But I'm not convinced any of those three will actually take Buffalo's first punt return of the season. Why? Greg Dortch. Dortch is currently on Buffalo's practice squad, which means he can't be listed on the unofficial depth chart. But the Bills can elevate him on game day. And after everything we've heard about Dortch and his ability as a return specialist, I think that's exactly what's going to happen. Alford has experience returning punts. Ray Davis desperately wanted the job throughout training camp. Shakir gives Buffalo another emergency option. But Dortch has made a career in the NFL largely because of what he provides on special teams. He also gives Buffalo something else. A sixth receiver. The Bills currently have only five receivers on the active roster, so elevating Dortch could give Joe Brady another offensive option while simultaneously addressing one of Buffalo's biggest special-teams questions. The interesting question then becomes: Whose game-day jersey does Dortch take? Could Keleki Latu be inactive? Could Buffalo make a surprising decision at receiver? We'll find out soon enough. Coleman had the better preseason, especially when Buffalo put its first-team offense on the field. We heard plenty of positive things about Palmer throughout training camp, but we didn't necessarily see that translate into the preseason games. Now Coleman gets the early edge. Can he take advantage of it? That's only one of four things that caught my attention on Buffalo's first depth chart. Dorian Williams is officially ahead of Kaleb Elarms-Orr after what Buffalo described as an open competition at linebacker. Williams is entering a contract year, and KEO could eventually be the long-term answer at the position. But the Bills aren't building for 2027 right now. They're trying to win a Super Bowl. If Williams gives Buffalo its best chance to do that, I'm perfectly fine with him getting the first opportunity. Then we've got a number change for Maxwell Hairston. Goodbye No. 31. Hello No. 1. And finally, Dee Alford's placement on this depth chart could help explain one of my biggest concerns with Buffalo's initial 53-man roster. Alford is listed as the starting nickel AND a backup outside corner. Combine that with Jordan Hancock's ability to play nickel, and suddenly Buffalo has a little more flexibility in the secondary than the roster numbers initially suggested. It's unofficial. And I'll give McDermott a lot of credit. He could've been bitter. Instead, he praised what Brandon Beane has done with the roster, expressed confidence in Joe Brady and made it clear he's still rooting for Buffalo. McDermott also pointed out something important. Joe Brady isn't inheriting the organization McDermott inherited. McDermott walked into a franchise that hadn't made the playoffs in 17 years. Brady is taking over a team McDermott believes is already standing at the doorstep of the Super Bowl. Then there's McDermott's own future. He's taking 2026 off. But he absolutely wants to coach again. McDermott says he still has the burning desire to win a championship and wants another opportunity as an NFL head coach. And I think he'll eventually get one. You can criticize how the McDermott era ended without pretending his entire tenure in Buffalo was a failure. Now imagine the future storyline. Joe Brady succeeds in Buffalo. McDermott gets another AFC head coaching job. And one day, Sean McDermott has to go THROUGH the Buffalo Bills to win the championship he never won here. The Buffalo Bills only kept three true outside corners, four inside linebackers and five wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster. That sounds risky. But Brandon Beane just explained why Buffalo might not be nearly as thin as those numbers suggest. The Bills aren't really looking at this as a 53-man roster. With 16 practice squad spots, an international exemption and the ability to elevate two players on game day, Buffalo is essentially managing a pool of nearly 70 players throughout the season. And Joe Brady took that idea even further. There could be certain matchups where a player on the practice squad is actually ahead of someone on the active roster because Buffalo believes that player gives them something they need that week. That completely changes how we should look at some of the Bills' biggest roster questions. Especially at cornerback and linebacker. Buffalo already has potential answers sitting on the practice squad, including veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson and another boundary corner option in Connie Walker. Then there's Greg Dortch. Buffalo still hasn't completely settled its punt returner situation, and Dortch has years of experience doing exactly that. More importantly, he emphasized making the right decisions and protecting the football — something that matters even more after Ray Davis' costly preseason muff. The Buffalo Bills kept FOUR tight ends and ZERO fullbacks on their initial 53-man roster. That might tell us a lot about what Joe Brady wants this offense to become. Buffalo kept Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox, Jackson Hawes and Kaliki Latu while moving on from its traditional fullbacks. But I don't think that means the Bills are abandoning everything a fullback brought to this offense. They may just be changing WHO does it. Hawes and Latu potentially give Buffalo players who can motion across the formation, operate as H-backs, lead block and handle some of the dirty work in the running game. And that could have a major impact on Dalton Kincaid. Instead of consistently asking Kincaid to handle traditional tight end responsibilities, Buffalo could move him around the formation and create mismatches as a receiver. Four tight ends doesn't necessarily mean four players doing the same job. It could give Brady four completely different pieces to work with. Then there's seventh-round rookie Ar'maj Reed-Adams. Reed-Adams played well enough throughout the preseason that Buffalo ultimately decided it couldn't risk exposing him to waivers. The Bills kept 10 offensive linemen despite Reed-Adams currently offering limited positional versatility. That tells me something. Buffalo believes there's something worth developing. Maybe Reed-Adams spends 2026 learning behind veterans like Alec Anderson and Austin Corbett. And maybe, when we're talking about Buffalo's offensive line next offseason, the Bills already have another legitimate option sitting on their roster. For a seventh-round pick? The Buffalo Bills have their initial 53-man roster. And there are TWO defensive decisions I did not see coming. First, Buffalo is entering the week with only three true outside cornerbacks: Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston and Davison Igbinosun. That's surprisingly light for a team that has spent so much time talking about improving its cornerback depth. So why would Brandon Beane be comfortable doing it? Jordan Hancock might be the answer. Hancock's emergence in the slot potentially gives Buffalo some flexibility with Taron Johnson, who has experience playing outside if the Bills need another option. But I'm still not convinced this cornerback room is finished. Then there's the EDGE room. Buffalo kept SIX outside linebackers, including Mike Danna. Danna had a good camp and brings NFL experience and positional versatility, but I didn't expect Buffalo to go this heavy at the position. And I have a theory about why they couldn't risk cutting him. What happens if Buffalo releases Danna and Kansas City immediately calls? Danna spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Chiefs. Kansas City knows exactly what he provides, and Buffalo knows it could potentially be handing a useful veteran right back to one of its biggest AFC competitors. Was that actually part of Brandon Beane's thinking? Maybe.
