The LOGSTAT is the Army’s official premier podcast on all things sustainment. We analyze new developments, discuss current trends, and forge the path ahead for the next generation of sustainment Soldiers. This is an original weekly podcast that broadcasts from CASCOM on Fort Lee, Virginia. Our goal is to support and educate the sustainment enterprise all over the globe. The episodes are short and packaged for quick consumption. In each episode, the Sustainment Harding Fellow talks with sustainment leaders on a variety of topics in the sustainment enterprise. These conversations are designed to spark discussions across the enterprise and to sharpen our skills and knowledge as sustainers. Episode #62: Base clusters are a developing concept that every unit is testing out to see which organizational style works the most efficient for them. The driving force is that base clusters increase our mobility, are lighter, and maximize our survivability through dispersion compared to the base formations of the past. A large focus for this concept has been on light formations, but armored brigade combat teams (ABCT) are testing them out now as well. Episode #61: Sustainment in the U.S. Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) has its own unique challenges and opportunities which begins with the group support battalion (GSB). Throughout this episode CPT Garett Pyle discusses how sustainment in SOF compares to the regular Army with LTC James Broadie, Commander of the 10th GSB and CPT Heidy Shi, Deputy SPO of the 10th GSB. They analyze the role the GSB plays, how they are adapting to meet the challenges of large scale combat operations, and talent management for those interested in joining SOF. Episode #60: The Sustainment Enterprise is forging a new beginning in the world of data expertise and institutionalizing this skillset through the establishment of a new skill identifier (SI). This innovative SI, which is the Sustainment Functional Data Analyst (L9), is not only a career enhancer but is also a combat multiplier for individuals in any unit to leverage data as a strategic asset. Episode #57: Healthy nutrition is the foundation for a Soldier to reach their peak performance. What we put into our bodies will determine the output we are able to achieve. Thus, over the years the Army has sought to provide the force with the most nutritious meals while ensuring Soldiers can choose the meals that taste the best to them. To achieve this, the Go for Green initiative provides a color-coding system for Soldiers to decide which foods to consume in the dining facilities. On this episode, CPT Garett Pyle meets with MAJ Christin Jessen and Denise Laursen to provide a better understanding to how Soldiers should fuel their bodies and the importance of nutrition. Episode #56: Making the transition from company grade to field grade for an officer begins with their next chapter of education. The core of this Intermediate Level Education (ILE) for Army majors is located at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC). For future students heading off to the course, CPT Garett Pyle meets with MAJ Steven Shak, a recent CGSC student, to discuss what sustainment students should expect at resident CGSC and how they can prepare to be successful while at ILE. Episode #55: Transformation in Contact (TiC) has revolutionized the modern battlefield as units have integrated a wild variety of new technology into their formations. As we move from TiC 1.0 to TiC 2.0, we continue to see an assortment of structural changes to units and how they adapt to the modern battlefield. This opportunity to experiment and innovate is increasing our lethality at a record rate with each unit providing its own lessons learned to share with the community. Thus, on this episode, CPT Garett Pyle meets with MAJ Patrick Smith, the 703d Brigade Support Battalion (BSB) executive officer, to discuss how an armored brigade combat team (ABCT) BSB has integrated lessons learned from other TiC units and applied them to ABCT sustainment operations. Episode #54: “Contested Logistics” is a recent buzz word that has been thrown around with the definition being contested over the years. FM 4-0, Sustainment Operations published in March 2026, included an entire section on the concept; it outlines what “contested logistics” is and how it impacts operations. However, even before this updated FM was published, leaders across the Army were discussing this and working to truly define the term. One such leader was LTC Jon Michael King, who wrote an article on contested logistics back in February 2024. Thus, to deep dive into contested logistics, CPT Garett Pyle sits down with LTC King as they analyze contested logistics through a variety of different lenses. Through their conversation, we see why professional dialogue is vital to increase our understanding of different concepts and our lethality as warfighters. Episode #53: Maximizing our survivability through dispersion with the use of base clusters provides multiple benefits to the force. It increases our mobility, facilitates greater concealment, helps mitigate indirect fire, and may enable greater flexibility to position assets forward to extend operational reach. This concept is not restricted to solely sustainment units as they can be applied to a wide range of units such as aviation which is looking to restructure their footprint based on the sustainment model. Episode #52: Turning in property can be a nightmare with just a few pieces alone. Now add the complexities of a unit deactivating and the entire process can seem overwhelming. However, it doesn’t have to be. The Army has programs to make the turn-in process efficient. If your unit is tasked with a deactivation, you can not only survive but thrive. On this episode, CPT Garett Pyle meets with a unit that has accomplished just that. CPT Doug Smith serves as the S-4 OIC and SSG Andrew Arrison serves as the S-4 NCOIC of the 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne). They discuss how they survived their unit deactivation and provide guidance on how other units can be successful in any type of equipment turn-in. Episode #50: On the 50th episode of The LOGSTAT, CPT Garett Pyle closes out the HQDA G-4 miniseries with COL Brandon Grooms, the Strategic Mobility Division Chief in the G-43/5/7 Directorate, and CW5 Mike Love, the Senior Army Watercraft Advisor in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff G-4, to discuss a new era of global sustainment. There are a magnitude of topics we could discuss under this umbrella of global sustainment, each providing its own insight. Episode #48: Our first VIDEO podcast! Check out the links below. Property accountability can give anyone nightmares. The time it takes to conduct an inventory seems to be never-ending. Thus, we have continuously told ourselves, “there must be another way?” Well, gone are the days of the physical property book; Soldiers can now leverage mobile capabilities to track the condition and quantity of their equipment at a moment’s notice. And that is just one aspect of the new property accountability system called ParaLine that units will see arrive here in 2026. Episode #47: Our next miniseries focuses on a variety of innovations and developments within the Army Sustainment Enterprise from the Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA) G-4 office. Through the miniseries we will see how the G-4 is aligned with CSA’s Focus Area of Continuous Transformation by providing operational efficiency to the warfighter. Episode #46: The amount of data that we are surrounded by increases not only by the day but by the minute in our technology driven world. To adopt a data culture, CPT Garett Pyle meets with CPT Chris Sherrill, a Senior Instructor at the US Army Finance and Comptroller School, on how data should be a command responsibility and an inspectable item. Once we adjust our mindset on how we see and manage data, we can increase our lethality across all our operations.
Episode #45: To close out our Combat Training Center (CTC) miniseries, CPT Garett Pyle travels across to the other side of the United States into the Pacific Theater to meet with LTC Keith Twichell who serves as the Commander of the 4th Battalion, 196th Infantry Brigade and Task Force Cobra, Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center (JPMRC) at Fort Shafter, HI. It is the U.S. Army Pacific’s premier training and readiness capability for Army, Joint, and Multinational forces in the Indo-Pacific theater. Their purpose is to support the Theater Army Campaign plan by building readiness, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing partner capacity and interoperability to prevail in crisis and conflict when called upon. Episode #44: On the next part of our Combat Training Center (CTC) miniseries, CPT Garett Pyle travels across the Atlantic Ocean to meet with LTC Andrew Horn, the Senior Sustainment Trainer, to focus on the Army’s only forward stationed CTC, the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) near Hohenfels, Germany. It is a Europe-based CTC that hosts a variety of annual training exercises with our European Allies and partners to train Brigade Combat Teams and Divisions in a theater-informed multi-domain battlefield by providing Joint and Combined Arms Exercises in the EUCOM AOR to increase the scale, capability, readiness, and interoperability of the United States, Allies, and partners.
