This week we look at one of the starriest weeks for the 2006 charts. Beyoncé is putting everything we own in a box to the left (and starting a mini-feud with Ne-Yo in the process), Girls Aloud are releasing the song that turns them into genuine pop music icons, and we get the chart debut of one of the brightest (and most tragic stars) of the 2000s as Amy Winehouse releases Rehab. This story from the UK top 40 singles chart we’re looking at this week all seem united by one thing...how it sucks to be a famous pop star. When you’re not suing your record company (Badly Drawn Boy), you’re having people hack your phones (The Ordinary Boys), or you’re going into cocaine psychosis (Rick James) or you’re having to fire band members to STOP yourself going into cocaine psychosis (Placebo). Not great for these artists, but gives us lots of great 2000s pop music history (and great 2000s pop music in general) to talk about!Featuring the following tracks:Badly Drawn Boy - Nothing’s Gonna Change Your Mind Beatfreakz - Superfreak Bedouin Soundclash - When the Night Feels My Song Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z - Deja Vu Bob Sinclar & Cutee B - Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) Cascada - Everytime We Touch Cast of High School Musical - Breaking Free Cassie - Me & U Chamillionaire feat. It’s always fun when the British record buying public get behind a totally rubbish song, and 2006 gave us a classic example as the UK tried to get David Hasselhoff’s ‘Jump in My Car’ to the top spot. It has some fierce competition from some actual pop songs, legendary emo tracks and whatever P. Diddy’s ‘Come to Me’ is supposed to be. Will ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ be parading its way to the top of the charts, or will Razorlight finally get the chart-topper landfill indie lover were hoping for? Let’s find out as we dive into another classic week of 2000s pop music history from the UK top 40 singles chart. Featuring the following tracks: Bedouin Soundclash - When the Night Feels My Song Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z - Deja Vu Bob Sinclar & Cutee B - Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) Cascada - Everytime We Touch Cast of High School Musical - Breaking Free Cassie - Me & U Chamillionaire feat. “Yeah, but she really is a slag though.” With those immortal words, Jamelia bodied Javine...but while that line is still rightly celebrated, we have forgotten how great Jamelia’s music was in 2006. Luckily, your favourite 2000s pop music history where every episode we’re revisiting the UK top 40 singles chart from this week 20 years ago is here to change that. This week, we’re also talking about Fergie’s ridiculous solo debut (and inability to tell London’s bridges apart), Kelis starting a feud with 50 Cent and the weirdest piece of promo I’ve ever seen a flop pop star do in all my time researching the 00s. Featuring the follow songs from September 2006: Arctic Monkeys - Leave Before the Lights Come On Basement Jaxx - Hush Boy Beyoncé feat. Few pieces of pop music have dented a career quite like Robbie Williams’ Rudebox, so I’m so glad to finally be able to talk about this weird electro-rap song about how TK Maxx costs less and how you don’t sweat much for a fat lass. Once called the worst song ever, is it (whisper it) actually a brilliant piece of 2000s pop? We find out on the latest episode of the music history podcast where every week we relive the singles chart from this week 20 years ago. Elsewhere on the pop music charts this week in 2006: Nelly Furtado’s US number one finally gets its UK release - which Nelly seems intent to destroy the memory of with her weird new version. Plus the Scissor Sisters are back with Elton John in tow and their biggest track yet, I Don’t Feel like Dancin’.Also on this week’s edition of The 2000s Chart Show: * Muse spell out ‘TITS’ in Morse Code * Sandi Thom has a meltdown * We discover the real person that inspired Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis All that plus the following 2006 tracks:Arctic Monkeys - Leave Before the Lights Come On Basement Jaxx - Hush Boy Beyoncé feat. This week on the 2000s pop music history podcast reliving every song from the singles charts of the 00s… “I just want you to know who I am,” bellowed Ronan Keating this week in 2006, as our most anonymous pop star covers The Goo Goo Dolls and derails his career. On the more successful side of things, Beyoncé is back - and it takes a brave pop star to so obviously rip off their own biggest hit and literally call it Deja Vu! Plus, we get the debut of Britain’s Beyoncé, Alesha Dixon.Elsewhere in the world of 2000s pop music, we have Chico trying and failing to have a real career; another X Factor reject trying to launch herself way too late; And the Arctic Monkeys firing their bass player for unclear reasons. This week on the 2000s pop music history podcast counting down the 40 biggest selling songs from this week 20 years ago… “it’s coming home...” by which I mean Three Lions is back on the chart for the (approximately) 28 millionth time. It is just one of the football tracks trying to knock Sandi Thom off the top spot, with Crazy Frog and a nasty piece of xenophobia backed by The Sun battling Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds. For those of you who actually prefer real 2000s pop music, we get Sugababes and The Streets both overwhelming with ballads, Morrissey going mental on his record company, and Duncan from Blue trying and failing to have a solo career. This week’s episode features the following songs: The Automatic - Monster Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - 3 Lions Beatfreakz - Somebody’s Watching Me Busta Rhymes - Touch It Christina Milian feat. Young Jeezy - Say I Crazy Frog - We Are the Champions (Ding a Dang Dong) Depeche Mode - John the Revelator/Lilian Duncan James - Sooner or Later Embrace - World at Your Feet The Feeling - Fill My Little World Gnarls Barkley - Crazy Hope of the States - Sing It Out Infernal - From Paris to Berlin Keane - Is It Any Wonder The Kooks - Naive LL Cool J feat. Jennifer Lopez - Control Myself Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah Mariah Carey feat. Snoop Dogg - Say Somethin’ Michael Jackson - Earth Song Morrissey - The Youngest Was the Most Loved Nelly Furtado - Maneater Nerina Pallot - Everybody’s Gone to War Oakenfold feat. The UK singles charts giveth and they taketh away. So this week 20 years ago, they gave us one of the best song of the 2006, from one of the biggest and best comebacks in pop music history...but they also gave us football-themed rewriting of Tony Christie’s Amarillo. I’d say it’s a game of two halves, but there’s quote enough football talk in this episode already. It’s another ep of The 2000s Chart Show, the pop music history podcast where every episode we count down the 40 biggest selling songs of this week 20 years ago. Featuring the following songs: The Automatic - Monster Beatfreakz - Somebody’s Watching Me Busta Rhymes - Touch It Chicane feat. Tom Jones - Stoned in Love Christina Milian feat.
