Welcome to The Gates in Real Life, where Heidi and Melissa - two holistic coaches, friends, and Human Design nerds - gather for casual, heartfelt conversations about the weekly Sun transits in Human Design and Gene Keys. We’re all about keeping it down-to-earth and practical. No human design experience needed. Expect to learn about the gates via our thoughts and experiences - not a boring regurgitation of someone else’s teachings. We’re here to live it out loud—through the lens of business, healing, relationships, creativity, and the real messiness of being human. Each week, we dive into the current gate the Sun is transiting, unpacking the energy, the Gene Key shadow/gift/siddhi, and how it’s showing up in our lives and client work. It’s less textbook, more tea time. Think of it like being a fly on the wall - come sit with us, reflect with us, and maybe see your own patterns in a new light. Perfect for sensitive souls, intuitive entrepreneurs, or anyone looking to live more aligned with cosmic timing (without the jargon or pressure to be perfect).

Why do the same types of people, relationships, and situations keep showing up in your life? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 44 in Human Design and Gene Key 44 - the Gate of Alertness - and the journey from the shadow of Interference, to the gift of Teamwork, to the Siddhi of Synarchy. We talk about recognizing repeating patterns in relationships and business, why we sometimes need to experience the same lessons more than once, and how awareness can help us respond differently. We also explore the fascinating concept of human fractals, trusting your own Authority rather than looking for answers outside yourself, and what it means to build relationships and businesses through aligned collaboration rather than competition or hierarchy. What if the patterns that keep repeating aren't happening to you, but are inviting you to recognize something you haven't seen before? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Melissa’s Offerings: If this conversation resonated with you, you’ll find more inside my Substack, Remembering Who You Are ... where Human Design meets business, personal growth, and the deeper work of living in alignment with who you already are. https://substack.com/@melissanaslund •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul . What if the reason you're exhausted isn't because you're not doing enough, but because you're trying too hard to make something happen? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 34 in Human Design and Gene Key 34 - the Gate of Power - and the journey from the shadow of Force, to the gift of Strength, to the Siddhi of Majesty. We talk about the difference between true power and force, why pushing harder doesn't always lead to better results, and how easily we can mistake effort, control, and constant action for progress. We also explore how this shows up in business and everyday life: following strategies that don't feel right, looking to experts for answers instead of trusting ourselves, and exhausting our energy trying to make things happen on someone else's terms. Along the way, we get into Sacral Authority, Generators and Manifesting Generators, the importance of listening to your body's signals, and why following what genuinely excites you can feel so different from doing what you think you should do. And the conversation takes us somewhere deeper: What if your greatest contribution isn't about what you accomplish, but about having the courage to express who you really are? Maybe true strength isn't about working harder, controlling more, or proving what you're capable of. Maybe your greatest power emerges when you stop forcing life to go your way, and start trusting the way that's uniquely yours. So here's our invitation: Where in your life or business are you trying to force something to happen, and what might change if you got out of your own way? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul . What if the thing you're afraid to let go of is the very thing keeping you from moving forward? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 32 in Human Design and Gene Key 32 - the Gate of Continuity - and the journey from the shadow of Failure, to the gift of Preservation, to the Siddhi of Veneration. We talk about the fear of failure, why we hold on to things long after they've stopped serving us, and how difficult it can be to distinguish between something worth preserving and something we're simply afraid to release. We also explore how this shows up in business and life: staying in a career or relationship even when you know it's time to move on, questioning whether an unsuccessful launch means you've failed, and holding on so tightly to money, security, or a particular outcome that you leave little room for something new. Along the way, we get into trusting your body's instinctive knowing, recognizing the beliefs that keep you playing small, and reframing failure as an experience rather than a reflection of your worth. And eventually, the conversation takes us somewhere deeper: What if success isn't about holding on long enough to make something work? What if it's about developing the discernment to know what deserves to continue... and what has already served its purpose? Maybe letting go isn't failure. Maybe it's how you make room for what's next. So here's our invitation: What in your life or business is worth preserving... and what might you finally be ready to release? You get a feeling that something is off. Your body seems to know something before your mind does. But how do you know whether that feeling is intuition... or fear? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Gate 57 in Human Design and Gene Key 57 —the Gate of Intuitive Clarity—and the journey from the shadow of Unease, to the gift of Intuition, to the Siddhi of Clarity. We talk about the low-level hum of unease that can keep us worrying about the future, why the mind tries to create certainty by making plans and building external security, and how easy it is to override the subtle signals our bodies are already giving us. We also explore what it actually looks like to listen to the body - from big decisions to something as simple as noticing what you prefer in this moment - and why intuition may be less about receiving some dramatic message and more about becoming sensitive to the quiet information that's already there. Along the way, we get into nervous-system responses, stress, embodiment, sensitivity to other people's energy, and the role that sound and vibration can play in Gate 57's intuitive awareness. Ultimately, this conversation brings us back to presence. Because unease lives largely in what might happen next. Clarity comes when we return to what is actually here now. Where are you already listening to your body, and where might you be ready to listen a little more closely? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul . Do you want to be happy... or do you want to be right? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 18 in Human Design and Gene Key 18 - the Gate of Correction - and the journey from the shadow of Judgment, to the gift of Integrity, to the Siddhi of Perfection. We talk about the difference between judgment and discernment, why noticing what could be better can be an incredible gift, and what happens when that same energy turns into criticism, comparison, perfectionism, or the need to prove that someone else is wrong. We also explore how this shows up in business: obsessing over the perfect website, funnel, offer, or strategy; using perfectionism to avoid deeper fears about being good enough; and learning to look at what's working and what isn't without making it mean something about your worth. And eventually, the conversation takes us somewhere even bigger: What happens when we stop trying to perfect ourselves and instead become curious about what might already be underneath all that judgment? Maybe improvement doesn't have to come from believing something is wrong. Maybe we can see what could be better, make the change, and still recognize the perfection of what already is. What if taking your business so seriously is actually getting in the way? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 46 in Human Design and Gene Key 46 - moving from the shadow of Seriousness, to the gift of Delight, to the Siddhi of Ecstasy. We talk about the pressure to get everything right, control outcomes, hit the goal, follow the strategy, and constantly worry about whether what you're doing is working. And we explore what becomes possible when you loosen your grip enough to make room for play, presence, intuition, and a little serendipity. We also get into the body's role in decision-making, why strategy and delight don't have to be mutually exclusive, and how following what genuinely lights you up can put you in places you never could have planned for. Because maybe you don't need to stop having goals or caring about your business. Maybe you just don't have to hold it all so tightly. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul . •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Melissa’s Offerings: If this conversation resonated with you, you’ll find more inside my Substack, Remembering Who You Are ... where Human Design meets business, personal growth, and the deeper work of living in alignment with who you already are. https://substack.com/@melissanaslund
In this one-year anniversary episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Human Design Gate 48 and Gene Key 48 through the themes of inadequacy, resourcefulness, wisdom, trust, and the fear of not knowing enough. We talk about imposter syndrome, the pressure to keep learning or preparing before you feel “ready,” and the difference between seeking more information from fear versus choosing growth from curiosity. We also explore what changes when you stop trying to solve everything intellectually and begin trusting your body, intuition, and inner resourcefulness instead. A big part of this conversation is the movement from “I don’t know enough” to “I don’t need to know” - and the freedom that can come from loosening your grip on certainty and trusting that the next answer can arrive when you actually need it. We also reflect on how these themes show up in business, money, decision-making, personal growth, and everyday life. And because this episode marks one full year of The Gates in Real Life , we’re also taking a moment to celebrate the conversations, growth, and lessons that got us here. In this episode: Gate 48 and the fear of inadequacy Imposter syndrome and “not enough” thinking Resourcefulness and trusting your inner well The role of intuition and the body Letting go of the need to know How fear, trust, and surrender show up in business and life Why wisdom may have less to do with knowing more and more to do with needing less certainty •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul .
Why does uncertainty so quickly turn into something is wrong ? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 36 in Human Design and Gene Key 36 - the Gate of Crisis - and the journey from the shadow of Turbulence, to the gift of Humanity, to the Siddhi of Compassion. We talk about why humans can be strangely drawn to drama (hello, reality TV), how uncertainty activates the nervous system, and what happens when we mistake discomfort for danger. We also bring Gate 36 into business: the urge to abandon something when it gets uncomfortable, assuming a setback means something isn't working, and how the story we tell ourselves about uncertainty can completely change the decisions we make. Along the way, we explore emotional maturity, victim mentality versus personal agency, failure, dark nights of the soul, and why some of our most difficult experiences can ultimately become catalysts for growth and compassion. The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate turbulence, but to how to move through it without automatically turning it into a crisis. What if the thing that feels like it's happening to you could somehow be happening for you?
What if the problem isn't having desires, but believing you'll finally feel better once you get what you want? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 30 in Human Design and Gene Key 30 (the Gate of Desire) and the spectrum from Desire, to Lightness, to Rapture. We talk about our tendency to chase the next goal, idea, business strategy, or version of success - and what happens when our peace becomes dependent on things turning out exactly as we hoped. We also explore the surprising role of mistakes and failure. What if desire actually exists, in part, to move us into experiences that don't go according to plan, and those experiences are how we learn, evolve, and contribute to something larger than ourselves? Along the way, we get into shiny-object syndrome, redefining success, Human Design Authority, the difference between desire and desperation, and how to move from grasping and forcing toward greater trust and surrender. Gate 30 isn't asking you to stop wanting things. It's asking whether you can want something deeply without clinging to how (or whether) it happens.
In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 59 in Human Design and the Gene Keys moving from the shadow of Dishonesty, to the gift of Intimacy, to the Siddhi of Transparency. And yes., we start with the infamous Coldplay kiss-cam scandal. Because for an episode about sexuality, secrecy, and what happens when something hidden gets projected onto a giant screen, it felt pretty fitting. But Gate 59 is about much more than sex. We explore what dishonesty can look like when it isn't actually lying, but holding back parts of ourselves because we're afraid of being fully seen. And we look at how that shows up in business through curated personas, performative marketing, vulnerability with clients, and the pressure to present the version of ourselves we think people want. We also talk about the relationship between intimacy and creativity, why authentic connection can feel surprisingly destabilizing, and how deeper trust creates space for true collaboration and co-creation. Ultimately, Gate 59 asks us to notice the walls we've built between ourselves and other people, and what might become possible if we allowed some of them to come down. Where are you holding something back, and what might change if you allowed yourself to be seen a little more fully? What if the thing that makes your business work isn't another strategy, but becoming more fully yourself? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 10 in Human Design and Gene Key 10, moving from the shadow of self-obsession to the gift of naturalness and ultimately the Siddhi of Being. Gate 10 is often associated with self-love, but this conversation goes much deeper than simply feeling good about yourself. It's about how self-love shows up in your behavior - the choices you make, the identities you hold onto, and whether you're allowing yourself to live and work as the person you naturally are. We talk about the pressure to become a "better" or more successful version of yourself, and how easily personal development and entrepreneurship can turn into trying to become someone else. We also explore what happens when you start letting those borrowed identities fall away and allow more of your actual voice, creativity, strengths, and personality to come through. And, of course, we bring it into business. Why are we so drawn to templates, swipe files, formulas, and strategies based on what worked for someone else? What happens when an effective strategy isn't sustainable for you ? And could the most differentiated, sustainable business actually come from discovering your natural way of marketing, coaching, creating, and connecting with people? We explore: The difference between becoming someone new and remembering who you already are How conditioning shapes the identities we perform Why authenticity can feel surprisingly scary The problem with copying someone else's successful business strategy If you've ever felt like building your coaching business requires you to become someone you're not, Gate 10 offers a very different possibility. Maybe your work isn't to create a better version of yourself. Maybe it's to let more of who you already are come through. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Heidi’s Offerings: Come join me on Substack, where I explore the middle path between business success and well-being for heart-led biz owners: substack.com/@servicewithsoul . •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Melissa’s Offerings: If this conversation resonated with you, you’ll find more inside my Substack, Remembering Who You Are ... where Human Design meets business, personal growth, and the deeper work of living in alignment with who you already are. https://substack.com/@melissanaslund Mentioned in this episode: tGIRL intro
What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your strategy, but the values quietly running beneath it? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Gate 50 in Human Design and the Gene Keys - the Gate of Values, also known as the Nurturing Guardian. Together, we unpack how inherited beliefs, unconscious conditioning, and even fear can subtly "corrupt the data" we use to make decisions in business and life. Through personal stories, practical coaching examples, and a surprising conversation about the game of telephone, we explore how reconnecting with your deepest values creates the stability to navigate uncertainty without abandoning yourself. In this conversation, we discuss: Why your values become your internal compass when business gets hard. How fear and conditioning distort your decision-making. The difference between external success and inner equilibrium. Why responsibility starts with your own thoughts, emotions, and choices. What Human Design and the Gene Keys reveal about trust, values, and creating a business that genuinely reflects who you are. How harmony isn't something you create... it's something you uncover. Whether you're a coach, entrepreneur, or simply exploring Human Design and the Gene Keys, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on building a business that feels aligned from the inside out. Leadership isn't about having all the answers. In this live episode of The Gates in Real Life, we explore Gate 7 in Human Design and the Gene Keys, and why authentic leadership has far less to do with authority and far more to do with service. If you've ever questioned whether you're "leader material," struggled with visibility, or felt uncomfortable stepping into a bigger role in your business, this conversation offers a completely different perspective. Rather than leading by control or certainty, we explore what becomes possible when you listen deeply, trust yourself, and create space for others to discover their own path. In this episode, we explore: Why leadership begins with listening, not having all the answers. The difference between leading through authority and leading through service. How self-doubt quietly limits your ability to help others. Why entrepreneurs often outgrow traditional ideas of leadership. The role of surrender, vision, and self-trust in building a meaningful business. What Gate 7 teaches about guiding others without asking them to become copies of you. Whether you're a coach, entrepreneur, or simply navigating your own next chapter, this conversation invites you to redefine leadership in a way that feels more authentic... and more human.
Do you ever feel uncomfortable calling yourself a leader or an expert? You're not alone. In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Gate 31 in Human Design and the Gene Keys - the Gate of Influence, often called the Reluctant Leader. We unpack why authentic leadership isn't about having all the answers, controlling the narrative, or building a following. Instead, it's about trusting your voice, expressing your vision, and empowering others to discover their own. Together, we explore how conditioning creates imposter syndrome, why the fear of being misunderstood keeps so many coaches quiet, and how true influence comes from embodiment rather than performance. In this conversation, we also discuss: Why leadership is different from authority or control. How conditioning shapes your definition of what a leader "should" look like. Why your vision often comes before certainty. The difference between influencing people and empowering them. Whether you're a coach, entrepreneur, or simply exploring your own path through Human Design and the Gene Keys, this episode will encourage you to question your beliefs about leadership and discover a more authentic way of showing up.
Have you ever followed someone else's strategy perfectly... only to realize your content no longer sounded like you? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Gate 8 in Human Design and the Gene Keys - the Gate of Contribution. Together, we unpack why trying to fit in often weakens your message, why your greatest contribution can never be copied, and what it really means to become a role model by simply being yourself. Along the way, we explore authenticity, leadership, visibility, entrepreneurship, and the surprising courage it takes to stop performing and start expressing your own unique style. In this conversation, we discuss: • Why following someone else's formula can disconnect you from your own voice. • The difference between fitting in and making your unique contribution. • What the shadow of mediocrity really looks like in business. • Why embodiment creates more impact than trying to impress people. Whether you're a coach, entrepreneur, or simply exploring your own path through Human Design and the Gene Keys, this conversation is an invitation to trust that your greatest contribution isn't becoming more like someone else... it's becoming more fully yourself.
What if failure in your business isn’t actually failure, but an unfinished cycle asking for your attention? In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , we explore Gate 42 through the lens of Human Design, Gene Keys, and the real-life experience of building a business. This gate carries the energy of growth through cycles... beginnings, endings, lessons, and the expectations we attach to all of it. We unpack how unmet goals, money stress, and the pressure to “make it happen” can keep coaches trapped in repeating patterns... and why true growth often begins when we loosen our grip. Inside this conversation, we explore: Why the same business struggles keep showing up How expectation creates suffering and attachment The difference between forcing and trusting What “failure” is really here to teach you How Human Design and Gene Keys can help you move through business cycles with more awareness Why celebration isn’t about everything going right, but honoring the process If you’ve ever felt stuck in the same loop of chasing goals, questioning yourself, or wondering why it feels harder than it should, this episode will help you see those cycles differently. Every coach has started something with excitement - a new offer, a new platform, a new marketing strategy, or a new chapter in business - only to wonder later why it never became what they hoped. In this episode of The Gates in Real Life , Heidi and Melissa explore Gate 53 in Human Design and the Gene Keys - the Gate of Beginnings. Together they unpack why this energy isn't simply about starting something new. It's about understanding cycles, allowing real growth to unfold, and learning the difference between feeling pressured to begin and being genuinely ready. The conversation explores why so many entrepreneurs find themselves repeatedly starting over, how expansion happens from the inside out, and why the wisdom you gain during a cycle is often more valuable than reaching the finish line as quickly as possible. Whether you're launching something new, questioning your direction, or feeling called into your next chapter, this episode offers a more grounded way to think about growth. In this episode, we explore: • Why new beginnings aren't always a green light to act. • The difference between pressure and true alignment. • How Gate 53 moves from immaturity to expansion through lived experience. • Why personal growth must precede sustainable business growth. • What this week's solar transit can teach coaches and entrepreneurs about trusting the process. In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, Heidi and Melissa explore Gate 39 in Human Design and the Gene Keys: the Gate of Provocation. This is the energy that stirs the pot, pushes buttons, and creates the friction needed for growth. But not all provocation is the same. At the shadow frequency, provocation comes from fear... unconsciously creating conflict, defensiveness, and disconnection. At the gift frequency, that same energy becomes dynamism... a powerful catalyst for truth, transformation, and movement. And at its highest expression, it opens the door to liberation. In this conversation, they explore how this gate shows up in coaching, marketing, family dynamics, and business growth... and why discomfort is often the doorway to your next level. They also unpack: Why being “too nice” as a coach can keep clients stuck How irritation often carries hidden wisdom The difference between provoking from fear vs provoking from love Why the strategies that work for someone else may drain you How to trust yourself instead of outsourcing your wisdom to the “gurus” If you’re a coach navigating visibility, client results, and the messy reality of growth, this episode will challenge you to look at where you might be avoiding the very friction that could set you free. Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t in avoiding discomfort, it’s in learning how to use it.
Do you ever feel guilty for not being consistent enough in your business? Maybe you've tried following the perfect content calendar, productivity system, or marketing plan only to find yourself burned out and wondering what's wrong with you. In this episode of The Gates in Real Life, Melissa and Heidi explore Human Design Gate 15, the Gate of Extremes, and its corresponding Gene Keys journey from Dullness to Magnetism to Fluorescence. They discuss why your natural rhythm may be one of your greatest business assets, and why trying to force consistency can actually diminish your impact. Together they explore: Why repetition without energy leads to burnout. The difference between checking boxes and creating from genuine magnetism. How trusting your own rhythm can make your marketing more effective. Why entrepreneurs experience emotional and energetic extremes (and why that's part of being human). The connection between self-worth, trust, and sustainable business growth. How Human Design can help coaches discover a way of working that feels aligned instead of exhausting. Perhaps most importantly, this conversation offers a refreshing reminder that you don't have to force the flower to bloom. Sometimes the greatest growth comes from expanding your capacity to trust yourself, embrace your unique rhythm, and allow success to unfold in its own timing. If you're a coach building a business that actually fits who you are, this episode will encourage you to stop fighting your nature, and start letting it become your greatest strength.
