On 8 December 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed outside his home at the Dakota in New York City by Mark David Chapman, a fan who had previously approached him for an autograph. Chapman’s fixation on The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger became a central part of the case, as he later described identifying with the novel’s protagonist and attached personal significance to the book, though its role in his motive remains complex. Sammy sits down with psychologist Kelly Morrish for an important conversation about domestic violence, coercive control and the psychology behind our fascination with true crime. They unpack the insidious ways abuse can manifest beyond physical violence, how coercive control can strip away a person's independence, and why we're so captivated by stories of real-life crime, tragedy and human behaviour. It's a confronting but essential conversation about power, manipulation, victim-survivors and our desire to understand the darkest parts of human nature. In 1983, 19-year-old Barbara Grams was raped and murdered in Tampa, Florida, and 18-year-old Robert DuBoise was convicted of the crime in 1985 based largely on discredited bite-mark analysis and testimony from a jailhouse informant who received a reduced sentence. DuBoise was sentenced to death, later resentenced to life in prison, and spent 37 years behind bars before DNA evidence excluded him and identified another perpetrator. The story starts at 10:33. They thought they were publishing poetry by a mysterious male writer…but they were actually publishing a furious joke written by Gwen Harwood. In 1961, Harwood fooled The Bulletin into printing two poems containing a hidden message aimed directly at its editors, exposing the sexism of Australia's literary establishment in spectacular fashion. But the hoax was only the beginning of the extraordinary life of the woman behind the masks; Gwen Harwood. Story starts at 9:26. In January 2022, Boston police officer John O’Keefe was found dying in the snow outside the home of fellow officer Brian Albert, and his girlfriend, Karen Read, was accused of hitting him with her SUV and leaving him to die. What followed was a sensational murder case involving disputed forensic evidence, a suspicious Google search, allegations of a police cover-up and explosive messages from the lead investigator, Michael Proctor. After two trials, Karen was acquitted of murder and manslaughter in June 2025, but convicted of operating under the influence, leaving one haunting question unanswered: what really happened to John O’Keefe? The story starts at 9.00. Note: in the original episode uploaded I mistakenly said 2002 instead of 2022. What a dimwit! Pedro Rodrigues Filho was a Brazilian serial killer who claimed to have killed more than 100 people; and became known as “Pedrinho Matador,” or “Little Pedro the Killer.” But what makes his story so bizarre is that he said many of his victims were criminals themselves, including people he claimed deserved to die. He was eventually convicted of numerous murders, spent decades in prison, and later reinvented himself online as a celebrity figure; earning comparisons to a real-life Dexter. Former American Idol contestant and worship pastor Caleb Flynn is on trial in Ohio, accused of killing his wife Ashley. Sammy breaks down the evidence so far. At 2:30am on February 16, 2026, Caleb Flynn called 911 and said an intruder had shot his wife. Prosecutors say that intruder never existed. In this bonus episode, Sammy walks through the secret affair, more than 107,000 messages, the AI-generated love songs played to the jury, the questionable break-in and the gun that has never been found. And no, this isn't the pastor case from the recent Netflix documentary. Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty. This is an ongoing trial and everything discussed is alleged until a verdict is reached. Edmund Kemper, known as the “Co-ed Killer,” murdered his grandparents as a teenager before later killing six young women in California, followed by his mother and her friend in 1973. After killing his mother, Kemper confessed to the murders over the phone to police and was arrested, eventually receiving multiple life sentences after a trial in which psychiatrists debated his sanity and responsibility. His case became one of America’s most studied serial-killer stories, particularly because of his intelligence, his manipulation of psychiatric authorities, and the disturbing contrast between his apparently calm demeanour and his crimes.
