She got the promotion she spent years working toward. Two weeks later, she was near tears on our coaching call. Nothing went wrong. Nobody treated her badly. The money was better, the title was real, and everyone on LinkedIn congratulated her. She just couldn't believe this was what she wanted. This episode is about why that happens — and why it happens more than anyone talks about. There's a Harvard study on it. A Nobel Prize-winning researcher identified it. And after 25 years of coaching leaders across hundreds of companies, I've watched it play out quietly in corner offices, military promotions, and five-star kitchens. We are terrible at predicting how we'll feel when we arrive somewhere. We think the title will feel like something. It usually doesn't. And when it doesn't, most people assume something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong with them. They were just chasing a milestone when what they actually wanted was a feeling — and they never stopped to figure out what that feeling was. This episode covers: — The real story behind a coaching client's SVP promotion (and why she was near tears two weeks in) — The arrival fallacy: why humans consistently overestimate how happy they'll be when they get what they want — A 2010 Nobel Prize-winning study on money and life satisfaction — and what the number actually looks like in today's economy — Why the higher up you go, the less of the work you actually loved you get to do — The difference between chasing a milestone and chasing a feeling — and why only one of them can actually be planned for — The worst professional experience of my career, what I thought I was chasing, and what I was actually chasing If you've ever arrived somewhere you worked hard to get and felt nothing — or less than nothing — this one is for you. Most leaders say they want feedback. What they actually want is feedback delivered by the right person, in the right tone, at the right time — and that is not how feedback works. In this episode, a real coaching session reveals three things most leaders get wrong about upward feedback: they never formally ask for it, they dismiss it based on the source rather than the content, and they defend themselves the moment it arrives — which guarantees they stop receiving it altogether. According to a 2024 Gallup study, only 42% of US employees have ever had the formal chance to give their manager feedback. Only 24% have formally rated their manager's performance. That means most leaders are making decisions about their teams with almost no data on how they are actually perceived. This episode covers: — Why "I have an open door policy" is not the same as asking for feedback — The email framework to use before every one-on-one (with the exact questions) — Why we accept feedback from people we like and dismiss the same feedback from people we don't — What defensiveness costs you — and why it compounds quietly over time — The difference between saying "you can be honest with me" and actually building the trust that makes honesty possible If you manage people, are working toward a leadership role, or have ever wondered why your team seems hesitant to tell you the truth — this one is worth your time. Everyone says they're stressed. But what if stress has become more than a feeling—what if it's become part of your identity? In this episode, Catie Campbell challenges the idea that being busy, overwhelmed, and constantly stressed is normal. After working with thousands of leaders, she has noticed that many people unknowingly build their self-worth around stress, using it to feel important, productive, or needed. Catie explains why stress should be treated as information rather than identity, how an unhealthy attachment to stress can affect leadership and relationships, and why so many people struggle to disconnect from work—even when they're supposed to be resting. Through personal stories, coaching insights, and practical reflection questions, this episode will help you identify your own stress habits and rethink the role stress plays in your life. If you've ever answered "How are you?" with "Busy" or "Stressed," this conversation is for you.
Feeling stuck isn’t about lacking ambition — it’s usually about fear, overthinking, insecurity, or patterns people don’t realize they’re repeating. In this episode, executive coach Catie Campbell breaks down why high performers, executives, entrepreneurs, and leaders often feel trapped even when they already know what they want next. Catie shares stories from coaching Fortune 500 executives, military leaders, founders, and high achievers who looked successful on the outside but privately felt unable to move forward in their careers and lives. We talk about: Why self-awareness doesn’t automatically create change The psychology behind feeling “stuck” Fear of failure vs fear of the unknown Why successful people avoid making big moves Overthinking, rumination, and decision paralysis The hidden insecurity behind high achievement How past mistakes shape future decisions Why people repeat patterns they already recognize The difference between being thoughtful and being afraid Practical ways to break out of stuck patterns If you’ve ever known exactly what you wanted — but still couldn’t make yourself move — this episode is for you.
Most people think they're stuck because they need more information, better advice, or the next breakthrough idea. Catie Campbell argues the opposite. After more than 25 years in leadership and executive development, she has seen the same pattern repeatedly: people consume books, podcasts, courses, retreats, and self-help content looking for answers, but never take the action that would actually change their situation. In this episode, Catie explores why feeling stuck is often rooted in fear—not a lack of knowledge. From career dissatisfaction and leadership challenges to personal growth and entrepreneurship, she breaks down the hidden fears that keep people in the same place and shares practical questions to help you identify what's really holding you back. If you've been waiting for the next podcast, book, or course to change your life, this conversation may challenge you to take a different approach.
