What happens when scientific rigor meets a mother’s intuition? In this episode of The Inner Practice, host Jackie Vandertuin sits down with Dr. Theresa Lyons, Yale-trained scientist, autism educator, founder of AWEtism, and mom, to explore the emotional and practical realities of a parent who has a child child diagnosed with autism. Theresa shares how trusting her inner knowing changed the course of her life and work, and how she now helps families bridge the gap between what they’re told and what the science actually shows. Together, Jackie and Theresa dive into: What autism is and how diagnoses are made—and misunderstood. The moment Theresa’s intuition overrode the “wait and see” advice. The hidden grief, stress, and PTSD often carried by parents. Why a parent’s nervous system profoundly shapes a child’s behavior. Research showing that when parents receive trauma-informed care, children’s behaviors can improve. Practical ways overwhelmed caregivers can start regulating their own nervous systems. The role of mindfulness, meditation, and yoga in sustainable advocacy and daily life. Theresa also offers a rare blend of evidence and empathy—naming common gaps between guidance given to families and the scientific literature, and sharing a hopeful, realistic path forward anchored in nervous system health, presence, and advocacy. If you’re a parent, caregiver, clinician, or anyone curious about the intersection of neuroscience, compassion, and lived experience, this conversation will leave you informed, grounded, and hopeful. What if just a few moments of stillness could change the way you move through your entire day? In this episode of The Inner Practice , Jackie Vandertuin sits down with Dr. Theresa Lyons to explore how meditation became an anchor during one of the busiest seasons of her life. Beginning her meditation practice while completing her PhD, Theresa shares how carving out intentional moments of quiet helped her manage stress, regulate her nervous system, and navigate the demands of work, motherhood, and everyday life. Together, they discuss the science and simplicity of meditation, the importance of starting the day from a place of calm rather than chaos, and how our own regulation directly influences those around us. Theresa also reflects on using these practices to co-regulate with her daughter who is diagnosed with awetism, offering a powerful reminder that the greatest gift we can give others is often our own grounded presence. In this special anniversary episode of The Inner Practice , I pause to reflect on the first year of the podcast and the stories that have shaped it. What began as a space to explore yoga, mindfulness, and healing has become something far deeper: a collection of human stories about resilience, grief, transformation, self-love, and the quiet courage it takes to be honest with ourselves. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of listening to guests navigate addiction, illness, trauma, burnout, success, identity shifts, and profound personal awakening. While their journeys are all unique, the themes that emerged were strikingly universal: presence, acceptance, grace, and the return to breath. This episode is a reflection on what it means to hold space for these stories, and how they continue to shape my own understanding of healing and what it means to be human. At its core, this conversation is not about fixing ourselves, it’s about learning to meet ourselves fully. The Guesthouse by Rumi This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond. What if you could walk back through your life… and see it differently? In this episode of The Inner Practice , Jackie shares her short story, The Corridor of a Life —a story of memory, identity, and the quiet voice within that shapes how we see ourselves. Through a journey of moments—joy, pain, love, and loss—we are invited to witness how self-judgment can cloud even the most beautiful parts of our lives. And then… to look again. Through the lens of compassion. Through the lens of truth. Through the lens of love. This is a story about returning— to yourself, to your worth, and to the understanding that you were never meant to be anything other than fully human. The Corridor of a Life — A Story of Self-Worth, Healing, and Learning to See Through Love How do we heal the quiet, persistent voice inside that tells us we aren't enough? In this deeply personal and moving story written and narrated by host Jackie Vandertuin, we step into a sacred journey through the "corridor of a life." Passing into a luminous realm after death, a soul is invited to walk through a gallery of their own memories: from the breathtaking wonder of creation and early childhood trauma to the lingering weight of self-doubt, shame, and harsh self-judgment. When met by their Creator at the end of the hall, they are given a single, life-altering invitation: "Walk it again... but this time, see it through the eyes of love." In this short story, we explore: The Lenses We Wear: How internal self-loathing can distort our memories and make a beautiful life look broken. Healing the Inner Critic: Confronting the voices that told us we were "unlovable," "imperfect," or "not enough." Self-Love as Sacred Practice: Discovering why offering compassion to yourself is not an act of arrogance, but an act of deep reverence and gratitude for the miracle of your existence. Whether you are navigating physical insecurities, past trauma, or the quiet fear that you aren't living up to your potential, this episode is a tender reminder to look at your story with softer eyes. "To love yourself was not arrogance. It was gratitude. It was honouring the life you were given." Love isn't just something we receive, it's something we demonstrate. In this powerful follow-up to our Self-Love conversation, host Jackie Vandertuin welcomes back Amanda Halls, Cailea Davis, and Stacie da Ponte for an honest and heartfelt discussion about how the relationship we have with ourselves shapes every relationship around us. Inspired by Rupi Kaur's words, "How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you," this episode explores the ways our self-talk, boundaries, standards, and daily choices become a blueprint for how others treat us. Together, we dive into the connection between self-love and healthy boundaries, the courage it takes to stop accepting less than we deserve, and how practices like yoga and mindfulness help us cultivate deeper self-respect. We also explore the yogic principle of non-harming and non-stealing and how honoring ourselves can lead to greater freedom, authenticity, and connection. Whether you're learning to say no, reclaiming your worth, or discovering what self-love looks like beyond inspirational quotes, this conversation offers practical wisdom and personal stories that remind us that self-love is not selfish - it's foundational. Join us as we explore how the love we cultivate within becomes the language others learn to speak in our presence. In this trailer, Amanda Halls, Cailea Davis and Stacie DaPonte continue the discussion on self love modeled around the message written by Rupi Kaur of how we love ourselves invites a modeling of that love to others in how they love us. In this trailer Amanda quotes James Baldwin about wearing masks which has been a theme throughout this season. Asking the question of where the mask comes from and how to remove that mask. What does it truly mean to love yourself? In this heartfelt episode of The Inner Practice , host Jackie Vandertuin is joined by returning guests Cailea Davis, Jasmine Deleon, and Megan Pomeransky for an honest and thoughtful conversation about self-love, self-compassion, and the stories we tell ourselves. Drawing inspiration from the Buddha's teaching, "You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection," this discussion explores the many dimensions of self-love—from navigating mistakes and challenges to recognizing our inherent worth. Together, Jackie, Cailea, Jasmine, and Megan reflect on: • The origins of our inner critic and how it influences our lives • How compassionate thinking can transform our relationship with ourselves • Viewing mistakes as opportunities for growth rather than evidence of failure • The hidden beauty revealed through life's challenges • What it means to truly believe we are deserving of love and affection • The yogic principle of Ahimsa (non-harming) and how it applies to self-compassion • The role yoga plays in cultivating self-love, self-acceptance, and healthy boundaries • How our practice on the mat influences the way we care for ourselves off the mat This episode is a gentle invitation to examine your inner world, soften your self-judgment, and begin cultivating a deeper relationship with yourself, one that is rooted in compassion, acceptance, and authenticity. Join us for a meaningful conversation about learning to come home to ourselves. What is self love? Why is it important and how does it show up for ourselves both on and off the mat? Finally, why is it important that we emulate self love for others. In this trailer, Cailea Davis talks about where the idea for the self love podcast came from. In April of 2026, Cailea Davis approached me and suggested this idea for a podcast. She had been sitting with this concept, particularly as the theme wove itself through all the previous podcasts. This episode builds on part 1 I'm so grateful to previous guests Cailea, Jasmine Deleon and Megan Pomarensky for sharing their thoughts and their personal stories and why self love is important. In Part Two of this powerful conversation on The Inner Practice Podcast , host Jackie Vandertuin speaks with trauma-informed educator and Prison Yoga Project Director of Training, Jen Lindgren , about the realities of incarceration, trauma, and the transformative role of embodied healing practices inside correctional facilities. Drawing from both her personal experience growing up with a father who was incarcerated and her years facilitating trauma-informed yoga in prisons, Jen offers a deeply human perspective on the people behind prison walls and the complex trauma histories many carry. Together, Jackie and Jen explore the intersection of trauma, addiction, poverty, systemic injustice, and incarceration — and how practices like yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness can help restore agency, emotional regulation, and self-awareness in environments often defined by control and punishment. This episode examines: The hidden trauma often underlying incarceration Misconceptions about incarcerated individuals The connection between the nervous system, survival behaviors, and harm Racial and social inequities within the prison system What trauma-informed yoga actually looks like inside correctional facilities How body-based healing practices support rehabilitation and recovery The importance of choice, dignity, and humanity in healing-centered spaces More than 90% of incarcerated individuals will one day return to their communities. This conversation invites us to reconsider what rehabilitation truly means — and what becomes possible when healing is part of the process. This is an episode about resilience, accountability, humanity, and the possibility of transformation. In this powerful episode of The Inner Practice , I sit down with Jen Lindren from the Prison Yoga Project to explore the profound human need for connection, healing, and belonging. Jen shares a moving story from a yoga session inside a correctional facility. After class, one participant found the courage to share a deeply personal experience. What happened next was simple yet transformative—another incarcerated individual responded with understanding and validation. In that moment, barriers fell away, and two people connected through a shared human experience. This episode invites us to look beyond labels, judgments, and past mistakes. It reminds us that beneath our different life stories, we all carry struggles, wounds, hopes, and a desire to heal. Regardless of where we come from or what we have done, our humanity connects us far more than it separates us. Join us for a conversation about compassion, vulnerability, and the healing power of being truly seen and heard. Listen in and discover how connection can emerge in the most unexpected places—and how healing often begins when someone simply says, “I understand.” If you want to know more about the Prison Yoga Project, check out https://www.prisonyoga.org/ Jen can be reached on IG @yellowbikesandyoga Send us Fan Mail Support the show If you enjoyed this show, make sure you like, subscribe, follow and download the episode or simply leave a comment. Sometimes the work we’re called to do grows quietly from our own stories—through loss, unanswered questions, and a deep desire to create something different. In this episode, I sit down with Jen Lindgren, trauma-informed educator, movement facilitator, and Director of Training with the Prison Yoga Project. Jen’s work supports incarcerated individuals and communities navigating adversity—but her connection to this space is deeply personal. As a child in the 1990s, Jen visited her father during his incarceration. Years later, she returned to that same environment as a yoga teacher, holding space for others walking similar paths. In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, we explore: The impact of complex trauma and how it shapes identity Movement, yoga, and breath as pathways to healing What it means to return to places of pain with purpose Forgiveness, self-compassion, and the human stories behind prison walls How service to others can become a powerful part of our own healing This is a conversation about seeing beyond labels and reconnecting with the heart of what it means to be human. This podcast episode contains dialogue related to sexual abuse, please take care when listening. What if your healing journey began in the most unexpected place: on a pool table in an after-hours bar? In this deeply moving episode of The Inner Practice , Jackie sits down with Jen Lindgren, Director of Training with the Prison Yoga Project, yoga facilitator, and teacher to explore a story rooted in pain, resilience, and profound transformation. Jen shares what it was like growing up with a father who was incarcerated, navigating the weight of stigma, and struggling with her own trauma. Through raw honesty, she speaks about the struggles of self-harm, the search for belonging, and how movement first became a doorway back to her body. Then, in an unexpected moment, yoga found her, changing the trajectory of her life. This conversation traces Jen’s path from early adversity to becoming a leader in trauma-informed yoga within prison systems. It’s a powerful reflection on grace, the complexity of human behavior, and the deep truth that beneath every label is a person longing to be seen, understood, and healed. In Part 1 of this two-part series, Jen shares her personal story of how yoga entered her life and set her on the path toward the meaningful work she does today, bringing healing practices to communities often forgotten and underserved. This episode is for anyone who has ever felt lost, judged, or disconnected, and is searching for a way back to themselves. Cassie Doucette didn’t just find yoga—she felt it. From her very first class, something shifted. The connection between breath and movement offered a new way of being—one that traditional addictions counselling hadn’t fully provided. Over the past 11 years as co-owner of The Loft Yoga Studio, Cassie has cultivated more than a yoga space—she’s built a sanctuary for authenticity in a community where emotions are often left unspoken. In this episode, Cassie shares how yoga helped her move through anxiety, reshape her relationships, and create a space where people can safely explore their inner world. We talk about the unique challenges of small-town culture, the weight of generational trauma, and how embodiment practices can break cycles of harm. From women’s circles to somatic awareness, from supporting veterans to raising emotionally aware children, Cassie’s work is rooted in one powerful belief: healing begins when we are allowed to feel. This is a conversation about courage, community, and the quiet revolution of being yourself. Healing rarely fits inside a ten-minute appointment or a prescription pad. In this episode of The Inner Practice , we sit down with Dr. Jill Bailey , a physician whose career has evolved from the front lines of small-town family medicine to the deeply emotional terrain of mental health, addiction medicine, and mindfulness. After fourteen years of walking alongside patients through their most ordinary and extraordinary days, Jill felt called to look beneath the illness to the humanity of the person. Today, she shares her journey as a general practitioner, psychotherapist, researcher, and educator who is helping shape the next generation of doctors at the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine. In this conversation, we explore: The Power of Continuity: What fourteen years of family medicine taught Jill about connection, belonging, and the quiet moments that matter most. The Shift to Mental Health: Why she transitioned into addiction medicine and how she stays grounded when outcomes are uncertain and non-linear. Mindfulness in Medicine: A look at Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), how these practices changed her internal experience of being a doctor. Advocacy & Research: Her vital work studying Intimate Partner Violence among physicians and the importance of bringing compassion to the healers themselves. A New Vision for Women’s Health: Jill’s upcoming multidisciplinary clinic in Orangeville, designed to be an "unhurried," evidence-based, and welcoming space. Whether you are a healthcare professional navigating burnout or someone seeking a more compassionate approach to your own well-being, Jill’s insights remind us that the "inner practice" is the ground beneath the lives we build. Healing is not always loud. Sometimes it is a quiet presence in a room, a pause before speaking, and a willingness to stay when things feel uncertain. In this episode of The Inner Practice , host Jackie Vandertuin sits down with Dr. Amy Wheeler—yoga therapist, educator, former varsity athlete, and sports psychologist—to explore what it truly means to live the practices we teach. Amy’s path began in high-performance sport at the University of Northern Iowa, where she developed a deep understanding of discipline, resilience, and the intelligence of the body. Her journey evolved into sports psychology, working with elite athletes, and later into yoga therapy and integrative healthcare education. In 2022, her life shifted profoundly with a diagnosis of cancer of the tongue. What followed was not only a personal healing journey, but a deepening of her work in nervous system regulation, emotional intelligence, and whole-person care. Together, Jackie and Amy explore: The intersection of sport psychology and yoga and integrative medicine What it means to regulate the nervous system during illness How yoga therapy supports healing in both clinical and personal contexts The evolving role of integrative health in modern healthcare systems Finding resilience, meaning, and presence in the face of uncertainty Dr. Wheeler is the Chair of the Department of Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda at Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she trains future practitioners to bring more humanity into healthcare. She is also the CEO of Optimal State of Living and the host of The Yoga Therapy Hour , now in its 10th season. In this deeply moving trailer of The Inner Practice , Dr. Amy Wheeler shares an intimate reflection on the moments before undergoing surgery for tongue cancer—and how yoga transformed what could have been a state of fear into one of calm, trust, and inner steadiness. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by anxiety, Amy describes how she turned inward, grounding herself in a felt sense of being loved. Drawing on her background in yoga therapy and nervous system regulation, she recognized what happens in the body when we move toward fear and consciously chose a different path. This conversation explores how she accessed a sattvic state, a place of clarity, balance, and well-being, even in the face of uncertainty. It’s a powerful example of what it means to live the practice, not just teach it. Amy’s story is not about bypassing fear, it’s about understanding it, meeting it, and choosing a different internal experience. This episode is for anyone navigating illness, uncertainty, or moments that ask us to go deeper into ourselves.
