Welcome to Marrying Your Passions: The DINK Travel and Adventure Podcast! We're Nathan and Alicia, a childfree couple proving you don't have to wait for "someday" to live your best life. Join us as we share travel adventures, marathon stories, foodie discoveries, and honest advice for DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids), empty nesters, and anyone prioritizing adventure NOW. We've explored 47 states, camped across 11,775 miles in our teardrop trailer, visited National Parks from coast to coast, traveled internationally to places like England and Kenya, and Nathan's run marathons in 40 states (and counting). From hunting down the best deep-dish pizza in Chicago to testing moonshine across multiple states to SCUBA diving in the Caribbean, we've learned that the freedom to travel - and eat well - comes from making it a priority, not waiting for the perfect time. Whether we're reviewing adults-only cruises, sharing destination marathon experiences, discovering hidden gem restaurants, exploring breweries and distilleries, or explaining how we turned Alicia's work conferences into cross-country road trips, we're here to inspire you to make adventure part of your everyday life. Plus, you'll meet Peppermint Patty, our dog who predicts college football games (she's 13-3 this season, just saying). We believe life gets richer when you marry your passions with meaningful connections and the freedom to pursue them. Whether you're DINKs like us, empty nesters with newfound freedom, or couples figuring out how to travel more - this podcast is for you. New episodes every other week. Let's make it happen!

In 2021, Nathan ran a 3:02 at REVEL Big Bear to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Under Boston’s new rules, that same race would count as a 3:12. In the final part of our REVEL Big Bear series, we share our hot takes on the Boston Marathon’s new qualifying standard s and the downhill adjustment that is reshaping races like Big Bear. In this episode: how the BAA tightened Boston Marathon qualifying times by five minutes, the new downhill penalty tiers (five minutes added for 1,500 to 2,999 feet of drop, ten minutes for 3,000 to 5,999 feet, and no qualifying at all at 6,000 feet or more), and why we think singling out downhill races misses the bigger picture. Plus, Alicia’s case for counting heat, hills, rain, and Disney churro stops, Nathan’s Denver 5K “advantage,” why Boston is a celebration and not a race to requalify, what London’s two day marathon in 2027 could mean for the World Marathon Majors, and what REVEL’s move to Vacation Races means for the runners who love these races. We wrap up with our takeaway: keep chipping away at your goal, even when someone moves the finish line. New to the series? Also check out Episode 29, our REVEL Big Bear story, and Episode 30, our conversation with REVEL’s Coach Paul Carmona. Running the final REVEL Big Bear on November 7? He was a lawyer who hadn’t run in years. Then a 5K race bag held a card for a half marathon, then the half marathon race bag held a card for a marathon, and Coach Paul Carmona kept asking the same question: how hard could it be? More than 80 marathons, 15 Boston Marathons , and thousands of coached runners later, the longtime coach behind the REVEL Race Series training programs joins us ahead of the final REVEL Big Bear Marathon and Half on November 7, 2026. In this episode: Paul’s unplanned path from college rower to marathoner to downhill racing coach, how he became REVEL’s coach, his memory of running through the clouds at Big Bear, and his REVEL Big Bear course strategy for both the marathon and the half (fast, faster, fastest in reverse). Plus, why downhill racing is so hard on your quads, how to do downhill marathon training even if you live somewhere flat, why you should always run the tangents, what the Boston Marathon qualifying times and new downhill adjustment mean for Big Bear runners, why Paul treats Boston as dessert, and the very good reason he’s missing this year’s race. Running Big Bear this year? Catch Paul’s course strategy livestream on Wednesday, October 28, on the REVEL Race Series Facebook page , and don’t miss Coach Kristen Smith’s course talk at the expo. Some races change your life. For Nathan, REVEL Big Bear in Southern California was marathon number 30 and the day he finally qualified for the Boston Marathon . That same morning, Alicia ran her very first half marathon down the same mountain. With Big Bear running under the REVEL name for the last time on November 7, 2026, before the series joins Vacation Races , Nathan and Alicia share a love letter to REVEL and the race weekend that remains one of the highlights of their lives. In this episode: how we discovered REVEL at a race expo, why downhill racing is harder than it looks (just ask our quads), the Golden Driller Marathon that sparked the BQ chase, a year of downhill marathon training with 2,160 miles and a daily run streak, training side by side for Alicia's first half, scouting the finish line in Redlands, why a partner hotel matters on a point to point course, Coach Paul Carmona's REVEL Big Bear course strategy talk at the expo, a party bus up the mountain, the speed bump that nearly ended Alicia's race, the song that showed up at mile 15, and a finish line secret Nathan hears for the first time on mic. Plus, a celebration dinner at Goofy's Kitchen at Disneyland , a preview of our full conversation with Coach Paul in Episode 30, and a little foreshadowing of our thoughts on Boston Marathon qualifying times and the new downhill rules. We're heading south of the border this episode to talk with Melanie Marsell and Kathleen Hall, co-founders of Explore the Americas and Dive the Americas . They run a boutique custom travel design company covering Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. With over 20 years of combined experience and more than 3,000 trips planned, Melanie and Kathleen aren't remote agents working off a guidebook. Melanie is a Costa Rica native, and Kathleen has called Costa Rica home since 2015. They know which roads wash out, which guides to trust, and how to build a trip that actually lets you slow down and take a place in. In this episode, we dive into: The Meet Cute : How a Costa Rica native and a marine biology grad crossed paths in the jungle and built a business together. Monkey Business : The hilarious reality of what happens when your hotel room gets ransacked by monkeys. Intentional Travel : What responsible, custom travel actually looks like in practice, not just in theory. Debunking Myths : Why the biggest misconceptions about safety and accessibility in Latin America are years out of date. The Real Cost : What it actually costs to work with a custom travel company versus booking it yourself. Future DINK Trips : A sneak peek at the early conversations around a future DINK group trip we're exploring together. If you've ever wondered whether Latin America and the Caribbean are more accessible, more welcoming, and more livable than you think, this conversation will change your mind. Before marriage, before the 50 state marathon quest, before any of it, there was Montreal. Nathan and Alicia head back to their first trip together as a couple, back in August 2006, a solo planned adventure that turned into a lifelong partnership in adventure. They also revisit their 2023 day trip up from Burlington, Vermont, and reflect on just how much that first trip foreshadowed who they'd become. In this episode: Old Montreal 's cobblestone streets, Mont Royal Park’s overlook (then and now), Notre Dame Basilica , Olympic Stadium , a duck boat tour with a very memorable smell, the Underground City , and the Montreal Eye . Plus, border crossing then versus now, a future trip wish list (Cirque du Soleil, the great Montreal bagel rivalry, and Nathan's plan to run every Canadian province after finishing all 50 states), and a can't miss episode extra: BG26.2 marathon weekend details and a listener discount code. Join us as we kick off fall marathon season with a Labor Day weekend twofer: the Tupelo Marathon in Mississippi and the Heart of America Marathon in Columbia, Missouri. These two races hold a special place in Nathan's 50 state marathon journey, Tupelo was marathon number 3, Heart of America was number 9, and both remain some of our earliest adventures together as a married couple. We'll take you through what to expect on race day, from Tupelo's early 5 AM start and rolling country roads through Lee and Pontotoc counties, to Heart of America's five and a half miles of gravel road, the climb up Easley Hill, and its title as the second oldest continuously running marathon in the country. Plus, Nathan's hobble through the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum right after finishing Tupelo, a dough burger at Elvis's childhood diner , and the year we watched a runner attempt a record in a full suit at Heart of America. We also sit down with Heart of America race director Graham Bartlett for the inside scoop on this year's race. We also are excited to announce our 44th state and marathon: BG26.2 in Bowling Green, Kentucky this November, including a partnership discount code just for our listeners. We know timeshares are a hot button topic. There are two camps out there, the owners who've had one for decades and won't hear a word against it, and everyone else convinced it's a scam. We fall firmly into the first camp, and in this episode we're opening up the books on all three of our timeshares to show you exactly why. Married DINK (dual income, no kids) couple, Nathan and Alicia break down their ownership at Westgate Resorts , Hyatt Vacation Club (purchased originally as Welk Resorts before Hyatt's 2022 acquisition), and Disney Vacation Club , covering real numbers, real maintenance fees, and the honest sales pitch experience at each. They share the story of buying their first Westgate timeshare on a whim in Gatlinburg back in 2014, almost selling it during COVID, and how that decision accidentally led them to fall in love with Branson, Missouri. They walk through how points, weeks, and exchanges like Interval International actually work, break down what a real week costs them in maintenance fees versus retail rates, and get honest about the parts of timeshare ownership nobody likes to talk about, aggressive sales pitches, owner update meetings, and rising fees. Most importantly, they answer the question at the heart of the episode: which of their three timeshares would they buy again without hesitation, and which one would they actually sell? As always, we end with a life takeaway: if you use it, it's more than worth it. If you don't, it's a waste, and honestly, that's true of almost anything you'll ever buy. Resorts/Timeshares mentioned: Westgate Branson Lakes Resort - Hollister, MO Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort and Water Park - Gatlinburg, TN Westgate Flamingo Bay Resort - Las Vegas, NV Westgate Park City Resort and Spa - Park City, UT Hyatt Vacation Club at the Ranahan - Breckenridge, CO Villas of Cave Creek - Cave Creek, AZ Four Seasons Residence Club San Diego, Aviara - Carlsbad, CA Disney's Riviera Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Disney's Old Key West Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa - Lake Buena Vista, FL The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort - Lake Buena Vista, FL Other Helpful Links: Westgate Resorts Hyatt Vacation Club Disney Vacation Club Interval International Missed the story of how we got into Westgate in the first place? San Miguel de Allende is a four hundred and eighty five year old colonial city in central Mexico, and it's been named the number one small city in the world six separate times by Condé Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure . In this episode we talk with Greg Gunter, an architect, MBA, and founder of the first Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices franchise in Mexico , about why San Miguel de Allende has become one of the most compelling second home and retirement destinations for DINKs and expats from the United States. Greg has lived in San Miguel de Allende full time since 2009 and sells around twenty five homes a year there, and he walks us through everything someone would need to know before considering a move. We cover the city's UNESCO World Heritage designation and colonial architecture, the residency visa program that makes staying long term easier than in almost any other country, and why homes in San Miguel de Allende are owned fee simple with a deed instead of through the bank trust structure used on Mexico's coast. We also talk through the cost of living, the year round climate at 6,400 feet, the city's seventy five annual festivals, and the safety and language misconceptions that stop a lot of Americans from even considering a home outside the United States. Whether you're a DINK couple thinking about a second home abroad, planning your first trip to San Miguel de Allende, or just curious what expat life in central Mexico actually looks like, this episode covers the history, the lifestyle, and the practical steps to get started. What if the destination where you honeymooned became the place you keep returning to for nearly two decades because it keeps getting better every time? Married DINK couple Nathan and Alicia have been going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee since their honeymoon in 2007, and in this episode they share everything they have learned about one of the most popular travel destinations in the country. From heart-shaped jacuzzis at Honeymoon Hills to the best Thai food in the Smokies, from watching Westgate Smoky Mountains nearly burn to the ground in the devastating 2016 wildfire to watching it rebuild and thrive, this is the episode that has been 19 years in the making. They cover the full corridor (Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg) including the exploding moonshine, wine, and whiskey tasting scene, the best restaurants for vegetarians and everyone else, the Arts and Crafts Community Loop that most tourists miss, the only dog-friendly trail on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park , and how a timeshare inside a national park became their home base. Plus: the story of what happens when a 23-year-old on his honeymoon asks a small-town Tennessee waitress for "adult entertainment." It went exactly as you would expect. What if one of the best destinations for DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids) in the country was a place that probably never crossed your mind? Join us as we explore Hot Springs National Park and Hot Springs, Arkansas , a city and a national park so intertwined you genuinely cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. We hiked through the Ouachita Mountains in the morning, soaked in a private thermal bath in the afternoon, drank beer brewed from the same spring water that has flowed beneath the city for centuries, and walked a historic street with over 100 years of stories. We also brought our dog, Peppermint Patty, on her very first national park hike, nearly skipped the visitor center and almost immediately regretted it, and came away convinced that Hot Springs belongs near the top of every DINK travel list. Nathan and Alicia, your married DINK couple hosts, share where we stayed, our favorite eats and drinks, the thermal bath experience at Quapaw Baths and Spa , the Beer Bath Taster flight at the only brewery in the world inside a national park, the history of Bathhouse Row and Motel Row, and why the Fordyce Bathhouse visitor center and museum is the one stop you absolutely cannot skip even if you are short on time. As always, we end with takeaways on making adventure part of your everyday life such as a "short visit is always better than no visit!" and "Go do the thing!" Most performance nutrition products are packed with synthetic ingredients you cannot pronounce. Zac Curhan built TRUWILD to change that, starting with $10,000 and a bad experience on a hiking trail. In this episode he joins married DINK couple (dual income, no kids) Nathan and Alicia to talk clean nutrition for adventure travel, what entrepreneurship really costs, and why you should stop only doing things you know you will finish. We also get into what entrepreneurship does to your relationships and why TRUWILD products are just as much for the person walking their dog in the Florida heat as they are for the athlete crossing a marathon finish line. We have been using TRUWILD products in training, on race day, and on the road, and we are thrilled to finally introduce you to the person behind the brand. Married DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couple, Nathan and Alicia have made adventure a non-negotiable part of their everyday life. In Episode 20, they take you back to May 2022 and one of the most unforgettable trips of their 50-state marathon journey as Nathan seeks to run a marathon in every state. It started as a straightforward plan: drive from Denver to Keystone, South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore, then head east to Brookings, South Dakota for the Brookings Marathon . Mount Rushmore delivered everything they hoped for and more. What happened on the drive to Brookings did not. What followed was one of the most terrifying experiences of their lives, a storm that stopped traffic on the highway, turned the sky pitch black in the middle of the afternoon, and changed everything about how this trip was going to go. The marathon was gone. The town had no power. They pivoted to Minnesota , got that state crossed off, and still needed South Dakota. A few weeks later, the day after Alicia ran the Revel Rockies Half Marathon in Morrison, Colorado, they drove back to South Dakota for the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon. And Deadwood had a few surprises of its own. They had the chance to sit down with the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon race director, Emily specifically for this episode. Emily has been the race director since 2010. She shares the race's history, its place in the Deadwood community, and everything she has built around race weekend this year. If you have ever thought about running a destination marathon, this conversation will move the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon to the top of your list. What does it take to actually go to the Olympics? Not watch it from your couch, but pack your bags, book your tickets two years in advance, and show up on a mountain in northern Italy with your family ready to experience one of the greatest spectacles on earth? This episode married DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couple Nathan and Alicia sit down with their good friend Bryan Richards, who writes under the pen name Bryan Michael, to find out. Bryan is a Charlotte-based crime thriller author and a guy who has made a habit of traveling specifically for big events, from the Daytona 500 to the ACC Championship to the Mille Miglia in Italy. This past February he took his wife Shannan and their son to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics , and he came back with stories, hard-won logistics advice, and a perspective on the Games that goes way beyond the sports. We talk about how to navigate the lottery system, why you need to book your accommodations the moment they become available, what it costs, what to pack, and why the zones matter more than you think. We also talk about what it feels like to stand in a crowd of people from a dozen different countries all cheering for the same athlete coming down a mountain, and why that matters right now. Plus Bryan talks about completing his first book, Blood Debt , breaks news on his upcoming thriller Past Due , the second book in the Miller Family series, talks about what it really looks like to go all in on a creative dream, and shares what he has learned about building an audience from scratch. If you are thinking about the LA 2028 Olympics or any future Olympics, this episode is your head start. In this episode: How Bryan planned a two-year Olympic trip on a real budget Navigating the lottery, zones, and ticketing system What he would do differently on accommodations The moment that made it all worth it Going all in on a creative passion and what the grind actually looks like What is coming next for the Miller Family thriller series RESOURCES: GUEST: Bryan Michael, Author of Blood Debt available on on Amazon and Past Due (coming April 2026) Website: bryanmichaelauthor.com Socials: @bryanmichaelauthor on Instagram and Facebook Autographed copies and book club discounts available on his website OLYMPICS: Milano Cortina 2026 Official Site LA 2028 Olympics Official Site ATTRACTIONS: The Duomo - Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore Milan Ferrari Museum Maranello Lavino Olympic Venues OUR LINKS: Our Website: marryingyourpassions.com Our Blog: marryingyourpassions.blogspot.com Follow us: @marryingyourpassions on Instagram and Facebook Check out Alicia's Reviews on Google Maps Check out Nathan's Reviews on TripAdvisor Marrying Your Passions is hosted by Nathan and Alicia Adams, a married DINK couple (Dual Income, No Kids) who travel, run marathons, scuba dive, and eat their way through life together.
