Quick answers

Straight from the episode

The questions this one settles, without the listen.

Is Trump's pause on Iran strikes a sign of retreat?
No, David explains that Trump's conditional Iran off-ramp is a leverage tactic rather than a retreat, designed to apply pressure rather than signal a step back.
Is Hamas actually disarming under the recent deal?
According to an Israeli official cited by the AP, Hamas appears to be rebuilding rather than disarming, raising doubts about compliance with the disarmament deal.
Why is Rep. Max Miller facing calls to resign?
Senator Bernie Moreno, Miller's former father-in-law, has publicly said Miller shouldn't serve, but Miller is refusing to resign. David argues that party accountability should apply regardless of politics in this case.
How much did Spider-Man: Brand New Day make in its opening weekend?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day set a record with a $927 million opening, a result discussed alongside The Odyssey's box office performance that same weekend.
Why are blockbuster opening weekends so important for movie theaters?
David explains that ticket prices and screen counts make blockbuster weekends financially critical for struggling theater chains trying to stay afloat.
Why did Ariana Grande step back from public life and exit her West End debut?
The episode discusses Ariana Grande's decision with empathy, framing her exit from the West End debut and retreat from public life as an example of the toll fame can take, contrasting it with the commercial triumph of blockbuster openings.

MayaMorning, everybody. Welcome back to the Morning Rundown.

DavidAnd boy, do we have a lineup for you today.

MayaWe're starting heavy, wildfires ripping through Washington state tens of thousands of people already out of their homes.

DavidYeah, and Greece is fighting its own fires right now too, with a helicopter collision caught up in the middle of it.

MayaRough morning all around.

DavidThen we're into politics. I've got the read on Trump's Iran move plus that Max Miller mess out of Ohio.

MayaWait, his own former father-in-law, a sitting senator, says he shouldn't be in Congress?

DavidThat's the family gathering I would not want an invite to.

MayaNo kidding.

DavidAnd then, thankfully, we lighten up a little.

MayaOh, big time. Spider-Man just pulled off one of the biggest box office weekends ever.

DavidWild. And Ariana Grande stepping back from the spotlight completely.

MayaWe'll get into what's behind that.

DavidLots on deck. Let's get moving.

MayaAlright, Wildfires first. 60,000. That's how many people in Washington State got told to grab what they can and go.

David60,000 out of their homes right now.

MayaAlicia Curry filed a report today out of Spokane, and the video is nuts. Huge plumes of smoke just rolling up right next to people's houses.

DavidSpokane's the second biggest city in the whole state. This isn't some remote forest patch.

MayaExactly. And CBS News is tracking three separate fires. It fires out there. The Old Trails Fire, the Fairview Fire, and the Autumn Lane Fire.

DavidThree at once. So resources are getting split three ways.

MayaOne evacuee told a local crew she had maybe ten minutes to grab the dog, some photos, and get out. Ten minutes.

DavidWhen you get that order, you move. It's not a suggestion, it's a countdown.

MayaRight. And once that order flips to... Ooh, okay, hit me.

DavidSwitching gears, Iran.

MayaOoh, okay, hit me.

DavidTrump says new negotiations are starting and Al Jazeera reports he's calling off strikes on the condition a deal comes together fast.

MayaWait, so no strikes. For now?

DavidFor now. CNN's live coverage today notes Iran hasn't publicly budged on the Strait of Hormuz. No deal exists yet.

MayaSo this is basically a pressure play.

DavidExactly. You put a deadline on the table, you create leverage. create leverage. Iran comes to the table or it eats the consequences.

MayaOkay, that tracks.

DavidAnd the sanctions pressure this administration's kept up, credit where it's due, that's what got Tehran talking at all.

MayaOkay, but is Israel actually on board with any of this?

DavidDifferent piece of the map, the AP's Sam Mednick reported Israel has serious concerns about Hamas' armament deal.

MayaWait, I thought that was already moving forward.

DavidIt's moving, but an Israeli official told the AP Hamas P. Hamas looks like it's rebuilding its military, not disarming.

MayaSo no troop pullback from Gaza yet?

DavidNot until Hamas disarms. For real, that's the condition.

MayaMakes sense. You don't hand over the keys before the job's actually done.

DavidRight. That skepticism isn't sabotage. It's just reading what's happening on the ground.

MayaOkay, switching to something closer to home.

DavidYeah, this one's ugly. Rep. Max Miller, domestic abuse allegations, and Axios reports

Maya[APPLAUSE]

Davidreports he's not dropping out.

MayaWait, isn't his own former father in law calling him out?

DavidYep. Senator Bernie Moreno told the AP that Miller fails basic standards of character and shouldn't serve.

MayaWhoa, that's family turning on family, in public.

DavidAnd Axios reported Moreno went further, called him a danger flat out.

MayaWow, That's rough. But does the party actually do anything about it?

DavidThat's the real test. If you want to hold the others The other side to a standard, you hold your own guy to it too.

MayaFollow the money, follow the... loyalty, I guess?

DavidSomething like that. I'm just saying slow accountability starts looking like no accountability.

MayaAnd him staying put keeps the story alive every single news cycle.

DavidWhich is its own kind of pressure. Scrutiny doesn't fade just because you ignore it.

MayaSpeaking of scrutiny...

DavidOoh, nice segue.

MayaBecause that's basically the whole mood in Hollywood this weekend, too. Spider-Man just broke the box office.

DavidYeah, I saw that number and did a double take.

MayaThe Guardians' Sian Cain reported Brand New Day open to $927 million worldwide, second biggest opening weekend ever.

DavidAnd NBC's Angela Yang's is paired with The Odyssey, the two movies pulled in over $400 million domestically. Biggest box office weekend in history.

MayaEverybody's complaining about prices, but somehow found forty dollars for a ticket and popcorn.

DavidTicket prices tell part of the story. Average is pushing 11, 12 bucks now, and premium formats run 20 plus. Even a decent turnout prints money for studios.

MayaSo theaters really needed a weekend like this.

DavidFollow the money, and chains have been bleeding screens for years. One weekend like this keeps a lot of them open through winter.

MayaOkay, now something with a lot less cheering. Ariana Grande.

DavidRight. This one's different.

MayaShe's exiting the West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George, the one with Jonathan Bailey. Deadline's Glenn Garner reported she's citing quote, ongoing public scrutiny.

DavidAnd ABC's Shafiq Najib reported she'll step back from public-facing work once the Eternal Sunshine tour ends in September.

MayaThat's a tough trade to make, the bigger you- The more you get, the less room you have to just exist.

DavidKind of the flip side of a nine hundred twenty seven million dollar weekend-one end of fame prints money, the other costs you your privacy.

MayaRough exchange rate.

DavidNo kidding.

MayaKeep an eye on Spider-Man's numbers this week. If it holds anywhere close, theaters might be looking at a real turnaround year.

DavidAnd keep an eye on September. That's when we'll see if Grande's break actually sticks.

MayaAlright, that's the rundown. Crazy day. Wildfires, Iran, Spider-Man breaking records.

DavidYeah, and honestly, that Max Miller story stuck with me. If you hold the other side accountable, you hold your own guy to it too.

MayaTotally. And that Ariana Grande news kind of hit different. The bigger you get, the less room you have to just exist.

DavidRight. Follow the money. Follow the pressure. That's basically today's whole show.

MayaThat's actually the tagline now. Anyway, if you liked this one, subscribe and leave us a review. Seriously helps.

DavidIt does. We'll be back tomorrow with more.

MayaThanks for hanging out with us. Talk soon.
