VHiStory - A VHS Podcast

It's the Halloween Special! How can you have a Halloween special though, when you've done 7/9 episodes about horror anyway? Listen and find out! I'm joined by the amazing Scott from ColdBrewsandMovieReviews to talk John Carpenters 1980 masterpiece The Fog. We discuss everything from Adrienne Barbeau, John Carpenter, Tom Atkins (chubby according to Scott!), living in America, UK vs US coastal upbringings, ice cream VHS vans, scouse words for plastic and more. Scott is on Instagram at @coldbrews_and_moviereviews so if you're not following, get on it! Make sure you like, subscribe, review and get in touch! I'd love to hear from you at james@vhistory.co.uk or give us a follow @vhistorypod @vhistoryjam

What can you never have too much of? Friday the 13th films. Join me back at Crystal Lake with one of the most passionate F13th fans I know, Sarinah. We're talking Jason Voorhees love, Kane Hodder love, John Carl Buechler love, Lar Park Lincoln love... basically just lots of love for this criminally underrated slasher classic. It's so much more than just Carrie v Jason! You can find Sarinah on Twitter and Instagram @makehorrorslashagain , so make sure you're following! "Alexa, play How Soon is Now by Power of Three" I am guilty of sleeping on this film for too long. Forget the cover and your perception of what it's going to be... this might be one of the best witch films of all time. I was joined by the amazing Bec of ThisGirlLovesHorror fame on Instagram and half of the fantastic The Girl and The Gay Podcast to discuss everything 90s, banging soundtracks, female empowerment, a surprisingly dark story and Skeet Ulrich not being hot in this. Get your cauldrons bubbling and join us for a perfect Halloween watch! Make sure you like, subscribe, review and get in touch! Oh it's beginning to look a lot like creepy masks, modern day paganism and alcoholic doctors... that's right it's time for the BEST Halloween film... Season of the Witch! We're talking Tom Atkins, Tommy Lee Wallace, fan negativity and what could have been horror anthologies. This week I'm joined by the imperious Andrew Grevas, author of 2025's Horror in Haddonfield to talk about the film that nearly broke a franchise. Andrew's insight is both fascinating and insightful so I was delighted he joined me for this deep dive conversation. Make sure you like, subscribe, review and get in touch! IT'S OCTOBER!! At last the full scary season commences! This week I'm taking you back to 1994 and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V. I adore The Simpsons in general but there's a special place in my heart for the Treehouse of Horror episodes. Endlessly quotable, gateway horror and genuinely hilarious. It's a must every year to watch at least a few episodes! I'm also talking Halloween events, some physical media watches and my full Halloween watchlist for 2026, playing along with the #31daysofhorror challenge! As always, let me know what you're watching and let's share the horror love! All my links! Letterboxd List VHiStory

It's another horror episode (I'll fight anyone who disagrees!) and this week I'm talking about Mr Toad and Ichabod Crane. If you've not seen this underrated banger, make sure to check it out...then come straight back to listen! Expect Mary Blair appreciation & love, hero worship of J. Thadeus Toad Esq, genuine fear and terror of the Headless Horseman, Disney's obsession with themselves and a tease of the Halloween schedule. Make sure you like, subscribe, review and get in touch! I'd love to hear from you at james@vhistory.co.uk or give us a follow @vhistorypod @vhistoryjam

FINALLY we're moving into a horror film this week! What better place to start than Crystal Lake and... not Jason Voorhees?! Joining me this week is the fantastic Janine from Graeae Horror. We talk everything from horror origins, shitting couples, Roy the paramedic, questionable safeguarding and Shared Sight Film Festival! I have to apologise for this first video podcast having the first 20 minutes without video because...I'm a luddite and didn't set it up properly. Make sure to check out https://strangelittleobsessions.co.uk/ for all the info and tickets! Also, make sure you like, subscribe, review and get in touch! If you know... you know. This is a BAD film. As punishment for past misdeeds, I roped my younger brother in as my first guest, subjecting him to one of the most disastrous direct to video films of all time. I'd covered this as the first film on the VHiStory blog so it would have been wrong not to revisit this disasterpiece. It's freely available on YouTube to watch but... you're not actually thinking of watching it?...right?

What better way to start VHiStory than jumping back to 1997 and Joel Schumacher's critically savaged Batman & Robin. I'm talking high camp with Posion Ivy, horrendous "disguises", awful dialogue but... there's something there with this one! Hope you enjoy and remember, rewind, rewatch and buy physical!
