Mark Martin, born in Batesville, AK and a NASCAR Hall of Famer. Mark's talent and endless work ethic skyrocketed his racing career, that began in 1974, and in only seven years led to a five race NASCAR CUP Series schedule in 1981. Through that time, Mark had incredible success in ASA and at the short track level, collecting wins at some of the most prestigious races and winning championships against who he calls the "gods" of racing. We discuss the highs and lows of Mark's first journey to the CUP Series, how he reestablished himself in short track racing and an eventual return to NASCAR. In this episode, we take a deep dive into going fast, faith in God, and farming. Nick VanStrydonk grew up the son of a powersports dealer. At his earliest years he could be found riding a dirtbike and racing kitty kat snowmobiles. The path of racing snowmobiles brought him through the ranks with much success along the way. Building a close-knit race team with drive and innovation led them to many wins at the Pro Champ 440 level and two World Championship titles at the Eagle River Derby track. Being involved in any form of racing involves an immense amount of time if you want to succeed. Cardell Potter's journey into racing started at an early age on a kitty kat snowmobile. Kitty kat racing led to years of moving through the ranks of ice oval snowmobile racing. After reaching pro champ 440, the highest rank in ice oval snowmobile racing, continued work to optimize his training and race team performance led Cardell and his team to winning the most prestigious race, the Eagle River World Championship Derby and many other achievements. Even with the year round work that it takes to succeed, Cardell and his family also dove into asphalt stock car racing where they competed at the super late model level at some of the most prestigious race events and series. Racing was truly a family affair for Cardell and his family with their endeavors year round in both snowmobile and stock car racing.
Alex Gilhart grew up spectating many races with his family at a very early age. At the age of 4 he got the opportunity to wave a flag in the flag stand one night at the former State Park Speedway. You could say that moment was the start of it all for Alex. Greg McKarns gave him his first real flagging opportunity at Madison International Speedway. Once he got started it didn't take long for Alex to fill his calendar and start working with more tracks and with other series that would total up to around 60 events a year. Flagging hasn't been his only role; Alex has been performed race director duties and also served as General Manager at Angell Park Speedway. At the end of 2025, Alex was names Series Director for the ASA Midwest Tour starting in the 2026 race season. Tune into Speed and Grease on YouTube and your favorite Podcast Platforms! Luke Parmeter, an award winning filmmaker and content strategist, grew up hill climbing dirt bikes like others in his family. Losing a national title by .05 of a second weighed on his mind even after putting the dirt bikes aside in his teenage years. Through days of skateboarding with his friends, a passion for filmmaking and content creation grew. While attending UW-Stout for Multimedia, the desire to earn a national hill climbing title returned. The willingness to out work and out train others led Luke back to the podium and the accomplishment of capturing the national title he set out for. His payment for training at The Sandbox indoor riding arena was his filmmaking and content creation. That content creation and the growth of his website, LP Motocross, led to a phone call that gave him the opportunity to work for Arenacross and Supercross. As Luke looked to lessen his travel, he launched Luke Parmeter Productions. Luke still gets to work with Supercross, but has now been able to transform his motorsports mindset into a variety of different industries and companies such as Hardscape Mentor and Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes. Bryan Reffner, son of racing legend Tom Reffner, was born and raised in Rudolph, Wisconsin. Growing up around racing, he was first a gear head before he ever had interest in racing himself. Originally, he only started racing because his older brother, Baird Reffner bought a hobby stock. Having fun in a hobby stock turned into wanting to race a Super Late Model after a trip to Madison International Speedway (MIS) sparked a deeper desire to continue racing and one day make it to MIS. A few years into Super Late Model racing and after winning ARTGO ROY, Bryan's career looked to be nearing an end until he won the 1984 Oktoberfest at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. That win led to building a new Bac Kar Chassis in the offseason. The innovation of Bac Kar Chassis and the time spent working with Jim, Les, and the entire Back family played a large role in not only Bryan's Super Late Model success but carried that with him through ASA and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Beyond Super Late Models, Bryan captured the 1995 ASA Championship, 1996 Craftsman Truck Series ROY, and Truck Series Win at Texas Motor Speedway. After NASCAR, racing led him back to ASA and also a return to Super Late Model racing where he ended his storied career in another Bac Kar Chassis. Bryan and his father, Tom, built their own chassis from the ground up in 2012-2013, that his nephew Colin Reffner raced for over the next decade. Part 2 of 2 for Episode 015 with Mark Mackesy! Being brought to the race track at just 4 days old to his dad's race, was just the beginning of life at the races for Mark Mackesy. When a work injury put his dad's racing on hold, it gave Mark the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Super Late Model. Eventually then splitting time with his dad in his car, he then stepped out into his own. Growing up racing around and spending time with his racing mentors like Tom Reffner, Jimmy Back, and Dick Trickle, gave him a front seat view of how those men raced and taught him how to race. Mark has accumulated many wins, a CWRA championship, and acquired the nickname of "The King of State Park Speedway". Through all of the wins and great times racing, "sometimes the spectacle was which bar are we going to after". Please support us by following the show and giving us a rating and/or a review! Gregg McKarns, along with his wife Angie are the owners of Wisconsin's Fastest 1/2 Mile race track, or as they call it, "The Family Farm". It is the place where they are working the land to make a living. Gregg, the son of legendary race promoter, John McKarns, was born into racing and took a love for it right from the beginning. As a young kid, even living a summer in a pop-up camper behind the race track didn't deter his passion. Being a race promoter and a race track owner isn't an easy path. Through a continuation of adapting new ideas and creativity, Gregg and his family have continued to provide venues for racers and fans to enjoy short track racing. With a standard of living by the golden rule, a trait past down from John McKarns, Gregg continues to teach and share that same principle to ensure racing is in good hands, for decades to come.
