In the most raw episode I've had yet, Greg from @watches_on_blue talks his background including running away from home at a young age, foster care, adoption, and then a LE career ending with a fugitive task force (before retiring and re-starting as a deputy). We talk mental health, family, what @watches_on_blue is doing, a cool collaboration watch, and of course, watches.
Season 2 of the Terminal List drops this week...what better way to commemorate the occasion that having Jack Carr on the SBWC Podcast? We blast through Jack's Navy career before getting into some of the deep stuff: family, reading, writing, and a discussion of society as a whole. Of course, we talk watches... Ben from Tertia Watches discusses his flagship watch, the Odyssey, which I've gotten a change to wear for a little bit leading up to this interview. We talk about Ben's background in LE and an Infantryman in the National Guard. We talk about the impact of 2020 on policing, specifically for Ben in a major metropolitan area, causing him to leave for a federal agency. We discuss the challenges of creating a watch essentially from scratch instead of putting together a watch from catalog parts.
Marine Corps Infantry veteran and CEO of Staccato 2011 Buck Pierson discusses his background, his deployments, and his career trajectory to becoming the CEO of Staccato 2011. We talk about recent social media drama surrounding the company, the culture he seeks to create as a leader, and of course, watches.
Christian (@theoandharris) gives us some insider perspective on the watch world; he declares war on pretty much everyone (I usually ask for a "horological hot take" and he decided to just keep going with it). We talk business (and how he's been successful as an entrepreneur) before we get philosophical and discuss manhood, and how his recent passion for hunting and the outdoors plays into it.
Ferrell Armstrong of @stillridgefarms gives us the behind the scenes of college admissions before we get philosophical on hunting, manhood, family life, and mental health. Of course, we end the episode off with watches.
Decorated Rescue Swimmer George Cavallo shares some tales from his days jumping out of helicopters to save lives. Stay tuned for a crazy plot twist after he gets out of the Coast Guard and how he turned a negative into a positive. George's story is one of resilience; his book (Sharks and Daisies) is available on Amazon. I will also do a giveaway with my copy.
I sit down with Adam of Police Posts/Effective Fitness Training/Effective Fitness Combatives (and my former part time employer). We talk about his career trajectory within law enforcement, leaving the job to pursue training, issues within how LE training is done, faith, family, and watches. As always, if you've got feedback, please reach out to me on IG (@9mm.musashi).
Gem chats all about British tool watch brand Elliot Brown--the military heritage, the insane tests they've done just to see when the watch will break, and travel. There's some exciting news about a future model exclusively for our listeners!
The legendary @movementsofaction takes us behind the scenes of government contracting; his job has taken him all over the globe in support of various military, intelligence, and other organizations. In his words, he is the guitar tuner who hands the guitar off to the "rockstars." We talk family, work-life balance, faith, and of course, watches.
I sit down with Brett, a pilot for a major airline, and we discuss recent fatal aviation incidents and steps pilots take to keep their passengers safe. We talk about the path to becoming a pilot, and get philosophical on living life and collecting watches.
Charles, the owner of OW Watches, goes over the rich history of Ollech and Wajs and details the connection to the military, as well as their emphasis on Swiss manufacturing. After my own experiences wearing OW M-52 AU for a week, and hearing Charles talk about OW, I'm thoroughly impressed by the brand. You can find more at www.ow-watch.com or @ollechandwajs on IG.
Bradley (@patient0zero on IG), a medically retired LAPD officer, discusses his upbringing in the Midwest, his path to the elite Metro Division of the LAPD, and what seemed like a minor injury during an apprehension of a suspect. Due to misdiagnosis and delays caused by COVID, the injury sat untreated, resulting in a nonfunctional leg with excruciating pain. We discuss the headache of dealing with city medical and the IOD process, and we talk mental health and the impact something like this can have. Throughout the conversation, Bradley gives the listener specific advice if, God forbid, you find yourself in a situation where you've been injured in the line of duty. Of course, we dive into Bradley's watch collection journey. This raw conversation takes you behind what happens after an incident is over, and the aftermath begins.
Teddy, an Air Force EOD tech and co-founder of Grey Area Co walks us through the training pipeline to become EOD, as well as starting a small business (Grey Area Co) and what goes into making leather watch straps.
Joe Dawson highlights his 14 year military career as a Navy SEAL, including incorporating lessons learned from the civilian competitive shooting world to NSW's sniper training. We talk about multiple injuries, and his attitude to get him through numerous training accidents/injuries. We get philosophical on raising children, your "why," and how to view the world. This was a great conversation that I'm happy to bring to you. Be sure you're following Sketchy Boyz Watch Club on IG as well as Facebook, and check out the site. As always, feel free to reach out to me on IG: @9mm.musashi or joey@sketchyboyzwatchclub for feedback or if you have a guest you want to hear.
"Tool watch. Redefined." Andreas from Fortis chats with me about the history, the brand direction, the collections, and the ethos behind the company. If Fortis isn't on your radar right now and you're in a line of work which is rough on gear, you might want to have a closer look.
Raph (also known as @redhats_slowgats) discusses his law enforcement career and the path to full time range staff at a major police department; we also get into his competitive shooting track and the path to Grandmaster in USPSA. We talk about the benefits of performance/practical shooting for military/LE settings, and of course, Raph's watch collection.
Daniel Bursch shares his experiences as a Naval Academy graduate and A-6E Intruder bombadier/navigator turned NASA Astronaut. Dan did 4 spaceflights, three of which were Space Shuttle missions, with the fourth being a 196-day mission aboard the International Space Station (at the time setting the record at the time for longest duration spaceflight for an American astronaut). We discuss the difficulties of being away from family while in space, and the takeaways from an astronaut's experience that apply to every day life.
An excellent, philosophical discussion with Huiy Tang on his road to RZE Watches from being dismissive of micro brands. We get into Huiy's background, and what RZE is working to accomplish. I got to wear a Resolute Stratos for the week leading up to this interview. I was impressed by the watch, but also Huiy’s history, humility and work ethic. This was a great conversation that got pretty philosophical.
Jett Cruzz Lanoha talks about his unique pathway to becoming a SEAL--enlisting at an older age than most, ASVAB setbacks, two rollbacks during the pipeline, family struggles in training, and post-military life/business.
