And a whole lot of laughs! This week on Watch You Talkin' About, we're hanging out with our friends Rich and Amy from 5280 Watch Company! If you've ever seen one of their watches in person, you know just how incredible they are. The craftsmanship, the handmade guilloché dials, the enamel work... these really are something special. We get into how 5280 Watch Company got started, what goes into making these amazing watches, and why Rich and Amy are so passionate about keeping traditional watchmaking techniques alive. But this conversation goes well beyond watches! We're talking Rolex, the value of microbrands, the watch community, and why expensive doesn't always mean better. There are some strong opinions, plenty of laughs, and absolutely no shortage of people giving each other a hard time. And somehow, we even end up talking about bourbon! This was easily one of the most fun conversations we've had on the podcast. Mickey Brown’s passion for watches began with his dad and brother. His career took him into aerospace engineering, designing lightweight structures for fighter jet radar systems. Parivas is where those two worlds meet. This week, we talk with the Parivas co-founder about the Exo.1, a mechanical watch built around an intricate 3D-printed metal lattice—and the years spent waiting for manufacturing technology to catch up with the idea. Mickey explains what it takes to turn metal powder into a finished watch, why seemingly tiny mistakes can scrap an entire case, and how details like replaceable tritium tubes and the “Solar Dusted” finish came to life. It’s a conversation about engineering, persistence, taking risks in independent watchmaking, and why knowing the people behind a watch can change what it means to you. What do custom knives and watches have in common? More than you might think! This week, we're joined by Laurent Doussot, founder of Doussot Watches, a Canadian microbrand bringing decades of creativity, craftsmanship, and design experience into the watch world. After meeting Laurent at the Toronto Timepiece Show and getting his watches on our wrists, we knew we had to hear more of his story. We talk about his 20+ years making custom knives, his journey into watch design, the incredible attention to detail behind the Doussot Onami collection, and the challenges of bringing a new watch brand to life. From 3D printing prototypes to Kickstarter challenges, unique case designs, and the importance of staying true to your vision, Laurent shares what goes into creating something that's truly your own. A week later, and we’re still not over the Toronto Timepiece Show. This week, we sit down and talk about some of the watches, brands and people that made the weekend so memorable — from incredible independent watchmaking and six-figure pieces that left us speechless, to brands we discovered for the first time and watches we haven’t stopped thinking about since. We also take you back onto the show floor with conversations from Mad Hudson, Warden Watch Studio and Elliot Brown, plus plenty of stories from a weekend surrounded by some of our favorite people in the watch community.J.N. Shapiro. Grönefeld. Bradley Taylor. Mad Hudson. Micromilspec. Maurice Lacroix. Christopher Ward. Makoto. And plenty more. Some watches impressed us. Some surprised us. A few nearly came home with us.And apparently, sometimes a watch is just… really fucking nice. What watch or brand would YOU have wanted to see in person?Like, subscribe and join the Watchers every week for more watch talk, reviews, interviews and whatever else Alex and Jordan get themselves into.
We survived the Toronto Timepiece Show… and what a weekend it was. After three packed days of watches, interviews, new friends, old friends, countless steps and very little sleep, Alex, Jordan and Rich sat down Sunday night to wrap up an experience we won’t soon forget. This isn’t a full breakdown of everything we saw at the show. It’s three tired watch nerds, still buzzing from the weekend, talking about the people, watches and moments that stood out. We talk about Rich’s first-ever watch show, a few new watch alerts, brands that impressed us, some incredible conversations, and just how special the watch community can be when you get everyone together in one place. Most of all, this episode is our chance to say thank you — to Jason Hutton and the entire Toronto Timepiece Show team, all the brands and creators, our friends in the community, and everyone who stopped to say hello and talk watches with us. We went to Toronto to cover a watch show. We came home with memories, new friendships, a few new watches… and a lot more stories to tell. What a weekend. ❤️⌚
One brand. Three watches. No budget. What could possibly go wrong? This week, Alex and Jordan go head-to-head in the Three Watch Challenge , each choosing one brand and building their ultimate three-watch collection. Alex goes with Zenith , while Jordan takes Glashütte Original — and with no budget to keep things remotely sensible, things escalate quickly. Divers, chronographs, tourbillons and some seriously ridiculous watches make the cut. Rich is back with another round of Nitpicks , we talk about the upcoming Toronto Timepiece Show , and take a look at a surprising new Rolex that definitely got our attention. But the big question is: Who built the better three-watch collection — Alex or Jordan? Check out the episode and let us know who gets your vote!
The Toronto Timepiece Show is going BIG — and Jason Hutton is back to tell us what’s in store for this year’s show. With 90+ exhibitors expected in Toronto, Jason gives us a look at how much the show has grown, the new Artisanal Lounge, some of the incredible brands and independent watchmakers attending, and even a tease about a new Grönefeld release that will be shown publicly at the show. We also talk about the success of the first Montreal Timepiece Show, the growth of the Canadian watch community, what it actually takes behind the scenes to put these shows together, and Jason’s vision for Timepiece World Journal. But before Jason joins us… Smartwatch Dick is BACK. Rich has been keeping notes while he’s been away, which means Alex and Jordan have some explaining to do. And this time he’s not stopping with us — Jonny from Walker & Crown managed to get himself on Rich’s radar after making the mistake of talking about smartwatches on our last episode. 😂 We’ll be at the Toronto Timepiece Show September 26 & 27 and can’t wait to meet more of you in person. Alex, Jordan & Smartwatch Dick
This week we're joined by Jonny from Walker & Crown, one of the newest British microbrands on the scene — and one that definitely isn't interested in playing it safe. Walker & Crown's story started with a lost watch belonging to Jonny's grandfather and eventually turned into something much bigger: Jonny and his wife Colette putting their own money behind a watch brand they genuinely believe in. We get into where the brand came from, why they chose to self-fund instead of going the Kickstarter route, the risks of launching a new microbrand, and the thinking behind their first collection, the Revival Series. And these aren't just four different dial colours. Laser Drift. The Clerk. Memphis Beat. Electric Lagoon. Each has its own personality and its own connection to the music, design and culture of the 1980s. Even the packaging gets in on it — including an actual cassette with an NFC-linked playlist created around each watch. Jordan has been wearing two of the watches, so we also get into what they're actually like on wrist, the 37x37mm square case, the finishing, bracelets, Miyota movements and some of the little details that surprised us. £379. Self-funded. Small production runs. No waiting a year for a Kickstarter watch to hopefully show up. This was a fun one. Jonny fit right in, we went completely off the rails a few times, and by the end of it you'll probably understand why we're pretty damn excited to see where Walker & Crown goes from here. ⌚ WALKER & CROWN Website: walkerandcrown.com Instagram: @walkerandcrown Facebook: Search “Walker & Crown” You can register your interest directly through the Walker & Crown website for launch updates and early access to the Revival Series. For the first time, we’re recording together in person! After 18 holes of golf, dinner and a couple of drinks, we sat down on the deck and did what we do best — talked watches. The big one this week is the Makoto Boken . Ryan from Makoto gave us a pretty bold challenge: put his Grade 5 titanium adventure watch up against our Christopher Ward C63 Sealander Extreme GMTs and tell him what we really think. Challenge accepted. After both spending some serious wrist time with the Boken, we talk about the incredible wearability, ridiculous lume, finishing, straps, what we’d change, and whether a watch at roughly half the price can actually hang with the Christopher Ward. We also get into new watches, getting the next generation hooked on watches, wrestling, the upcoming Toronto Timepiece Show and, as always, plenty of completely unnecessary detours. 🏈 LAST CALL FOR OUR FREE NFL PICK ’EM POOL! We’ve got a Shipwrecked Watches Lost at Sea Ocean Blue up for grabs for the winner. Want in? Reach out to us or check our socials for details. ⌚ Makoto Watch Company Website: https://makotowatch.com Instagram: @makotowatchcompany So what do you think: Makoto Boken or Christopher Ward C63 Extreme GMT? Thanks for listening, Watchers. Now wind it up!
This week we’re playing a dangerous game: Buy It, Consider It, Kill It. Rolex, Omega or Tudor? Breitling, TAG Heuer or Zenith? G-Shock, Timex or Swatch? And what happens when we start throwing the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster and Tudor Black Bay into the mix? Some watches are getting bought, some are getting considered…and some are disappearing forever. We also get into Jordan selling another watch — this time to someone buying their first mechanical watch — and why seeing someone discover this hobby for the first time can bring back some of that excitement we sometimes lose as collectors. Plus, are luxury watch brands falling behind when it comes to advertising? We talk YouTube, social media, traditional advertising, clickbait and whether brands like Rolex, Vacheron Constantin and AP really need to change the way they reach watch buyers. And now it’s your turn. BUY IT. CONSIDER IT. KILL IT. Rolex / Omega / Tudor Zenith / Breitling / TAG Heuer G-Shock / Timex / Swatch Omega Seamaster / Breitling Superocean / TAG Heuer Aquaracer Rolex Submariner / Omega Seamaster / Tudor Black Bay Tourbillon / Perpetual Calendar / Minute Repeater Annual Calendar / Perpetual Calendar / Moonphase World Timer / GMT / Dual Time Stainless Steel / Titanium / Bronze Swiss / Japanese / German Patek Philippe / Audemars Piguet / Vacheron Constantin Drop your picks in the comments — or give us your own three and make us choose. And as always, if you enjoy hanging out and talking watches with us, like, subscribe and join us every Wednesday for another episode of Watch You Talkin’ About.
This week on Watch You Talkin' About, Alex and Jordan dive into the wild collision of pro wrestling and high-end horology. They break down the massive controversy surrounding WWE superstar Roman Reigns flexing a $500,000 skeletonized Audemars Piguet Tourbillon on live TV, and discuss the internet backlash over "watch snobbery". Plus, Jordan shares his full recap and highlight reel from his very first RedBar YYC meetup, showcasing incredible grail pieces like a 1970s Patek Philippe Calatrava, an Omega Flightmaster, and a Tudor Submariner. Later, the guys share details on how to join the official Watch You Talkin' About NFL Pick’em Pool—sponsored by Shipwreck Watch Company—where the winner takes home a brand-new "Lost at Sea" diver! To wrap it up, Alex and Jordan unleash a round of hot takes on awful OEM watch bracelets, why the hatred for "hype watches" is total nonsense, and why social media creators need to wrap up their 20-second wrist rolls. Are microbrand watches actually innovating... or are they simply making the features we already love more affordable? This week we're diving into one of the biggest questions in modern watch collecting. We debate whether true innovation comes from brands like Rolex, MB&F and Christopher Ward, or whether microbrands are changing the industry by offering incredible value, better bracelets, micro-adjust clasps, unique dial designs and a closer connection to collectors. Along the way we also chat about: * Christopher Ward and the Bel Canto * MB&F and some of the wildest movements in watchmaking * Rolex innovation * Zelos, Erebus, Venezianico, Makoto and other standout microbrands * Why premium watch straps matter * The AliExpress straps we've been using * Smartwatch Dick's Nitpicks (including some self-inflicted corrections!) Do collectors eventually fall out of love with their watches? The history behind Timex and Snoopy. We also check out two incredible new releases from MB&F and Baltic, revisit our $2,500 Watch Collection Challenge, give a shout-out to some amazing listeners, and—as always—take a few unexpected detours into wrestling, sports, soccer, basketball, and somehow... pictures of Alex's feet.
