Tour guides at the Dead Sea still point to a rock they call Lot’s wife. But why did her punishment have to be salt? In Parashat Vayeira, two worldviews stand side by side: Avraham’s open tent, where strangers are fed bread, and Sedom, where kindness is a crime. A striking tradition names Lot’s wife Melach, “salt,” because when the hungry begged her for bread, she handed them salt instead. The Hebrew tells the story: לחם and מלח share the same three letters. One begins with lamed, toward. The other begins with mem, away from. We explore what it means to live a bread life or a salt life, why the Torah never lets salt stand alone on the mizbeach, and how the ancient “covenant of salt” turns a family’s table into an altar. When passengers and crew stopped an attack on Flight 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, a debate broke out almost immediately: was it a miracle, or was it human heroism? This class argues that the Torah answered that question on the sixth day of Creation. We look at heaven and earth created together "like a pot and its lid," the many answers to who God was speaking to when He said נעשה אדם, "Let us make man," and why the plants of Creation waited beneath the ground until Adam prayed for rain. From there we follow the thread to Nachshon at the sea and to Rav Chaim of Volozhin's reading of רוכב שמים בעזרך: God rides the heavens with our help.
