The discovery that the Earth orbits the sun had significance outside of science. It also created a transition from the Christian spiritual order back to the old worship of pagan deities and astrology, which simultaneously produced the justification for the absolute power of the state. The whole crux of scientific thinking is to view the world as a machine. But is this really justified or just part of our Western imaginative framework? What are the alternatives, and how do we even think about the world otherwise? No way of viewing the world is "neutral," and the scientific worldview is no exception. Our idea of "science" comes out of our distinctly Faustian view of the world, one that is both deeply religious and has one ultimate goal in mind: world domination. Since the Scientific Revolution, we've been telling ourselves a very specific narrative about our own history, one that's so biased even secular scholars now refer to it as the "myth of progress." But myth or not, it still rules our imaginations. Folk stories used to be local, human, and participatory, but in our time stories have become corporatized and dis-incarnated. Are tabletop games, and role-playing games in particular, a way we return to local stories that we both tell and inhabit? Why did Tolkien hate allegory but fill his stories with mythic imagery? Because there's a difference between disguising your point as an author and telling a story grounded in eternal themes. This is the reason that the most beloved children's books are so resonant! In consumer culture we think of stories as entertainment and aesthetics as decoration, but that is not how ancient people thought. Stories for them were religious, and beauty was the image of truth. We see this most profoundly in Orthodoxy's relationship to aesthetics. In every culture and every age, people tell stories. It's a universal human practice because reality itself is a story. Because stories are worldviews, they are more religious than anything else. How you read the story, therefore, makes all the difference. Does Orthodoxy belong to the Classical "world-feeling" or to the Western? Neither! Orthodoxy inspired a new culture that rose out of the ashes of Classical antiquity and which also gave birth to its rivals: Islam, Judaism, Nestorianism, and the other early heresies. According to Spengler, our Western culture did not begin with the Greeks and Romans but was born around the year 1000 with a completely new take on everything from math to art to religion, all in pursuit of the same thing: infinite, unbridled will-to-power. In trying to understand what the West really is, it's helpful to contrast the things that we as a culture find intuitive with a culture that would NOT have found them intuitive at all: the Greeks and Romans, whose cultures were basically the exact opposite of ours. Is the West dying? Can we save it? What should Christians do? To answer these questions, we need to take a big step back and answer not just the question "What is the West?" but "What is culture itself?" To do that we turn to Oswald Spengler and his theory of history. Curtis Yarvin says the Left always claims to be the victim, but still always beats the right, because the Left-Right dichotomy—along with Democracy—is a construct. Dr. Zac puts this view into an Orthodox framework and assesses Yarvin's solutions. Why is there a budding nostalgia movement interested in bringing fascism back? Dr. Zac explains the appeal of this movement, why it's built on the failures of liberalism, and how it nevertheless doesn't offer a Christian alternative. People say that Marxism starts as a critique of capitalism and then evolves into an economic system. The reality? It starts as liberalism and turns into a societal method for weaponizing resentment. To understand the political landscape of the 21st century, we need to understand the way neoliberalism controls all definitions about all politics and the way we as a culture interpret the World Wars mythologically in order to justify both Left and Right politics. It's difficult to define the Right because, historically speaking, the Left and Right are fraternal twins with the same definition of the human being—a secular, Enlightenment definition that ultimately isn't compatible with a traditional Christian one. While the liberal democracies and socialism were at odds politically throughout the 20th century, they've started to merge because they share a core belief about the human being: egalitarianism—which turns out to be yet another secularization of an ancient Christian idea. To understand the left politically, we need to look at the history of how secular ideologies emerged in Enlightenment Europe and realize that we're not just talking about politics but about a view of humanity and morality—one that's deeply indebted to historic Christianity. Modern political ideologies are pseudo-religions that want to replace and subvert all your other religious beliefs. Left or right, they are all based on a radically new political idea that no previous religious cultures had entertained: secularism.
