Learn how to position your bed and use your auspicious directions for better Bedroom Feng Shui. Discover how your Life Gua can help you choose a more supportive sleeping direction. There are certain rules when it comes to bedrooms and beds and where to place them for a good nights sleep. TRANSCRIPT So in this episode I'm going to talk about the things to avoid having in your bedroom and the best areas in your bedroom to place your bed. Lets start with what to avoid. Check the ceiling height of your bedroom… is it sloped? Try not to place your bed under the lowest part of the ceiling as will suppress the energy here Make sure you don’t have shelves or cupboards directly above your head when you are in bed Or any exposed beams, ceiling fans or a heavy light fitting can lead to headaches, tension or even long term health problems Having a toilet or bathroom on the other side of the bedroom wall that your bed is against could cause you to have a disturbed sleep as the water pipes can disrupt the energy in the area. Are there any corners, wall edges or furniture that are pointing directly towards you when in bed? This can create negative Chi or Sha Chi aimed directly at you creating ill health. A lot of feng shui practitioners prefer a bed that doesn’t have any storage underneath it, so that the Chi can circulate freely, under and around the bed. This can be a little impractical if storage is limited so just make sure that it is organised and stored appropriately. Having mirrors in your bedroom will make your room extremely yang, lots of energy, as mirrors reflect light causing you to have a disturbed sleep. You can have a mirror in your bedroom but would advise not to have a wall of mirrors facing your bed, and make sure that it is covered over at night with a throw or blanket. Having a water feature or an aquarium in your bedroom is not a good idea when it comes to feng shui but only if it is noisy and disturbing your sleep. A bowl of still water placed in the bedroom as an elemental cure is fine but water in period 9 should only be placed in certain areas. The north, east southeast and southwest. Are your feet or your head facing the bedroom door when you are in bed? this is known as the ‘death position’. It sounds awful but as the yang Chi enters the room, the first thing it will reach will be you, causing a disrupted sleep. The last thing that you need to avoid or be aware of, at least are the annual flying stars. These change each year and ‘fly’ into different areas of your home. If you have a negative star such as the 5 yellow star which can cause disruption if disturbed or the star 3, the argument star in your bedroom then this could be problematic. Understanding where they are each year and knowing the ‘cures’ you can put in place will really help you having a good year rather than a bad year. I have done 2 episodes dedicated to the annual flying stars of 2026, so it may be worth giving them a listen So lets talk about your actual bed now… Ideally it should be placed in the farthest corner of the bedroom so that the Chi or energy coming into the bedroom will be less yang and more yin by the time it reaches your bed. Which is what you want for a good, restful nights sleep. Your bed needs to be behind a solid wall and not a window, if possible. I know that it can be difficult to do sometimes, so if you have to then make sure you have a heavy curtain or blind drawn at night, to have that extra support. Never place your bed ‘floating’ in the middle of the bedroom, this will create unstable energy and uncertainty. Making sure that you are using one of your 4 auspicious directions to sleep in will help to improve the quality of your sleep giving you a restful night and also help to rejuvenate and restore the body too. Once you know your 4 auspicious directions you can choose from the wellness and recovery direction, love and relationships direction, growth and alignment direction or the wealth and success direction. I would suggest not choosing the wealth and success direction as your first choice for sleeping as you will constantly be thinking about work, projects and ideas regarding work or your business and you will never be able to switch off when you go to bed. Just before the last piece of advice about your bedroom, I want to tell you about In the free feng shui beginners kit, I have created 5 modules showing you how to map your home using a compass, your floor plan and a downloadable Bagua map. When people think about attracting wealth with Feng Shui, one of the first things they often ask is where to place a wealth bowl. But before adding any symbolic enhancements to your home, it's worth understanding something more important — where are your wealth areas? In traditional Feng Shui, there isn't necessarily just one corner of your home that represents wealth. Your home's compass orientation, the Southeast sector and even your personal Life Gua can all play a role in understanding the areas associated with prosperity and success. Today I’m going to talk about one of the most googled questions ever. Where do I place my wealth bowl? There are so many different takes on this and I'll explain it the best I can and give you my opinion and I'll try not to overwhelm you with too much information. If you are unsure about the compass directions in your home and how to map out your floor plan then join my free feng shui beginners kit that will guide you step-by-step from compass readings, mapping your home using the downloadable 24 mountain compass and explains how to overlay the Bagua map onto your floor plan. There's even an extra bonus of how to work out your life gua number and gives you your four auspicious directions and your four challenging directions. Check the link in the show notes for details. So you may have heard of a feng shui method that uses a Bagua map to find the wealth area of your home for a wealth bowl. This uses a Bagua map without using compass directions so when the map is used, your front door will always be either in the career, knowledge or benefactor areas of the home and the furthest back left corner of your home is the wealth corner. Personally I prefer to know the compass directions of my home as I like to be aware of how the annual Flying Stars can affect the energies of your home each year. So if you were going to activate the left corner of your home, it might be an area that has quite a nasty star in it, that needs to be kept quiet that year, so I prefer not to use that type of method. I like to use the Bagua map that has the directions on it so you can actually see which areas of your home are linked to the areas of your life such as health, relationships, career or wealth. The Southeast is related to money and income levels; it's all to do with growth and wealth. The element in the Southeast is the wood element so using living plants, green and healthy ones with rounded leaves rather than a cactus or anything like that. Using these plants in the Southeast will help to energize the wood element and the energy in this area and help to attract money and also increase income levels in your home. You could also use a water element here too as in the five elements productive cycle, water produces wood. In the Southeast area, I use a tall, clear vase filled with water and three pieces of bamboo so I have both the growth element of wood with the bamboo and the water element that is placed in the vase. So that's what I do in the Southeast of my home. What I definitely would avoid in the Southeast is the fire element, as we're looking at the five elements and how they interact with each other. So with the Southeast being the wood element, you want to avoid a fire element in this area as obviously fire weakens wood with the controlling five element cycle. So no candles, fires, wood burners or stoves in this area and if you do have a stove or oven in the Southeast area of your home, try not to use it too much if possible. Metal items in the Southeast are viewed as part of the five elements controlling cycle, as metal is seen to chop wood down. So that would stop the growth of wood, so items such as decorative swords or knives in the Southeast, even if they're just displayed, could be a problem. You could also look at your personal wealth and success direction, your Life Gua is calculated using your birth year and gender and you can use the wealth and success direction when you are sitting at your desk either at work or at home. Use your compass to make sure that you are facing the direction when you are actually sitting at the desk. Not where your desk is pointing or the area of your room that the desk is in, it's where you are actually facing when you're sitting at your desk. So you can use your compass when you sit at the desk to double check that you're facing your personal wealth and success direction. Also check the area of your wealth and success direction in your home. Check whether there's any negative features there because that could be affecting this area of your life. Could this area be improved? Each day, could you open a window or a door even just for five minutes, just to refresh the Chi or energy in this area. Also could you move your home office into this area? That would improve your wealth and success. If you have an office at work, know the wealth and success area and face this direction or your other three auspicious directions. Another area of Feng Shui is the Flying Stars. Your home has its own natal Flying Star chart which maps out areas of your home that can be prosperous, if activated. There are certain things to consider when using the Flying Star method which makes it even more powerful. Making sure that you're using the correct Flying Star chart for your home is the key to this formula, knowing the date that you actually moved into your home and also understanding the relevance of Period 9, that we are in at the moment, The most important stars to look for when you've plotted your Flying Star chart are 9,1,2 and 4 and knowing their location in your home and whether you're able to activate them or not. It might seem quite overwhelming at first but once you know where they are in your home and you can activate them, the whole household will benefit and that will last for period 9 until 2043. These stars will always be relevant until 2043, so it's star 9, star 1, star 2 and star 4, after that when period 1 starts, all the numbers change again. But for this time, these are the prosperous stars that will help to improve your wealth and also the health of your whole household. This week is about how to study smarter with Feng Shui. Check if there's anything negative pointing towards the Northeast and check for any clutter, anything lying around that needs to be put away, any old newspapers or magazines that can be recycled. Look at the area and see if it's clean and maintained, or does it need a really good deep clean and is there anything that needs repairing or replacing? Make sure that this area is the best it can be, so it's easy for Chi to flow from outside into your home. Have a look at whether there's a door or a window in the Northeast area that you'll be able to open, that will connect the outside, coming into your home so if you have a door or a window make sure that it opens easily, it's not blocked and it's not broken. The door or the window needs to open easily so it's not a struggle to open each day even if it's just for five minutes just to refresh the air in the home and to give a little extra boost of revitalizing the Chi. The best way to think of Chi is as water flowing along the river. It isn't going to flow down as easily with obstacles in the way. What you are aiming for is for the river/chi to run smoothly along into your home. So it flows around your home with no obstructions. So if you're unsure about where the Northeast is in your home, the first thing you need is to have a compass, so you'll either have one on your smart phone or a navigation compass. You'll need a floor plan of your home, if you've got two levels in your home you need both levels. Stand in the doorway of your home make sure you're looking outward and then take a compass reading and that's your starting point to map out your home with the compass directions. So when we were talking about the Northeast being the area for knowledge and studying, the element for the Northeast is earth, so it's really important to be able to enhance this area with a pure element. You can use colours, I know a lot of people that are into the different colours in Feng Shui so earth would be browns, oranges and yellows. I just think that colours have the lowest vibration,so you're really looking for a pure element like fire or plants. Pure earth in the Northeast can be ceramics, pottery, earthenware and also crystals. You could also use a fire element as fire creates earth. As in the five elements productive cycle, when you have a fire and eventually it burns down into ash that creates earth and that's part of the productive cycle. Also in the Northeast check to see if there is a bathroom or a toilet here as this could cause problems with either education or examination luck because there is an excess of water in this area, you need to place a plant in the bathroom or the toilet area and that will help you soak up any excess water in the Northeast. So now we've looked at the Northeast area of the home. Now we're going to look at where your child's bedroom is and where they're going to study. So the first thing to look at in a child's bedroom is if there's any clutter or not. Just remember the flow of Chi is really important especially around the windows so make sure that they are easy to open each day because on a window ledge there can be a lot of clutter and bits and bobs so just make sure that it's clear. It can have a few little bits on but it needs to be easy to open even if it's just for five minutes a day, just to get that airflow, the Chi revitalized in the area in your child's bedroom. So try to create a room that's easy to keep clean and organize and one that has really good storage solutions that work not just for you but for your child, so make sure that your child has an input into the best way of storage for toys, Lego or clothes that need to be washed. Just some good storage solutions that work and are easy to put into practice. One of the less known Feng Shui systems that I love to use is called the Eight Mansions System. Part of the system is to calculate an individual's Gua number or life star number and it gives you four auspicious directions and four challenging directions. So the main one that we're looking at is the Wealth and Success direction and this would be perfect for a study desk, as it helps to support focus, motivation and momentum. The other three directions are just as good but ideally the Wealth and Success direction is the best one to go for. So when you are sitting at the desk, you need to make sure that you are facing the direction that's best for you, not where the desk actually is in the bedroom. It's the direction when you're facing forward, sitting at the desk and looking forward. It's the direction you are facing and that needs to be one of your four auspicious directions. You could place a desk in the command position but it's quite difficult to do so in a bedroom as it's mainly used in an office situation, such as corporate offices. Make sure that the desk isn't under an exposed beam as this will create a feeling of constant pressure and burden. Avoid sitting with your back to the door as this can lead to feeling a bit uneasy and lack of control just because you're not sure who's going to enter the room or if you haven't heard someone's entering the room and you'll get a fright. So the best thing to do, is to place something that makes some noise on the door when it's opened so maybe bells or something like that, so any visitors that do come into your room will be heard. Also watch out for any sharp corners or edges pointing towards you when you're sitting at your desk. You could reposition furniture or even place something in front of the sharp edge, maybe a plant. Also if the ceiling is slanted, maybe they're in the loft area of the house or it's a Dorma bungalow, if the ceiling is slanted place the desk in the highest part of the room rather than the lowest part of the room as if the ceiling is quite low above your head, it will suppress the Chi or the energy and effect how you're thinking. The Northeast area of the bedroom is also just as important as the Northeast area of your home so make sure that this area of the bedroom is as clutter-free as possible. Chi flow around this Northeast area needs to flow quite easily. You could also place a crystal in this area as it's an earth element so it's going to enhance the energy or even a globe that spins, then once a day spin this globe and that will activate the Chi to move around the room. In the Northeast area another thing you could do in the child's bedroom is to look at their Growth and Alignment direction of their Gua number. You could place pictures or items that inspire them, their goals and also their aspirations and who they want to become. As this direction, the Growth and Alignment direction, is connected to how you see yourself and who you believe you can become. So I think that it's quite a nice thing to do. They know their goals and what they want to achieve, let them choose what they want to put in their growth and alignment direction. So the last thing is the bed direction and I think this is really important too as if you don't get a good sleep then it's really difficult to concentrate and the body does need to be able to rest and recover. So using the Wellness and Recovery direction would be perfect for this but again any of the auspicious directions are good. I would try not to use the Wealth and Success direction if possible because the energy is quite activating and positive so it will be really difficult to be able to switch off at night and rest so your brain is not going to have time to rest, it is going to be constantly thinking about things and thinking about studying and all the different things it needs to do so it's not going to rest. So choose, if possible, the other three directions, ideally the Wellness and Recovery direction. So make sure that when you're lying in bed, your sleeping direction is determined by the direction the crown of your head is pointing. Understand the three annual afflictions and the four auspicious stars in 2026 in your home. So let's start with the annual afflictions first and the big one is called the Grand Duke. This affects just 15% of your home each year. The Grand Duke is always the same as the animal sign of the year so the Grand Duke this year, in 2026 is in the Horse area which is South 2 and the first thing that you need to know is not to sit directly opposite the Grand Duke. So if you are watching television in the evening or in your home office or at your office desk at work and are sitting opposite and facing the South 2 then you are offending the Grand Duke and this can cause you to feel quite defeated or maybe even cause an unexplained illness. Just be aware of this and use your compass when you're sitting at your desk or sitting in the evening on the settee. So the best thing to do is to sit with your back to the Grand Duke and you will be supported by him for the whole year if he is behind you and it's also a really good place for meditation and to visualize so an excellent place to have the Grand Duke behind you, so have the South 2 behind you. Keep this area quiet and peaceful,no shouting or arguing. no renovations, no drilling or digging outside even or hammering a nail in the wall because the five yellow is in the South this year too and should be kept quiet anyway. So it's just whether you are sitting opposite the Grand Duke and it could cause illness if it is activated. If your animal sign is opposite the Grand Duke this year, it's the year of the horse and the sign opposite is the rat,so if you are a rat just be extra cautious this year as well. If you are thinking about renovating, always check to see where the Grand Duke is for the next coming years just so you're aware of it. If you are going to renovate your home then never start or end where the Grand Duke is. Start in a different place and then move around and don't end where the Grand Duke is. The next one is called the Year Breaker and this always sits opposite the Grand Duke so we've just talked about the Grand Duke being in the South 2, so the Year Breaker for 2026 will be in the North 2. The Year Breaker can bring resistance or unexpected obstacles to the household, not just one specific person. Try to keep this area calm and quiet and avoid any major changes here or any confrontations of any kind in this area as well. The third one is called The Three Killings and this is the last of the annual afflictions and it always flies into one of the cardinal directions so it's either the East, the West, the South or the North. So if it flies into the East area of your home, it will be when it's the year of the Ox, the Rooster or the Snake. If it flies into the West area of your home it will be in the year of the Boar, the Rabbit or the Sheep. In the South. it will be the year of the Monkey, Rat or Dragon and this year it flies into the North area of the home, as it is the year of the Horse so if it's the year of the Dog, the Tiger or the Horse then the Three Killings will be in the North area of the home. It is activated by any renovations, any loud noise, moving heavy furniture, anything like that when it's activated it can cause a lot of instability, losses or disruptions. So try not to create a lot of noise in this area, keep it very gentle, calm and control the energy in this area. So let's get onto the four major auspicious stars of this year and tell you about the different areas that they fly into. So when they are activated they can help you increase your wealth, happiness and luck. They also help to balance out any of the negative stars of the year and help you to create positive energy in the home. These four stars are called the Sun star, the Moon star, the Fortune Virtue star and the Dragon Virtue star. So let's start with the Sun star. It says in ancient feng shui, ‘when the sun arrives, all evil will subside’ so this star helps to disperse any negative energy. To activate this star, you must do the activation during the day because it's obviously the Sun star so between sunrise and sunset, use this area. This is in the Southwest 1 in 2026 and the Sun star is a powerful benefactor and it helps to neutralize the negative energy by cleansing and replacing it with positive energy in your home. Also encourages prosperity, protection and support from helpful people and it opens the way for valuable help and opportunities. The Moon star is linked to entrepreneurs or anyone who is studying and it will help you with anything that you're involved in regarding increasing your wealth. The Moon star can also help to neutralize any relationship problems and help to improve them as well. So this year the Moon star is located in West 2 in 2026 and with the Moon star it is best activated during the evening so sunset to sunrise. Now we have the Fortune Virtue star and it is in the East 2 in 2026 and it is associated with happiness, celebrations and good fortune. It enhances any joyful occasions such as weddings, engagements, new ventures or business launches. Using this area in East 2 of your home will help create harmony, positivity and appreciation. The last one is the Dragon Virtue star and this is in the Northeast 1 in 2026 and this is the most valuable one as it can dissolve any negative energy that has been activated. So if you have accidentally activated the Grand Duke or the Three Killings, this will help to dissolve any negative energy and it also reduces the impact of any setbacks, challenges or difficult circumstances. So these are the four auspicious stars and the best way to activate them in your home is to use these areas. Any sort of minor renovations, rearranging or moving furniture around or even just giving a really good deep clean will just stimulate that energy in the area. Putting up new photographs or pictures on the wall, making any sorts of changes to your home or even outside planting trees in that area of your home that continues into the garden. Just stimulate that energy and play music. The Free Feng Shui Beginner's Kit is perfect If you've always wanted to understand Feng Shui but didn't know where to start. Every year the new annual energy arrives with the coming of Spring on 4th February and it marks the true energetic start of the year. I don’t want to overwhelm you too much as I go through each star with you but it's important to understand your home first. So if you know the compass directions of your home and the different areas then great. If you don't, then I have created a free five day Feng Shui Beginner’s Kit explaining how to use a compass, map your floor plan and also to write in the directions of your home and guide you step-by-step using videos and downloads. There's no catch at all, I just want you to be able to understand the basics of how you can map out your home and know exactly the directions in your home. So when we talk about the things I post on social media, you're not gonna make a mistake, as you've mapped out your home, so every year you will know where the annual energies are and know exactly which areas to use and which areas to avoid. Once you have mastered the basics, you'll be able to make better decisions on where to place your bed, where to place your study desk and the areas to use and to avoid with regards to the annual flying stars. So there's three main things that I just want to tell you before we start talking about the annual flying stars. The first one is you don't need to use trinkets or anything like this, you just use the areas that are good and positive this year. Use them for work, for making important phone calls, for family gatherings and parties. The second one is to avoid the negative areas. This is really important because they can be quite nasty if they are activated. We'll talk about this in a minute but avoid the negative areas. And the third one is to just concentrate on the areas that you use such as your main door, living room, kitchen, study or office, bedroom and also balcony, if you live in an apartment or a high-rise flat. So let's start with Star 1 in the center of the home. This is the Nobleman Star. Ideally use this area for helpful people and mentors, if you are facing challenges or looking for fresh ideas and it’s also a great place if you need to think strategically about something. This place is great for planning, reflection and also creative thinking. Keep the center of the home calm, balanced and peaceful to allow clarity and insight to flow naturally. Star 2 is in the Northwest of your home and it is the Illness star. It could bring mental strain, emotional stress, delays or health related challenges. In business matters, it may feel heavier and slower so avoid this area as it can create a lot of drama and toxic interactions. The best thing to do is to introduce metal elements in your home such as iron, copper, bronze or brass objects, they could be trophies, metal plates or dishes. Using the metal helps you to reduce the negative energy and helps you to just focus on prevention and to reduce any health risks. Star 3 is in the West of your home and this is the Argument Star, they all sound quite negative but bear with me because they get better! The Argument Star brings conflict, misunderstandings and disputes. It can trigger impatience or tension especially in communication. The best thing to do is to introduce a fire element which ideally is a candle, to reduce that negative energy. Each day I light a tealight that lasts about an hour, to soften that aggressive energy and it helps you to prioritize more harmony, listen to people and also increase that respect as well. If you're dealing with customer service, this is especially important because it will help to strengthen that customer service and diplomacy which are obviously essential in work. Star 4 is in the Northeast and this is the Academic Star and it supports learning, wisdom and personal growth. Success is possible here if you don't have any unresolved issues so any emotional or physical emotions may surface if you're working in this area. Be honest with yourself and be willing to adapt, maybe you learn differently than other people so give yourself a little bit of grace and this area will give you the courage and self reflection to create long-term success in your studies. Star 5 or the Five Yellow is one of the annual stars that you must pay attention to. This can bring disruption, setbacks and maybe even potential danger if it's disturbed. Renovations or anything groundbreaking in this area, drilling or hammering a nail in the wall and even loud music. If you have a neighbour in the South area who is having an extension built or even if there's a building site in the south area, this can all trigger the five yellow and activate it. At the end of the year in December, one of my neighbours had a tree in the South of my home in my garden and it needed to be removed and it was getting closer to the Chinese New Year on 4 February. I knew that in the South area was the Star 5 and if it wasn’t removed until after 4 February it would've triggered the Star 5 and that would've caused a lot of chaos. I would've had to put things in place for the rest of the year for that negative energy so it is really important to know where the South is in your home this year. So eventually it did get removed in January, I was so relieved. If you haven't activated the South, the best thing to do is to suppress star five and suppress that energy with metal. I use 60 KG of metal weightlifting plates and I place them in the South and leave them undisturbed for the whole year. You can dust them but don't move them. If this area has been disturbed with a renovation or you've done some building work in the South, the best thing to do is to use a six rod metal wind chime, make sure it's not made of even a small piece wood it must be all metal, so six rod metal wind chime and this will create the metal noise, which is a lot stronger than just the metal plates because of the metal noise that will help to override that negative earth energy. Also if your kitchen is in the South and you use the kitchen to cook then use the six rod metal wind chime in there too because you are activating this area when you're cooking all the time. The next star we have is the Star 6 in the North area and this governs authority, leadership and career and where it can support discipline and structure instability may arise. So try and keep this area clutter free, calm and stable. Avoid any renovations, drilling or moving any heavy furniture and try to postpone any major decisions made in the area, signing a contract or maybe just impulsive commitments, avoid doing that in the north area of your home. Star 7 is in the Southwest and this has a dual energy. So positively it can support opportunities and networking but negatively it can bring arguments or even financial loss. Use the space for connection and collaboration and try when you're in this area to be grateful and grounded and avoid any excess of any kind or any risky decisions. Star 8 is in the East area of the home is always the wealth Star, it helps support prosperity and opportunities through consistency and long-term vision as well. Perfect location for work, studying or even financial planning. Focus on study and progress rather than quick wins as Star 8 is more concerned with long-term income goals rather than financial wins. Then we come to Star 9 and that is in the Southeast which amplifies success, recognition and future prosperity through effort and clarity. Use this area for family time, creativity and for joyful celebrations. This area is great for visioning and manifestation and it helps to nurture connection and play an optimism optimism and familyIf you want The Free Feng Shui Beginner's Kit is perfect If you've always wanted to understand Feng Shui but didn't know where to start. 🎙️ Episode 1 — Why Your Front Door Controls Your Opportunities What if the energy outside your front door is affecting the opportunities coming into your life? In this first episode of the What The Feng Shui podcast, Vicki introduces you to Chi (Qi) — the life-force energy that surrounds us and flows into our homes. You'll discover why the quality of the Chi entering your home matters, and why your front door, balcony or window can be one of the most important places to start when looking at your Feng Shui. Vicki explains: What Chi is and how it works The difference between positive and negative Chi How Chi enters your home Why the external environment around your entrance matters What to look for when you open your front door How roads, trees, pylons, lamps and other structures can affect the energy coming towards your home Why the closer a negative feature is, the greater its potential impact Simple ways to block, redirect or neutralise negative Chi You'll also learn why Feng Shui isn't simply about moving furniture around inside your home — the environment outside your home matters too. So take a look outside your front door, balcony or window and ask yourself: What kind of energy is coming towards me? This episode is a simple introduction to traditional Feng Shui and the first step towards understanding how your home and its surrounding environment can support you. Listen now and discover what your front door could be saying about the opportunities entering your life. Transcript I’m so happy that you have chosen to listen today. My name is Vicki and I’m the founder of What the Feng Shui. In today's episode we are talking all about Chi and working with energy or Chi to support you and your home. You may see it spelt CHI or QI, but it is pronounced the same. Chi is the life force that exists everywhere and when it's strong it helps to support you but when it is weak, it can become harmful. Chi flows from the outside and into your home, if it's strong then fantastic but if it's weak then it could cause bad luck or ill health. There are two types of Chi which are Sheng Chi (growth Chi) or Sha Chi ( Killing Chi) We are aiming for your home to be surrounded by Sheng Chi so that it can enter your home and circulate around. So how can I get Chi into my home? The natural laws of Chi govern balance, harmony and movement. So think of Chi as a river, constantly flowing around and flowing from the high ground to the low ground. It will collect in open spaces and also is quite slow moving. If you are surrounded by positive Chi, you will feel optimistic, full of energy and confident but if you're surrounded by negative Chi then you will feel overwhelmed, tired and stressed. What kind of Chi is entering your home? If you live in a house whether it's a detached, semi- detached, a townhouse or bungalow, you will receive Chi from the main entrance of your home that you use. The door needs to connect from the outside environment to the inside of your home, so if you drive straight into your garage and enter through an interior door then this doesn't count as the main entrance. If you live in an apartment or a flat then the Chi will enter through your balcony or window rather than the communal entrance, as the Chi would have to go up the staircase or a lift, along the corridor and finally to your door, so by the time it arrived at your door it would be extremely weak. So whether it's your main door, balcony or window you need to start assessing what is there. So when you look out, you can see an open space directly in front, this is called the Bright Hall, it's an open, well-maintained space that could be a garden or a park area, hills or a mountain, lake, river or a pond that's clean with flowing water. Does it contain healthy plants and trees, as these all produce positive Chi. If your door, balcony or window is more cluttered with dead plants, leaves or rubbish then it can really be difficult for the Chi to enter your home. So make sure that you keep the entrance or your balcony clutter-free so that Chi can flow into your home uninstructed. If you have noticed any negative features then these will produce Sha Chi or negative Chi which can be sharp, fast, overwhelming or stagnant energy and it is a lot more intense and strong than the positive Chi. So negative forms in front of your main door, balcony or window are things like electric poles, pylons, even lamp posts, any large buildings or structures that can seem to be pointing directly towards you or it could be a roof edge that can create negative energy. Also if there is a narrow gap between two houses or two buildings straight opposite you, this can create sharp, negative energy that will rush towards your home. If there is fast-moving traffic rushing towards your entrance or balcony, especially if you are on a T-Junction, this will cause Sha Chi to enter your home. One solution would be if the road has speed bumps as that would reduce the speed of the traffic and also reduce the negative Chi. Any rubbish or overflowing bins, blocked or smelly drains or dead or decaying plants also produce negative Chi so trying to improve these areas, even if it's just small things, will make your entrance more appealing and it will help to produce more positive Chi entering your home. Any dirty or stagnant water around your home could create negative Chi so if the water is not clean, fresh and also moving it will not produce the Sheng Chi (positive Chi) that you need to enter your home. The last thing you need to be aware of is if there's any large trees in front of your entrance. If these are at the side of your home or on the side of your main entrance, it's fine but if you see a large tree as soon as you open your front door then it can be a problem. So the next thing you need to do, once you've assessed what's outside your main door, your balcony or your window, is to consider how close these objects, forms, lamp posts or pylons are to your home. Are they near or far away? Ask yourself, if it fell over would it be close enough to damage my home? So remember, we are just looking at the main entrance if you live in a house, if you live in an apartment, it’s the balcony or a window. So the further away it is the less of a negative impact it will have. But the closer it is, the more negative the Chi will be when entering your home and it can cause delays or blocked opportunities. So there are certain things that you can do regarding these negative features. You can block, by using an evergreen tree or climbers or a trellis and that will block the view and stop that negative Chi entering your home. A large curtain, shutters or a blind could also be used. Another thing you can do is you could redirect, by using a different entrance or move your door slightly so that it isn't facing a negative form. I know it's a bit drastic but it can make a big difference if you have a really negative structure that you physically can't move and it will just deflect that negative Chi coming into your home. Another way is to neutralise the negative Chi. We talked about this before with the really busy road. So a solution would be having speed bumps on that road to slow down the traffic so it’s not as fast and creating negative Chi rushing towards your home. So check today, have a look outside your main door, your balcony or your window and check for any negative forms and have a look to see if you could change them in any way. And yeah that's all the different things that you can use to stop that negative Chi coming into your home and this is one of the most important things you need to assess in Feng Shui. Welcome to the What The Feng Shui Podcast! Hi, I’m Vicki! My mission is to simplify traditional Feng Shui and make it practical and accessible, so your home becomes a powerful support for your health, wealth, relationships and life direction. With clear guidance and step-by-step blueprints, I help you align your space with your energy and your future — not just its appearance. My journey with Feng Shui began in my teenage years, when I discovered how deeply our spaces influence our wellbeing, our opportunities, and the flow of energy in our lives. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of learning from several incredible Feng Shui Masters and my passion for creating harmony in the home has only grown stronger. Although the Feng Shui teachings were rich and meaningful, they could also feel overwhelming. To truly understand them, I began breaking concepts down into simple, clear steps. I created notes, guides, and systems that made Feng Shui easy to learn and apply in everyday life. As my children grew older, I realized I wanted to preserve this knowledge for them—and eventually, to share it with others who were seeking the same clarity. Today, I’m excited to offer those guides to you. My hope is that they help you create balance, abundance, and joy in your own home and life.
