On September 30, 2026, Tennessee attempted to execute Christa Pike, the woman convicted of the brutal 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. But what was supposed to end a case nearly three decades old turned into a night of repeated needle attempts, closed curtains, emergency calls, and an execution that left Pike alive. In Part 2 of our Christa Pike coverage, Troubling Truths Podcast examines the disturbing timeline of Tennessee's failed lethal injection, from a last-minute court ruling to witness accounts of Pike breathing and moving long after the execution began. We discuss reports of approximately 10 needle attempts, a severely bent needle, questions surrounding the medical personnel, and the emergency response that eventually sent Pike to the hospital. We also examine the earlier failed execution of Tony Carruthers, the resignation of Tennessee corrections commissioner Frank Strada, and the investigation ordered by Governor Bill Lee.Pike's reported recovery raises serious questions about what happened inside that execution chamber. Meanwhile, Colleen Slemmer's family has been left facing another painful chapter after waiting 30 years for justice. What went wrong? Who was responsible? And should Tennessee be allowed to attempt another execution?Through eyewitness reporting, attorney statements, emergency recordings, and news coverage, we examine the unanswered questions while separating documented events from allegations that remain under investigation.HAVE INFORMATION OR A STORY TO SHARE?Have information about a case, a story you believe deserves attention, or questions for our team? What happens when abuse leaves no bruises, but slowly takes away everything that makes someone who they are?In Part 4 of our Mica Miller series, Troubling Truths welcomes special guest Michelle Larson, a registered nurse with more than 25 years of experience, domestic violence survivor, advocate, and author of The Seasons of Staying.Michelle joins us for a powerful conversation about coercive control, psychological abuse, manipulation, and the warning signs that are too often overlooked. Drawing from her own experiences, she explains how someone can gradually lose their independence, confidence, and sense of self, and why escaping an abusive relationship is rarely as simple as walking away.We also discuss Michelle's advocacy surrounding Mica Miller's case, the federal charges against John-Paul Miller, and the fight to pass Mica's Law, proposed South Carolina legislation that would recognize coercive control as a form of domestic violence and strengthen protections for victims.Mica's story has raised difficult questions about how our legal system responds to stalking, intimidation, and psychological abuse before physical violence ever occurs. Could stronger laws help prevent another tragedy? And how many victims are suffering in silence because the abuse they're experiencing isn't something others can see?Michelle also shares the inspiration behind her book, The Seasons of Staying, and her mission to help others recognize coercive control, find support, and reclaim their lives. If you haven't listened to Parts 1, 2, and 3 of our Mica Miller series, we encourage you to go back and hear our previous coverage, including our conversation with investigative reporter Jenn Wood. This is more than a conversation about one woman. Is there a serial killer in Lansing, Michigan? Five men have died along a relatively small stretch of the Lansing River Trail, raising disturbing questions about whether someone has been deliberately targeting the city's homeless population.Between October 2025 and August 2026, Gino Chouinard, Denis Dunnebacke, Robert Smith, Daniel Lusk, and Louis Woodruff were found with devastating injuries near the trail. Four suffered significant injuries to their heads or faces, while one was fatally stabbed. Investigators believe some of these men may have been attacked while sleeping, leaving police to consider whether the deaths are connected. In this episode of Troubling Truths, Sheri, Benna, and Pauline examine the timeline of all five deaths, the similarities investigators have identified, and the growing questions surrounding the Lansing Police Department's response. Police reportedly recognized similarities between cases in July, months before a public briefing addressed all five deaths. We also discuss the families demanding answers, concerns about surveillance along the trail, and whether the city's treatment of homeless encampments may have left vulnerable people even more exposed. One man, Edward Joseph Smith, has been charged in connection with Daniel Lusk's murder, but authorities have not publicly linked him to the other deaths. Police have not confirmed that a serial killer is responsible, and important questions remain unanswered.Could someone have been hunting vulnerable men along the Lansing River Trail? Were warning signs missed? And could there be other victims or surviving witnesses who have yet to come forward?HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE DEATHS?If you have any information that could help investigators, no matter how small it may seem, please contact the Lansing Police Department.Lansing Police Dedicated Tip Line: 517-483-6023Crime Stoppers: 517-483-STOP (7867)Your information could help bring answers to the families of these five men. Mica Miller’s death became national news, but the story didn’t begin on April 27, 2024. Long before that day, Mica was trying to leave her marriage to pastor JP Miller, talking to family and friends, seeking mental health treatment, and repeatedly reaching out to law enforcement. In Part One of our deep dive into the Mica Miller case, Sheri, Benna and Pauline go back to the beginning. We look at who Mica was before she became a headline, how JP Miller came into her life, their relationship and marriage, life inside Solid Rock Church, Mica’s documented mental health history, and the growing problems that eventually led her to seek separation. We also walk through the police paper trail leading up to her death, including repeated calls involving alleged tracking devices, vehicle issues, privacy concerns and other incidents Mica reported while trying to separate herself from JP. Throughout the episode, you’ll hear Mica in her own words along with audio and interviews from people who knew her. We separate documented facts from allegations and ask a difficult question: when someone has a documented mental health history, can that change the way police, family, doctors and everyone around them interpret what they are trying to say? This episode takes us right up to the night before April 27. In Part Two, we’ll examine Mica’s final day minute by minute, the official investigation into her death, JP Miller’s public response, what former Solid Rock members began saying afterward, and the federal criminal case that would eventually follow. Who killed Caroline Lake? In Episode 12 of Troubling Truths, investigative journalist Andy Fancher with FITSNews joins Sheri, Benna and Pauline to lead an in-depth discussion about this nearly forgotten Spartanburg County cold case.Caroline was only 20 years old when she disappeared from Duncan, South Carolina, in August of 1990. More than three decades have passed, and no one has ever been charged with her murder.Throughout the episode, Andy walks us through the case from beginning to end. He lays out Caroline’s timeline, explains how the case first came onto his radar and shares what he has learned from people who remember Caroline and the investigation.Andy also examines the missing links and unanswered questions surrounding Caroline’s disappearance, the discovery of her remains and the way the original investigation was handled. He discusses the rumors that were circulating before Caroline was found and why information from multiple independent sources convinced him that this case deserved another look. What happened after Caroline left her grandparents’ home? What happened to her white Toyota Corolla? Did people in the community already know she had been killed? Was important information overlooked? And could evidence from the case still provide answers through modern forensic testing? This episode brings Caroline’s name back into the public eye and asks the question that has gone unanswered since 1990: Who killed Caroline Lake?If you have information about Caroline’s case, or another case you believe deserves investigation, contact Andy Fancher Social media: @RealAndyFancher Email: andy@fitsnews.com Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/troubling-truths-podcast--7257062/support . © 2026 Proper Reckoning Media. Welcome to Troubling Truths. I’m Sheri, here with Pauline and Benna. Tonight, we are doing something a little different and bringing local stories to the table from our home states of South Carolina and Arkansas. These are three separate stories, but every one of them raises serious questions about trust, accountability, and the people we expect to do the right thing. Benna is digging into the allegations surrounding former Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office investigator Skylar Henderson. Those allegations involve the sharing of private case information and photographs, along with questions about what else may have been happening inside that department. She is also going to connect this discussion to Katie White’s reels about Crystal Freeman and Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger. Pauline is bringing us the Arkansas story involving former Hot Spring County Sheriff Scott Finkbeiner. He is out of federal prison, breaking his silence, and making some explosive accusations against prosecutors, judges, law enforcement officers, and other powerful people. We are only scratching the surface tonight because Scott is expected to join us in the next few weeks and answer our questions himself. And I’m bringing the crossover story connecting both states. Brandon and Sierra Britten are an Arkansas couple accused of grooming and abducting a 12-year-old girl from Spartanburg County before Brandon allegedly raped her inside their Arkansas home. We’re going to explain how investigators found her, what Sierra is accused of doing, and the serious charges both of them are now facing. Three local stories, two states, and a whole lot to bring to the table. Let’s get into it. In Troubling Truths Episode 11, Sheri, Pauline, and Benna cover the disturbing Siders family case out of Vinton County, Ohio, where authorities say 16 children were found living in horrific conditions inside a Hamden home. This episode breaks down the latest major updates, including the two new arrests connected to the broader investigation, the new sex-crime charges involving Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders, and the major ruling that Gary Siders Sr. has been found incompetent to stand trial. We also walk through how investigators ended up at the Siders home, why the case appears to be much bigger than the original child-endangerment charges, and the questions surrounding missed warning signs, including reports involving Dollar General clerks, prior child-welfare concerns, family claims, and public sightings. A major part of this episode also focuses on Elizabeth Siders’ timeline. She was reportedly only 15 when she married Gary Siders Jr., and questions continue to grow about grooming, isolation, pregnancy history, and whether Elizabeth may have been a victim before becoming one of the accused adults. As always, we separate confirmed reporting from online speculation. We discuss the current pregnancy rumor, DNA rumors, stillbirth claims, family knowledge questions, and other allegations circulating online while making clear what has and has not been verified. At the center of this case are the children. The biggest question remains: how did this go on for so long, and who had a chance to step in before authorities finally found them? In this episode of Troubling Truths, Sheri, Pauline and Benna take a deep look at the Pendleton quadruple murders in Anderson County, South Carolina. In 2015, Mike Scott, Cathy Scott, Barbara Scott and Violet Taylor were found brutally murdered inside their home near Pendleton, just minutes from Clemson. For nearly eight years, the case remained unsolved before Cathy’s daughter, Amy Vilardi, and Amy’s husband, Ross Vilardi, were arrested and charged with all four murders. We walk through the family tension, the bloody footprints, the missing red ASICS, the money trail, text messages, Amy’s 911 call, the early interviews with Amy and Ross, and the later confrontation where investigators told them they believed they were responsible. We also hear from Amy’s daughter Savannah, who speaks about the people she says raised and cared for her, and shares serious allegations about abuse she says she suffered within the family. Amy Vilardi has since been convicted of all four murders and sentenced to four consecutive life sentences. Ross Vilardi has not been convicted and is awaiting his separate trial. This episode also carries a personal connection for the show, as Benna knows relatives of the victims. Tonight, we remember Mike Scott, Cathy Scott, Barbara Scott and Violet Taylor, and examine the evidence, the unanswered questions, and the case that shook a small South Carolina community.
