Every police officer begins their journey with learning, preparation, and development. In this episode, we go behind the scenes at Garnerville, the PSNI Police College, to explore how student officers and serving colleagues develop the knowledge, skills, and judgement required for modern policing. Guests discuss the realities of training, the importance of communication, decision-making, and professionalism, and what to expect when you begin a career serving the public. The episode also considers how learning continues throughout a policing career, from initial training to specialist roles and leadership development.
What does it mean for the Police Service of Northern Ireland to reflect the communities it serves? In this episode, we speak with colleagues and representatives from staff associations and networks about representativeness in policing: why it matters, how it has changed over the past 25 years, and the importance of attracting, supporting and retaining people from every background. The conversation explores community confidence, inclusion, career opportunities and the shared role that policing, communities and leaders can play in encouraging the next generation of officers and staff.
