How do police actually catch speeders today, and how much protection can a modern radar detector, laser jammer, or Waze really give you? I sat down with Ariel Bravy, the man behind Vortex Radar, one of the biggest sources for real-world radar detector, laser jammer, dash cam, and countermeasure testing. We cover radar vs. laser, K band vs. Ka band, why laser is so hard to detect, how laser jammers work, and how modern detectors filter false alerts from cars and automatic doors. Then we get into what matters for enthusiasts: the best setup for back roads, highways and canyon driving, whether directional arrows are worth it, how Waze fits into the picture, what happens with instant-on radar, clean installations for a Porsche, and what Ariel would buy today. We also talk about moving radar, laser, photo enforcement, aircraft enforcement, and the next generation of systems designed to be harder to detect. Porsche makes some very good electric cars. But are they actually the best EVs? I wanted to answer that question with someone who has driven nearly everything. Jonny Lieberman is Senior Features Editor at MotorTrend, host of Driving With Jonny, co-host of The InEVitable, and a regular on Spike’s Car Radio. He has driven everything from early Porsche 911s to the Taycan Turbo GT Weissach with the Manthey kit around the Nürburgring. And Jonny has opinions. We talk about what Porsche gets right with the Taycan, Macan EV and new electric Cayenne, where Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are ahead, why Porsche still refuses to embrace one-pedal driving, and whether removing the engine and sound takes away part of what makes a Porsche feel special. We also get into one of the most interesting opportunities in the Porsche market right now: depreciation. When a Porsche that originally cost well over $100,000 can suddenly be bought used for $40,000 to $50,000, should Porsche enthusiasts start paying attention? Most Porsche owners spend years worrying about mileage, paint, value, and keeping the car perfect. Kris Clewell has put well over 100,000 miles on his 1972 Albert Blue Porsche 911T, driven it across the country, taken it down roads most owners would never consider, and he thinks we may be missing the point. Kris is the co-founder of Overcrest, host of the Overcrest Podcast, photographer, filmmaker, writer, and one of the people whose work helped shape the way I think about old cars and road trips. He also happens to own the same year and color Porsche as I do, a 1972 Albert Blue 911T. What started as a conversation about those two cars turned into something much bigger. This ended up being one of my favorite conversations I've had on ElevenAfterNine. If you own a Porsche, an old car, a motorcycle, or anything else that gives you an excuse to go somewhere, I think there is something in this episode for you. The car isn't the point. What you do with it is. IN THIS EPISODE • More than 100,000 miles in Kris's 1972 Porsche 911T • How cheap Volkswagens eventually led Kris to Porsche • Rebuilding his first 911SC himself • The $150,000 offer that almost bought his 911 • Why his kids are one reason he may never sell it • Why he drives a valuable air-cooled Porsche on gravel • Why Kris considers paint a wear item • Cars as tools for exploration • Why you shouldn't waste the "in-between" • Driving, solitude, and flow state • The emotional moment that created Overcrest • What makes an Overcrest Rally different • How Kris scouts routes to create real experiences • The incredible Renault Le Car story from rural Oregon FOLLOW KRIS CLEWELL & OVERCREST Overcrest: https://overcrestproductions.com Overcrest Rally: https://overcrestproductions.com/pages/rally Overcrest Podcast: https://overcrestproductions.com/pages/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@overcrestproductions Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/overcrestproductions WATCH DAS ZIEL Kris Clewell and Alex Nelson's cross-country film featuring Kris's 1972 Porsche 911: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGtKUcGBBwE ElevenAfterNine Website & Porsche Consulting: https://www.elevenafternine.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ElevenAfterNine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theelevenafternine/ Contact: 11afternine@gmail.com ElevenAfterNine is an independent enthusiast podcast and is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Dr. Ing. h.c. Are Porsche owners spending thousands more for performance they can barely use? This week on ElevenAfterNine, I sit down with Manny Alban, former National President and current Technical Director of the Porsche Club of America, to talk about why the "base" Porsche may actually be one of the smartest and most enjoyable cars in the lineup. Manny has driven an enormous range of Porsches, from base Carreras and Boxsters to GT cars, Turbo S models, the 918 Spyder, and just about everything in between. His take surprised me. When Porsche sends cars to PCA for testing, the base models are often the ones everyone wants to drive. We get into what happens when you start adding horsepower, all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, carbon buckets, center locks, Sport-Tex, PASM, Porsche Sport Exhaust and other expensive options. At what point are you improving the car, and when are you simply buying more Porsche than you can actually use? We also talk about two used Porsches Manny believes are up and coming. IN THIS EPISODE: Why Porsche doesn't actually call the Carrera a "base 911" Why PCA testers often prefer the least expensive version Base Carrera vs Carrera S vs GTS Why lower horsepower can make a Porsche more fun Rear-wheel drive vs all-wheel drive Which Porsche options Manny always recommends Why carbon bucket seats may be the wrong choice Manny's problem with Sport-Tex and Alcantara steering wheels Why he thinks Porsche center locks make little sense on a street car The story behind PCA's 60th Anniversary Club Coupe How modern stability systems make today's Porsches easier to drive fast Why modern Porsches may simply be too fast for public roads Why the 991.1 Carrera may be one of today's best Porsche buys Why buyers shouldn't automatically fear an early Boxster Manual vs PDK The one Porsche Manny would choose if he could only have one CONNECT WITH MANNY AND THE PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA: Porsche Club of America: https://www.pca.org/ PCA Insider Podcast: https://podcast.pca.org/ PCA Insider on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/porsche-club-insider/id1599573815 PCA YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/porscheclubofamerica PCA Tech Tactics: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCZmxzg99WQxxBgFOwP1r5O6yfBGTRIsA CONNECT WITH ELEVENAFTERNINE: Website: https://elevenafternine.com/ Porsche Buyer Consulting: https://elevenafternine.com/consulting.html YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ElevenAfterNine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theelevenafternine Listen to Eleven After Nine: https://shows.acast.com/eleven-after-nine Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/eleven-after-nine-a-porsche-culture-podcast/id1887344928 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0fpVL61pWEZDkaygT7cGZh CONTACT: 11afternine@gmail.com QUESTION FOR YOU: Would you rather own a well-optioned base Carrera or spend the extra money for a Carrera S or GTS? Could babying your Porsche actually be shortening the life of its engine? This week on Eleven After Nine, I sit down with Lake Speed Jr., better known as The Motor Oil Geek, for a conversation every Porsche owner should hear. Lake is a Certified Lubrication Specialist, Oil Monitoring Analyst, Porsche owner, founder of SPEEDiagnostix, and one of the people behind the development of Driven Racing Oil. He has spent years studying used oil samples and what they can tell us about engine wear. We start with one of the most debated issues in the Porsche world, bore scoring. Is the commonly quoted 2% bore-scoring rate really the whole story? Lake explains what he found after looking at thousands of oil samples, why elevated iron, aluminum and silicon matter, and why a single oil analysis tells you far less than watching the trend over several oil changes. Then we get into the part that surprised me most. Most Porsche owners know the cars. Very few ever get to hear how the decisions behind them were actually made. My guest this week is Hugh Robinson, the former Porsche designer who spent 15 years inside Porsche during one of the most important periods in the company's modern history. Hugh helped bring the original Cayenne interior to production, worked on the production interior of the Carrera GT, and created the design that became the 981 Boxster and Cayman. And he has some stories. We get into the internal decisions, arguments, compromises and engineering problems that shaped cars many of us now have sitting in our garages. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why Porsche believed in the Cayenne when many enthusiasts thought it would destroy the company • How the Cayenne helped give Porsche the money and confidence to build cars like the GT3 and GT4 • Why Hugh thought Porsche should take the Cayenne racing at Dakar • The real reason the Carrera GT was created alongside the Cayenne • How the Carrera GT's famous high-mounted wooden shifter almost disappeared from the production car • The engineering work required to save that shifter • Why the 918 Spyder needed to debut before the 981 Boxster and Cayman • Why Hugh deliberately wanted the 981 to stop looking like a smaller 911 • The single design decision that gave Hugh enough freedom to completely change the 981's shape • What Hugh wanted on the 981 that Porsche would not approve • Why he believes the Boxster should never be considered simply the Porsche you buy when you cannot afford a 911 • Hugh's ideal version of the 981 Boxster • The color combination he originally imagined for the 981 • His defense of the controversial 996 headlights • Why he believes the 996 and early Boxster are finally getting the appreciation they deserve • The one Porsche Hugh would choose if he could put anything in his garage This is one of my favorite conversations I've had on ElevenAfterNine. If you love Porsche design, the 981 generation, Carrera GT, Cayenne, 996, or simply want to know how these cars actually went from sketches and clay models to production, I think you're going to enjoy this one. Porsche owners love upgrading their cars. But when does an upgrade actually make your Porsche worse? Andy Hendriksen from the "While You're In There" YouTube channel joins me again for a detailed conversation about one of the easiest places to spend thousands of dollars unnecessarily: suspension. We get into coilovers, OEM suspension, worn shocks, bushings, control arms, alignment, corner balancing, tires, ride height and the expensive parts Porsche owners are often convinced they need. Andy has tried Bilstein, KW, KONI, Öhlins and plenty of factory Porsche setups across everything from the 993 and 996 to the 987. His conclusion might surprise you. -------------------------------------------------- ⏱️ CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS -------------------------------------------------- 00:00 - Sunday Morning Catch-Up & Emergency Pancakes 01:29 - PCA Downeast Region "Porsches in the Park" & Dempsey Center 03:37 - Detailing Tools, Polishing Paint & Flow State 08:00 - How Do You Know Your Porsche Suspension Is Shot? 13:10 - How Worn Rear Suspension Ruins Front Steering Feel 16:40 - OEM vs. Aftermarket: Coilovers, Monoballs & Over-Adjustability 25:15 - DIY Mechanical Tips: Rust, Safety & The Spring Compressor Rule 31:15 - Why OEM Porsche Suspension Design Is Underrated 34:25 - The OEM-Plus Sweet Spot (987 Spyder Springs & Koni Sports) 37:15 - Ohlins Road & Track: The Ultimate Street Setup 39:55 - The Monoball Mistake: Why Solid Bushings Ruin Street Porsches 43:12 - Proper Alignment Mechanics, Kinematic Toe & Corner Balancing 49:50 - String Alignments vs. The $10,000 CSM Performance Laser System 56:30 - The Single Best Driving Upgrade: Tires & Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 01:01:17 - Guessing Andy’s New Mystery Porsche (Engine in Back, 3 Pedals) 01:06:38 - Introducing Elferlog: The Digital Maintenance Logbook for Porsches -------------------------------------------------- 🔗 MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE & FEATURED LINKS -------------------------------------------------- • Track & Organize Your Porsche Records: https://elferlog.com • CSM Performance Alignment Systems: https://csmperformance.com/ • Dempsey Center (Cancer Support Services): https://www.dempseycenter.org/ • PCA Downeast Region: https://der.pca.org/ Amazon links below. A "Clean CARFAX" report is supposed to give you total peace of mind—but it can easily give you a false sense of security. In this episode of Eleven After Nine, Derek breaks down 7 hidden secrets, red flags, and nuances hiding in plain sight inside vehicle history reports. Whether you’re hunting for a Porsche 911, Boxster, Cayman, or any enthusiast car, relying solely on a clean report can cost you thousands—or make you walk away from an absolute bargain. In This Episode, We Cover: Why a "clean" CARFAX doesn't mean a car was never in an accident. The simple VIN swap trick unscrupulous sellers use to trick buyers. How to spot winter drivers vs. stored garage queens using service months. Why CARFAX frequently inflates ownership numbers (and how to verify the real count). All product links below** This week on the ElevenAfterNine Podcast my professional detailer answers the Porsche car care questions you email me most — paint correction, ceramic coating, PPF, proper washing, claying, tire shine, and why Porsche headlights are a restoration nightmare. I sat down with Kris from Northeast Detailing in Hooksett, NH — the guy who's cared for my own cars for years, from Bertie (my 1972 911T) to a 100k-mile daily — to get straight, no-hype answers on how to actually protect and care for your Porsche's paint. If you've ever wondered whether a new Porsche off the lot needs paint correction, how many buckets you really need to wash it, whether that "waterless wash" at the car show is scratching your paint, or why most shops refuse to film your headlights with PPF — check this out and leave comments below! Is the Porsche 996 or early 997 a radioactive ticking time bomb, or is the internet completely blowing the IMS bearing issue out of proportion? Today, we're cutting through the forum noise and going straight to the horse's mouth. I sit down with my friend Charles Navarro, the founder of LN Engineering—the company synonymous with fixing the infamous water-cooled Porsche intermediate shaft issues since the early 2000s. We break down the actual engineering decisions behind the M96 and M97 engines, the brutal financial reality that nearly bankrupted Porsche in the '90s, and the real mathematical difference between a 1% and an 8% failure rate. Charles shares actionable advice for buyers and owners, explaining why garage queens are at the highest risk, how to properly update a non-serviceable bearing, and why he’d personally rather own an early water-cooled car over anything built post-2017. If you've been too paralyzed by analysis paralysis to buy your dream 911, Boxster, or Cayman, this episode is exactly what you need to hear. Stop waiting for life to begin. Buying a Porsche is the ultimate enthusiast dream, but let’s be honest: when it comes down to actually signing the paperwork on a 10, 15, or 20-year-old German sports car, absolute panic sets in. In this episode, we address a brilliant question from viewer Twingo Ease that hits right at the heart of the enthusiast struggle: How do you justify spending $50k to $80k on an older Porsche when that exact same money can buy you a brand-new, highly reliable sports car with a factory warranty? Before you run down to the dealership to buy a new BMW M2 or Toyota Supra, we need to talk about the brutal financial reality of absolute dollars, depreciation curves, and what happens after a car drops off the depreciation cliff. We’re breaking down the data, looking at the hard numbers, and giving you the honest truth about what you're actually paying for. Stop waiting for life to begin. Get out and drive. We are back with Joe Finkel from FCP Euro! In this episode, we tackle a brilliant factory suspension "cheat code" for water-cooled Porsches, bring you boots-on-the-ground stories from Porsche Parade, and discuss the absolute baller move of street-parking a $2M Porsche 959 in a rainstorm. But first... Derek has to confess his sins. After preaching the gospel of DIY wrenching, a nightmare of rusted exhaust manifold hardware and a crazy schedule forced him to do the unthinkable: he outsourced his Fister exhaust install and DT40 oil change. Once the guilt is cleared, Joe breaks down how Porsche silently updated older lower control arm blueprints to mirror modern 718 geometry—and how you can score this massive handling upgrade on a budget. We also debate the "500-HP cap" for usable street performance and name the #1 diagnostic tool every owner needs in their garage. 🛠️ WEBSITES & RESOURCES MENTIONED: Lemon Manuals (Free OEM Service Manuals): https://lemon-manuals.la 914-6 Infonet (Classic Air-Cooled Workshop Manuals): http://p914-6info.net/Manuals.htm FCP Euro DIY Guides: Check out @FCPEuro on YouTube for step-by-step Porsche maintenance. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 – Catching up with Joe Finkel & FCP Euro Summer Rush 01:25 – Confessions of a Porsche Poser: The Fister Exhaust Drama 03:15 – The Oil Change Absolution (Driven DT40 Oil) 05:05 – Wrenching vs. Time Management: Balancing Life & Projects 06:37 – What Makes the Fister 997 Exhaust So Special? 09:22 – Triple Zero "Rare Shades" Event: A Masterclass in PTS Colors 13:48 – The $300 Suspension Cheat Code: 718 Control Arms on Older Porsches 20:13 – Free Workshop Manual Hacks: Lemon Manuals & 914-6 Infonet 26:30 – Left Turn: Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR Motorcycle Adventures) 29:35 – Inside Porsche Parade at Lake Placid: Summer Camp for Adults 32:41 – Baller Status: The Rain-Driven, Street-Parked Porsche 959 34:00 – The Great Concours Debate: Art Pieces vs. Dirty Drivers 44:30 – First Looks: The New Electric Cayenne & Macan Tech Specs 46:39 – The 500-HP Cap: How Much Horsepower is Actually Usable? 51:23 – GT3 vs. GT3 RS: Is the Aero Worth the Jump? 53:16 – The #1 Specialized Porsche Tool Every Owner Needs in Their Garage 1:03:30 – Outro & See You Next Tuesday! 🎙️ CONNECT WITH ElevenAfterNine: Podcast: Available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major platforms. This week I sat down with Zack Klapman, co-host of The Smoking Tire and the man behind the Hilarious car-nerd game show Driver's Test, to map the whole restomod world for anyone who's new to it. We get into what these cars actually are, what they cost, and whether a one and a half million dollar Porsche can possibly be worth the money. From there we wander, the way these talks do, into the Lexus LFA, the Audi R8, hydraulic versus electric steering, why modern engines keep grenading, and the most useful thing Zack said all night: power gets boring, and the base model is usually the smarter buy. If you've heard me preach that on this channel, you'll like where this one goes. Zack has driven the stuff most of us only get to read about, and he talks about it like a normal person, which is the whole point of this show. The 996 Turbo is the most supercar you can buy for sports-car money — and the one a lot of people are still too scared to own. So Derek sat down with Andy from the "While You're In There" Youtube Channel to settle it: is the bargain-Turbo reputation real, or are those coolant pipes a clock you'll regret ignoring? They get into the Mezger engine and why it sidesteps the IMS and bore-scoring drama, what these cars are actually like to drive once they're dialed in, and exactly what to look for before you buy one. Plus a detour into Andy's 987.2 base Boxster — the port-injected 2.9 nobody talks about — and the auction that sold it for nearly double. Nick Murray joins ElevenAfterNine for a conversation about what's actually worth owning in the Porsche lineup right now — and his answer just might ruffle some feathers in the GT3 community. We get into the Lemon Law saga that put Nick on the map, why most first-time buyers over-spec their cars, the options that are a complete waste of money (PDCC, we're looking at you), and why Nick says he'd sell a free GT3 to buy something he'd actually drive. Plus: why the current Carrera T might be the most complete 911 Porsche makes, the truth about the understated horsepower numbers on the turbocharged cars, and a 993 cabriolet love letter that'll make you rethink the "coupes only" crowd. We think we’re protecting our Porsches by keeping them tucked away, but we might actually be accelerating their demise. In this episode of ElevenAfterNine , I’m joined by Porsche Master Mechanic Joe Finkel from FCP Euro to debunk the myths of "garage queen" ownership. From the "stasis" trap of battery maintainers to the hidden dangers of winter idling, we break down exactly why these cars need to be exercised—and how to do it without causing catastrophic engine damage. In this episode, we cover: The Battery Myth: Why "floating" your battery might be killing the plates. The "B-Word": Does Bore Scoring actually affect the 997.2 and 991 generations? Cold Start Danger: Why idling in your driveway is the worst thing you can do for your cylinder walls. The 194° Rule: The specific temperature you MUST see before driving hard. In this episode of ElevenAfterNine, Derek sits down with Jeff Lehman, author of "A Porsche Enthusiast's Guide to the 987.1 2.7 Boxster and Cayman" and the guy people actually trust on first-generation base Boxsters and Caymans. Jeff recently drove a 993, his own 987.1 Cayman, and a 997.1 back-to-back — and his takeaway flips conventional wisdom on its head. We get into why the base 2.7 motor is more fun than people give it credit for, why the IMS and bore scoring panic on 2007-2008 cars is overblown, and why the .1 cars might be the last honest value play left in the Porsche lineup.
