Hiring someone new can feel like you've finally found the person you've been looking for. But sometimes leaders can get caught up in the excitement and start putting a new hire on a pedestal before they've really had a chance to understand them. At the same time the new employee is trying to prove they were worth hiring, bringing plenty of energy, ideas and enthusiasm. Eventually though the honeymoon ends and reality kicks in. In this episode we look at the expectations leaders place on new hires, why we can expect them to fix problems that have existed for years. We also look at it from the new hire's perspective and why learning, listening and building relationships should come before trying to change everything. 🎧Spotify – YouTube – Apple High Performance Leaders Whether you're developing leaders, recognising your people or building a stronger team, we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Leadership Recognition Stories 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/
When someone hands in their resignation, things can get weird pretty quickly. An employee who was once highly valued can suddenly become “not that good anyway”. A workplace someone once loved can suddenly be remembered as toxic. Why do we do this? In this episode, we look at what happens psychologically when a working relationship comes to an end, from both the employee and employer perspective. We look at why resignations often start months before the resignation letter, why people can feel the need to justify their decision, why we sometimes need a villain and why employers can fall into the same trap when good people leave. Most importantly, we explore a different way to look at departures. Sometimes nobody is wrong. Sometimes an employee and an organisation, simply aren't the right fit anymore. And that doesn't mean the relationship was a failure, it might just mean that a good chapter has come to an end. 🎧Spotify – YouTube – Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast High Performance Leaders Whether you're developing leaders, recognising your people or building a stronger team, we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Leadership Recognition Stories 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/

He discusses balancing multiple crews, customers and business performance while raising a young family. Hemi also talks about earning the respect of former workmates after stepping into management, the importance of strong support networks and staying organised. Outside of work, boxing has become an important outlet, helping him manage stress, improve his health and stay disciplined as he prepares for his second fight. 🎧Spotify – YouTube – Apple Sarros Electrical https://www.sarros.com.au/ High Performance Leaders Whether you're developing leaders, recognising your people or building a stronger team, we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Leadership Recognition Stories 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/
Jesse Turner is the captain of Swan Districts Football Club, a five-time consecutive WA State representative and a secondary school teacher. Jesse reflects on his football journey from Bassendean Junior Football Club through the Swan Districts development pathway, sharing the setbacks that shaped his career. He opens up about being overlooked, cut from Colts, missing a Colts Grand Final after playing 18 consecutive games and the challenges of competing while unknowingly dealing with anaemia. Rather than walking away, Jesse committed to becoming the hardest worker on the track. That mindset earned him selection in the reserves, a league debut in his first senior year and ultimately established him as one of the WAFL's most consistent midfielders and leaders. Jesse also discusses the influence of coaches throughout his career, including the impact Andrew "Pruey" Pruyn had by believing in him when others didn't. He shares what it takes to balance the demands of semi-professional football with teaching, the sacrifices required to perform at an elite level, his teaching focus on relationships and positive reinforcement and the motivation he draws from his single mum and younger brother. 🎧Spotify – YouTube – Apple High Performance Leaders Whether you're developing leaders, recognising your people or building a stronger team, we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Leadership Recognition Stories 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/

Daniel welcomes back Travis from SPARQ Fitness to break down the benefits of kids playing team sports and why they matter far beyond physical fitness. The episode explores how sport helps build confidence, resilience and life skills that flow into work, relationships and everyday life. They contrast today’s screen heavy, sedentary lifestyle with the value of being outdoors, staying active and learning through competition, setbacks and challenges. Daniel and Travis discuss the key lessons sport teaches in a controlled environment including discipline, consistency, accountability, emotional regulation, teamwork, leadership, handling pressure and working with people you may not always get along with. They also touch on the importance of community, belonging and cross cultural friendships, while challenging the growing focus on winning and participation trophies over development, effort, attitude and long term growth. 🎧Spotify – YouTube – Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast SPARQ Fitness https://sparqfitness.com.au/ High Performance Leaders Whether you're building a stronger team, developing leaders, or navigating a critical period — we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Development for Leaders at All Levels If you're ready to lift performance, culture, and accountability. 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/

At nearly 44 years old, I’m preparing for my 33rd season of Rugby League. Not in a master’s or social comp, but in a full-contact, open-age first grade competition against players in their teens, 20s and 30s. This episode breaks down the reality of continuing to compete at that level. Not just physically, but mentally and logistically, while balancing family, business and life. There’s a bit on the training preparation required and recovery, but more importantly this is about challenging the stigma around playing sport in your 30s and 40s and asking a simple question…why stop if you’re still able? I dive into the benefits of team sport beyond fitness, accountability, discipline, connection and being part of something bigger than yourself. It also touches on mental health, purpose, leadership and the importance of role modelling for your kids. Showing through actions, not words, that you’re never too old to keep competing, improving and getting after it. 🎧Spotify – YouTube - Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast High Performance Leaders Whether you're building a stronger team, developing leaders, or navigating a critical period — we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Development for Leaders at All Levels If you're ready to lift performance, culture, andaccountability. 👉Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/
Ed is a Youth Worker who spent a decade in rugby league development and coaching before shifting to working with disadvantaged youth. He describes working with highly traumatised young people in residential care and youth homelessness engagement hub environments. The realities of violence and critical incidents and why he values “walking alongside” clients rather than chasing quick wins. The conversation focuses on trauma-informed practice, especially Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, including how workers respond to escalation, build rapport and use post-incident “life space interviews” to create change. He also outlines his in-house Alcohol and Other Drugs support pilot within a low-threshold service model, arguing that flexible access, reduced barriers, and harm-reduction approaches improve engagement compared to rigid referral systems. 🎧Spotify – YouTube - Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast High Performance Leaders Whether you're building a stronger team, developing leaders, or navigating a critical period — we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Development for Leaders at All Levels If you're ready to lift performance, culture, and accountability. 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/
Ret reflects on a turbulent 12 months that saw him living in Bali, surviving a serious scooter accident, navigating co-parenting his young daughter and facing the collapse of his fitness business, S30. S30 grew to 27 locations across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore before entering administration and liquidation, a rise and fall that delivered hard-earned lessons in leadership, ownership and resilience. With 15 years in the fitness industry, Ret shares his journey from New Zealand to personal training in Melbourne, then building franchises in Perth through F45. He details the critical role that community, culture and well-designed systems played in that time. Ret is now building Daawg Haus, an online platform grounded in structured training, strong personal standards and brotherhood. Its mission is simple: help men lead themselves better, so they can lead their families, careers and lives with strength, presence and integrity. 🎧Spotify – YouTube - Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast Daawg Haus https://www.instagram.com/daawg.haus/ Ret Hartley https://www.instagram.com/ret_hartley/ High Performance Leaders Whether you're building a stronger team, developing leaders, or navigating a critical period — we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Development for Leaders at All Levels If you're ready to lift performance, culture, andaccountability. 👉 Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/
Kieran grew up the 10th of 12 kids in a rough and resource scarce environment where humour, solitude and strong sibling bonds became survival tools. That foundation shaped the man who went on to serve 14 years in the Australian Army, deploying five times as a combat engineer and draftsman before being unfairly dismissed amid the Defence email culture controversy. He shares how the reputational fallout damaged relationships and pushed him toward suicide, and how he rebuilt himself through Stoic philosophy, meditation and disciplined daily habits. We discuss trauma and mental health through a neuroscience lens, challenging why “just talk about it” does not work for everyone, particularly hyper masculine cohorts. Kieran unpacks how many mental health frameworks cherry pick psychology while overlooking biology and social context. Today, he researches institutional abuse at Flinders University, using qualitative interviews to identify themes such as betrayal and leadership abuse to help inform policy change. 🎧Spotify – YouTube - Apple https://www.highpl.com.au/podcast Kieran Toohey https://www.linkedin.com/in/ktoohey/ High Performance Leaders Whether you're building a stronger team, developing leaders, or navigating a critical period — we’ve got you covered. - 1:1 Leadership Coaching - Team Workshops & Custom Training - Operational Leadership Support - Development for Leaders at All Levels If you're ready to lift performance, culture, andaccountability. 👉Contact Daniel: https://www.highpl.com.au/ 24 Hour Leadership Challenge 7 - 8 March 2026 Perth, Western Australia More info HERE
