Dusty goes solo to explain why he shelved a finished leadership manuscript and started over with Ancient Intelligence, a book built around a realization he had spent more than a year resisting: leaders do not need to become technologists to succeed with AI—they need to become better leaders in an environment where work is being done differently. Sparked by a blunt conversation with his friend Alex, who challenged him to stop giving the topic the “Heisman” and recognize the value already emerging from his work with AI, Dusty argues that the business bookshelf is crowded with books answering “How do I use this?” while leaders are wrestling with much deeper questions about where AI belongs, how to lead it, and how to keep teams focused on outcomes rather than activity. He explains that AI has made competent work dramatically easier to produce, shifting the real value from the first 80% of an output into the final 20%—the judgment, discernment, context, wisdom, and expertise that experienced leaders have spent decades developing. That shift makes human leadership more valuable, not less. Dusty’s central insight is that leading AI requires the same capabilities as leading people: set expectations, provide context, define what great looks like, measure results, review the work, and coach toward improvement. Through a practical exercise of reviewing AI output as though it came from a team member, he challenges leaders to identify and codify the judgment they uniquely contribute. The result is an encouraging reframing of the AI era: good work may have become cheap, but hard-earned human wisdom has become increasingly scarce—and therefore increasingly valuable. Dusty goes solo to make the case that the leaders who thrive in the age of AI will not be the ones chasing every new tool, but the ones who apply timeless leadership principles with greater focus and intention. Prompted by a CEO’s candid fear that she may not be “good enough” in this new era, Dusty introduces the central argument behind his upcoming book, Ancient Intelligence : AI is the fulcrum, leadership is the lever, and leaders are the ones capable of moving the world. He exposes how unfocused AI adoption creates diffusion rather than progress, with organizations investing in licenses, pilots, and experimentation without defining the outcomes those investments are meant to produce. Drawing from his own tendency to chase “purple squirrels” inside AI tools, he explains why leaders need boundaries, charters, and predetermined definitions of success to keep extraordinary technological capability pointed at problems that actually matter. Dusty then identifies three hidden costs of unfocused AI leadership—poor return on invested capital, wasted return on invested time, and the opportunities organizations never discover because their leaders are either distracted by AI or too far removed from it to understand what has become possible. Through a practical three-column audit, he challenges leaders to measure what their AI investments have produced, identify where their time could create greater leadership leverage, and name new opportunities that technology now makes possible. The message is ultimately one of confidence rather than fear: AI has not made decades of leadership experience obsolete; it has made clarity, focus, alignment, judgment, and disciplined execution more urgent than ever. Charlene Li joins Dusty to explore what decades of navigating disruption can teach leaders about the rapidly evolving age of AI. Drawing on her experience at Forrester, founding Altimeter, and advising executives through successive waves of technological change, Charlene argues that leaders should stop chasing every new AI tool and start with the problems they actually need to solve. She explains why AI fluency comes through practice rather than mastery, how leaders can overcome the competing forces of FOMO and FIGO (fear of getting involved), and why vision, strategy, judgment, openness, and human connection become even more important as technology accelerates. The conversation also examines Charlene's own leadership failures and lessons, including a painful layoff at Altimeter, and why honesty, fairness, confidence, curiosity, and the willingness to move forward without perfect information are essential during uncertainty. Ultimately, Charlene challenges leaders to see AI not simply as a tool for efficiency, but as an opportunity to unlock human potential, create possibilities that previously didn't exist, and lead disruptive change with greater courage and intention. Dusty challenges leaders to rethink the way they protect and use their time, arguing that time blocking is only the first step and that the real return comes from defining the outcome before the clock starts. He introduces the concept of outcome blocking—taking 60 seconds at the beginning of a meeting, work session, or calendar block to decide exactly what “done” looks like, how the work connects to what matters most, and who is responsible for making sure the target is actually hit. Drawing on Stephen Covey’s principle of “beginning with the end in mind,” Parkinson’s Law, and his experience working with leaders, Dusty explains why simply allocating more time or tightening your calendar cannot solve a problem that is really about undefined outcomes. He argues that AI has fundamentally changed the equation by removing the traditional ceiling of human capacity, meaning work can now expand far beyond the limits of a person’s available hours—making a clearly defined outcome the constraint leaders need more than ever. Through a practical four-step exercise and examples from leadership teams and a multi-unit operator, he shows how naming the goal, defining what must be true when the time is over, connecting the work to the most important priorities, and closing the loop can transform a calendar block from passive activity into intentional impact. The result is a shift from simply showing up for the time to showing up to create an outcome—and a simple 60-second discipline that compounds into sharper focus, greater productivity, and a higher return on invested time. Stepping into a larger leadership role can expose gaps in confidence, clarity, and execution—even for experienced operators. Rodney Binger shares how intentionally sharpening his leadership capabilities transformed the way he leads more than 80 people across MotorWorks, helping him move from leading in fear to leading with confidence, clarity, and purpose. From establishing rules of engagement and having candid conversations to using OKRs, future-back planning, and consistent follow-up, Rodney discovered that effective leadership becomes more powerful when it is turned into a repeatable operating system. The result has been stronger accountability, greater psychological safety, a team that solves problems without him, new leaders emerging throughout the organization, and significant financial gains. This conversation explores how leaders can codify how they lead, align their teams around a shared direction, and create the compound effect that comes from making better leadership decisions consistently. Marcel Schwantes’ journey into human-centered leadership began with a toxic workplace that pushed his body to its breaking point and ultimately led him to discover the power of servant leadership. In this conversation, Marcel and Dusty explore why caring about people is not a soft alternative to accountability, but the foundation for creating high-performing teams, strong cultures, and sustainable business results. They unpack the difference between management and leadership, the importance of values, authenticity, and self-leadership, and why great leaders must be willing to have hard conversations while still treating people with dignity and care. As AI accelerates the pace of change, Marcel argues that leaders have an even greater responsibility to provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and explain the meaning behind how work is changing. The technology may evolve rapidly, but the fundamentals of leadership remain deeply human: serve others, create clarity, protect your people, and help them do their best work. Shane Foye joins Dusty for a thoughtful conversation about the kind of leadership that can't be rushed. As the second-generation president of DW1, Shane shares how leading a growing family business has taught him that the best decisions rarely come from urgency—they come from creating space to think deeply, wrestle with difficult questions, and balance data with intuition. Drawing on lessons from rebranding the company, building an art collection alongside his father, and cultivating a culture rooted in vulnerability and trust, Shane explains why leaders must embrace discomfort, encourage thoughtful failure, and communicate with greater clarity. Throughout the conversation, he reveals how art, architecture, and relationships have shaped his approach to leadership, why security and comfort are not the same thing, and how intentional thinking creates stronger teams, better decisions, and organizations built to last. It's a masterclass on slowing down in order to lead faster, building cultures where people can grow through failure, and remembering that behind every great business decision is a deeply human one. Dusty sits down with Dave Garrison, former multinational CEO, board director, and author of The Buy-In Advantage , to explore why most organizations are leaving enormous human potential untapped. Dave explains the critical distinction between employee engagement and true buy-in, arguing that buy-in is the discretionary energy, creativity, and ownership people willingly bring to a shared mission—the same kind of commitment seen on a Friday night football field, but too often missing on Monday morning at work. Drawing from decades of leading businesses across four continents, he reveals that people are not primarily motivated by compensation, perks, or even job satisfaction; they want to be seen as human beings, have their voices genuinely heard, and understand how their work connects to a meaningful purpose. The conversation dives deep into the leadership behaviors that either create or destroy buy-in, including the transformative power of asking better questions, shifting from giving answers to facilitating thinking, and redefining control as setting clear criteria rather than dictating solutions. Dusty and Dave also explore the intersection of leadership and artificial intelligence, arguing that the same skills required to unlock human potential—clarity of purpose, thoughtful criteria, curiosity, and collaborative problem-solving—are the exact skills leaders must develop to harness AI effectively. Through practical examples, personal stories, and powerful reframes, Dave challenges leaders to stop managing compliance and start cultivating environments where people feel ownership, contribute their best thinking, and become emotionally invested in the success of the organization. Dusty sits down with Kurt Luidhardt, entrepreneur, political strategist, and co-founder of a firm that has helped elect more than 100 members of Congress, 15 senators, 14 governors, and a president. Kurt shares the leadership lessons he has learned from building a business around solving urgent client problems, emphasizing that successful companies are built by identifying existential needs rather than simply creating interesting ideas. He discusses the importance of resilience, calm leadership in chaotic moments, and how his father modeled the power of being a steady presence. Kurt also explores the value of intentional thinking time, prayer, seeking wise counsel, and creating systems that protect leaders from their own blind spots. The conversation dives into experimentation, refining offers through customer feedback, and the importance of understanding what truly creates value for clients. Kurt and Dusty unpack the growing importance of relationship capital in an AI-driven world, arguing that trust, connections, and the ability to create meaningful introductions are becoming some of the most valuable assets a leader can develop. Through stories about entrepreneurship, faith, networking, and personal growth, Kurt challenges leaders to slow down, invest in relationships, and focus on creating lasting impact rather than simply checking boxes. Dusty sits down with Bryan Wish for a thoughtful conversation about personal branding, authentic leadership, and why every professional—not just entrepreneurs or executives—needs to intentionally shape how they show up in the world. Bryan challenges the misconception that personal branding is an exercise in self-promotion, arguing instead that it's the process of distilling your expertise, experiences, and values into a clear, authentic identity that helps others understand why they should trust and choose you. Together, he and Dusty explore how AI is rapidly changing the professional landscape, why commoditization makes differentiation more important than ever, and how leaders can leverage technology without sacrificing authenticity. Bryan explains why the future belongs to those who combine deep self-awareness with consistent expression, shares how scalable technology is making personal branding accessible beyond elite executives, and emphasizes that the goal isn't simply creating more content—it's creating content that genuinely reflects who you are. Throughout the conversation, they unpack the connection between identity, credibility, and influence, ultimately challenging leaders to stop viewing personal branding as an ego play and instead embrace it as one of the most important investments they can make in their long-term impact. Dusty sits down with David Stupay, five-time CEO, executive recruiter, and founder of Platinum Search Partners, for a deeply human conversation about the relationships, experiences, and values that shape exceptional leaders. Drawing from an unconventional career that spans leading a homeless shelter, serving communities in East Africa, building organizations that support children with special needs, and helping companies find transformational talent, David argues that every leader is only one relationship away from changing the course of someone’s life—and carries the responsibility to make that influence a positive one. Together, he and Dusty explore the dignity of work, the importance of building authentic community before you need it, why specificity and clarity are essential leadership skills, and how empathy is forged through serving others rather than climbing the corporate ladder. David shares powerful stories about raising a daughter with profound special needs, lessons learned from humanitarian work in Uganda and Tanzania, and the hard-won wisdom that leadership is ultimately measured not by titles or financial success, but by the lives we improve, the people we develop, and the legacy of relationships we leave behind. Dusty sits down with George Bryant for a deeply personal and thought-provoking conversation about identity, faith, leadership, and the lifelong pursuit of becoming who you were created to be. Drawing from a journey that includes military service, addiction, childhood trauma, entrepreneurship, suicidal struggles, and spiritual transformation, George challenges the conventional view of leadership as a set of skills and reframes it as a process of self-discovery, obedience, and personal responsibility. Together, he and Dusty explore the dangers of defining ourselves through external expectations, the importance of building an identity rooted in purpose rather than achievement, and why many leaders unknowingly live inside what George calls a “prison of prior conditioning.” They unpack the wisdom of uncertainty, the role of faith in navigating challenges, and how discomfort, struggle, and adversity often become the greatest catalysts for growth. George also shares powerful insights on presence, attention, autonomy, and the hidden costs of a distracted world, arguing that meaningful leadership begins with the ability to connect with yourself before you can truly connect with others. Throughout the conversation, he offers a compelling reminder that leadership is not about reaching a finish line, but about embracing the journey, trusting the next step, and becoming more aligned with who you are called to be. Dusty goes solo to challenge one of the biggest misconceptions leaders have about AI: that it should be managed like software rather than led like a person. Building on the themes of recent episodes about identifying opportunities and revealing hidden insights, he argues that the disappointing results many leaders experience with AI have less to do with the technology and more to do with the leadership posture they bring into the interaction. Drawing from conversations with experienced executives and his own evolution from “prompting” to effectively managing a team of AI assistants, Dusty introduces the distinction between “software mode” and “people mode.” He explains how the same leadership practices used to develop high-performing employees—setting expectations, defining success, coaching through iterations, creating accountability, and asking thoughtful questions—are precisely the skills required to unlock better outcomes from AI. Through practical examples and a simple shift from issuing commands to asking “What would you propose?” he demonstrates how leaders can move beyond treating AI like a vending machine and start leveraging it as a capable collaborator. The result is a powerful reframing: leaders do not need to learn an entirely new skillset for the age of AI—they need to apply the leadership skills they already possess to a new kind of team member, allowing AI to amplify judgment, capability, and execution rather than simply automate tasks. Dusty goes solo to explore a leadership skill that becomes exponentially more valuable in the age of AI: the ability to reveal insight rather than provide answers. Building on a conversation with a highly respected CEO who described his role as “handing people a blacklight,” he argues that great leaders are not the source of solutions—they are the source of clarity. Through stories from his own leadership journey and examples ranging from coaching executives to uncovering millions of dollars in hidden business opportunities, Dusty challenges the instinct to become the place where answers live. Instead, he introduces a three-part framework: walk in as the light, not the answer; embrace restraint as a leadership discipline; and apply the same perception skills to both people and AI-enabled opportunities. He demonstrates how leaders who consistently ask questions rather than dispense solutions help others build ownership, confidence, and capability, while also uncovering opportunities that were previously invisible. Anchored by the metaphor of the blacklight, Dusty presents a practical “three questions before one answer” exercise that leaders can use immediately to strengthen their teams and rethink how they approach AI. The central message is simple but powerful: the answers are often already on the page—leadership is about helping people see the dots that are already there and empowering them to connect them for themselves. Dusty goes solo to challenge the growing obsession with AI tools and argues that the leaders who will thrive in the next decade are not the ones chasing every new platform, but the ones who remain relentlessly focused on the problems that actually matter. Using Archimedes’ famous lever metaphor as the foundation, he reframes AI as an extraordinary source of leverage rather than a strategy in itself, warning that many organizations are investing heavily in tools before clearly defining the outcomes they want to achieve. Drawing from his own experience with “AI bloat,” he shares how accumulating subscriptions and capabilities created complexity instead of value until he realized that the order of operations was backwards: define the problem, clarify what success looks like, then select the appropriate tool. Dusty introduces a practical framework he calls “Lever Discipline”—name the nail, pick the lever, keep your hand on it—which helps leaders focus on solving meaningful business challenges instead of getting distracted by shiny technology. Through research, personal reflection, and a simple one-page exercise, he demonstrates why judgment, prioritization, and strategic clarity remain uniquely human responsibilities in an age of increasingly powerful AI. The episode ultimately serves as a reminder that leadership is not becoming less important because of AI; it is becoming more essential, as the leaders who create the greatest impact will be those who use technology as leverage in service of a clearly defined vision rather than allowing the tools themselves to dictate the agenda. Dusty sits down with Jessi Beyer for a deeply human and highly tactical conversation about suicide prevention, emotional awareness, and the leadership responsibility to truly see the people around you. Drawing from her experience as a crisis mental health professional and SWAT negotiator, Jessi reframes a staggering reality—roughly 4% of people are actively considering suicide at any given time—and challenges leaders to move beyond passive awareness into intentional action. Rather than positioning this as clinical or specialized work, she breaks down how the same communication skills used to save lives in crisis situations—like reflective statements, mirroring, and strategic silence—are the exact skills that strengthen trust, connection, and performance across the other 96% of any team. Together, she and Dusty unpack the warning signs leaders often miss, the concept of “leakage” as an early signal for distress, and why most people fail not from lack of care, but from not knowing what to say or how to show up. Through clear frameworks and real-world examples, Jessi demystifies active listening and redefines it as a practical, learnable skill set—one that not only prepares leaders for moments of crisis, but fundamentally changes how they lead, communicate, and connect every single day. Dusty goes solo for the one-year anniversary to tackle one of the biggest misconceptions leaders are facing in the age of AI—that better tools automatically create better organizations. Drawing from conversations with CEOs, research from McKinsey and BCG, and years of leadership coaching, he argues that AI doesn’t replace the fundamentals of leadership; it ruthlessly amplifies whatever leadership chain already exists underneath it. Dusty breaks down how unclear priorities, weak alignment, and poor execution become exponentially more dangerous when multiplied by AI systems that can generate massive amounts of polished but directionless output at machine speed. He revisits his “clarity → alignment → execution” framework, showing how most execution problems are actually upstream leadership failures that AI simply exposes faster, while organizations with strong leadership foundations are seeing extraordinary acceleration instead of chaos. Through practical examples, institutional research, and a 20-minute diagnostic exercise, he challenges leaders to stop treating AI as the strategy itself and instead focus on strengthening the operating system beneath the tools—clarifying what matters most, aligning teams around shared outcomes, and fixing the real bottlenecks before automation multiplies them. The episode ultimately reframes the AI era not as a replacement for leadership, but as the moment that makes disciplined, intentional leadership more urgent and more valuable than ever before. Dusty sits down with Alex Goldfayn for a practical and mindset-shifting conversation about proactive growth, everyday discipline, and why most leaders dramatically underutilize the opportunities already sitting inside their existing relationships. Drawing from his work helping companies generate millions in organic revenue, Alex challenges the default reactive posture that dominates sales and leadership, arguing that consistent, simple actions—like making one more call, sending one more message, or asking one more question—compound into extraordinary results over time. Together, he and Dusty unpack the fear and hesitation that keep leaders from reaching out, the myths around rejection, and the power of replacing overthinking with repetition. Alex shares how “revenue growth activities” (RGAs) create momentum, build confidence, and strengthen trust with customers, while also reinforcing that authenticity and frequency—not perfection—are what drive long-term success. Through clear frameworks and real-world examples, he reframes growth as a controllable process rather than a hopeful outcome, ultimately challenging leaders to stop waiting, start reaching out, and realize that the fastest path to more business—and deeper impact—is already within reach. Dusty challenges one of the most ingrained—and damaging—habits in high-performing leaders: carrying everything themselves. Sparked by a blunt moment with a mentor who reframed not asking for help as “stealing opportunities” from others, he exposes three hidden stories that keep leaders stuck and overwhelmed—the Hero Myth (stepping in equals leadership), Imposter Syndrome (fear of being exposed), and the Help-Requesting Taboo (asking equals weakness). Through personal reflection, real-world examples, and supporting research, Dusty shows how these narratives quietly turn capable leaders into bottlenecks, limiting team growth, eroding trust, and amplifying burnout and isolation. He reframes each story with a more effective lens—leaders don’t create value by doing everything, but by developing others, leveraging uncertainty as a strength, and actively inviting contribution. To make it actionable, he introduces a simple 20-minute audit that helps leaders identify what they’re unnecessarily holding, diagnose the underlying story, and begin delegating with intention. The result is a shift from control to trust, from isolation to shared ownership, and from personal overload to collective capability—reminding leaders that asking for help isn’t taking from their team, it’s giving them the chance to grow and matter. Dusty sits down with Mike Milan, widely known as “Cashflow Mike,” for a high-impact conversation on leadership, communication, and the hidden power of financial clarity in business. From an unconventional start as a Missouri state trooper—where he mastered “verbal judo” and learned to meet people where they are—to building and advising more than 14 companies, Mike shares how his career has been shaped by one core principle: solve the problem people feel , not just the problem you see. He unpacks how most leaders and advisors lose influence by overcomplicating financial data, and instead demonstrates how simplifying income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow into clear, actionable conversations can unlock both trust and performance. Drawing surprising insight from everything from roadside interactions to the psychology observed in the TV show Hoarders , Mike explains his “Elevation Sequence” framework for identifying a client’s true “burning issue” and creating immediate traction. Grounded in authenticity, integrity, and a deep respect for time, he challenges leaders to stop hiding behind reports, stop overwhelming people with information, and instead communicate with clarity that drives action—because at the end of the day, if you don’t understand your cash, you don’t have a business, and if you don’t connect with people, you don’t have influence.
