The Archers

Alan is just trying to get through his Sunday duties. Usha laments how much of people’s time will be wasted before the formal complaint against Alan is dismissed. Alan says he hopes it will be dismissed, but talking about it won’t speed it up. He’s just grateful he can still do his job. As Alan gets into his cassock, he chats to Neil who has arrived to chaperone him. Alan knows Neil has been given an important safeguarding task and wants to make this as painless as possible. When Alan goes to get the plate, Neil says he’s changed the code and asks Alan to leave the room. During Alan’s sermon, Usha tries to get sympathy out of Neil who takes his duty seriously. Later Alan tells Usha he got to try to rise above the complaint. At No. 6 The Green, Jazzer is trying to prop up the old fence panels. Tracy says the posts are too rotten. Tracy just wants to buy new panels to sort it quickly. Jazzer says they don’t even know the fence is theirs, and Helen is just trying to put the bill on them. Jazzer rambles about how Helen even made Brad pay for driving in her gate. Tracy tries to help him but the panels fall over, revealing Helen who has been listening to the whole conversation. Helen says she thought the housing association would pay, but Jazzer says he’s not even sure it is their fence. Jazzer is convinced that Helen knows it’s not their fence, but he needs proof.

Returning to Ambridge, Jazzer and Tracy look at all the damage the storm has caused. Tracy becomes emotional at the spot where the tree nearly injured Chelsea. At least Pip and Stella were able to go on their honeymoon. They’re unloading their suitcases when Helen approaches. She asks how their holiday was, before pointing out that a couple of fence panels have blown across the garden damaging some plant pots. Helen says she’ll leave it with Jazzer and Tracy to fix. Jazzer says isn’t it her boundary? The Archdeacon arrives to talk to Alan. Alan welcomes him to the Vicarage, offering cake. The Archdeacon says he’s here in an official capacity as a formal complaint has been made about Alan. Alan maintains he has done nothing wrong. He didn’t know that Carol had transferred the money. The Archdeacon says that’s not the point of this meeting. Alan says Anna is riddled with guilt. The Archdeacon cuts him off saying they should use neutral language: the complainant and the deceased. Alan laughs – does that make him the accused? The Archdeacon asserts he’s here to explain how this will be dealt with by the diocese. Alan becomes upset and says he’s innocent. The Archdeacon says they have to refer the complaint to Adult Social Services and there will be interim safety plan. Alan won’t be able to handle collection boxes or the plate on Sunday. He won’t be able to visit any parishioner unaccompanied. Alan has to sign to say he agrees to these terms.

George arrives at Little Grange to check if Keira has gone to school. He offers to give her a lift, but Keira says the bus is fine. George says it is if she was actually going to school. Keira says all that time in A&E tired her out, and George points out they couldn’t find anything actually wrong with her. George makes her a cup of tea and forces her to talk. She says he’s being horrible. He argues that Will was in a state yesterday and it took an hour to calm him down; Keira knows what happened to Nic and isn’t a kid anymore. Keira says she didn’t mean to panic Will, she just hates school. She can’t bear it. George tries to question why she doesn’t want to go to school. He threw away the opportunities school gave him, and he doesn’t want Keira to do the same. At Rewilding, Martyn Gibson is demanding copies of all the files relating to tree maintenance. He says if there is a claim, they’ll need to prove that BL and Rewilding Ambridge are completely in the clear. Martyn says he tried to visit Vince but got turned away, as did Alan. Rex stalls handing over the files saying he doesn’t know all the passwords. Martyn says they can just call Kirsty to get them. Martyn detects that Rex is being obstructive. Rex confesses that the problem tree was due an inspection, but shoulders the blame saying it was his fault that the inspection was forgotten. Martyn barely controls his anger before leaving. Rex calls Helen in a panic. Helen says he has to tell Kirsty, but Rex says her blood pressure is through the roof and he doesn’t want to add to it. Rex says he will take the fall for the omission.

Zainab thinks her dad is avoiding her. Azra says he’s just on a plumbing job in Penny Hassett. Zainab says she can protect herself and that she’s already dealt with racism, recently from Lawrence at the golf club. Azra says she might have to arrest people she’s sympathetic to, but Zainab says she’s hardly the first Muslim woman to join the police. Azra says she would be the first in the family, to which Zainab points out their cousin Usman is a detective. Later, Azra says they’ll support Zainab’s decision. Will is driving Keira to school as she doesn’t want anyone seeing her on the bus and knowing she’s having to take catch-up classes. Will tells Keira to wave to Alan as they pass but she says there’s something going on with him. News that he got chucked out of Carol’s funeral has spread. Keira says she’s got a headache and pleads with Will to pull over. Will gives her water and painkillers, but Keira says she just needs to lie down. Will wants to check her cuts aren’t sore. One looks particularly red, so Will says they should go to A&E. In the surgery, Elizabeth has come in for an appointment as she’s scared her depression will come back. Between Vince being relentlessly upbeat, Freddie trying to hold down the abattoir and Lily micromanaging, she confesses she feels fragmented and is having panic dreams. Azra asks if Elizabeth always puts this much pressure on herself. Azra advises they start with counselling. She’ll put a list together of counsellors.

Ed calls Storm a “little bruiser” whilst George recounts some of Will’s storm puns. Keira pulls a face at having to go to catch-up classes during half term. Storm then needs changing, getting them off the topic of school. As Ed double checks Keira has everything, she becomes teary and begs not to go. Keira says she’s getting flashbacks and can’t be around people. She pleads for one more day at home to recover as Ed says he’ll call the surgery. Ed and Emma agree she must go in tomorrow but can have today off. George says he’ll teach Keira how to change Storm’s nappy as payment. Confused, Keira plays dumb, but George says he knows she’s just skiving. At Rewilding Ambridge, Helen’s checking on Peggy’s artwork. It has survived. Helen is chatting whilst Rex’s mind is clearly elsewhere. He asks if there’s any news about Vince, but Helen’s vague update brings him no relief. Kirsty arrives, to Rex’s surprise. She’s meant to be resting but has grown bored. Helen says they could grab a smoothie later. Rex had said he would call Kirsty with an update, but he hasn’t. She quizzes him. Rex repeats that everything’s fine and says it’s just boring paperwork, nothing to interrupt Kirsty’s rest. Rex promises he’ll tell Kirsty if anything important comes up. Kirsty goes for a stroll around Rewilding. Helen asks Rex what’s wrong as he’s clearly the worst liar. Rex is worried about the tree that fell on Vince and how it was meant to be booked by Kirsty for an inspection.

There’s chaos in the kitchen at No. 1 The Green with baby things everywhere. Ed and Will discuss baby Storm’s name. Will says he’d be besotted even if the baby was called Donut. Akram proposes a family breakfast as Azra doesn’t have work until lunchtime, but Zainab says she wants to talk to them both. She has been thinking about her future, and she wants to help people for a career. Akram keeps interrupting until Zainab says she’d like to join the police. Akram is worried about the possible hostility she might face from the world and from within the police. He asks who she’s spoken to about this, whilst Zainab says she’s only done research and spoken to them. Zainab says they’re clearly against it. Akram says he’s not but just to take her time with it. Azra agrees that she needs to be sure before she commits. Martyn is visiting Rewilding worried about the tree that fell on Vince Casey. Rex says everything is up to date as Kirsty is always on top of things. Martyn thinks they should be prepared in case Vince decides to sue. Will and Ed arrive to clear the rest of the tree, but any more work will have to wait until Emma is available. Continuing to worry, Martyn asks about the beaver enclosure until Rex pulls him away so the Grundys can focus. Later, Ed finds Rex to talk about the fallen tree. He didn’t want to say in front of Martyn, but that tree was due to be inspected again.

Eddie and George are trying to rescue a turkey. George refers to the turkey as Stormzy as they slowly catch him. When George says he and Amber will be coming to the community orchard later, Eddie doubts anyone will turn up. The Maliks are heading down to the orchard after Akram takes down his broken greenhouse at the allotment. Zainab offers to help but Akram is feeling sentimental. Elizabeth knocks on the door with a bouquet of flowers to thank Zainab. Akram’s shocked to hear how brave Zainab was during the storm. Azra makes Elizabeth a cup of tea and asks how Vince is. Elizabeth confesses that Vince will probably never walk again, something she hasn’t told anyone outside the family. Eddie’s giving a speech to thank everyone who turned up to help and proposes an apple-themed bonfire in the orchard next week. George and Amber debate baby names and Eddie suggests naming him after an apple. Amber likes the idea of a nature-based name. They all discuss the damage. Helen says she was lucky, only the garden fence was damaged. Eddie is upset over the destruction, and Amber says they could plant more trees for the whole village. Akram’s annoyed to hear of Zainab’s bravery from other people. Zainab just says she hardly saved the day. Akram says he just wants to be proud of his daughter. In the car, Amber says she can smell something. George says that was Stormzy the turkey disgracing itself earlier. Amber says maybe that’s it: “Storm” is what they should call the baby.

Pip and Josh catch up on the way to visit Vince in hospital. Pip can’t believe Josh wound them all up, pretending he wouldn’t be coming back for the wedding. Josh doesn’t yet know if he’ll return to Patagonia. At Lower Loxley, Elizabeth admits to Lily that a long sleep and food have put her in a better place. She feels up to catching up with some work before visiting Vince. Lily admits that she really likes Harrison and hopes they’ll be accepted as a proper couple one day in the community. Elizabeth urges her to spend an evening with Harrison and not to wait around to look after her mum. Pip and Josh comment that Vince is looking better than they’d expected. Vince feels he owes them, and Chelsea, such a lot for looking after him and possibly saving his life. They joke about Pip and Stella’s forthcoming honeymoon in Iceland and Vince seems upbeat. Speaking to Pip and Josh in the hospital corridor, Elizabeth’s more cautious. She feels Vince’s attitude could be bravado as they don’t really know what they’re dealing with. His positivity could all come crashing down. Later Freddie has updated Vince with work matters and Vince makes Elizabeth smile for the first time this week. He encourages her to go and get a cup of tea. But when Elizabeth returns she’s missed the consultant’s visit. They’ve given their opinion to Vince, the worst news he can imagine. They’re not sure if he will walk again.

Zainab thinks she’s seen Joy’s missing cat Ena on the roof of a neighbour’s house. She borrows a pet carrier from the vets while Harrison fetches a ladder, and they work together to get it down. Harrison is hesitant – not because he’s afraid of heights, but because he doesn’t like handling cats. Joy is delighted - she’ll get Ena fed and checked over and let the cat chat know she’s been found. Elizabeth is on a short visit home to Lower Loxley – Lily worries this this will be her fourth day at Vince’s side but she really needs her to speak to the insurance assessor. Elizabeth doesn’t want to talk to anyone and isn’t really eating. Ian and Oliver have let Lily concentrate on Lower Loxley for now. Lily could do with some help with the insurance claim but Elizabeth is dismissive. She sees Lower Loxley as cursed – nothing good happens there or thrives. Lily suggests she’s catastrophising and is only saying this because Elizabeth is exhausted and in shock. Elizabeth decides to return Joy’s calls and gets upset. She shares that they keep doing tests on Vince but there are no results and it’s so worrying. When Elizabeth leaves for the hospital, Lily breaks down to Harrison. With Freddie tied up at Casey Meats and Elizabeth always with Vince, Lily’s worried about handling the cancellations and responsibility herself. Harrison tries to console Lily as she explains that she can see her mum could sink into depression again. Lily wouldn’t be able to deal with that.

Keira and Eddie are surveying the damaged trees at the Community Orchard the day after the storm. Many trees have been destroyed and there are hundreds of apples to collect before they start to rot. Keira’s glad to have mild injuries, enough to allow her off school for the day. Eddie comments on how the storm is good for the tree surgery business. After half an hour of collecting apples they’ve still not made an impact, so Keira suggests raising an army of apple collectors. As a community, they’ve all been through the mill so maybe making things out of the apples together will help everyone. Josh joins Ben in sweeping up glass in The Orangery. Lily is sorting insurance, Freddie is holding the fort at Casey Meats and Elizabeth hasn’t left Vince’s side. Josh reports the huge amount of damage across Ambridge, however Tom’s new super greenhouse has remained intact. Josh isn’t keen to join the group chat Joy has set up to look for her missing cat, Ena. Sporting a nasty bruise, Chelsea joins them to help. She’s hoping for news on Vince. They know he’s conscious but no other update. Ben remembers the noise when the lightning struck the chimney, like a bomb exploding. Chelsea reflects that she might need more work while The Orangery is closed, and Josh and Ben book in for haircuts to keep her busy. Chelsea can’t stop worrying, as Vince took the hit to save her. Why can’t someone tell them what’s going on?

The storm continues into the early evening of Sunday. At Lower Loxley, David approaches Elizabeth with the news of Vince’s accident and that the ambulance can’t get through. Pip and Stella want to help and remember they have the tractor and front loader. As Chelsea and Josh wait for the ambulance, Chelsea praises unconscious Vince for saving her life by pushing her out of the way of the tree. As they drive to the accident scene, Elizabeth reveals to David that she fought with Vince on Friday. She’s scared that she won’t get to say goodbye and tell him what he means to her. Zainab is putting out more lanterns when a crash and screams are heard from The Orangery. Zainab knows her brother, with Keira and Henry, are in there, and rushes off. Later, Harrison finds Zainab crying with relief. The large chimney had crashed through The Orangery glass onto the buffet, but incredibly, no one was hurt. Ben thinks Keira needs a hospital check to make sure there’s no glass in her cuts. Harrison commends Zainab on her calm reaction – she’s been impressive. Stella and Pip struggle, but eventually manage, to move the falling tree, allowing the ambulance to get through to Vince. As the rain stops, Elizabeth goes off in the ambulance with Vince and David takes Chelsea home. Pip and Stella reflect on their dramatic day. Perhaps they could do their dance at next year’s Fete or Flower and Produce instead. They are so happy to have married each other.

It’s still Sunday and Ben and Ruth are enjoying the buffet and looking forward to the brides’ first dance. Ruth wishes Josh was there to be part of it – he shouldn’t be missing his own sister’s wedding over a girl he’s just met. Out in the storm, Vince finally regains consciousness encouraged by Chelsea. She doesn’t want to move him, and can’t raise the alarm on either of their phones, which are trapped in the car. Vince is disorientated but Chelsea promises to run to get help. She hears a voice approach – it’s Josh! He phones for help and they reassure Vince that the fire crew and ambulance are on their way. Chelsea urges Josh to unpack his rucksack for layers to cover Vince, and Josh gives Chelsea a coat. Unable to reach anyone at Lower Loxley, Chelsea urges Josh to talk about his travels to keep Vince alert. Josh had wanted to surprise the family but had to be dropped off by a taxi because of all the fallen trees. Chelsea questions how help will get through to Vince? Harrison is worried that Vince and Chelsea aren’t answering calls in the storm, and Ben and Ruth realise they’ve missed multiple calls from Josh. Ruth calls Josh and raises the alarm with Harrison. As Ruth promises to bring help, the party music is silenced and lights go out at Lower Loxley – there’s been a power cut. Vince is weakening as Josh and Chelsea try in vain to keep him conscious. Chelsea pleads with him not to die.

At Brookfield bungalow, Chelsea is hurricane-proofing Pip’s hair with extra spray when Stella comes in. The brides admire each other’s beauty – they’ve decided not to follow the bad luck superstitions of not seeing each other before the wedding. David arrives with the tractor decorated with fairy lights and Stella drives Pip to Lower Loxley in the pouring rain. Clarrie and Eddie are ready to leave when they notice damage to the pole-barn roof. There’s no option but to move the turkeys to the shed a mile away. Once that’s done, they decide not to venture out to the wedding and choose warm baths and an old romantic film instead. With claps of thunder adding to the wedding atmosphere, Pip and Stella exchange heartfelt vows in Lower Loxley’s Great Dining Room. At the drinks reception, Vince lets them know that the photographer is ready for them, but they’re quite windswept. Chelsea offers to get her make up kit from the bungalow to fix them and Vince offers to drive her. Vince and Chelsea are held up by helping a lady and her children out in the storm with their car. The brides delay the photos and invite everyone to start the buffet over in The Orangery. Having helped the lady, the perilous journey worsens for Vince and Chelsea, whose road is blocked by debris, possibly fly-tipped wood. They exit the car into the storm and start to move the wood. A tree cracks and Vince alerts Chelsea. They cry out and the car alarm activates as it crashes down.

Officially finished work to concentrate on Sunday’s wedding, Pip and Stella visit Lower Loxley to hear Elizabeth’s wet weather contingency plans. The brides-to-be are upbeat and confident. They’re determined to make the most of it, whatever the weather. Stella reveals to Pip that she and David have possibly fallen out over her comments about Josh. David joins them with an apology about his outburst. He does actually agree with what Stella said about Josh on Wednesday and realises he’s been a hypocrite. David asks if he can still walk Stella down the aisle after all, and she happily accepts. Following a frosty encounter with Freddie at breakfast, Vince sends him a voice message outlining some more responsible tasks he has for him to build his skills. Meanwhile, Freddie has a word with his mum, outlining his frustrations with her and Vince, who he thought would have shown him more support. He’s particularly disappointed in Elizabeth’s lack of belief in him to run Lower Loxley. Furious that Vince has seemingly misrepresented her, she and Vince argue. How dare he demotivate her son, someone who already struggles with self-esteem? Vince defends himself, arguing that he shouldn’t always be the bad guy when both of them have reservations about Freddie’s capabilities. Vince wants to build Freddie’s skills, but Elizabeth doesn’t think his hard man tactics are the solution for Freddie. Vince retorts that in that case she shouldn’t come crying to him next time her future livelihood is threatened.

After two days of being ignored by Khalil, Keira has had enough and confronts him on the bus to school. He thinks she should know why he’s not talking to her, but she is adamant that she hasn’t got a clue. Later, Khalil reveals to Henry that Keira broke her promise, telling Henry about Khalil’s childhood cancer. Henry reveals that he actually found out online via a fundraising page featuring an old picture of Khalil. Henry suggests Khalil should apologise to Keira in person. She says this fallout could have been avoided by speaking to her directly instead of blanking her for days. But to make it up to her, he could help collect apples in the community orchard. Freddie and Rosie have decided on a decorated tractor as the surprise transport for Pip and Stella’s wedding as an alternative to the cancelled ‘unicorn’ horse and carriage. Vince calls Freddie in to talk about his future. Freddie is buoyant with the knowledge of the trustees having faith in him and wanting him back at Lower Loxley in a year or so. Vince doesn’t want Freddie to take this the wrong way, but in his and Elizabeth’s opinion, he still has a way to go and things to learn before he’s ready. Freddie is blindsided by the comments and petulantly reacts. He suggests that Vince never really believed in him and only took him on at Casey Meats to get into his mum’s good books. All the positivity the trustee news had brought Freddie is gone, leaving Vince frustrated.

At Berrow Farm, Martyn Gibson is concerned about costs in their challenging pig industry and warns Jazzer that they’ll need to make hefty savings. Jazzer fishes for information – does he mean job losses? Martyn assures him that Jazzer's job at least is safe. Jazzer is worried. Hannah’s put an offer in for her first house – and what about Neil? After talking about the stormy forecast for the wedding, David shares with Brian that he feels Josh has been alienated from Brookfield, and now they’ve lost him. Brian argues that David and Ruth are doing much better than he is with his family. Alistair’s missing his dad Jim and just wants to meet Jazzer for a friendly pint. But on getting to the bar he’s accosted by Martyn who feels Alistair’s vet invoice was a bit steep. Brian joins in the criticism, suggesting that in the future, with all the welfare monitoring tech available to farms, vets might find themselves redundant. In The Bull, Brian insists on buying Stella a drink, and she’s joined by Hannah as they’re celebrating Hannah’s new house offer being accepted. Stella loudly vents her frustration with Josh cancelling his wedding plans apparently for a new girl he’s met in Patagonia. She’s appalled when Brian points out that David has overheard. Outside the pub David says he understands her frustration but is really disappointed with her. She shouldn’t have voiced it so clearly to their community. He’s so hurt that he no longer wants to walk her down the aisle.

Keira and Henry wish Khalil a happy 16th birthday and promise him a treat at the school shop. Keira is looking forward to dancing and celebrating with the boys at the wedding, however she’s less impressed at having to go to school over half term for catch up lessons. Waiting in the shop queue, Henry almost lets slip that he knows about Khalil’s childhood cancer and covers himself, however Khalil isn’t fooled. When Keira arrives, Khalil’s sharp with them both, saying he doesn’t want them to buy him anything. Freddie is annoyed that the ‘Unicorn’ he’s ordered for the wedding has cancelled because of the weather forecast. Elizabeth reminds him that horses don’t like storms. Freddie reveals to his mum that he’d applied to be General Manager of a stately home in dire straits, but the application had not got any further. He’s frustrated that he’ll never get the experience needed to manage Lower Loxley. Elizabeth thinks the struggling hall would have been too much of a challenge, but on a positive note, the trustees have had a shift in attitude towards Freddie. Because of his responsibilities at Casey Meats, he may even be able to take over at Lower Loxley in a year. Later, Vince shares his reservations with Elizabeth. Freddie is doing well but he still has a long way to go. He didn’t ask Elizabeth for help with his stately home application for example – he doesn’t yet have the wisdom to ask for advice when he needs it.

Pip and David discuss AI in farming, which they think can’t be ignored. Pip tells David that Stella’s mum is still coming to the wedding but won’t be walking Stella down the aisle. David offers his services instead of Stella’s mum. The weather forecast still isn’t good for the wedding and Josh messages to say he won’t be back from Patagonia in time. Ruth wonders to David and Pip if Azra will keep up the hostilities forever, after a frosty meeting in the shop. David encourages Ruth not to give up, and to take Azra for lunch, which she does. Ruth apologizes again for showing Khalil the photos of the sheep. Although Azra is still annoyed with Ruth, she misses her friend and remembers how welcome Ruth made her feel when she first came to Ambridge. Reunited, they discuss the upcoming wedding. Ruth asks Usha about Anna’s whereabouts, as she called round to Carol’s cottage over the weekend and Anna didn’t answer. Usha is keen to speak to Anna. Anna is still very angry with Alan, but agrees to a visit from Usha. Alan returning the money won’t be enough for Anna. Every time she tries to convince herself that Alan isn’t a bad person, the facts keep crashing back. Anna can’t believe that in her final days, Carol was betrayed by Alan. Anna’s stunned that Alan would have got involved in Carol’s banking when she’d specifically asked him not to. Usha defends Alan and says he’s not trying to hide anything. Later, Usha tells Ruth that the funeral upset was just a misunderstanding between Anna and Alan.

Pip and Stella are in wedding planning mode and discuss their first dance, practicing lifting each other. On a more serious note, Pip is worried about the lack of silage stored for their pasture-fed herd. They’re running low even before the cows come inside for the winter. They’re interrupted by a message – Stella’s mum’s in A&E. Nothing is broken but she has a bad sprain and won’t be able to walk Stella down the aisle as planned. Pip suggests asking David to do it – Ruth will be with Pip. As Helen helps her brother harvest the last of the peppers and cucumbers, Tom is filled with enthusiasm for his greenhouse. Although Helen gently teases him, she agrees that they have the best of both worlds at Bridge Farm – tech and tradition. Visiting an injured stag at Home Farm, Alistair listens to Brian brag about how well the farm is doing without Adam’s input. However, when Alistair presents his invoice, Brian is astonished at the cost, accusing him of daylight robbery. Brian thinks the charges set by Lovell James are lining the pockets of shareholders and he’s not at all happy. Calling Helen, Brian shares his concerns about the vet price increases and meets her and Tom at The Bull. Brian argues that a farm feeding the nation is too important to be at the mercy of shareholders. Tom would argue that Bridge Farm is even higher up in the hierarchy for needing support. However, they all want to join the fight against rising costs.

At the Rewilding site, people gather on a beautiful day for Carol Tregorran’s send off. Fallon makes a fond joke about Carol. Jolene’s pleased to see her daughter laughing again, especially after seeing Harrison apparently move on so fast, with Lily. Fallon needs a blank canvas and Jolene suggests legal advice about Woodbine cottage. Fallon comforts emotional Anna, who’s ignoring calls from Alan. Anna is convinced Alan absolutely knew Carol’s money was in his bank account all along. Meanwhile, anxious Alan is at home fretting about what to do, but tentatively arrives at the event, ready to speak only if called forward. As he starts his planned eulogy, Anna takes exception and orders him away, causing an emotional scene as Helen tries to mediate. Things escalate as Anna challenges Alan over abusing his position. The celebrant calmly encourages everyone to make their way to The Bull. Back at home, Usha remembers that Carol got Alan’s bank details to transfer money for flowers, shortly before the large transaction. Alan feels vindicated, but Usha warns him to tread carefully - he should be upfront and speak to the Bishop before Anna puts in a formal complaint. At a quiet Bull, Fallon and Jolene wonder what that was all about. They can’t find Anna and start to worry.
