38 Dead in Kyiv Strike, Trump vs. Welker Over the FCC, and Google Renames a Great Lake

DavidUh-oh. That's never a good sign this early.

MayaYou know what I mean some days.

DavidWell, buckle up, 'cause this one's a mixed bag.

MayaThis is the Morning Rundown. I'm Maya.

DavidI'm David, and we've got three things for you today.

MayaYeah, so a strike overseas that's honestly pretty grim, a full-on media brawl over Trump and the FCC-

DavidAnd Google, of all companies, renaming a Great Lake.

MayaRight. And that one is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.

DavidWe'll get there, but it's not all laughs today.

MayaNo, it's really not.

DavidSome of this is heavy.

MayaIt's the kind of morning where you go from a genuinely sad headline straight into an argument about a map, and somehow that's just Tuesday now?

DavidThat's the job, though. We try to get you all of it before your coffee is even done brewing.

MayaYeah. So let's start with Ukraine, because the news out of Kyiv overnight is bad.

DavidIt is. Let's get into what actually happened.

MayaOkay. The number out of Kyiv this morning is 38.

David38 dead. Reuters and NBC are both calling this the deadliest strike on Ukraine all year.

Maya38. That's like wiping out an entire small classroom of people in one hit.

DavidAnd it's not the first bad strike this year. It's just the worst one so far.

MayaWorst one so far is still a scary phrase to hear this far into a war.

DavidIt is.

MayaSo what actually got hit?

DavidAn ammunition warehouse near Kyiv. Not a neighborhood, not a power plant. A stockpile.

MayaWait, so once that catches?

DavidYou don't get one explosion. CNN described it as wave after wave of blasts going off.

MayaHow long does something like that even keep going for?

DavidLong enough that people who survived it are describing multiple rounds of it, not just the first hit.

MayaUgh, so it's not really about the missile at that point.

DavidRight. It's about what the missile lands next to. A depot like that turns one hit into a dozen.

MayaThat's a horrifying way for it to keep going.

DavidThere's a survivor account, too, somebody just saying, "We're alive." Like, that was the whole story of their night.

MayaThat's a gut punch of a quote. You don't need much more than that to picture what people went through.

DavidNo, you don't.

MayaAnd the toll wasn't even locked in right away. It climbed over the day.

DavidIt did. Zelenskiy's office confirmed it rising as the hours went on, up to that 38.

MayaRising all day is almost worse in a way. You keep checking back, and the number's gone up again.

DavidYeah, that slow climb is its own kind of dread.

MayaOkay, and where's the negligence angle come in? I saw that mentioned.

DavidThe New York Times picked that up. Ukraine itself pointing to negligence as part of what happened at the depot.

MayaNegligence, like storage, like where they were keeping it?

DavidThe reporting doesn't spell out exactly what kind, just that there's an internal piece to this sitting alongside the strike itself.

MayaThat's a hard thing for a country to admit mid-war.

DavidIt is. Doesn't make the strike any less Russia's doing, but it's not a clean story either.

MayaDoes the reporting say whether Ukraine has given any indication of what's next? An investigation, accountability, anything like that?

DavidNot from what's out there yet. It's still fresh enough that most of what we're getting is the toll and the blame, not the follow-up.

MayaIs this the kind of hit analysts have flagged as a pattern or a one-off?

DavidThere's a group that tracks the war day by day that logged it, but not as some new pattern, just one more entry in a long ledger.

MayaA ledger that's had a rough one at the top this week.

DavidUsually, the finger-pointing happens weeks later, after everyone's had time to spin it. This came out the same day.

MayaI don't wanna blow past this. Thirty-eight people, real families waking up to that news.

DavidYeah. We're not gonna sit here and pick it apart for 20 minutes, but it's worth sitting with that number for a second.

MayaYeah.

DavidTotally different scale, totally different continent, but we've got a fight of our own brewing back home.

MayaPlease say this is the Trump thing.

DavidIt's the Trump thing. Him and Kristen Welker are trading shots, and somehow the FCC got dragged into the middle of it.

MayaOh, I have been waiting for all morning for you to bring this one up.

DavidGood, because the numbers everybody's throwing around in that fight aren't exactly what either side wants you to think they are.

MayaThat's gonna be a fun one to sort through.

DavidIt really is, because both sides are quoting completely different tallies.

MayaOkay. So CNN reported that Trump posted online this weekend that Kristen Welker should be, and this is his actual line, "reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment."

DavidWait, what? What did she even say? A one-liner about his endorsement record having, quote, "mixed results."

MayaThat's it? That's the whole crime?

DavidThat's the whole crime.

MayaOkay, calling the federal government on somebody over one line feels like a lot.

DavidIt does, and here's the part that got buried. Mediaite pointed out that line didn't even air on the actual Meet the Press broadcast. It was from the local pre-show segment on NBC4 Washington.

MayaSo it's not even the flagship show.

DavidRight. It's the local affiliate's little preview thing.

MayaMan, the FCC doesn't even regulate content like that anyway, does it?

DavidThat's a separate argument, but let, let's stay on the numbers because that's actually the interesting fight here.

MayaNo, seriously, though, if the FCC doesn't have jurisdiction over what a local affiliate says in a five-minute pre-show hit, what's the actual mechanism here? Does he just want them investigated, or does he want something pulled off the air?

DavidBased on what's out there, it reads more like a public pressure move than an actual filing. He's posting online, not going through whatever formal complaint process exists.

MayaSo it's less, "Here's my legal complaint," and more, "Hey, FCC, do something about this."

DavidThat's how I'd read it, yeah. Whether that goes anywhere is a whole different question.

MayaOkay, hit me.

DavidThe Washington Examiner looked at his 2026 endorsements and said they largely check out. The losses they point to are rare. They name Mike Lindell and Congressman Andy Ogles as basically the exceptions.

MayaTwo losses out of how many, though? That's the number I want.

DavidThey don't give a running total, just that those two are the standout misses.

MayaOkay, so if the losses are rare enough that a news outlet can name them individually, that's not exactly mixed results.

DavidThat's the argument. And RedState went further. They framed the whole fight as Trump defending something close to a 99% success rate against what they called media mischaracterization.

Maya99% is a big number to throw around.

DavidIt is, and I want to flag it plainly, that's RedState's framing, and it hasn't been checked against a neutral scorecard anywhere we could find.

MayaSo we don't actually know if it's 99. We just know two outlets sympathetic to him are backing him up hard.

DavidExactly. Washington Examiner and RedState both lean his direction, and neither one is running the math against an independent tally.

MayaWhich, okay, look, if the record really is that strong, then calling mixed results a mischaracterization kinda tracks.

DavidHuh. Yeah, it does track, if the number holds up.

MayaBut threatening the FCC over it is still wild to me.

DavidTotally. Those are two different things. He could be right about the record and still be way overreacting to a local segment.

MayaRight, right. Like you can win the argument and still lose the room.

DavidThat's a good way to put it.

MayaI mean, come on. You don't need a federal agency because a local anchor said mixed.

DavidNo, you really don't. And Welker didn't invent the phrase out of nowhere either. She was just characterizing a record that apparently has, what, two notable misses on it?

MayaSo the actual dispute might be smaller than the reaction to it.

DavidThat's kinda always how these blow up, isn't it? The reaction becomes the story.

MayaIt's kind of funny that the format that caused it, a two-second local aside, is way smaller than the response.

DavidWay smaller. That's the disconnect. Nobody's gonna remember the actual pre-show clip a week from now. They'll remember Trump wants the FCC involved.

MayaIt does. Okay, we're not settling the exact percentage today. We don't have the neutral count in front of us.

DavidWe don't. So take the Ninety-nine with a grain of salt. But the direction of it, that his losses are rare, that part's holding up across more than one write-up.

MayaYeah, and that's really the honest way to leave it. Not he's right or she's wrong, just here's who's saying what, and here's what we can't independently confirm.

DavidWhich is more useful than picking a side we can't actually back up.

MayaFair. All right, before we go full doom and gloom on politics again-

MayaOkay, before we go, this next one's just fun. No fights, no FCC letters, nobody's endorsement record on the line.

DavidOoh, I like where this is going already.

MayaIt's about a map, sort of. Okay, so Google Maps, they actually did it.

DavidDid what?

MayaLake Ontario. If you're in the US right now, open your maps app. It says Lake America.

DavidWait, really?

MayaDead serious. CBS News reported Google put out a statement confirming it. US users see Lake America now.

DavidSo it's a geo-fenced lake.

MayaA geo-fenced lake. I've never said that sentence before.

DavidNobody has.

MayaI mean, think about it from a practical standpoint. If you're planning a trip and you tell your GPS, "Take me to Lake Ontario," does it still find it, or does it just get confused?

DavidProbably it just quietly resolves to whichever name your account defaults to. The bureaucracy of a single lake now has two settings, apparently.

MayaBut Ontario is not amused. Premier Doug Ford went off on this.

DavidWhat'd he say?

MayaOntario Premier Doug Ford said, quote, "No one's going to call it Lake of America. It's been Lake Ontario for hundreds of years."

DavidFair. Honestly, hundreds of years versus one app update?

MayaRight? He's not wrong that the app doesn't get the final word here.

DavidI mean, the lake doesn't care what your phone calls it.

MayaThe lake is just sitting there, unbothered.

DavidIt's kind of amazing how much attention a couple of pixels on a map can pull, honestly.

MayaRight? Like, the lake itself didn't need a rebrand. It did just fine as Ontario for a couple hundred years.

DavidMeanwhile, the White House is thrilled about this.

MayaOh, very thrilled. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung posted a celebratory reaction to the whole thing.

DavidOf course he did.

MayaLike this was a genuine policy win.

DavidI mean, it kind of is for them, symbolically.

MayaSure, if the goal was symbolic. It's not like the water moved.

DavidNo, the water's still Canadian on one side and American on the other, same as it's always been.

MayaIt's such a weirdly small thing to become an international moment over, but here we are.

DavidHonestly, that might be the most 2024 sentence either of us has said all show.

MayaSame lake, two names, depending which side of the border your phone thinks you're standing on.

DavidIt's very 2024, honestly. We used to fight about maps at treaty conferences. Now we fight about them in an app update.

MayaThat's the upgrade, apparently.

DavidI do wonder what happens on a boat, like if you're literally in the middle of the Lake.

MayaDoes your phone just flicker back and forth? Lake America, Lake Ontario, Lake America.

DavidSomebody needs to test that for journalism.

DavidAbsolutely not. I don't even own a canoe.

MayaFair enough.

DavidIn fairness, plenty of real diplomatic fights over the years have started with something just as small as a name on a map.

MayaTrue. Borders and names have started actual wars before, so a rename isn't even the weirdest thing on that list.

DavidBut it is kinda wild that a map label turned into an actual diplomatic moment. Ford's out here comparing it to a comedy sketch.

MayaWhich honestly tracks, because that's what it feels like.

DavidA whole Lake renamed for half its shoreline.

MayaIf nothing else, it's a great reminder that borders on a map and borders in real life aren't always the same argument.
