Quick answers
Straight from the episode
The questions this one settles, without the listen.
- Why does Mirakl say 99% of eCommerce isn't ready for AI shopping agents?
- Mirakl found that almost no product pages are structured in a way AI shopping agents can properly read and act on, meaning most merchants can't yet support agent-driven shopping even as platforms like Stripe and Natural invest in that space.
- Does traffic from AI shopping agents actually convert for merchants?
- Max and Rachel question this, noting that unlike human shoppers, a bot can abandon a cart with no guilt or recovery email, raising doubts about whether agent traffic converts into sales or is just an expensive new acquisition channel.
- What's driving Shopify's record $378 billion GMV?
- Rachel ties Shopify's record annual GMV and 29% growth to its new DSCP integration, alongside expanded fulfillment partnerships like DoorDash.
- Is same-day delivery worth it for mid-size merchants?
- Rachel argues same-day delivery economics depend on delivery density, not just technology, and offers a concrete test mid-size merchants should run to check feasibility before scaling same-day fulfillment.
- What is Meta doing to build trust on Facebook Marketplace?
- Meta launched a standalone Seller app and a free verification system aimed at reducing bad transactions, which Max frames as evidence that trust—not just listings—is Meta's real product on Marketplace.
- Why is Shein reporting a quarterly loss despite demand?
- Rachel explains Shein's loss as a cost-structure problem driven by tariffs, not a lack of consumer demand, and pairs it with the EU's $630 million counterfeit fine against AliExpress and a Senate probe into China ecommerce as signs of rising global trade scrutiny.

MaxWelcome to the Checkout Point, your quick dive into this week's e-commerce buzz with me, Alex, powered by Blicket. These 20 minutes pack the latest trends, news and insights. Let's navigate the digital marketplace together. Ready? Let's go!
RachelHey, everyone. Welcome back to the Checkout Point.
Speaker 3Glad you're here. We've got a full show for you today.
RachelYeah, so first up, AI agents are starting to do people's shopping for them.
Speaker 3And Mirakl found that 99% of e-commerce isn't actually ready for it.
RachelNinety-nine? That's wild, right?
Speaker 3We'll get into what that actually means for merchants.
RachelOh, and Shopify's numbers are looking huge, plus new delivery partnerships came in.
Speaker 3Right, and I've got real questions about who's footing the bill. bell for all that same-day shipping.
RachelSpeaking of which, Meta just launched a whole new app for Marketplace sellers.
Speaker 3And Michaels rolled out an AI shopping assistant of their own. We'll cover both.
RachelThen there's the policy side. Shein posted a loss, and the EU hit AliExpress with a $630 million fine.
Speaker 3630 million? Yeah, we need to talk about that one.
RachelThere's also a Senate probe into China and e-commerce, and India just loosened its rules for Amazon. Amazon.
Speaker 3Lots on the plate today, so where do you want to kick things off?
RachelLet's start with the AI agents, because if merchants aren't ready, that's a real problem for 2026.
Speaker 3Agreed. So walk me through what Mirakl actually found.
RachelThree easy ways to get your questions to us: Check the description for our web form, text us at seven four seven two nine three four six one two, or call the same number to leave a voice question. However you reach out, we can't wait to hear from you. Ninety nine percent. That's the number that stopped me cold this week.
Speaker 399% of what?
RachelOf eCommerce product pages. Mirakl put out research saying shoppers are already buying through AI assistance and almost none of these product pages are built for a bot to actually read them.
Speaker 3Wait, so the customers showed up before the store even flipped the sign to open?
RachelBasically, yeah. Amelia Van Camp wrote it up for Mirakl. Agents are out there shopping right now, and the shelves aren't labeled for them.
Speaker 3Okay, break that down for me: what does an agent actually need that a normal product page doesn't?
RachelSo a human sees a photo, reads a vibe, maybe squints at reviews. An agent needs structured data: size, material, return window, stock count-in a format it can parse in milliseconds, no vibes, just facts. Just facts.
Speaker 3Sounds like the world's pickiest customer, who also happens to buy in bulk.
RachelRight. And if your feed's messy, the bot just bounces. Picture a cart full of stuff, then nothing. Abandoned. No guilt, no email to win it back. It just moved on to a competitor with cleaner data.
Speaker 3A bot ghosting your checkout. Great. New problem for 2026.
RachelOh, it's a whole new heartbreak genre.
Speaker 3Okay, but here's my actual question. Does this traffic convert better or are we just- Just building plumbing for a channel that barely exists yet.
RachelThat's fair. Nobody's published a clean conversion number for agent traffic yet. It's early.
Speaker 3Because I've sat in budget meetings where future proofing turned into six figures nobody could explain a year later.
RachelSure, but the money's already moving on the infrastructure side. Stripe is in talks to buy OpenRouter, PYMNTS put the price around ten billion dollars.
Speaker 310 billion for a startup routing AI model traffic?
RachelFor the plumbing under it, yeah. PYMNTS also reported Stripe's been signing AI billing deals, basically letting AI products meter and charge usage automatically. Their AI-driven revenue already jumped according to that same reporting.
Speaker 3So Stripe's betting the volume follows the agents.
RachelExactly. And they're not alone. There's a company called Natural, a year old, and PYMNTS reported they raised $30 million just to build payment rails specifically for AI agents. 30 million for rails nobody's fully using yet.
Speaker 3I mean, somebody's got to lay the track before the train shows up.
RachelOkay,
Speaker 3but track costs money to maintain. Who's actually paying the fees here? The merchant? The agent's owner? The shopper? Honestly,
Rachelthat part's murky. Nobody's locked in the fee model yet, whether it rides the existing card rails or... Those are something new. Those are something new.
Speaker 3Right. That's what worries me. Everyone's racing to build for a customer that might buy the way we think, or might not.
RachelI get the caution. But think about what's actually cheap right now. Cleaning up your product feed, adding structured data, isn't some massive lift. It's more discipline than budget.
Speaker 3Okay, that I'll buy. That's not a $10 billion move. That's a Tuesday afternoon fix.
RachelRight. And the payment rail stuff. Stripe, naturally. Girl, that's infrastructure bets by companies with the balance sheet to gamble. A mid-sized merchant doesn't need to chase that this quarter.
Speaker 3So the takeaway is fix your data, skip the arms race.
RachelPretty much. Get found by the machines before you worry about how they'll pay.
Speaker 3And maybe don't let the bots break up with your cart quite so easily.
RachelOne heart break at a time.
Speaker 3So if the checkout side is this unsettled, what happens once the order's actually placed? Somebody still has to get the box out the door. Shifting gears completely, from bots checking out to who actually gets the box to your door.
RachelOoh, okay, from robots buying stuff to robots delivering stuff.
Speaker 3Not robots yet, but close. Shopify merchants processed $378 billion in gross sales last year. That's Yahoo Finance citing Shopify's own numbers. 29% growth year over year.
RachelOkay, that's a real number. That's not a rounding error.
Speaker 3Right, and volume like that breaks things, which is exactly why DSCP's Smart Fulfillment just launched a native integration built for Shopify specifically. Real-time inventory visibility, automatic order routing,
RachelSo
Speaker 3the whole thing, according to that same Yahoo Finance piece.
Rachelbasically they looked at Shopify's growth chart and went, yeah, somebody's going to need help shipping all that.
Speaker 3Pretty much. And simply Wall Street framed it well. They said operational execution now matters as much as traffic. You can drive a million visitors, but if the warehouse can't route orders fast, none of it converts to a repeat customer.
RachelOkay, but dumb question. Isn't that what fulfillment centers already do? Like, what's new here?
Speaker 3Ah, so it's less new tool, more one less browser tab. Basically. And that matters more than people think when you're doing volume. volume. Okay, and then there's the DoorDash thing too, right? That's the one that actually got my attention. Yeah, this rolled out a bit earlier.
MaxDoorDash built a native integration so U.S. brick-and-mortar Shopify merchants can sync their catalog and inventory and sell straight on the DoorDash marketplace, no separate system. Mass-market retailers covered it as a same-day delivery play for independent retailers. So a local shop can suddenly look like it's got Amazon-speed delivery? That's the pitch. Simply Wall St. called it deepening Shopify's spot as the infrastructure layer. Local stores but plugged into on-demand discovery and delivery. Okay, real question though, who's actually paying for fast because fast isn't free. Finally, a good question from you because everyone loves same day until they see the cost per order breakdown. Hey! I spent years staring at exactly this at Amazon and Walmart. Fast only gets cheap when you've got density—enough orders in a tight radius that one driver's route makes sense—a DoorDash courier doing three deliveries in the same zip code? Fine. One courier driving 40 minutes for a single candle order? That merchant is eating margin full stop.
RachelSo it's not really about the technology being available, it's about It's about whether your customers happen to live close together.
MaxExactly. Pick and pack costs, delivery costs, they don't shrink just because you flipped on an integration. Density is the actual lever, same reason grocery delivery only works in cities.
RachelSo congrats, you're fast now, also broke.
MaxIf you're not careful, yeah. Which is why I'd tell a midsize merchant, don't turn on same day for your whole catalog on day one. one.
RachelWhat do you test first, then?
MaxPick your highest density metro, run it on your best margin SKUs only, and actually track cost per delivered order against your normal shipping cost, not just did sales go up, did profit go up.
RachelBecause sales going up while margin bleeds out the back is just a slower way of losing money.
MaxRight. I've watched that exact movie. Looks great in a board deck, terrible three months later.
RachelMan, and this is the part that gets me. Amazon's whole moat was speed for like a decade and now that's becoming a plug-in? Something a five-person shop can bolt onto their Shopify store on a Tuesday?
MaxThat's the real shift here. The infrastructure gap between a giant retailer and a small one is closing fast, pun intended.
RachelNice.
MaxBut closing the shipping gap doesn't mean closing the trust gap. app, a shopper trusts Amazon's return process blind; they don't necessarily trust some new app the same way yet.
RachelWhich, speaking of trust in new apps...
Maxis basically the whole next story, yeah. Facebook building out seller trust tools, Michaels building an AI shopping assistant. Same instinct, smaller scale: platforms trying to keep sellers and shoppers from wandering off somewhere else.
RachelOK, flip the lens for a sec. Forget shipping speed. Let's talk about who you're actually buying from.
Speaker 3Ooh, good pivot. What'd you find?
RachelSo Meta just rolled out a standalone app called Seller, built for people who live on Facebook Marketplace. Matt Binder covered it Friday. It's basically a dashboard for managing listings, messaging buyers, tracking what's actually selling.
Speaker 3Wait, isn't that just Marketplace? Why a whole separate app?
RachelRight, that's what I thought, too. But Ivan Mehta... Mehta reported the same launch, and the real headline for me is the free verification system they bundled in.
Speaker 3Verification like ID checks for sellers?
RachelYeah, free badge basically saying this person's real. And I flag this because my neighbor sold a couch on Marketplace last year. Buyer ghosted after paying total mess.
Speaker 3Oh no!
RachelTotal nightmare. Free verification's a big signal. Trust is what Meta's actually selling here now.
Speaker 3That's fair. Marketplace's whole edge was always local, no fees, no friction, full of scams, none of that matters.
RachelExactly. No fees plus zero trust means nobody sticks around.
Speaker 3I mean... Does a free badge actually stop scams, or does it just look good on paper?
RachelBinder's piece didn't dig into fraud numbers, but tied to your real Facebook profile, it's harder to just vanish after a bad sale.
Speaker 3Mm-hmm. Better than nothing.
RachelBasically defending the moat, speaking of platforms defending territory, Michaels just launched an AI shopping assistant called Ask Mike.
Speaker 3Wait, the craft store Michaels?
RachelYep, Tatiana Walk-Morris reported it's built on Google's tech, and PYMNTS covered it too. The pitch is moving shoppers past keyword search into real personalized recommendations.
Speaker 3Like, I'm making a Halloween wreath, what do I need, instead of typing f- Fake leaves?
RachelExactly that. And my ROI brain's kicking in here. Craft retail has brutal basket complexity. You're buying a whole project, not one item.
Speaker 3Right. 15 little things for one Pinterest idea.
RachelSo if conversational search gets people to the full kit instead of one product, that's a real average order value play worth measuring in dollars.
Speaker 3Which ties back to Meta, weirdly. Both of these are about keeping people from leaving.
MaxLeaving.
RachelTotally. Meta's worried sellers churn to other marketplaces. Michaels is worried shoppers give up mid search and just go to Amazon. And that trust piece with Meta feels like it's about to matter a lot more this week.
MaxHow so?
RachelBecause verification and fraud are one thing when it's a couch sale gone wrong. It's a different scale when regulators start asking who's actually behind listings on the big marketplaces.
MaxOK, now I'm curious where you're going with this.
RachelWe're about to find out. The EU just hit AliExpress with a massive counterfeit fine, and there's a Senate probe sniffing around similar questions on Amazon.
Speaker 3This is going to get spicy.
RachelOkay, so from marketplace trust to actual money problems, Shein just posted a loss.
Speaker 3Yeah, their first quarterly loss. Jonathan Easton covered this for Retail Systems today. Tariffs and trade barriers finally caught up to the model.
RachelWait, the whole $5 t-shirt shipped from China thing? That math broke?
Speaker 3That's the model, yeah. Shein's entire edge was ultra low prices on tiny individual shipments. shipments. Once tariffs hit those parcels the margin just isn't there anymore.
RachelSo it's not a demand problem, it's a cost structure problem.
Speaker 3Exactly! And it's not just Shein. Roy Stephen Canivel reported for WWD that the EU fined AliExpress six hundred and thirty million dollars this week.
RachelSix hundred and thirty million dollars for what?
Speaker 3Failing to curb counterfeit listings. Canivel's piece says it's the largest fine under the under the EU's Digital Services Act since that law took effect back in 2023.
RachelSo Meta builds a verification badge, and across the ocean regulators are handing out nine-figure fines for not doing enough of exactly that.
Speaker 3Right, and it's not slowing down. Ina Steiner wrote,
Maxreported that Bloomberg talked to Amazon sellers who say a Senate committee is now probing possible Chinese manipulation in eCommerce.
RachelManipulation how? Like fake reviews or something bigger?
MaxSteiner's piece doesn't pin down one mechanism. Sellers are flagging pricing behavior, listing practices, stuff that smells coordinated. It's early, so treat it as a question the Senate is asking, not an answer yet.
RachelFair. Meanwhile, there's a plot twist, right? India just went the other direction.
MaxYeah, Reuters reported India relaxed its e-commerce investment rules for exports and called it a win for Amazon, specifically.
RachelSo one government's tightening the screws on Chinese platforms while another's loosening them for Amazon. Global trade's just vibes now, huh?
MaxIt's leverage, not vibes. Every country's deciding who they want winning their retail market. market.
RachelOkay, but I promised you wouldn't turn this into a policy lecture. So what do merchants actually do with this?
MaxLanded cost. That's the number to run this quarter, not just unit price, but duty, tariff class, and freight all in per SKU.
RachelWalk me through it quick.
MaxSay your product lands at $4 from a factory. Add the tariff bracket, add freight, and depending on the category, you could be looking at $6.65 landed. If you're still pricing off that original $4, you're bleeding margin every order.
RachelAnd most sellers aren't recalculating that regularly?
MaxMost set it once at launch and never touch it again. With tariff brackets shifting like they are right now, that's a 90-day habit, not a once-a-year spreadsheet.
RachelSo audit your top 10 SKUs real landed cost this month.
MaxAnd if a category's tariff class jumped, decide now whether... Oh, whether you eat it, pass it on or find a different country of origin, don't wait for a lost quarter like Shein's to find out!
RachelCheap and cheerful was the hold game for years; guess that game just got a lot more expensive. Okay, so if you take one thing from today, that AI shopping stat still gets me 99% of pages not even ready for a bot to even read them.
MaxAnd a bot that ghosts your cart without so much as a recovery email. No guilt. Nothing.
RachelBrutal. But hey, the traffic's coming whether merchants are ready or not.
MaxWhich is why I keep asking, does it convert? Or are we just building pipes for a channel that barely exists yet?
RachelFair question. Same one applies to same-day delivery, honestly.
MaxDensity, density, density. Say it with me.
RachelOkay, okay, I hear you. So, policy, platforms, AI agents, tariffs, busy week.
MaxBusy quarter, really. Go check your landed costs, people. Seriously.
RachelThanks so much for hanging out with us today.
MaxIf you liked it, subscribe, leave us a review, it actually helps.
RachelIt really does. And hey, tell a friend who's still arguing about button colors.
MaxThere's always one.
