Derek: And oh man, do we have a stacked one today.
Lauren: Okay, so get this. Jeff Dean just walked away from Google after twenty-seven years.
Derek: Twenty-seven years, and he didn't leave quietly. His pitch deck went viral this week. Fidji Simo also just left OpenAI.
Lauren: To go chase a cure for chronic disease, no less.
Derek: Two huge exits in one week.
Lauren: We're asking whether star power alone is worth what investors are paying for it.
Derek: Speaking of paying, wait till you hear what Cognition's reportedly worth now.
Lauren: Forty billion, and that's just one deal on today's list.
Derek: Nvidia and AMD are apparently funding their own customer. That's a choice.
Lauren: There's also a startup called Descartes reportedly closing in on a six billion dollar sale.
Derek: With SpaceX circling, apparently.
Lauren: We'll run the numbers and see which of these deals actually has a business underneath it.
Derek: Plus the hardware side, optical cables, chip etching startups, a hedge fund betting hundreds of millions on silicon.
Lauren: And by the end, AI agents carrying their own corporate credit cards.
Derek: What could go wrong?
Lauren: Right? So Derek, where do you wanna start? The exits or the money?
Derek: Let's start with Jeff Dean. That pitch deck alone is worth the conversation.
Lauren: Jeff Dean just walked out of Google after twenty-seven years. Employee number thirty, and he's gone.
Derek: Twenty-seven years, and he's not going quietly. He's taking a chunk of the senior AI research bench with him.
Lauren: To build what?
Derek: A startup called Discovery Loop. Brent D. Griffiths covered it for Business Insider. The pitch is using AI to speed up actual scientific discovery, not another chat product.
Lauren: Hmm. Okay, but what actually happened in that room when he told his team? Because that's not a resignation, that's an exodus.
Derek: Qz reported the same thing. Several senior researchers left alongside him. This is the guy behind MapReduce and the TensorFlow era. He's basically Google's infrastructure DNA walking out the door.
Lauren: Right, and that pedigree is exactly what makes me nervous as an operator.
Derek: Oh, you're gonna love this part.
Lauren: What?
Derek: Dean posted his actual pitch deck publicly. Abhinav Singh wrote it up for NDTVpeople. People called it wild because there's no product, no revenue, barely a paragraph.
Lauren: Shut up.
Derek: Basically his face and his resume.
Lauren: That's a nice deck. Show me the numbers. I sat in rooms where first-time founders needed eighteen months of cohort data for a tenth of whatever check he's raising.
Derek: Sure, but would you bet against the guy who scaled Google's search infrastructure?
Lauren: I wouldn't bet against him building something real eventually. I'd bet against pricing it on reputation before there's anything to point to.
Derek: Fair.
Lauren: And speaking of people cashing in reputation for a fresh start, Fidji Simo resurfaced too.
Derek: Right. She left OpenAI's leadership back in July.
Lauren: Fortune's Emily Forlini caught up with her this week. She's building Chronicle Bio now, working on chronic disease.
Derek: That's a real pivot. Model Lab to applied biology?
Lauren: It's a different kind of hard, though. At OpenAI, she had infinite compute, infinite talent pool, basically infinite runway. Now she's got wet lab partners, regulators, actual patients to answer to.
Derek: Yeah, that's the part nobody puts in the founder story.
Lauren: What breaks when you leave the mothership? Your compute access breaks, your internal data breaks, your hiring pipeline breaks overnight.
Derek: But Dean's not going in blind, though. If he already recruited people off Google's payroll, he solved half that problem before day one.
Lauren: Maybe. But solving the team problem isn't the same as solving whether anyone will pay for what you build.
Derek: Which is the question once you realize the deck was basically vibes and a resume.
Lauren: Vibes and a resume. And apparently, that's enough right now.
Derek: So what happens when somebody actually puts a dollar figure on vibes and a resume?
Lauren: Speaking of pricing something before it's proven, Cognition's reportedly in new funding talks at a forty billion dollar valuation.
Derek: Forty billion? For the Devin coding agent company?
Lauren: That's the number Bloomberg's reporting. And look, I've sat in rooms fighting over a ten million dollar bump. Forty billion means investors are pricing in revenue that doesn't exist yet.
Derek: Mm-hmm. Or they think Devin becomes the default way code gets written. That's a bet on the whole market, not this year's balance sheet.
Lauren: A multiple like that usually implies a few billion in eventual revenue. Does Devin have that path?
Derek: Nobody's saying yet. River AI just closed one point one billion, and Nvidia and AMD are both in that round.
Lauren: Wait, hold on. Aren't they also the ones selling River its chips?
Derek: Exactly. SiliconANGLE and Reuters both flagged the same detail this week. Your chip supplier is now also your investor.
Lauren: So Nvidia funds the company, the company buys Nvidia's GPUs, and the cash just loops back around?
Derek: They'd call it a flywheel.
Lauren: Call it whatever keeps the stock price up.
Derek: But it raises a real question. If your investor also sets your hardware bill, who's actually negotiating price?
Lauren: Nobody. That's the tell.
Derek: And chip makers aren't the only ones writing checks. Accel just closed three and a half billion for a global AI fund. Amit Chowdhry reported that one. Wow!
Lauren: Three and a half billion just sitting there waiting for a pitch deck?
Derek: Then there's Decart, Israeli startup reportedly closing in on a six billion dollar sale with SpaceX circling.
Lauren: SpaceX? Bidding on an AI startup?
Derek: Golan Hazani and Sophie Shulman reported Nvidia was close to a deal first before a bigger offer showed up. Amazon and Nebius are apparently in the mix too.
Lauren: Three buyers circling before revenue even exists. That's an auction dressed up as a valuation.
Derek: So run your test. Which of these has a business underneath it?
Lauren: River AI gets partial credit. Strategic investors who need the company to succeed because it buys their silicon. That's at least an aligned incentive. Cognition, show me paying customers, not a demo. Descartes, I don't know what anyone's buying yet.
Derek: Auctions don't need a product. They need scarcity.
Lauren: Which is a fancier way of saying nobody's checked the math.
Derek: Fair.
Lauren: I'm not saying the tech's fake. The money's just moving faster than anyone's confirming it works.
Derek: And whether the physical layer underneath any of this actually works is about to get very literal.
Lauren: Meaning?
Derek: Meaning someone just raised seven hundred million dollars to rip the copper wire out of data centers and replace it with light.
Lauren: Ah.
Derek: Flip that on its head. Forget valuations. Let's talk what's underneath it.
Lauren: You're really doing plumbing metaphors now?
Derek: Kinda literally. The Wall Street Journal reported a startup just raised seven hundred million dollars to rip copper wire out of data centers and replace it with light.
Lauren: Optical instead of electrical. Why is that the fix?
Derek: Because copper heats up and hits a ceiling on how many bits it can push. Light doesn't choke the same way.
Lauren: Mm-hmm. So the bottleneck in AI isn't the chip, it's the cable between the chips.
Derek: Exactly. Fastest GPU on the planet waiting on a wire is just an expensive space heater.
Lauren: Seven hundred million dollars for cables?
Derek: For the nervous system of these buildings, yeah, at the scale they're running now.
Lauren: Who's writing that check expecting it back?
Derek: The Journal doesn't name every backer, but it's the same money chasing every AI shovel right now.
Lauren: Fine. At least a wire is a wire. The Taalas thing is weirder.
Derek: Oh, this is the good one. AMD just bought a startup called Taalas that burns the model straight into the chip.
Lauren: Burns it in physically.
Derek: Forbes and Yahoo Finance both covered it. Taalas etches the model's weights right into the silicon instead of loading software onto a general chip.
Lauren: For the non-engineers, what's the actual trade there?
Derek: Swiss Army knife versus a scalpel. The knife does everything okay. The scalpel does one thing insanely well and nothing else.
Lauren: So you lose flexibility.
Derek: Completely gone. New model version comes out, you're not updating software, you're buying new hardware.
Lauren: So the chip's disposable.
Derek: Basically, but you get speed a general chip can't touch.
Lauren: And AMD wants that because...?
Derek: Because inference is the whole game now. Training happens once. Inference runs forever. Every query, every user.
Lauren: Okay, I follow that. Now, Situational Awareness, that name alone unsettles me.
Derek: Chuckling. It's Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI hedge fund. Qz.com reported four hundred million dollars into a chip startup called Source Foundry. And Yahoo Finance Canada had it at five hundred million.
Lauren: Numbers don't quite match, but either way, a research fund is writing
Derek: checks that size into chip manufacturing. A hedge fund funding a fab.

Lauren: So everyone's just funding their own future customers this year.
Derek: Pretty much the whole industry right now.
Lauren: But who's actually paying for any of this once it's built?
Derek: Nobody's answered that yet. The light, the etched chips, the fab money, it's plumbing for something that has to run on top of it.
Lauren: Which is?
Derek: Agents. Software doing actual work constantly at scale.
Lauren: So we built the world's fastest highway, and nobody's confirmed anyone's driving on it yet.
Derek: That's next.
Lauren: Okay, quick pivot. Your AI agent might have its own corporate card now.
Derek: Wait, actual spending power?
Lauren: Ana Maria Constantin covered this for the Next Web. OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft, Cursor, and Vercel just agreed on one shared standard called Agent Plugins. So an extension works across ChatGPT, Copilot, all of it.
Derek: So no more building five versions of the same tool for five different bots.
Lauren: Right.
Derek: Mm-hmm.
Lauren: It's boring, but that's probably the most important thing that happened in agents this week.
Derek: Boring is underrated. Boring is what lets Fast Company report startups are actually handing these agents corporate credit cards.
Lauren: Wait, wait. The agent just buys things?
Derek: Books the vendor, pays the invoice, and Ron Patel at Startup Fortune found some of these companies cutting customer support headcounts because agents are closing routine tickets for eighty percent less.
Lauren: Eighty percent. That's basically a layoff memo with extra steps.
Derek: Which is exactly why Sarah Perez's TechCrunch piece caught my eye. Cloudflare just launched Kitesurf, a browser built to run agents, skipping the human interface.
Lauren: A browser nobody's supposed to look at?
Derek: Right. No tabs, no bookmarks bar. Cloudflare says it uses less computing power than Chromium because it's not rendering anything for a human's eyes.
Lauren: Okay, but my actual question after everything we just covered, the light speed cables, the hardwired chips, the hedge fund betting on furnaces.
Derek: This is the demand all of that's supposed to feed.
Lauren: Right. If the agents with credit cards and the ticket savings are the payload, the infrastructure math actually works.
Derek: And then there's the hardware. Lucas Ropeks at TechCrunch is reporting OpenAI's building a smart speaker retailing somewhere between three hundred and four hundred dollars.
Lauren: A speaker? After a joint industry standard and browsers built for robots, OpenAI's answer is a speaker?
Derek: Is it a Trojan horse for agents living in your kitchen, or is it just OpenAI chasing Alexa money?
Lauren: I don't know. Putting a chat model in a box didn't work great for anyone else who's tried it.
Derek: True, but if the standard actually holds, that box talks to your calendar, your bank, your Cursor agent, all through the same infrastructure we just spent twenty minutes describing.
Lauren: So the seven hundred million dollar cable and OpenAI's speaker are basically coworkers.
Derek: Never thought I'd say that sentence.
Lauren: The real test is whether that speaker on your counter can actually book the flight without me watching over its shoulder.
Derek: We'll find out about three hundred dollars at a time.
Lauren: So if there's one thing to take from today, it's this: The money's flowing everywhere, but not every deal has a real business under it yet.
Derek: Right. Dean walking away from twenty-seven years at Google to bet on himself, that's the story that stuck with me.
Lauren: Chuckling. Meanwhile, I'm still stuck on that pitch deck. Show me the numbers, people.
