sports called it the ultimate American upset.

DavidDePorio had looked untouchable for like two years, so Gaethje pulling that off on the White House lawn of all places, that's a wild sports moment, regardless of the politics.

MayaThe crowd had to lose their minds.

DavidOh, ESPNs coverage was electric. The setting alone. I mean, theres never been a fight card like that.

MayaAnd Trump apparently loved every second of it. Eighty years old, a Rand deal in the morning, UFC at night. Thats a day.

DavidNot a bad birthday itinerary. Ill give him that.

MayaI mean, come on. Okay, but we do have to shift gears here because not everything from last night was celebratory.

DavidYeah, the Oliver Tree news.

MayaThe Washington Post is reporting that singer Oliver Tree was killed in a- in a helicopter crash in Brazil, along with six other people, Sixty total.

DavidThat's awful. He was, I mean, millions of fans. Life goes on, miss you. That guy had a whole weird, wonderful thing going.

MayaHe did, and I think what hits about it is the timing. It's this big celebratory news cycle. Markets up, birthday, fight night, and then this. Six people are gone.

DavidYeah. Thirty-one years old. Way too young.

MayaYeah, we don't have many details yet on what caused the crash, so we'll leave it there, but worth sitting with for a second.

DavidAgreed.

MayaAnd honestly, that shift in mood kind of carries us into what we're covering next, because there are some stories you need to hear before your week starts.

DavidYeah, and some of them are ones where you can actually do something with the information.

MayaThere's a baby formula recall that parents need to know about right now, an Ebola outbreak in Congo that's gotten a lot bigger, and a plane crash in Missouri that killed 12 people.

DavidHeavy stuff, but the kind of stuff that matters to have on your radar.

DavidYeah, starting with one that any parent needs to hear right now.

MayaCBS News reported that an organic baby formula brand issued a recall after three infants were diagnosed with infant botulism. The affected formula was sold at Target and on Naracom, according to the FDA.

DavidBotulism in infants is serious, Like this isn't a maybe toss-it situation. If you have a baby at home and you've bought organic formula recently, check the label today.

MayaYeah. Reuters and The Guardian both reported that a skydiving plane went down near Butler, Missouri Sunday morning shortly after takeoff from Butler Memorial Airport.

DavidTwelve people dead, the pilot and all 11 skydivers on board.

MayaThat's, I mean, that's everyone. No survivors.

DavidInvestigators are looking into it. AP News noted that skydiving plane crashes often trace back to poor maintenance and weak safety oversight. That's not a verdict here, just context for what they'll be examining.

MayaThese are older aircraft a lot of the time. High cycle counts, smaller operators. It's worth watching what the NTSB finds.

DavidAgreed, and obviously our thoughts go out to those families.

MayaAbsolutely. Okay. Congo.

DavidSo this Ebola outbreak has been building for a month now and the numbers just jumped. AP News is reporting 782 confirmed cases and 181 deaths as of the latest update from the Congolese Ministry of Health.

MayaAnd it's spreading. Two new health zones were affected, according to Reuters. It's pushed beyond the Ituri province into North and South Kivu. Uganda's seen cases too.

DavidThe strain matters here. This is the Bundibugyo virus, a rarer type of Ebola with no approved vaccine and no approved treatment. That's a different calculus than previous outbreaks.

MayaAnd the conditions on the ground are not helping. Armed conflict, attacks on health workers, local skepticism about the outbreak. The outbreak being real. The Guardian has been covering this. It's a really difficult environment to contain anything in.

DavidThe declaration came May 15th, so we're about a month in. The question isn't whether this is serious. It clearly is. The question is whether containment is even possible given the security situation.

MayaThat's the one to watch. When health workers can't safely operate in an outbreak zone, the math gets bad fast.

DavidYeah, no vaccine, armed conflict, spreading provinces. Keep an eye on the WHO's weekly updates if you want to track this one.
