In this episode of The Dental Assistant Study Podcast, we explore the foundations of general dentistry and the different types of care commonly provided in a dental practice. We’ll discuss preventive, restorative, diagnostic, and routine dental procedures, while highlighting the important role dental assistants play in supporting the dentist, preparing the operatory, assisting with procedures, and providing patient care.
In this episode of The Dental Assistant Study Podcast, we explore the common materials used in restorative and esthetic dentistry. We’ll discuss their basic properties, indications, advantages, and the dental assistant’s role in preparing, handling, and assisting with these materials.
In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) and their connection to infection prevention in the dental office. We’ll explore how waterlines can become contaminated, what biofilm is and why it can develop inside dental unit tubing, and why maintaining appropriate water quality is an important part of safe dental practice. We’ll also discuss routine maintenance, waterline treatment, monitoring, and the dental assistant’s role in following proper procedures and manufacturer recommendations. This episode connects microbiology and infection prevention to something dental assistants encounter every day in the operatory, the water that flows through the dental unit.
We’re turning our attention to something you may not think about every day in the dental operatory: dental unit waterlines, or DUWLs. These narrow tubes deliver water to dental handpieces, air-water syringes, ultrasonic scalers, and other equipment. Because of their design and the conditions within the waterline, microorganisms can accumulate and form biofilm, making proper waterline management an important part of infection prevention and safe dental practice. In this episode, we’ll explore how dental unit waterlines become contaminated, what biofilm is, why water quality matters, and the practices used to maintain and manage DUWLs. We’ll also connect the topic to the dental assistant’s role in maintaining a safe clinical environment and following the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable infection-prevention guidelines.
In today’s episode, we’re diving into an essential part of dental assisting: the principles and techniques of instrument processing and sterilization. We’ll walk through the instrument-processing cycle, from the safe handling and transportation of contaminated instruments through cleaning, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage, and monitoring. We’ll also discuss the importance of following the correct procedures for different types of instruments and understanding the difference between cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.
Welcome back to The Dental Assistant Study Podcast! In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at the Principles and Techniques of Disinfection and why proper disinfection is such an important part of infection prevention in the dental office. We’ll explore the different types of disinfectants, the importance of following the appropriate contact time, and the differences between cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization. We’ll also discuss the proper approach to disinfecting operatory surfaces, caring for dental instruments, and maintaining safe practices throughout the clinical environment.
In today’s episode, we’re diving into one of the most important topics in dental assisting: Disease Transmission and Infection Prevention. Every day in the dental office, dental professionals work closely with patients, saliva, blood, instruments, surfaces, and aerosols. Understanding how diseases can be transmitted and, more importantly, how we can prevent that transmission is essential for protecting patients, dental assistants, dentists, hygienists, and the entire dental team. We’ll break down the chain of infection, explore the different ways microorganisms can spread, and discuss the role of standard precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, instrument processing, sterilization, disinfection, and environmental infection control. We’ll also connect these concepts to the situations you encounter in the dental office so you can understand not just what infection-control procedures are required, but why they matter.
In this episode of The Dental Assistant Study Podcast, we break down the fundamentals of microbiology and explore how microorganisms relate to oral health and dental practice. We’ll discuss the different types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi—and explore the difference between the normal oral flora and pathogenic microorganisms. We’ll also look at how microorganisms contribute to biofilm and plaque formation and their role in common oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Finally, we’ll connect microbiology to the dental office by discussing the importance of infection prevention, infection control, and sterilization.
In this episode of Dental Decoded, we break down the causes of periodontal disease and explore the important role of bacterial plaque and dental calculus in its development. We’ll also examine the connection between periodontal disease and systemic health, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and low birth weight.
