Moving Past the Fear of Judgment: Gym Anxiety, Alcohol Boundaries and Backing Yourself In this Fit & Unfiltered episode, I talk about how fear of other people’s judgement can hold us back from going after our goals, even when time and capability aren’t the issue. I share two client examples: one woman feeling anxious about returning to the gym after six weeks away, and another choosing to cut alcohol until December but worrying about social pressure. I relate this to my own self-doubt when showing up online and explain how we often assume others are judging us when they’re usually focused on themselves. Giving you four practical steps: get specific about who you fear is judging you, take decisions out of the moment with pre-planned boundaries, build evidence of your capability by tracking wins, and get around like-minded people who support your growth, including the Thriving Women community. In this episode of the Fit and Unfiltered podcast, I share why 1st September feels like a mini new year as the kids go back to school and routine returns, and I unpack a holiday moment I overheard “You don’t need to drink water, they’re on holiday” as a powerful example of the learned mindset that health doesn’t matter on holidays, weekends or special occasions. I explain how this thinking can fuel all-or-nothing dieting, yo-yo cycles and “midweek versus weekend” habits that many women struggle to break, often rooted in childhood and reinforced later by being put on diets in the teenage years. I encourage you to prioritise health 365 with flexibility, normalise a first-week adjustment period, aim for “good enough” not perfection, reduce processed foods, focus on protein, fruit and veg, fibre and hydration, cut social media overwhelm, get clear on what thriving means to you, and seek coaching/community support if you need accountability. Stop Trying Harder: The Simple September Fat Loss Reset for Women in Their 40s (Boundaries, Protein & Training Smarter) In this episode of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast, I am sharing feeling overwhelmed (possibly perimenopause brain) and explaining why many women still struggle with fat loss in September despite good intentions, because their default mindset is to push harder. Drawing on a new one-to-one client story, I am going through the fact that most women don’t need a new plan, what they need is consistency, identity work, better boundaries, stress management and kinder self-talk. Outlining three common mistakes, I encourage you to embrace maintenance phases to build self-trust, adapting plans through seasons (including December), and invite you to join Thriving Women for a sustainable, flexible approach. In this episode of Fit and Unfiltered, I share my framework of 10 reminders to help you cut through overwhelm and get clear on how to restart or recommit to fitness. Especially if you're a woman over 40. I talk about how you control your daily effort, even though what "100%" looks like changes day to day, and why prioritising self-care alongside training and nutrition matters more than people think. I also get into why high stress can stall your results no matter how clean you're eating, and why your metabolism isn't broken. It's flexible, and it improves with consistent routines. Perimenopause, Summer Holidays & Your Goals: How to Adapt Without Burning Out In this episode I am speaking to women who are navigating summer holidays alongside perimenopause and hormonal shifts. Explaining how fluctuating oestrogen and erratic progesterone can impact mood, cravings, sleep, recovery, stress, anxiety and irritability. Which often trigger self-sabotage through food, alcohol or scrolling. I want to encourage you to stop pushing harder, acknowledge what’s changing, protect your energy, and adapt training and nutrition with simple systems and boundaries. Sharing practical strategies used in my coaching, including adjusting around the menstrual cycle, prioritising showing up over perfect workouts, and focusing on lifestyle beyond the gym. There are four takeaways I delve in to, so that your goals don’t get put on hold. In this episode I am getting completely unfiltered about what I have learned from being a client of multiple coaches over 20 years and how those experiences, good and bad, shaped everything I do inside Thriving Women today. I also share a full debrief from my 10 day holiday in Majorca, including upgrading to all inclusive, and why having the right mindset, standards and approach to moderation meant I came home feeling just as confident and energised as when I left. I talk honestly about the parts of the coaching industry that I think are doing real damage. The impersonal check ins, the unrealistic 1200 to 1300 calorie targets, the programmes that completely ignore postpartum limitations and injuries. And I explain why harsh deficits lead to poor adherence, untracked eating and increased food noise rather than results. My goal with every client is always to eat as much as possible while still making progress. I share why whole food, menu style guidance works better than rigid meal plans, how whole foods naturally reduce cravings and why I will always prioritise consistency, sleep and stress management over obsessing about calories. I also open up about my dad's late onset Type 1 diabetes and how that deepened my focus on real health beyond just aesthetics. If you have ever felt let down by a coach, struggled with food noise or wondered why the plan you are following is not working, this episode is for you. PS. Why Summer Is the Best Time for Women to Build Muscle (Plus My Unfiltered Ibiza Glow-Up) In this weeks episode of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast, I am sharing with you why summer is an opportune time for women to build muscle rather than panic about eating more, because a lean, toned look comes from muscle and you can’t build significant muscle in a calorie deficit. In my unfiltered chat, I revisit my goal of taking more pride in my appearance after Ibiza reminded me of my glam side, and I explain that we can restart goals at any moment. Then I break down five non-negotiables for muscle building. PS. Your Permission Slip to Enjoy Summer: Be Present, Ditch “Being Good” and Live Now In this episode of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast, I share a reminder that there’s a version of you 30 years from now who would give anything to be in your body, your health and this exact stage of life, so the only moment that matters is now. I talk about how many women need a “permission slip” to show up, wear the clothes, be confident and stop waiting for a scale number before enjoying life, especially over the next six weeks of the summer holidays. I explain how the stressful cycle of weekend overindulgence followed by Monday under-eating, caffeine and evening overeating keeps women stuck, and that “being good” isn’t deprivation, it’s normal self-care. Using client stories and my own postpartum identity shifts, I focus on mindset, self-worth, nervous system regulation and living fully now. So take a listen, and let's keep you Thriving throughout Summer. If you found this episode valuable and wanted to hear more from The Nicola Graham Podcast, make sure to like, subscribe and share. PS. How to Adapt Your Fitness Routine for Summer (Without Falling Off the Wagon) | Fit & Unfiltered On this week's episode of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast, I am talking you through the ways that you can adapt your routine for summer when kids are off and social events increase. Looking at how results are driven by habits, not seasons. Key points include dropping FOMO, setting fewer summer non-negotiables (2–3), keeping general movement/steps high, prioritising protein with convenient options, planning nutrition around events and choosing one indulgent occasion, and managing expectations. Staying consistent with strength training (even shorter sessions, focusing on compound lifts) rather than relying on frequent HIIT, and letting go of guilt and self-sabotage by getting back on track after indulgence. So take a listen, and let's keep you Thriving throughout Summer. PS. In this episode, I unpack what it really means to “enjoy the journey” in fitness, especially during summer when it’s easy to become fixated on a goal weight, and I explain that the real transformation is the identity shift you build through consistent habits. I also share reflections from a recent Ibiza trip, including how being more present helped me feel renewed and how I approached alcohol and balance without guilt. Outlining simple, sustainable systems to help you feel better and make progress: daily movement, clear food standards with an 80/20 approach, focusing on consistency rather than obsessing over the scales, and protecting sleep as a non-negotiable for energy and recovery. Ending the episode by encouraging you to stay in your own lane, keep things basic, and join my Thriving Women coaching if you want help implementing these systems. PS. Summer Mindset Shift: Ditch the Diet Mentality & Choose Freedom On this week's episode of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast, I am sharing a summer mindset reframe. Encouraging you ladies to move out of the constant diet/“fell off the wagon” mentality and step into a lifestyle built on freedom, self-trust, and adaptability. Outlining a simple maintenance-calorie estimate (about 14 calories per pound with steps and strength training), promotes an 80/20 whole-foods approach, and showing you how you can embrace your body and enjoy summer without missing out. In this anniversary episode, I am marking one full year of The Fit and Unfiltered Podcast Reflecting on what showing up consistently (through self-doubt, imperfect conditions and fluctuating motivation) has taught me about health, fitness and any long-term goal. I share the “penny drop” moment of being shortlisted for Best Podcast at the British Fitness Awards and thanks listeners who voted, while explaining why the show focuses on honest, unfiltered conversations for women (often 35+). I compare unrealistic online “polished” standards to body and fat-loss comparisons, warning against quick fixes, and emphasising embracing the hard work now to make life easier later. Also highlighting how client interviews resonate most, discusses commitment, sustainable habits, consistency over perfection, hormonal and environmental challenges (including a UK heatwave), and the role of community, coaching, discipline and self-trust in thriving. Especially in your 40s. Overwhelm, Hormones & the Dopamine Trap: Practical Ways to Feel Like You Again (Especially in Your 40s) In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I talk about overwhelm. How it can feel like a revolving door for women and often ramps up around our menstrual cycle, especially in our 40s as hormones shift and serotonin drops. I share a personal example of feeling unexpectedly low after a brilliant weekend (and a terrible night’s sleep), and why being constantly “switched on” via notifications, social media, emails and endless life admin can make everything worse. I explain the difference between observing low mood versus attaching a story to it, and how quick dopamine hits (scrolling, wine, chocolate) can keep us stuck in self-sabotage. Covering practical tools: write a personal morning mantra (even using ChatGPT), close down mental “tabs,” practise letting worries go, set boundaries like no phone in bed, audit what you consume online, and use iPhone/social-blocking tools. Plus a reminder to prioritise walks, goals, presence and self-care when you feel frumpy or overwhelmed. Weekend Progress Without Perfection: Structure, Standards & Presence | The Nicola Graham Podcast On this Thursday episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast I am addressing women who stay on track Monday to Friday but feel their progress slips at weekends, because it’s not just a discipline issue but a mindset-and-ecosystem one. I am sharing a personal story from my husband’s 40th birthday party, inspired by my five-year-old’s “main character” comment, reflecting on confidence, being present, and not needing alcohol. Using a client check-in, I highlight how perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking can erase recognition of real progress (fat loss, better training, less drinking, more family presence). Encouraging you to define what you want weekends to feel like, build lighter weekend structure, set simple standards (like protein-first meals), choose a few habits to protect, identify weak spots, and plan ahead. I also talk about restaurant calorie discrepancies and calorie banking pitfalls, emphasising clarity over autopilot so weekends support both life and goals. Are You Really in a Calorie Deficit? 5 Reasons Fat Loss Stalls (and How to Fix It) In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I’m digging into the most common reason women feel like they’re “doing everything right” but not seeing fat loss: the gap between what you think you’re eating and what you’re actually eating. I explain why spiralling into drastic calorie cuts backfires, and I walk you through a simple audit to check whether your calorie deficit is disappearing through untracked extras (like oils, sauces and kids’ leftovers), inaccurate portion estimates, higher weekend calories, inconsistent activity/steps, or not eating enough protein. I also share why reducing mindless snacking matters, how to use tracking as data (not a pass/fail), and why small, sustainable tweaks beat overhauls. If you’re nailing the basics, it may simply be time and patience, plus staying in your own lane. Extreme Ownership: Stop Negotiating Your Standards In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I talk about taking extreme ownership of your results and getting back in the driver’s seat of your life. Not chasing quick fixes or a number on the scales. Breaking down the five pillars of a real healthy lifestyle (nutrition, fitness, mindset, stress management and sleep) and explain why action-taking is the key that pulls it all together. I challenge the “valid reasons” we latch onto (lack of time, family pressures, socialising, even the temptation of skinny injections) and show how small shifts in self-talk (“I didn’t prioritise it” vs “I didn’t have time”) build self-belief. I also share why setting non-negotiables and a realistic minimum standard matters, especially on tough days, and I invite women ready to stop waiting for perfect conditions to join the Thriving Women community. The Grazing Trap: How to Stop Constant Snacking & Feel More in Control | The Nicola Graham Podcast In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I talk to you about moving away from constant snacking and what I call the “grazing trap.” I share why eating little and often can keep you stuck, including how it can stop you feeling real hunger and fullness, keep insulin elevated and make fat loss harder, and create decision fatigue and food noise that leads to weekend rebounds. Explaining how hunger hormones like ghrelin can rise on a schedule, why learning to tolerate a bit of hunger builds self-trust, and how structured “anchor meals” (built around protein, healthy fats and fibre) can help you feel satisfied for four hours plus. I also share what we’re focusing on inside the Thriving Women Clean Slate Challenge and how a simple framework beats rigid meal plans. Stop Chasing “Summer Body” Deadlines: Thrive Through Summer (Without the Reset) In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I challenge the “summer body/summer ready” narrative and the unnecessary pressure it puts on women, describing it as a money-making industry built on deadlines and all-or-nothing thinking. I share a recent client conversation about staying consistent through summer by tracking data as awareness, not judgement, and making practical adjustments (like steps and a little cardio) while keeping flexibility for social plans. Explaining why confidence isn’t a dress size or a number on the scale, why quick-fix plans often create dependence, and how Thriving Women focuses on building strength, resilience and an aligned lifestyle (including many choosing to reduce alcohol). Also, I encourage you to be courageous, authentic, stop competing with external narratives, and enjoy this summer without being at war with yourself. You’re Not Too Late: How to Start Now and Feel Confident This Summer (June Reset) In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I’m sharing the truth I want every woman to hear: you haven’t missed your chance, June can be your beginning, and you’re not too late to feel confident this summer. I talk about the pressure we’re put under to “sort it all out” by July and why the fitness and diet industry benefits when we feel behind. I also share a personal story about how stressed I felt watching my daughter Isadora swim without armbands, and how stress can show up even in joyful moments. Then I break down what actually moves the needle in June: lifting weights consistently (ideally three 40-minute sessions a week), fuelling myself with higher standards instead of picking at leftovers and snacks, and protecting my sleep to support energy, hunger and recovery. I explain why summer can be the best time to start, why this has to be a lifestyle and identity shift (not a quick fix), and I invite you to join us in Time to Thrive for the June challenge and accountability. Are You Holding Yourself Back? The Hidden Worthiness Block (Women, Fitness & Life) In this episode of The Nicola Graham Podcast, I talk openly about worthiness and how it quietly holds so many women back from asking for help, taking up space, and committing to real change in health, fitness and life. Sharing a personal moment from a live business coaching event where I unexpectedly burst into tears and realised I hadn’t felt worthy enough to fully receive support or use my voice, even though I appeared confident on the outside. Linking this to what I see in clients who feel shocked by kindness in the community, who doubt they deserve coaching, and who put everyone else first while their own health slips down the list. I also explore how yo-yo dieting, overwhelm, and self-blame feed this pattern, and I encourage you to reflect on what you truly want, what’s stopping you, and to start small. Choosing discomfort, speaking up, and reminding yourself you are worthy of the time, energy and effort it takes to thrive.
