In this episode, Doug prototypes podcast production. In other words, he goes live from the trail, recording the episode as he ascended Midnight Mine to the top of Aspen Mountain. While Doug may have been on a svelte race rig, Nicolette rode her trusted bikepacking hardtail. (You decide who had the higher heart rate.) Nicolette has skied (with some walking) the length of the Colorado Trail, and is a 3x winner of the Colorado Trail Race (it's high-speed bikepacking folks). You can read up on her latest victory on her blog . She's pretty much a crusher. On Episode 139 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The Doug and Randy banter: reflecting on the Colorado Trail. Scouting the Colorado Trail-the early adventures. A 2022 ski traverse—out for 27 days... No powder to be found. The Colorado Trail on a bike. Bringing the bikepacking experience to racing strategy. While the West experiences hot temps and, in many locales, high AQIs, Randy and Doug make the best of it as they ramble on about some mountain biking highlights. Randy had his eyes opened in Bend, Oregon (of course he did), while Doug begins his pre-Leadville 100 taper with some uptempo riding on the local trails. We're a week or so out from Leadville, which means Doug makes his pick for the win, and the acclimating to Leadville's thin air begins. Wait no longer for Doug's download from the Scott Sports dealer fair in Switzerland. Think lovely scenery, Edelweiss flowers, and an array of carbon-fiber two-wheeled eye candy. Yup, you'll hear about Doug's mighty test run on the Lenzerheide World Cup MTB circuit and some waxing about e-MTB bikes and why, perhaps, they should be on a trail near you. Needless to say, Doug and Randy discuss mountain culture, how light a mountain bike can go, and the fact that Doug is over the international time-zone beatdown, and how he yearns for the comfort of bumping around Colorado in a Van. Rain, shine, roots, and rocks, ups and downs, Doug provides the blow-by-blow of his recent escapades at the BC Bike Race. The race, a seven-stage affair, allowed the crew from Carbondale to expand their wings on what amounted to some rather technical riding. But the episode wouldn't be complete without a dive into gear trends and where they're headed. On Episode 136 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The Denver store moves. On bike shuttles: &^%$ that! There's no hate, only love, in this Olympics-themed episode. Well, to be clear, and to backtrack a bit, maybe just a bit of disdain. So...skimo. Yes, it was. Despite our deep respect for Anna Gibson and Cam Smith (Smith is a CB local!), the powers-that-be neutered what skimo (it is skimo, right?) can be. Maybe what we need is some more spice, as in more longform mo', as in mountaineering. Which means Doug and Randy go totally deep on their feelings about the Olympics, the multi-ringed circus, and moving the skimo scene forward as the 2030 Winter Olympics loom on the horizon. And speaking of the Olympics and local games, Doug provides an update on the Power of Four and the Gothic Mountain Tour. On Episode 134 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The hot takes begin, and Randy is pumped. Big quads (not the Quad God). Anna and Cam came in for a solid 4th place. The mixed relay blow-by-blow. A transition zone snafu by Spain. First exposure to the ski in the mo. The technical aspects of the racing and the next step for an Olympic ski-mountaineering race. Hop scotch across the North Atlantic, and it's off to Norway's Lyngen Alps with the RAB crew. In this episode, we speak with Norway's Thea Røhme and Krister Kopala and get the lowdown on how their partnership works in high- and low-stress environments. Røhme is a charger on skis and is currently working toward her IFMGA certification, while Kopala is a highly regarded splitboard mountaineer who is making quite a stir on YouTube with his high-speed riding in some dicey situations. (You can find Kopala's YouTube here, and he is a regular over on Nikolai Shirmer's channel .) Doug and Manaaseh were in Norway for a RAB event where Kopala and Røhme, both RAB athletes, screened their upcoming film, New Terrain, which will be released this summer. The film explores the duo's relationship, their ascents and descents, and how they make it all work out. On Episode 133 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The good life in Norway's Lyngen Alps. The sometimes delicate art of communicating with your partner. Thea may build better anchors than Kristor. Not making a plan. Making a life and building out professional riding projects. Sourdough bread... why was it flat? The crux of New Lines . Heads up, North America, Kristor will spend two months seeking out fine snow in the States and Mammoth. He'll have his hardboots. We begin this episode with an uptick of snow in the high hills of Colorado. Which, to no one's surprise, is glitter to Randy and Doug. There's the usual banter, where Doug swears off Zone 2 training, and they introduce the two guest hosts for this "ins & outs" episode. And...our guests are Manasseh Franklin and Rachel Beck, who take over the podcast for a much-needed episode dedicated to what is in and what is out for 2026. Basically, what is out, according to our two hosts, is this: don't be a douche on the skintrack. No better words have been spoken. Be kind. Be mellow. Be dedicated to good craft. And...don't be mean out there, this should be fun. Othrwise listen in to some wisdom from Manasseh and Rachel and soak in the good word. But that's not the whole journay in this episode that literally goes tits deep. Randy interviews Stephanie Villavicencio, founder of the Breast Cancer awareness non-profit, Tits Deep for Breast Cancer . It's a debate that is still settling in the places Doug and Randy call home. The banter about bikes evolves into the rarefied realm of UCI World Champs and the upcoming World Cup on U.S. soil, based in Lake Placid. Outside of the Roaring Fork Valley, you might know of John Gaston as that dude from out of town who came into your local scene, under the radar, and cleaned up. He's been doing as much in the mountain bike and skimo racing scenes for well over a decade at all levels of sport. Sufferfest accolades include two podiums at the Leadville 100 and skimo stats that make the head spin: 13 skimo national championships and a most recent highlight placing 21st in the ISMF World Champs vertical race. There are opinions on the skimo scene and gravel, as well as which bike you should or shouldn't take on your next gravel ride. With a family trip planned to Chilean Patagonia, our resident fun hog, Doug, sheds light on the excellence and adventure of the region's freeform and manicured mountain bike riding. There's fjords and alpine and all the in-between to take in. But really, you came for the skiing or the potential for skiing. Although it's high summer in Chile, Doug takes a few strolls in the saddle and convinces himself that his next ski adventure should include wrangling horses, packing them up with a not-so-light load, and heading for the hills for some turn-making. Horse packing may be Doug's new thing, CCBC will not be carrying horse and tackle supplies anytime soon. On Episode 123 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Off to Patagonia, not Arizona.
