When Alessandra’s newborn daughter refused to breastfeed on one side, she tried everything to help her latch. A lump she thought was a blocked milk duct was later diagnosed as stage 3 breast cancer. She was 38, with a toddler and a five-month-old baby. In this episode of Shades of Pink, Alessandra joins Alice and Lauren to share her experience of chemotherapy, motherhood, and the family who supported her through treatment. She also opens up about moving from Italy to Dubai just ten days after finishing radiation, starting her business, Autentica X, and finally making time for the things she had always put off, including an electric guitar and salsa lessons. A conversation about knowing your body, getting changes checked, and finding yourself again after cancer. Subscribe to Shades of Pink for more conversations about breast cancer, diagnosis, life, challenges, humour, and hope. 💗 Every shade of pink tells a different story. 🩷🎙️ Shades of Pink is a Dubai-based breast cancer podcast hosted by Lauren O’Connell and Alice Lovell, two friends matchmade by their oncologist. Welcome to Episode 2 of Shades of Pink, a breast cancer podcast based in Dubai, UAE, hosted by breast cancer survivors Lauren O'Connell and Alice Lovell. In Life After Breast Cancer, we're joined by Nicola, a Dubai-based entrepreneur, mother of two and breast cancer survivor approaching an incredible 10 years since her diagnosis. Nicola's story begins with discovering a breast lump shortly after having her second child. What she initially thought might be hormonal changes turned into a stage 2, hormone-positive breast cancer diagnosis. She received the devastating news while on a cruise celebrating her 40th birthday. In this emotional, honest and sometimes surprisingly funny conversation, Nicola takes us through her mastectomy, lymph node removal, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and the challenges of navigating breast cancer while raising two young children. We also talk about one of the most emotional parts of cancer treatment: losing your hair. As a director of Dubai's McGettigan's hospitality business and involved with MANE Salon, Nicola shares why she helped create a private, supportive space at MANE for women experiencing hair loss during chemotherapy. Alice also reveals how that very space became an important part of her own breast cancer journey, bringing their stories together in an unexpected way. In Episode 2, we discuss: - Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis as a young mother - Stage 2 hormone-positive breast cancer - Mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatment - Hair loss, cold capping, wigs and shaving your head - How breast cancer affects children, marriage and family life - Chemotherapy-induced menopause and life after treatment - Returning to work and rebuilding confidence after cancer - The importance of friendship, community and the pink sisterhood - Fear of recurrence and approaching 10 years of breast cancer survivorship - Why trusting your medical team and advocating for yourself matters Through tears, laughter and a few unexpected stories, Nicola reminds us that life after breast cancer can be full of happiness, purpose and possibility, even when the experience changes you forever. Hosted by Lauren O'Connell, Beauty Editor of Cosmopolitan Middle East and founder of 3 of Cups, and Alice Lovell, Director of Partnerships at The Wall Street Journal, Shades of Pink shares the different experiences of women and men navigating breast cancer.
