“Addictive personality” or ADHD...? I’m starting to think addiction has a lot in common with the hyperfixation that comes with ADHD. Today, we’re diving into how this can show up in everyday life beyond alcohol, from relationships and hobbies to food and more. I made a video that sparked a LOT of debate, so naturally, we’re taking the conversation to the podcast. I believe there’s a difference between choosing not to drink, and being sober -and that not everyone who abstains from alcohol is also sober/ in recovery. In this episode, we’re unpacking the difference between being a non-drinker and being someone who had to quit drinking because alcohol became a problem, why the distinction matters, and why the word “sober” can mean something very different depending on your relationship with alcohol. You might notice that I rarely use the words “alcoholic” or “addict” in my episodes -and there’s a reason for that. In this episode, I’m sharing why I personally don’t identify with these labels, what they mean to me, and why I believe you can be sober without seeing yourself as diseased, sick, or powerless over alcohol. And to be clear: if these words resonate with you, that’s great! This isn’t about telling you what you should or shouldn’t call yourself. It’s about knowing that you have a choice. I used to blame my ailments on ANYTHING other than drinking: Throwing up? -must be food poisoning. Loosing control of my bowels? Must be a gut health issue like IBS. Alcohol was my savior, so it couldn't possibly be causing me all this harm, right? WRONG. Little did I know, alcohol was at the root of all of these issues & more. And sobriety is what revealed that to me.
