Thomas Thorogood unpacks the meaning of ‘The Odyssey’ (2026 movie), written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. It's an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey from around the 8th century BC. How does the movie handle the fantastical elements of the story? What happened at the cross? Sometimes the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement is criticised as novel. Here Glen Scrivener shows that the ancient church (both Eastern and Western) proclaimed Christ's death as a penal substitution. But crucially they proclaimed it in the context of three other doctrines which are vital. What are they? Listen to find out. Thank you that these can be used to share Christ. Please guide us to make things that are beautiful and honest and true. May we not work from a place of emptiness. Seeking to climb the ladder of the world for our own personal gain. But may we instead flow from a place of fullness. Knowing that in Christ, we are truly nourished. And from that place in your arms, may we overflow with that cross-shaped love out into the world. For those of us who are called to share Christ online, please give us the strength do so boldly and creatively. By your Spirit, may doors be opened for our message. And yet, may it also be our ambition to lead quiet lives. Keep us from getting caught up in the spectacle of social media. Challenge us and ground us if we ever fall into using technology as a means to dehumanise. We ask that our work would instead amplify and point to the intensely personal reality of Christ and his church. May the digital be a complement and not replacement for the physical. May the tiny pixels of our screens be overwhelmed by the light of Christ himself. Amen. Support the show
