Stay Current: European Seas is a podcast by Science Crunchers ( www.sciencecrunchers.com ). Horizon Europe projects are finding new ways to help protect European seas, but results, tools, datasets and policy recommendations are scattered across papers, project sites, reports and newsletters, and keeping up takes time. Our team tracks the latest research, picks what matters and fact-checks it. Every two weeks, you get a new episode on one key development: what changed, what the evidence says and why it matters for ocean research, policy and practice. Sources are linked, so you can dig into the original material. Episodes are made with AI tools and AI-generated voices. Made for anyone working in European marine and environmental topics, and in particular in the intersection of science, policy and practice. Stay tuned, stay current. https://sciencecrunchers.com/stay-current-podcast/

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! How well do we know the environmental status of Europe’s seas? And can we compare it across regions? In this episode, we look at a study by Nikolaou, Borja and Katsanevakis (2025), published in Conservation Letters . The study was developed within GES4SEAS (grant agreement No 101059877), a Horizon Europe project coordinated by AZTI that looks at how multiple human pressures combine to affect marine ecosystems. The authors combined official assessment data from across Europe into a single, comparable picture. Their main finding is that most regions are still far from Good Environmental Status. We talk about why, where the main monitoring and knowledge gaps are, and what this means for marine policy in Europe. Stay tuned, Stay current. Sources Nikolaou, A., Borja, A., & Katsanevakis, S.
