There's a village in Hampshire known as the ghost village: a church, a pond, and a hollow where a manor house stood until its owner had it torn down. Locals say a phantom carriage still races up the old drive, the church sings when nobody is inside, and the lady of the house still passes the churchyard wall. For this Halloween episode of Portal Investigates, Den and Luke go back over their night at Hartley Mauditt. They test each legend, and talk through a noise in the graveyard that stopped Den in his tracks, a reading Luke couldn't find a source for, and a session by the pond, before weighing up natural causes and giving their verdicts. The full investigation is on our YouTube channel. Hartley Mauditt is a deserted medieval village in East Hampshire, recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Its houses were lost over the centuries, and the manor house was demolished in 1798, with accounts still differing on who gave the order and why. In our Portal Investigates series, Den and Luke head out to investigate the unexplained firsthand, visiting haunted locations and the sites behind local legends. They share their findings honestly—what holds up, what doesn't, and what they simply can't explain—for a grounded take on the paranormal. A hidden place in the woods. A figure that sent one person running. And two drawings that should never have matched. This week, a listener named Tom shares an experience that's stayed with him since he was sixteen. Deep in the woods outside his Cotswolds town, he and his friends kept a spot no one else knew about — until a newcomer to the group fled from it screaming, with no explanation. When Tom later admitted he thought he'd seen something there too, the two sat at opposite ends of a table and drew what they'd witnessed. What they turned over matched — right down to a detail neither of them had ever said out loud. In our Beyond the Veil series, Den and Luke share the real, first-hand accounts sent in by our listeners—the encounters, sightings and unexplained moments they've carried with them, told in their own words. Honest, personal and often deeply unsettling, these are the stories you've trusted us to tell. When archivist Daniel Mercer prises open a box buried beneath a storm-felled tree in Vermont's Bennington Triangle, he expects old paper and rust. What he finds is a ranger's field log, a compass, and a photograph of three real missing people standing together — decades apart. On the back, four words in a shaking hand: Don't look behind him. The deeper Mercer reads into the ranger's journal, the more its entries begin to fracture — and the more he realises he isn't investigating a disappearance. He's being pulled into one. In our Tales from the Shadows series, we take real unsolved mysteries — true disappearances, hauntings and unexplained events — and reimagine them as fiction. Drawing on the facts of each case before letting the story take its own dark turn, we blur the line between what's documented and what we've imagined, offering chilling, immersive storytelling rooted in events that really happened. This episode kicks off our Halloween special month — and we're opening on the Bennington Triangle, a stretch of Vermont wilderness where, between 1945 and 1950, a string of people vanished without a trace or explanation. Tonight's story is fiction; the disappearances that inspired it were not. A man claims he travelled to the year 4413 and came back with a warning about humanity's future. It was meant to be an unremarkable evening’s fishing on the banks of the Pascagoula River. Then Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker heard a strange buzzing in the dark — and turned to see a glowing, egg-shaped craft hovering over the water beside them. Three grey creatures with wrinkled skin and crab-like claws drifted out, lifted the two men off their feet, and carried them aboard. Twenty minutes later they were back on the riverbank, shaken and struggling to explain what had happened. They came home with a story almost too strange to believe — and evidence that made it hard not to. In this episode of Portal Files, Den and Luke investigate the Pascagoula Abduction — one of the most credible and genuinely unsettling encounters ever recorded. They examine the original testimony of Hickson and Parker, the secret police recording that only deepened the mystery, Dr J. Allen Hynek’s investigation, and the polygraph results, alongside the sceptical explanations ranging from hoax to misidentification. Was this a real close encounter, a shared delusion, or something that still resists every explanation? In our Portal Files series, Den and Luke delve into the vast spectrum of the unexplained—from chilling UFO encounters and elusive cryptids to perplexing mysteries and haunting paranormal cases.
