Late on 8 January 2004, a woman calling herself Hasumi began posting to the Japanese message board 2channel after her usual train travelled far beyond its normal route and stopped at a deserted station she had never heard of. Over the next four hours, strangers online followed her journey through tunnels, distant drums, a terrifying encounter and finally a ride with a mysterious man, until Hasumi posted one final message and disappeared from the thread. In 1986, blood began to rise from the floor of a family photography shop in La Plata, Argentina, drawing police, priests, believers and frightened neighbours to a house suddenly treated as both crime scene and shrine. Before the 1890 Morfa Colliery disaster, miners claimed they heard strange sounds in the four-foot seam, including doors opening and slamming in the darkness, and some believed the pit was warning them of fire or explosion.
